Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 4

With just five days remaining until domestic action resumes, we’re launching our Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options for Gameweek 4.

Poor form or tricky fixtures for many of this season’s previous front-runners make this potentially the most open Captain Poll of the season so far.

That’s certainly the case for Liverpool’s front three Roberto Firmino (8.6), Mo Salah (9.0) and Sadio Mane (9.6).

With seven goals and three assists between them, the trio have served up at least 22 points apiece in Fantasy Premier League ahead of their trip to the Etihad. And more than 519,000 FPL managers have swooped for one of three during the international break.

Weekend hosts, Manchester City, have allowed the least shots in the box and crosses of any side over the opening three rounds of fixtures. But Liverpool’s record against top six sides under Jurgen Klopp makes for encouraging reading – they won five and drew five of their 10 matches last season and put four past Arsenal last time out.

This could see interest wane in City forwards Gabriel Jesus (10.4) and Sergio Aguero (11.5), particularly the latter after he dropped to the bench for the win at Bournemouth in Gameweek 3.

Yet Aguero’s exemplary scored record against the Merseysiders may persuade his manager to hand him a recall – he has played at home to Liverpool on five times in the league and scored in all of them.

Voting for Spurs’ own star trio, Harry Kane (12.5), Dele Alli (9.5) and Christian Eriksen (9.6) could also take a knock as they travel to an Everton side that has yet to concede at home in all competitions this season.

In 2016/17, the Toffees had the third best home defensive record, behind Spurs and Manchester United.

At least Eriksen, who has accrued three assists, and the two-goal Ali have Fantasy form on their side.

The same cannot be said of last Gameweek’s poll leader Kane, who once again failed to break his August curse despite leading all players for shots and efforts in the box over the first three matches.

Kane’s more superstitious supporters will take heart in a productive September so far on international duty, with a brace against Malta. Should he score again against Slovakia tonight, he may well punish the 118,000+ managers who have already ditched him ahead of Gameweek 4.

The holy grail of strong form and fixtures combines well for Manchester United this week and could ensure that Romelu Lukaku (11.7) takes top spot. The 58.1%-owned forward – who has scored four times on international duty – collides with a Stoke City defence at the Bet365 that was the fifth-worst side in terms of shipping shots in the box at home.

The Belgian has failed to score in seven of his ten league appearances against the Potters, though, while a midfield supporting cast of Paul Pogba (8.2) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.3) present further armband options. The duo sit joint-top in the FPL standings on 26 points apiece, seven clear of Lukaku.

Arsenal have one of the best fixtures of the week, at home to a Bournemouth defence that have conceded five times and handed opponents more penalty area attempts than any other side.

But the Gunners have their own form to worry about following that chastening loss to Liverpool.

This is likely to temper interest in Alexandre Lacazette (10.4), who dropped to the bench at Anfield, although the summer signing did score in his only home fixture of the season, against Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

An unimpressive showing against the Reds in Gameweek 3 could harm Alexis Sanchez’s (11.9) chances of captaincy poll success. His failure to secure a move away from Arsenal in the transfer window and reports of an ankle injury in training while on international duty with Chile this week are set to dampen his captaincy appeal.

Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that Sanchez scored twice in a 3-1 win at the Emirates during the corresponding fixture last season.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (10.1) should garner interest after scoring for Spain at the weekend and impressing since joining the London side this season. With two goals and as many assists, he has already been brought in by 203,000+ FPL managers ahead of his trip to a Leicester City side that has shipped six goals this season.

His team-mate Eden Hazard (10.5) makes his debut in our poll after recovering from a long-term injury. A goal against minnows Gibraltar for Belgian last week and a 26-minute run out against Greece last night indicates that he’s stepping up his match sharpness ahead of that visit to the King Power stadium.

Javier Hernandez (7.1) is among the intriguing differential options this week for West Ham’s first home fixture of the season.

He scored a brace against Southampton in Gameweek 2, but the Mexican international – who has been jettisoned by 99,442 managers this week – will not have it easy against newly-promoted Huddersfield Town on Monday.

The Terriers have yet to concede in the league this season, while the Hammers are rooted to the bottom of the table and are still in search of their first win.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 4 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Haven't seen much love for Morata (c) on here. If i do indeed go Kane-less on WC, he seems the best option to me out of Lukaku, Firmino and him. Or should I play it safe with Lukaku?

Leicester away I'd put on a par with Stoke away. Chelsea look back to near their best, Hazard back.

Cheers Eric, I may go with my heart on this one, got a good feeling about it. No doubt Kane will bag a brace and I will be -4 a week after WC bringing him back in!

You have to respect his authoritah.. Wouldnt go for kane though.. Everton is way better defensively than both leicester and stoke... Im going for kaku prolly to play it safe bc of his ownership (have the same front three as you professor)...Laca could be the huge differential if one has him though.

    Foster - Elliott
    Alonso - Davies - Jones - Hegazi - Mbemba
    Eriksen - Pogba - Tadic - Mooy* - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Chitarico

1 x FT, 0.2m ITB, WC long gone.

Any ideas? How bad is Mooy injury?

Mooy was ill so should be fine. You need a Liverpool attacker but I don't see a way to get one in with 1 FT so save the transfer and reassess.

An interesting read regarding Arsenals transfer activity. Shows that even though Wenger is a major problem, the problems are also somewhere deeper in the club.

Trippier might not play. Def not for the long run. might play till Aurier is fit.
Also Yoshida might make way for VVD.

Hmm, interesting! I don't see Yoshida losing his place, VVD will come in for Stephens I would imagine. Yeah, Tripp > Jones perhaps seems the obvious move unless I hold and play with 2FTs next time

You would at least think trippier will play the next game as a bare minimum.. No clue about the fitness of aurier though.. For the cap I would go for lukaku simply because of easier fixture.. Evertons backline is really decent imo.

Back in 2011 I think it was, he was mooted as the next big thing playing for Wigan, did amazing in preseason, did everything right, we all got him, something like 5.5m... built our teams around the guy...

            He.

                From Wikipedia:

On 29 June 2010, Boselli signed a four-year deal with Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee,[5] believed to be around £6.5 million.[6] He made his debut in the opening game of the Premier League season against Blackpool,[7] and scored his first competitive goal for the club against Swansea City in the League Cup on 26 October 2010.[8] However, following his first goal for the club, Boselli found settling into the English Premier League difficult. In March 2012, Wigan fans voted Boselli as the club's worst ever foreigner

                He was legendarily pathetically bad.

I think I like this WC team, but what do you think?

    Foster Elliot
    Alonso Cedric Naughton Lowe Mbemba
    Alli Salah Mkhitaryan Brady Carroll
    Lukaku Morata Firmino

The only position I feel not so sure about is Lowe's, so which other 4.5 defender would you put there?

Was on something similar but did Mkhi -> Richarlison and reinvested the 2m into...
      Carroll -> Atsu
      Lowe -> Maguire/Jones
      Foster -> Pickford

        Pickford - Elliot
        Maguire - Jones - Cedric - Naughton - Mbemba

Replacement for Kompany, few options (and I will have to play in starting XI since mainly fodder options elsewhere)
    A) Naughton, cheap and fine fixtures except Spurs GW5
    B) Davies, very attacking and good cs chances, but is Rose coming soon?
    C) Cedric double up with Bertrand
    D) Other

And did those feet in ancient time
        Walk upon England's mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
        On England's pleasant pastures seen?
        And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
        And was Jerusalem builded here
        Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
        Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

      Eriksen Mane Mkhi Pogba Salah

        On WC
        Team A,B or C?
        A) Foster, Elliot
        Alonso, Cedric, Jones, Naughton, Lowe
        Salah, Mikhi, Pogba, RLC, Carroll
        Kane, Morata, Firmino

Since alot of people are using their WC, which premium striker(s) do you choose? :-

        A) Kane and Firmino (Pogba and Mkhitaryan as MUN coverage)
        B) Lukaku and Firmino (Eriksen and Alli as TOT coverage)
        C) Kane and Lukaku (Salah and Mane as LIV coverage)

As you can see I want good coverage from the Devils, Spurs and Pool, but having trouble settling on the combination of them.
I have David Silva and Alonso from the other two big sides as well, which i am pretty settled on.

Not too keen on Kane and Lukaku together, it chews up a large portion of the budget which can be well spent on reasonably priced mids between 8 and 9 mil.

I'll consider Kane again when he acquires form. All 3 = 1/3 budget - oo much for me with context of internationals, CL.

Kane just scored twice and and got an assist in international game over the weekend?
Surely gives him a truck load of confidence, not to mention August has come to an end haha.

Lukaku has 3 PL goals, a better fixture this GW, an extra 2 days recovery time from CL before next GW, and manager hasn't just signed another 15G fwd.

Each to their own though - there are arguments both ways & I haven't 100% decided on squad.

                Foster (Elliot)

Alonso - Stephens - Mee (Danilo, Hunemeier)
Alli - Salah - Miky - Redmond (TCarroll)
                Lukaku - Firmino - JRod

                1FT, 1.8ITB

The 1FT is for Danilo > Jones.

Should I take a hit to get rid of Redmond vs WAT(H)?
