Sky Sports Fantasy Football – The Overhaul

Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one” scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one” situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

Coming Next…

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be providing player list articles, man of the match analysis and lots more to help guide you through to the season kick-off.

Also, I’ll be talking through the week’s action and upcoming plans with Fantasy Football Scout regulars Buffrey and Lewis on our regular podcast – the latest episode can be found here.

Which very different team would you go for? Really appreciate comments as genuinely stuck between them and interested in consensus views. On B for now.

    A
    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier Bailly Bertrand (Francis Mee)
    Salah Willian Alli Zaha (Carroll)
    Lukaku Austin Jesus

    B
    DDG (Elliot)
    Walker Trippier Bertrand Dawson (Mee)
    KDB Willian Zaha (JWP Carroll)
    Lukaku Kane (Abraham)

Could still get Kane for Jesus if u downgrade Baily and Bert

      I prefer B also.

I would downgrade Walker to Kompany and Bertrand to Cedric. Not sure either justify the 0.5m price deference.

      Saves 1m.

Allows you to upgrade Abraham to Austin. I think Abraham is a good player but in the wrong team to get goals. Austin may not be the answer either so in that case you could pump money into midfield or defence of hold.

Thanks for this. I would go Cedric but may not start season Could go Pied @4.5 I guess or Yoshida @5.0. Perhaps Kolasinac instead of Walker as looked very attacking and concerned at Kompany staying fit

It worked really well for me last year, I.E. picking a team specifically set up for 3 GWs, get a great start, then WC a "real" long term team.
It's not everyone's cup of tea but I will do it again and hope for a similar good start (was 11k after 3 GWs).

Just stick to your guns mate but don't be afraid of an early WC if it doesn't work out.

I'll stick to my guns unless new info (e.g. Austin nailedness and/or Jesus lack of nailedness) comes through. I'm actually considering the 523 to be a more long-term plan for me unless it's clear that it's losing me points. Defenders more predicatable, and no need to rush them in and out of the team without injury. And not buying into the preplanned midfield switcheroo that many are depending on. Hoping not to WC unless it's really really obvious I need to 😀

That's the problem nobody agrees with a 5 at the back but played right it could be good, it is only a game at the end of the day

I fancy doing 5 at the back and it is he premier league -
First 5 games this first 7 games that, it doesn't ever seem to work out. If it did we would all do bets and win all the time

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years

There are so many ways to justify 5 at the back, I feel tired thinking about typing them all out again in the simplest way for people who don't want to understand. It's pointless haha. But at the same time I don't want anyone on this site to be railroaded into a certain way of doing something. Not only is it boring but it's not good for discussion/community/diverity and ultimately FPL points, because there's no room for innovation or.....thought.

I'm not doing to to cover CSs or anything. The good fixtures, if I'm covering them, I'm covering them for attacking and defensive potential. Cedric and Bertrand are just great value with those fixtures. Kolasinac is great value. There's so much value in my opinion that I shouldn't be ridiculed for picking these players for my team. Other people think the value is elsewhere, but really the main arguments against 5 at the back I see are about balance, structure and flexibility, which I don't buy into 100% anyway, but there's no room to talk about it, with al the twits on here haha

5 at the back has never worked in fpl over the medium-long term. Plus only 2 starting mids when, over the years, mids have been the highest point scorers in the game is a big risk

Yep well aware of the history as I've played for a good few years but GW1 is the only time you try something very different, knowing you have early WC to rectify if it doesn't work.

The mids are more expensive this year. This logic is like this http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/27/moving-target-izzy-brown/?hc_page=4#hc_comment_15961714

You gotta adapt your team for the changeable aspects of the game. Like going 352 last season. Well traditionally 343 is better so you should never go 352? Any tactic is valid, and you don't know enough (no-one does) to say that it won't work this year (or this first 2-10 GWs)

Willian short term, but I think u will need to rearrange ur team to much to fit in salah or another 9-9.5 later. Just smarter/easier.

Just swapped out Willian & Lacazette for KDB & Chicarito.

    Better?

Trying to squeeze KDB in without doing too much damage to my existing draft.

What are your thoughts on which team is better?

    1)

    ----------------Foster----------------------

    ----Alonso - Trippier - Cedric----

    Pogba - Alli - Willian - Redmond

    ----Jesus - Lukaku (C) - Defoe--

    Subs: Elliot - Loftus-Cheek - Mee - Rangel

    Or

    2)

    --------------------Foster----------------------

    Alonso - Trippier - Cedric - Daniels

    ----------Pogba - KDB - Willian----------

    --------Kane - Lukaku - Chicharito-----

    Subs: Elliot - Loftus-Cheek - Carroll - Rangel

B but I would downgrade Chicharito to gayle/Austin or direct swap with Gabbiadini (dependent on which saints striker is likely to start. If you downgrade, use the .5 to upgrade Cedric to Bertrand.

Are they likely to be rotated. If so there's not really much point in getting Austin as a 3rd Striker.
