Scout Report – Tammy Abraham

Back on Tuesday, Swansea City confirmed the signing of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on a season-long loan deal.

The England U21 international, who was also linked with moves to newly promoted sides Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion, believes Swansea’s style of play will enable him to build on his impressive loan spell for Championship outfit Bristol City:

“I enjoyed my time at Bristol City last season, playing regular first-team football and scoring goals. Hopefully, I can do the same at Swansea… I know it was a difficult season for them at times, but you could see that they always try and play nice football. That was a major factor in me joining Swansea. When teams play good football, it tends to create chances for the striker. Then it’s up to me to get myself in good positions and hopefully score some goals.”

The History

Abraham joined Chelsea at the age of seven and progressed all the way through the club’s academy system.

He was part of the side that won back-to-back UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup titles in 2015 and 2016 and was handed his Premier League debut by Guus Hiddink against Liverpool in May 2016, featuring as a late substitute.

The young striker appeared off the bench the following week against Leicester City before the Blues decided to send him out on a season-long loan to Championship side Bristol City for the 2016/17 campaign.

Abraham enjoyed a hugely successful season in the second tier, registering 23 goals and four assists in 41 league appearances in a team that could only finish 17th in the Championship.

Capped by England at U18 and U19 levels, managing seven goals in 19 matches, Abraham progressed to the U21s over the past year, and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European U21 Championship.

He scored his third goal for the U21s in the 2-2 draw semi-final against Germany, although he did miss in the penalty shootout.

The Prospects

While Fernando Llorente and Jordan Ayew struck up a strong partnership during the run-in last season, the failure of club-record signing Borja Baston made the need for Paul Clement to bolster his striking options pretty obvious.

Borja has since completed a season-long loan move to Malaga.

Abraham, who will link up with his new team-mates during the pre-season tour of America, will therefore compete with Llorente, Ayew and Oliver McBurnie for a starting berth.

For the final five matches of last season, Clement decided to play with two forwards in front of a midfield diamond, with Ayew’s pace, work rate and ability to drift to either flank perfectly suited alongside target man Llorente.

Providing the Spaniard is fully fit for the opening day trip to Southampton, after fracturing a bone in his lower arm in a cycling accident, he looks certain to occupy one of the two forward spots, with Abraham then likely to compete with Ayew for the other position.

Speaking about the forward options Clement now has available to him, the Swansea head coach revealed how they could be used in a number of different roles and systems:

“We have Tammy, Fernando Llorente, Jordan Ayew and Oli McBurnie. They are our four out-and-out strikers. I see all those players as being able to play down the middle on their own, or they can be paired up and in some cases play one behind another one.”

Like Ayew, Abraham boasts plenty of pace, is capable of getting in behind defences, and also has the ability to drift into the channels, although perhaps not quite as willingly as the Ghanaian.

It’s in the penalty area though, as Clement himself mentioned, where Abraham comes alive and looks to have the edge.

As Adi Viveash, one of the 19-year-old’s youth coaches at Chelsea stated, Abraham has shown his ability to time his runs into the box perfectly and has the composure and predatory instincts to find the back of the net on a regular basis.

But as this report suggests, Abraham also has similar traits to Ayew in terms of his willingness to track back and do his defensive work, which is important given Llorente’s limited mobility.

Abraham is also a good passer, and while his wiry frame means he needs to continue bulking up, his hold up does appear to be improving, with former England striker Alan Smith praising that part of his game during this summer’s tournament.

Looking at Abraham’s underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 30.86 minutes, bettering both Llorente (47.19) and Ayew (72.08).

Although he played in the second tier of English football, he did feature in a side that struggled in the Championship, with Llorente and Ayew, following his arrival in the January transfer window, part of a similar situation at Swansea.

What the numbers do suggest – certainly in comparison to Ayew – is that Abraham should offer a greater goal threat, despite the fact he’ll have to prove himself at a higher level.

That could mean that he is handed a higher price tag than the Ghana international, with Abraham perhaps in line to set us back 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Swansea’s schedule over the opening six Gameweeks (sot, MUN, cpl, NEW, tot, WAT) is fairly mixed, although a run of kind home fixtures through September, October and November means that their Fantasy assets might just be slow burners.

The challenge for Abraham initially will be to impress during pre-season, with Clement likely to favour Llorente and Ayew from the off following their end of season form.

But should Abraham impose himself early on, there’s every chance he could push for a starting berth, and become a viable budget forward option.

That’s on the proviso that Clement continues to play with two forwards though, with a switch back to the 4-3-3 system he favoured during the start of his reign at the Liberty Stadium likely to limit Abraham’s prospects.

There’s also another factor – ironically Chelsea’s reported interest in Llorente.

Having been courted as back-up to Diego Costa last season, reports now indicate that the Blues are stepping up their pursuit of Llorente once again. However, in the light of the announcement of Manchester United’s accepted bid for Romelu Lukaku, it remains to be seen if there is any real substance to those claims. Antonio Conte will surely be assessing other targets to bolster the Chelsea frontline.

A departure for Llorente would be a game changer for Abraham’s prospects. Although, again, it would likely result in Clement going back into the market.

Abraham is certainly highly thought of at his parent club, having just signed a new five-year contract with the champions, so he’ll be expected to continue his development in South Wales. It remains to be seen how much pitch time he will enjoy and, when it arrives, whether he can snap up the opportunities that come his way.

The young striker should have the confidence to kick on in a side that will supply ample service into the box. If he can command a regular starting role, his goalscoring record and potential price tag suggest that he could be a factor in our seasons. But, as it stands, he will have to fight to earn the position.

Anyone know if in the FPL Draft game, you can make unlimited transfers of free agents?

Yeah I've read the post from the Scout on the FPL site a bunch of times. It's not explicit either way whether you can transfer free agents from the pool an unlimited amount of times every week. Got a nice article idea if it is unlimited

You'll have a pretty rubbish side if you are making lots of transfers and it's not a DGW.

I'm only advocating doing it in defence. There's going to be a ton of defenders undrafted who offer clean sheet potential on individual weeks when they have good fixtures

Seems fair, the strategies for one against the other are going to make no sense. In the draft format people are gonna be talking about Burnley's 2nd best midfielder and Swansea's 2nd striker that you wouldn't dream of transferring in the normal game

You can but free agent transfers can only be made after the waivers are all complete. Therefore free agents are likely to be the most unwanted assets.

Ah perfect. Free agent goalies, mids and strikers are going to be unwanted. But not defenders. There's going to be value there. Only 40 defenders are going to be drafted in an 8 team league. That leaves a massive pool of defenders to pick up week to week playing the fixtures trying to find clean sheet potential

Not this statement again. Not going into an arguement over it but one has earned their money and spending it the other has been funded by oil.
City Chelsea and I think I heard Liverpool have spent less than tem over the last 10 years.

Many of the elite clubs are now just investments, or the playthings of the uber-rich. Soulless collectives of mercenaries who'll jump ship for the highest bidder. Loyalty is almost a thing of the past and money is king. How long before fans give up attaching their emotions to what have essentially become brands? I've trained myself not to care if 'my' team win or lose. I'm just a customer to them. Maybe we're going to see a shift in support towards grassroots clubs with a more local / community focus?

One important feature that appears to be missing from the draft game is a D/L spot (spot for injured player) An important part of the American games is the ability to store an injured player and temprorarily replace him with someone from waivers.
It could get ugly in the fpl format if injuries to key players occur, they too good to drop but there nowhere to put them. There the bench but that normally needs using for sub appearances, not as a store for injured players

Each player is worth the same in each position so as long as you have another in the same position who is fodder, you'll be fine. Play 442 and you'll have an extra in each position.

This is a common source of frustration and joy in my draft league. I think its a good thing as it free's up players, someone out for 2 months? Time to ship them on. Player reportedly 2 weeks from coming back, might be time to grab him before someone else does. Without injuries taking big players out of the game for over a month at a time draft would be get stale.

It is ok for the average players. How long would Kane need to be out for before he was dropped? Would need to be months I suspect, in a deep league it would likely mean curtains for any chance of winning.

Me no understand how I have an advantage in a draft league, they are very simple to play and really it is knowledge of players that is important, not knowledge of game machanics which can be quickly picked up by anyone wanting to make the effort

Well if Utd get Lukaku, I can't see Matic going to Utd. Leaves a few players to fill that void, Dier or Fabinho, anyone else that could be bought?

I was thinking that was more in place of signing Matic or Fabinho, an alternative DM if they can't secure those targets.

Any might be good, with a possible consequence of freeing up Pogba, who could have more scope to roam forward with a DM protecting the back 4.

In the FPL draft, if I trade my player with a free agent in the 24 hour window, between the waivers being sorted and the deadline, can any other player get him in directly on the FCFS basis or will that player be ineligible and go in next week's waiver?

Because if the player can directly be cooped by another person, this can be used to trade players between 2 competitors.

Some abbreviations that should be changed in FPL imo:

Brighton are BHA on the ticker (but should be BRI I think)

Burnley should be BUR not BRN - BRN could easily be confused with Bournemouth or Brighton if seen in isolation.

BOU/BOR: could take it either way, but I'm used to bou, bor looks a little awkward.
      SOT: 100%.
BRI/BHA: depends if you're used to saying Brighton or Brighton Hove (Albion).
      CPL: 100%.
MUN: prefer it this way but see why mnu could work.

    6. the snazzy viking
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

I'd say the ones that you prefer depend on opinion and/or how you say it. eg. Bournemouth sounds like "Bornmuff" so the BOR would make sense there. SOT is good if you're relating to the name So'ton but I can see why people prefer SOU more. BRI and BHA depends if you call it Brighton or Brighton and Hove Albion. CPL relates to the three syllables that you hear in the name "Crystal Palace" so it's (C)rystal (P)a(L)ace. For Manchester United, lots of people shorten it to "Man U" or "Man United", so I just feel that MNU is better.

I'm probably over complicating this but I'm getting this across before the pages are filled with RMT's

Looking at Lacazette's price, have FPL missed a trick? He's so 'on the money' that the folk who were tempted by a heavy top 3 might be boring instead?

    1. Postman Ty
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

I think there's too much hype for him. He's done well in France, but their league is a playground. He's very small so will be limited on the type of goals he can score. Almost half of his goals last season were penalties, and pretty poorly taken ones at that from what I saw. We'll see how he does, I'm not too keen but he could honestly find his way into my GW1 teamsheet at that price looking for Arsenal attack cover.

      1. Netley Lucas
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 11 months ago

Price looks a bit full tbh. Makes it a bit too easy to 'watch & wait'. Had they been bold and launched him @ 9.5 then I think a real dilemma would have been created.
Premium strikers are an area where genuine pricing arguments can be made more so than other areas. FPL have played it a bit too safe with him I think.

        1. Postman Ty
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 11 months ago

Interesting. I guess it is a fair bit more than the likes of Costa etc last season. But I would expect him to outscore Costa so I think it's a fair evaluation. Definitely not 'must buy' price.

Scored goals from all over the shop with the ball at his feet. Looks a solid / confident penalty taker to me, though granted he's one of those who doesn't seem to strike the ball too cleanly. He's not the next Henry by any means but I'm expecting the best part of 20 goals

That's what I was referring to; he puts most of them in the corner fine, but they are well scuffed and easily save-able. From the highlights I saw there were very few goals outside of penalties and around the 6-yard box tap ins.

Always amazes me when a top player struggles to consistently make decent contact with the ball :D. Scored something like 23 out of 28 career pens though, so doing something right.

Did you watch the full 37 or so goals from last season?? Decent variety in there - Certainly not just a 6 yard predator.

Lacazette does well, bargain. If Alexis gets his £400k and stays, on the inside left, he could become slightly overvalued as an asset that tbh may not be the obvious FPL captaincy option for Arsenal let alone v Kane, Kaku...

Will certainly be hesitant to Captain Sanchez until we see how the new piece of the puzzle fits in.

If Kaku does end up at Utd I've got him down as a strong C option for the first five GWs.

Probably feel they've got him for next te nowt and can help the youngsters etc. Not really buying his playing ability maybe and thinking it's a useful thing?

Rooney seems to be the 'thing' that's getting this deal done. Maureen seems to be giving him away to get Kaku...

United need to lose Rooney, he has been a problem for recent managers, with Van Gaal in particular a little scared to drop him .The transformation of Utd will be complete once he goes

Utd will have to up the transition pace to get the best from Kaku, ponderous build-up won't work. Rashford is a bright spark...

We can certainly counter attack a lot more effectively with Lukaku's pace than we could with Ibra

When he has a team more in his mould with players he has full trust in the handbrake will come off a lot more.. the big away games nothing will ever change it will be stop the opponent nullify and counter effectively when the chance comes..

Yep this is the worry, the negative tactics saw some incredibly low goal totals for Utd. Often the form tables would show only Four or Five goals scored in last Eight. And that was at old Trafford !!

      1. KingNidge
        • 8 Years

Was certainly some negative tactics away from home in the bigger games but fair to say poor finishing was often the biggest reason for United'd low scoring

And toward the last month or so the towel was pretty much thrown in as Jose went all in for the EL

I did hear there are companies that hold competition money and pay out when event finished. Think this is common for the American Fantasy sports, have no idea if they would be feasable outside of US though

I'm surprised how fascinated most people are with transfer fees.

All the 'he isn't worth that much', 'Y player is worth more than x', 'x million gets you this kind of player?!' etc.

You need to change your perspective, football (whether you like it or not) is a business.

If you buy a twix from a shop- it'll cost you X. If you buy a twix from someone who doesn't want to sell their twix, it will cost you more than X. If you buy a twix from someone who is desperate to sell it, they will sell it for less than X.

The age of the twix will come into the pricing, the potential to sell the twix later will come into the valuation of the twix and importantly your own resources. If you have 10000x and you REALLY need a twix (or at least think you do), you'll be willing to pay much more than x, maybe 10x or even 100x.

Imagine that the twix now wants to get the best deal it can for itself- of course it is going to hire someone to 'facilitate' the best it can, its a twix not a finanial negotiator!

Chelsea and City owners buy up foundries and oil rigs willy nilly while Madrid, Man U and Barcelona regularly make over one hundred million in profit a year. Their lines of credit would be astronomical.

    TL;DR

Players are priced well accordingly to the market. Big clubs have lots of money and chase a limited pool of talent. Of course they get paid a lot- look at hedgefund manager headhunting as a comparison.

This is true but we have to add-in the agent too. Pogba's fee contained a huge agent fee and from what we're reading Lukaku's "Chelski stumbling block" may have been agent fee?

There is shoddy work going on in the market, make's the 70's bungs look like child-play.

If the EU commission on these things ever takes note there could be mayhem... 😆

Such is the skulduggery in football these things can only be leaked, for very good reason.

Regulation is deliberately behind the curve for obvious reasons. It will be exposed and your 'market-forces' argument will have an added twist... as the billions in fines hit the owners. 😆

Ha yeah, as a football fan, I'd love to see Raiola et al get done like Platini and Blatter. My point about the money is- if someone is willing to pay it, someone will be willing to accept it.

I don't think your original argument is bad. A market based on the real concept within the rules is fine. The problem is it's not working and the regulators are in on the scam. 😆

Err....it's human nature mate, what are you on about? The banter comes with being rich and being able to get what you want whenever you want. It applies to all walks of life. There's this Ferrari you really want but can't afford, but your mate with a rich dad goes ahead and buys it. You ain't wishing him the best of luck in life and hoping his car lasts forever. You're more interested in the story of how he got ripped off or overpaid, simply because you couldn't afford it.

Strange way of looking at life, my friend.

If it was a mate who ended up in the Ferrari then that's good times all round: road trip to the south of France, whatever. Life's too short to be envious for no good reason.

Dude, what you are doing is rationalizing. It is not to say every one walks around being bitter at richer or successful. You are not going to be envious of that person for the rest of your life. Don't tell me it doesn't happen to you at work when promotions are announced. There's always that split second where you wish it were you. On an anonymous forum, everyone can just express their opinions with no consequences, hence the increased banter. I just find it hard to see how you didn't get what I was trying to express. Sure, I may not have worded it right but I surely didn't need to type all this out.

Yawn. You think that's scathing? You need to get out more. If you don't like it, flag it and move on. If Triggerlips doesn't like it, he can flag it. Let the mods do their jobs. Maybe it is totally uncalled for for you to describe his comment as a scathing attack? Is that uncalled for to call for a lifetime ban? Is that bullying to try to rally troops against somebody without addressing the comment directly to WR? Why haven't you replied to the WR comment with your thoughts directly?
