Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Saturday

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata maintains his impressive form with a goal for Spain as he continues to promote his Fantasy CV.

Here are the notes from Saturday’s international fixtures.

Morata the merrier

Alvaro Morata needed just 18 minutes to confirm his continued fine early-season form as Spain completed a convincing 3-0 win over fellow European football royalty Italy.

The Chelsea striker had to make do with a place on the bench as coach Julen Lopetegui opted to play with no recognised forwards at all, preferring instead to use Man City midfielder David Silva as a ‘false nine’.

But when Morata finally made it onto the pitch, he made an immediate impact, scoring Spain’s third goal a mere five minutes after replacing Andres Iniesta.

The strike means that he now has three goals and two assists from four matches this season, explaining why only Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is ahead of him in the Fantasy Premier League forwards standings.

It was widely anticipated that Morata would take time to adjust to his new surrounds at Chelsea; a theory that clearly played a part in deciding a modest 12.5% ownership.

Chelsea’s tough opening schedule also dampened early enthusiasm – the Blues have already played Spurs and Everton and still have to face Arsenal and Man City, albeit both at home, before Gameweek 7 is done.

But after their shock opening day defeat to Burnley, Antonio Conte’s side are starting to look every inch the defending champions, and Morata has clearly settled into his new role as their spearhead.

His goal and assist returns in both home matches to this point have sparked massive interest. More than 196,000 FPL managers have drafted in the Spaniard and, with 40,000+ making the direct trade, Morata has proved the most popular Harry Kane replacement ahead of Gameweek 4.

Of the strikers with two or more goals this season, only Romelu Lukaku can better his attempts (9), his minutes per chance average (20.9) and penalty box touches (15), while he and Firmino are the only strikers with two assists.

With Eden Hazard closing in on full fitness, Chelsea’s attacking threat – and supply line for Morata – is surely only going to improve, even if the Belgian is likely to regain penalty duties.

And based on current form, the forthcoming visit from Arsenal is not the test of old, which makes the Blues’ short-term schedule more palatable – (lei ARS sto MCI cry WAT bou), Man City notwithstanding.

Should he be given the chance to make hay in Spain’s Tuesday night trip to Liechtenstein, Morata will return to domestic duty for Gameweek 4 with form on his side, Hazard potentially supplying chances and with the fixtures more favourable than anticipated.

Elsewhere…

On a quiet night for Premier League players, Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn’s superb winner for Wales against Austria demonstrated the wealth of attacking options available to Jurgen Klopp.

Elsewhere in that encounter, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey shook off doubts surrounding his fitness to play 90 minutes.

Returning to Liverpool, Sadio Mane played the full 90 minutes as Senegal were held to a goalless home draw with Burkina Faso. They will now play the reverse fixture – a vital clash for the Senegalese – on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Man United centre-half Eric Bailly supplied an assist in Ivory Coast’s 3-0 win in Gabon. Spurs’ Serge Aurier completed 90 minutes for the visitors.

Brighton defender Shane Duffy gave the Republic of Ireland the lead in Georgia, only for Martin O’Neill’s men to have to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle United’s suspended striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored for the third match running in all competitions as Serbia beat Moldova 3-0, with Man United’s Nemanja Matic playing 77 minutes for the hosts.

Finally, Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson managed a second consecutive full 90 minutes of the season, but couldn’t stop Iceland slumping to a 1-0 defeat in Finland.

His goals against Malta appear to have stalled the sales. He's been hovering around -92% on fplstatistics for a week now.

Another goal in the next England game and it'll go into reverse and people will start buying again.

However blanking at Everton will likely cause the 0.1 drop.

An expensive defence and Mkhi & Pogba double up make it look cheap elsewhere. I suggest you pick downgrade at the back and pick only one of the pair to upgrade the attack.

Of course not, lose one of Pogba or Mkhitaryan (Mkhi could be dropped once the CL starts, but maybe he's more of a threat than Pogba). You don't have to downgrade Alonso, but why have Cedric, Hegazi and Naughton if you're always gonna bench 2 of them? Too much money to have on the bench.

Well surely Alli and Eriksen can cover Kane if you always (c) one of those two when Kane gets his hauls usually they are involved

              Usually, but not always.

There were a few times last season when they got 6 points each the same match in which Kane got a double digit haul. If most of the world captain Kane in a game like that and you captain Alli/Eriksen, you're still missing out.

I don't have a clear answer for this. Basically, when Kane(c) succeeds for others, you might have to succeed with another captain to keep up. Think it's risky to avoid Kane for the whole season.

I see where you are coming from but if your team spread is good and you own Alli / Eriksen then it should cover it

                  Flawed thinking, "cover" Kane.

IF Kane is going to haul, and when he does Alli or Eriksen are always involved then the sensible move is to get Kane PLUS Alli or Eriksen.

There was a guy here who said he tried it last season and it didn't work. Don't remember his name.

It's only the captaincy. Everyone over 10m is poor value when they're not being captained, not just Kane. Captaincy is not about points over the season. It's about points in a single gameweek that you double to give you a big push. If you get it right, how the rest of your team did that week hardly ever matters. Sure Alli and Eriksen will match Kane over the season, but who among Kane, Alli and Eriksen has the potential for the biggest haul in a single gameweek? It's always Kane. And that's where his value is.

Alli, Eriksen and Kane's points don't change depending on who you own. If it wasn't for captaincy Kane would be terrible value. Captaincy makes him a good or at least viable pick. If you don't want Kane because he's not value I presume you are going without lukaku too and even morata, Alexis, Hazard etc? Good tactic but captaincy becomes a nightmare.

          I'd keep Morata...he's value at 10.1m.

The other forward who offers value is Firmino @ 8.6m...he's as close to essential as it gets IMO

Which means ditching one of Kane or Lukaku for Firmino.

          I'd ditch Lukaku personally because:
          - Pogba and Mkhi cover his points in midfield more effectively than Alli/Erksen do Kane's.
          - you'll save 3m...and that 3m upgrade is enough to get the Lukaku cover in the form of Mkhi (you'll need to get the spare 0.2m from somewhere else)

Other than that, just the change of Yoshida to Cedric as mentioned above.

I screwed up my initial team with a weird distribution of funds thinking I was smart. Should have known better... And as I got a low score gw 1 I didn't want to fix my mistakes with massive hits. In the long run I feel I'm better off for using it when I did but I'm not very happy with my gw1 selection.

Will you still be going with a cheap bench or do you think, with the number of CL/EL games, maybe this year that isn't the best strategy?

          1. MTPockets
              6 years, 9 months ago

I always end up with a cheapish bench. Not the best strategy but the extra games are certainly one reason I've wildcarded - to spread funds around a bit more than 25m/33m on 2/3 players.

It's a marathon. Attack looks good. Focus on defence next week. Could be down to two starters soon.

This is my current WC team at the moment, any thoughts on how I can improve it? Currently, have 1.6 ITB

        Fabianski (Elliot)

Alonso - Davies - Cedric - Naughton (Mee)

Alli - Salah - Pogba - Brady (Carroll)

        Kane - Firmino (Abraham)

could possibly upgrade Tammy to Chicharito, and have I went too heavy in the backline?

Has anyone calculated how many games Kane got big hauls last year where one of Alli or Eriksen wasn't involved at all? I'm talking 2 goals or more by Kane

You're looking to justify covering Kane with Alli & Erik? There's the Wembley effect to consider too. Not simply that Spurs aren't finding it as easy as WHL, there's the possibility opponents are actually enjoying playing there.

        Foster (Elliot)

Alonso - Danilo - Stephens (Mee, Hunemeier)
Alli - Miky - Salah - Redmond (TCarroll)
        Lukaku - Firmino - JRod

        1FT, 1.8ITB.
        ---------------------------------------

        1. Who's Danilo's best replacement?
        2. Should I take further hit to upgrade Redmond this GW? Or do it next GW?

Thoughts on Pogba as a pick? Does he look dangerous enough to be good value for money or were his returns a fluke, he certainly shoots a lot.

        2 FTs. £0 ITB.

        Foster - Elliot
        Davies - Cedric - Daniels - Naughton - Long
        Salah - Willian - Ramsey - Fraser - Carroll

Willian, Ramsey, Fraser need addressing in midfield.

Lukaku, Kane, Jesus is WAY too heavy up front.

Put Firmino and Morata in the front line...keep your favourite of Kane/Lukaku, invest the saving in midfield.

You have Salah...so with Firmino that's enough 'pool

Focus on Alli, Pogba/Mkhi, maybe David Silva, maybe a cheeky Hazard if you want a differential.

On WC and currently have front 3 of Lukaku Firmino and Morata. I cant decide whether to leave enough ITB to get Kane in for Lukaku if needed or splash the cash now to squeeze in Alonso. Also have Mkhi and Erikson. Any thoughts? Cheers.

I'm going for the kane-in-for-one-hit option, but personal choice.

Really depends what you think for Swansea game. Personally not in a hurry as they have:
              9th PL, 13th CL, 16th PL, 19th EFL, 23rd PL, 26th CL, 30th PL
