Scout Report – Jacob Murphy

Newcastle United followed up the signings of midfielder Christian Atsu and defender Florian Lejeune by completing their third major summer purchase with the addition of Norwich City winger Jacob Murphy for a reported fee of £12 million.

The England U21 international joins the club that he scored twice against last season in the Championship, and Magpies boss Rafa Benitez believes the 22-year-old can really thrive in his new environment:

“He’s a young and talented player and hopefully he can develop even more here. We hope he can show us the passion, commitment and ability that he showed in the Championship last season… It’s the type of player we are looking for.”

The History

Murphy joined Norwich’s youth set-up at the age of 11 and was a member of the side that won the 2012/13 FA Youth Cup.

He made his professional debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie against Fulham in January 2014, before taking in loan spells at League One side Swindon Town and League Two outfit Southend United during the second half of the 2013/14 season.

The midfielder then joined fellow Championship club Blackpool on loan, producing two goals and a single assist in nine appearances, and also spent time at League One sides Scunthorpe United and Colchester United, where he registered four goals and three assists over 11 matches.

The Canaries decided to send Murphy on a season-long loan to League One outfit Coventry City, where he enjoyed a very successful campaign, totalling nine goals and 10 assists in 40 outings.

Murphy finally got his chance at Carrow Road last season, producing eight goals and eight assists over his 37 league appearances.

He has represented England at U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of this summer’s UEFA U21 European Championship.

The Prospects

After making Atsu’s loan move permanent earlier this summer, the addition of Murphy will provide the Magpies with another creative threat out wide.

In Matt Ritchie, Newcastle have an industrious player who can not only provide goals, but who also has the ability to deliver quality into the box.

The former Bournemouth wide man isn’t blessed with pace, though, so Murphy, who is capable of playing on either flank, although he played predominantly down the right for Norwich, should provide a good balance if he operates on the left for Benitez’s side.

Murphy, a boyhood Newcastle fan, is quick, direct, and also has an eye for goal.

When asked what he can bring to his new club, Murphy took the opportunity to outline these qualities and underline his suitability as a Fantasy asset.

“What will I bring? An attacking flair. Pace. I’m very direct and I like to shoot. I like to provide chances for the team. I’m an attacking wide midfielder so I will try my best to get goals and assists for this club.”

Although he is still very raw, and can drift in and out of matches, the 22-year-old looks to have the attributes to thrive under the tutelage of Benitez, who should ensure that Murphy doesn’t neglect his defensive duties, something he has been guilty of in the past.

That will be important, given that Benitez favours a 4-2-3-1 formation in which his wide players need to track back and offer protection in front of the full-backs.

Looking at Murphy’s underlying statistics from last season, he impressively averaged a shot every 29.82 minutes – better than both Ritchie (31.67) and Atsu (43.64).

But while Murphy provided a stronger goal threat, he only managed to produce a key pass every 61.02 minutes, inferior to both Ritchie (44.34) and Atsu (54.17).

The England U21 international may lack slightly in the creativity stakes then, but his goal threat, and specifically the quality of his finishing, make him an intriguing Fantasy prospect.

Murphy’s potential is likely to see him come in at between 5.5 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and given Ritchie has the majority of set-piece duties and is on penalties for the Magpies, he may need to come in at the cheaper end of the scale to tempt investment.

But Newcastle attackers are certainly on the radar, with their early fixtures (TOT hud WHM swa STO bha) very favourable following the daunting opener with Spurs.

Dwight Gayle and Ritchie are proven commodities, however, while Murphy has only played one full season in the Championship, so it is difficult to look past the more experienced pair from the off.

Newcastle’s pre-season matches will hopefully provide some insight as to how much faith Benitez has in Murphy.

The potential is clear with his valuation a key factor, but a lack of experience makes him a target to monitor, with team-mates Ritchie and Gayle currently the more assured options.

Looks really good. Thought it was over budget originally but quick add up in my head says it's ok.

Subs are diabolical and you have midfield rotation risks so you could argue that any points gained from squeaking a slightly better team out are lost when you field 10 but I've often taken this approach in the past. Can go either way.

      Still, I like it.

If you go with Salah, the whole midfield has at least an element of rotation risk.

Admittedly the risk for each is small but you have to add those 4 small risks together and then it becomes a significant one.

Not saying it's a bad idea, just worth considering.

If I go Phillips instead of Tadic I could upgrade Long to a 4,5.

Pogba and Pique too. But it's just what happens at big clubs. They need top quality, immediately, to compete for titles. Zaha didn't progress fast enough.

Pogba should have been played more... but over Scholes?

Chappelle just told me he picked a new team! OMG so excited:

    De Gea Lloris
    Alonso Walker Toby
    Sanchez KDB Mané Özil
    Kane Lukaku Lacazette

    He doesn't even need subs.

Here's one for you mate, this is a genuine wonder I have about the game I've been playing 8/9 years now, and it's does anyone have a set Fantasy strategy year in, year out. Might be a bit of a broad question but to explain, this is basically me every season and how I operate.

          Pre-Season:
Spend the month assessing players on Wikipedia, their values, histories, try and get an idea of those cheap big hitters, watch the friendlies for tactical formations, form etc, I think that's most hardened fantasy players...

          Tactic:
Opening weeks I always favour a heavy midfield/ attack. 3.4.3/ 3.5.2 always, I do this as I try my best to anticipate price rises in the mids/ attackers early and think the defenders rise at a slower rate as less likely to have double digit returns.

          Wildcard:
Every season, without fail, I've wildcarded in either week 1 to week 5. Always do that as I quickly realise I'm missing out on 3-4 big hitters and I want to get my flops out early and get those price rises. Mahrez of a couple years ago for example, his double digit early return made me tear up my whole template to get him in.

          Season:
After that opening wildcard I will basically "Moneyball" the season up until and preparing for the double game week fixtures. By "Moneyball" I basically just either bandwagon on any low value big hitters or try and anticipate players who will likely hit form soon, using the classic way, fixtures, form, opponents got too many injured defenders etc, same old.

Second Wildcard: I always use this a couple of weeks before the "Big Scoring" double game week, so not the Palace, Boro double game weeks, I largely ignore those. But when the big 6 have double game weeks, I will put out all double gameweek players two weeks before, so I've a squad of 15 playing twice, then the next week I'll use the bench boost so that gives me 15 players playing twice (hopefully)

Triple Captain: I'll play this on a double game week player in the weaker of the double game weeks, so last season was when it was Arsenal were playing twice and so were Boro, Palace etc, I just shuvved it on Sanchez and it worked out.

New Chip: Thinking of this chip, I think I'll just play it when I've got too many injuries or players with difficult fixtures, or if I get through the season unscathed, I'll just use it for the final match day.

This tactic has served me well for the past seasons. I've had a top 4000 finish a few years ago, and I'm usually around the 20-40,000 mark (had a couple 300k years in the beginning though)

Another little trick I have, is playing a bit of football manager at work which just keeps me up to date with players around the world and I can sometimes spot a new transfer from France or somewhere that my mates may miss, but I'm just trying to think of any player that's worked for me on, and I actually can't think of any, so it may keep me in the loop of players, but is largely pointless.

I am genuinely interested in other players tactics though, how they go through a season, when they likely to play their chips, are they reactive players or proactive? and if there's any logic to this game that can actually benefit your season.

I'll tune in to your show regardless if my question is answered, it's a bit too much drivel for some!

          Cheers bud

Crystal Palace have signed a new CB/LB/DMC (he does all 3). so Tomkins probably not nailed. But hopefully Riedewald comes in at 4.5m and starts.

But I want him 4.5m and FPL are always watching, so yeah I agree, he won't start 🙂

            Trippier, Cedric, Daniels
            Coutinho, Alli, Sane, Willian
            Kane, Lukaku, Ayew

            (Myhill, Mee, 4.0, Carroll)

You are so stealing Arsenal Gent's thunder...

Back three will be any of the following - Monreal, Mustafi, Holding, Mertesacker, Gabriel, Bellerin.
I suspect it will be Holding, Mustafi and Monreal until Kos comes back. But Mertesacker has been on fire of late, so he might come into the middle of the three.

Should I downgrade KDB to Sane if it means I can upgrade Ward-Prowse to a 7.0 mid (possibly Lanzini? Already have Ramsey)

Same dilemma here - although Fraser instead of JWP.

I think the answer depends on how nailed our 5.5 are. Much as I want to have KDB, the answer is probably "yes".

Sane might be more of a rotation risk, so I think the 7 needs to be nailed. Maybe Zaha or Lanzini?

Not much wrong there - although many will say that there are better options at 9.5 than Ozil.

Rangel has quite ownership, so if he doesn't play (likely) he may drop in price quickly.

Gayle as good as any at that price range.
