Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Marcos Alonso nets twice at Wembley as Harry Kane’s August woes continue. Meanwhile, Aaron Mooy picks up the points again as Huddersfield Town maintain their 100% start to the season.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s brace of matches.

Peerless Alonso at the double

Marcos Alonso recovered from a zero-point return against Burnley in some style by bagging both goals in today’s 2-1 Wembley Stadium win over Spurs.

That disappointing tally against the Clarets had persuaded over 72,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to transfer out the Chelsea wing-back, yet his underlying numbers that day hinted at what was to follow – five efforts on goal in Gameweek 1 was more than any defender.

After last term’s six goals and five assists, it’s somewhat understandable that the Spaniard is the priciest defender on option in FPL at 7.0.

Despite an average of 5.7 points per match in the previous campaign, most have baulked at that cost, with just 11% currently owning Alonso.

Today’s 16-point haul once again reminded us that when it comes to premium priced picks at the back, the Spaniard remains peerless as a supplier of explosive returns.

David Luiz also remains a factor as a cheaper route into the Blues’ backline, though.

Stationed in front of the back-three as Antonio Conte opted for a 3-1-4-1-1 formation, he was brought down for Alonso’s free-kick opener, earning an assist to add to his goal against Burnley last weekend.

Priced at 6.0, he’s the most popular defender in FPL and sits in over 25% of squads.

Luiz fired a reasonable 31 efforts on goal last season – ranked sixth among defenders. So far, he’s registered four efforts in the first two Gameweeks – only Alonso, with seven, has managed more from the back.

Batshuayi back to bench-warming

Five goals in pre-season suggested that Michy Batshuayi could cement an early-season role on Antonio Conte’s teamsheet.

But the Belgian was named among the subs at Wembley due to the tactical reshuffle, with new boy Alvaro Morata handed a first start after his goal and assist off the bench last week.

Batshuayi started just one league match under Conte in 2016/17, with 19 further outings as a substitute. Given that his main impact was to nod Christian Eriksen’s free-kick past his own goalkeeper, it’s a fair bet that Morata looks set to lead the line at home to Everton next weekend.

Kane’s testing our patience

The hoodoo continues, but it’s certainly not for a lack of trying.

Shown the door by over 164,000 FPL managers last week, Harry Kane has now failed to score in all 12 Premier League appearances in August and returned back-to-back single-point returns after earning his second yellow card of the season.

But the underlying numbers could barely be more encouraging. He produced eight shots, with a total of six efforts in the box equal to Chelsea. He also hit the woodwork for a second successive Gameweek.

So far, Kane has registered 14 attempts in two matches, at least six more than any other forward. At this point last term, he’d managed six shots.

A home clash against Burnley surely offers him the tonic to address that lack of cutting edge, with the Spurs striker among the main captaincy contenders for Gameweek 3.

If he fails against the Clarets, though, the exodus will surely accelerate to new levels over the international break.

Eriksen delivers as Spurs show Wembley promise

While Kane spurned chance after chance, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli mustered just a single effort apiece, with Conte’s decision to crowd out the midfield denting their goal threat.

Once again, though, the Dane’s set-piece duties came to fruition – an assist for Batshuayi’s own goal takes him to three for the season.

Sitting in 18% of squads to Alli’s 37% and Kane’s 31%, Eriksen is now up to third in the midfield standings behind United pair Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on 19 points, and level with the top-scoring forward, Romelu Lukaku.

Spurs’ toils at Wembley continue, then – it’s now two wins, one draw and eight losses in 11 competitive matches at the venue.

However, the statistics suggest it’s not all doom and gloom. Mauricio Pochettino’s team outshot Chelsea by 18 shots to nine, though, firing 10 efforts inside the box – almost identical to their respective tallies of 19.6 and 10.2 at White Hart Lane last season.

Mooy moves into double figures

Aaron Mooy’s goal kept Huddersfield’s perfect Premier League record intact while cementing his emergence as a go-to budget midfielder.

The Australian followed up an assist at Crystal Palace with the winner against Newcastle United, from an Elias Kachunga assist. That took him up to 16 points in FPL and confirmed him as the most productive midfielder for 5.5 or less – indeed, Mooy is the top ranked midfield for value in terms of points per million.

Mooy’s ownership close to doubled after his role in the 3-0 opening day win as he continues to impress from a position that, on the face of it, doesn’t exactly scream offensive threat.

But despite operating from a deep-lying role in the double-pivot, he’s led the way for the Terriers for touches in the final third over the first two fixtures.

Add in the fact that he’s also the side’s primary set-piece taker and it’s clear to see why he has such potential for attacking returns.

Huddersfield’s kindly opening schedule continues for another four Gameweeks, giving Mooy further chances to build on his impressive start to the season.

Mounie misfires

If Mooy’s ownership burst into life following the Palace win, striker Steve Mounie’s practically exploded.

Over 160,000 managers brought him in on the back of his brace at Selhurst Park, only to see their new budget third striker fail to spark against Newcastle.

A booking kept him to just one point from a tepid afternoon in which he managed only two penalty area touches and zero attempts.

The 6.1-priced striker will hope for considerably better days as Huddersfield move onto fixtures with Southampton and Leicester City at home and trips to West Ham and Burnley.

Terriers keeping it tight

At least there were no such complaints for those owning Huddersfield’s backline and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

The Danish stopper made it back-to-back clean sheets and save points and is the only keeper to earn FPL bonus in both Gameweeks.

In front of him, two fellow 4.5-priced assets continue to rake in the returns as well.

Zanka, now the side’s most popular player with 5.1% ownership, and Christopher Schindler have both enjoyed good bonus returns to add to their shut-out points, with the latter bagging a maximum against Newcastle.

The German centre-half registered an eye-opening 17 clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), won five of six tackles and all four of his aerial duels in a towering defensive display.

Small wonder that three Huddersfield players now grace the top ten for points scored by defenders (Chris Lowe is also in there) and all three are the cheapest on that list.

Gayle lacking force

Dwight Gayle hit 23 goals to help Newcastle back into the Premier League at the first attempt.

His own return to the top flight has been deeply underwhelming.

Gayle managed 52 minutes at Huddersfield before being subbed off having mustered just a single attempt.

His replacement, new signing Joselu, proceeded to have four attempts – all of them on target – in an all-action 38-minute display.

Gayle (6.5) sits in 2.3% of FPL squads, the 5.5-priced Joselu in 0.2%, but it is the latter who has made a convincing case for inclusion when West Ham visit on Saturday.

Newcastle have yet to score this season, which only strengthens the lively Joselu’s case, particularly as Rafa Benitez’s side still have a very attractive schedule stretching all the way to a Gameweek 11 clash with Bournemouth.

GW1 is the week of the season when we have less information than at any other time. We also have less budget than at any other time. This stresses squad selection.

As a result, it takes some good fortune to get off to a fast start. Hegazi was a decent pick but no-one would have predicted his GW1 goal; his previous record was 2 goals in 120 professional games. WBA kept 6 CSs all last season and now have 2 in 2 this season. So Hegazi's points, whilst welcome for owners, are a fair bit beyond reasonable expectations.

All that's fine, it's part of the game. But it seems bizarre to me that those that have started very well want to boast about it. They have been a bit lucky and if they don't know that they are misleading themselves. The OR means very little until GW6 or GW8, the gaps are small right now and one fortunate decision (Hegazi rather than Dawson, Bailly rather than Valencia, Eriksen rather than Alli) can make a big difference.

Similarly, those that have started poorly can easily get into knots, take multiple hits, drop the wildcard and remove players that have essentially done nothing wrong other than not score many FPL points in 2 weeks. That's equally an over-reaction.

Stay calm and play for the long term is the best advice, isn't it?

Sage advice but after 2 weeks we have a good idea of which teams have started well and which are struggling. Plus we now know of team formations and there is more familiarity with promoted teams. So if someone has 4/5 changes lined up then better to pull the WC than take hits imo.

Well... I'd dispute the idea that the picture is that clear after 2 games. You'll find that after 6 games some of the assumptions being made now will be proven wrong either way.

When a team needs the wildcard is specific to that team and I'm not saying it shouldn't be used if the manager sees benefit. What I am saying is simply that things may not be as bad (or as good) as they look after only 19 games have been played. 95% of the season is still to come. 🙂

Everyone's FPL fortunes need luck and timing. Having that right player at the right time can be the difference for your season but I get your point that people thinking they are some kind of football FPL genius because they got lucky with a certain FPL player can be a tad annoying

        The voice of reason.

It really amuses me that so many wanted to make a transfer last week - even hits for heavens sake - after one game.

        Absolutely.

And don't look at only the points your players have got so far, but really look at how they're playing and remember why you got them in the first place. The people who sold Gabbi for Mounie after one week is a perfect example. If they planned for a month and chose to start with him, they have to stick with him for a bit longer, otherwise the joke is on them. No point in chasing lost points.

Can I ask for your wisdom regarding my team?

I'm currently playing 4-3-3 with Foster, Jones and a 4.5mid slot the only non premium players in my starting 11 (Although you could now argue Jones is a premium def).

So assuming that's 8.5 or 9 premiums in my team, do you think it's a viable strategy to rotate that 4.5mid slot with TC, RLC and Chalobah, or is it too risky?

I also have Ward (BUR) as 5th def if required.

        I'd appreciate your feedback yoda.

            Thanks for responding.

            Yes rest of budget is:

            5.5/ 5/ 5.5/ 7.0
            8.0/ 4.5/ 10
            8.5/12.5/ 11.5

            Subs: 4/ 4.5/ 4.5/ 4.5

You can probably guess most of my players from that. 🙂

Sorry about my last comment. I got a bit stroppy because I thought you were ignoring a fan. 🙂

              I wasn't online.

Looks fine to me until you can see where the value attackers are. It's as good a way as any to have Kane and Lukaku in the same team.

Personally I'd re-jig the defence to make use of rotation though. If you have a Burnley defender they could certainly play the home games and a Newcastle defender like Clark would rotate well.

Thanks. I'll definitely keep that in mind because there's no guarantee I'll stay big in attack and defence, so cheaper rotaters, especially in defence, may come into play for me later.

At the moment 3 of my 4 defenders are well known for their attacking talents so I don't see myself having to rotate them very often over the next few gws. Some could even be considered fixture proof if you buy into that type of thing.

Yes, I assumed that. I was thinking in terms of a defence with 3 regulars and 2 x 4.5m players rotating for the 4th slot.

0.4 itb. Still torn over Jesus vs KdB and the formation to be used. As of now would be playing 442 most weeks with the option of 352 thrown in.

Guess Bailly and Dawson can be downgraded to jones and Hegazi but am wary of selection issues in those teams.

      Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

If it's a WC team surely it's fixture proof for like 10 weeks?

GW1 team should be fairly fixture proof for the first 5 weeks or so anyway.

        Then when:
        a) Transfer window is closed
        b) International break is on
        c) Form is established

        You do your WC then.

I agree. Just meant few weeks in the sense that injuries can force some transfers over a month or 6 weeks.

Fair enough it makes sense to wait for the int break. But I did make some questionable choices in my GW1 team so was becoming impatient.

How much is Okazaki? If he's Prema bench why spend more on him? Get the cheapest guy and bench him.

5.5. Just didn't want to waste a 5 mn on a player who won't play much. At least with Okazaki he will be able to step up as auto sub most weeks.

      Foster/Elliot
      Davies, Mee, Ake, Yoshida, Hunemeir
      KDB, Salah, Willian, Ritchie, TCarroll
      Kane, Lukaku, Gabbiadini

Thinking of shipping Ritchie for Mooy or Richarlison? Or possibly Salah or Pogba/Mkhi? Which one more important?

Those who are planning sorts, which week are you planing on playing wc - is there a particular week that fixtures turn for a few teams? I've always traditionally done it over first international break, but wondering if I can be more patient this time!

I'd be looking at Everton's turn in fixtures. Last year was profitable when their fixtures brightened up, with Coleman and Kaku

Thoughts on this for a WC Team?

      Foster (Elliot)
      Alonso / Jones / Trippier / 4.5* (Mbemba)
      Mane, Eriksen, Pogba, Mooy, RLC
      Lukaku / Kane (c) (Quaner)

(Huddesfield/Mee/TAA)*, Mooy and RLC to fight for two spaces

Would you WC to this team? I'm considering this as set and forget, for next few GWs, ofc despite of injuries:

      Foster
      Alonso/Trippier/Jones
      Mane/D.Silva/Pogba/RLC
      Kane/Kaku/Chica

      Elliot/Carroll/Lowe/Long

Almost all bases covered, potentially strong enough? D.Silva can be Miki however wanted some City player, will also monitor him today. No Arsenal however they look avoidable as for now.

My transfer this week will probably be Danilo. Might get a 4.5 in to free up some funds or I could go the other way and get a 6m defender

I have him and watched the match. Gooner as well.

Just feel the setup is not working well with him and Xhaka. He is in the box most of the times but this forces Ozil to play deeper where he and Xhaka are on each other's toes. Stoke's goal came when Xhaka misplaced a short pass to Ozil. I am sure when Wenger starts playing proper CBs in back 3 the cohesion will improve. But the CM pairing will be forced to be less adventurous imo. Particularly when Alexis returns.

Have you wonder why you are always 1 week late?

Man Utd wouldn't win 4-0 weekly.

You want Pogba for Gameweek 2, not 3.

      Do not knee-jerk.

I have RLC - I haven't looked so much into the rotation issue, but he's more of an enabler for the other 3 mids

FWIW I thought he looked a proper player on Saturday, though I have no idea whether this will translate into FPL points

      35 points this week.
      1.6m OR.
Already chasing ML Leader by 37 points.
One of my worst starts! 🙁

      Foster
      Ake - Stephens - Bertrand
      KDB - Salah - Mkhi - Ritchie
      Kane - Lukaku - Mounie

      (Elliot - Carroll - Suttner - Long)

Where did I go wrong? Any ideas on this week's transfers?

      Any help is much appreciated!

Got my eye on that move.
Worried about KDB too. If he blanks tonight I'm likely to do KDB to Eriksen but then taking a hit for defence is useless.

Just be cautious not to be gambling on minus hits to return more points through. Especially if your only planning week by week.

Go back to the drawing board if you think it's needed, plan out the next 2-3 GWs and see who you really need.

It's only GW2 and your team is solid. Like everyone's team, small adjustments are needed.
