Scout Notes – Masterful Mahrez Turns Heads

Riyad Mahrez continues his rich form as Huddersfield struggle away from home yet again, while big-name Liverpool players miss the trip to Burnley, allowing Sadio Mane to remind us all of his Fantasy credentials.

Leicester City manager Claude Puel made minimal changes to the side that lost at Liverpool, although a minor groin injury meant Jamie Vardy missed out after 21 successive league starts – a blow to the 176,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who had made him one of the top ten acquisitions of Gameweek 22.

Islam Slimani replaced him and scored, but the undoubted star – of both the match and Leicester’s recent upturn in form – was Riyad Mahrez.

The midfielder was signed by 117,000+ FPL managers going into the Gameweek and his 9.1% ownership were treated to a goal, assist and maximum bonus for a season-high 14 points that took him to just two behind third-placed Kevin De Bruyne (125) in the midfield standings.

Mahrez has now produced returns in eight of the last nine Gameweeks, with five goals and four assists in that run.

Small wonder that he is second only to Man United’s Jesse Lingard as Gameweek 23’s most popular buy, even though the Foxes travel to Chelsea next.

Their schedule is set fair after that, a Gameweek 27 trip to Man City the only major test in a seven-match run (WAT eve SWA mci STK BOU wba) that will surely see the 8.5-priced midfielder’s ownership increase well beyond its current differential status.

Marc Albrighton continued his own decent run of form with a goal and assist against the Terriers – he’s now produced exactly half of his season’s output of two goals and six assists from the last four Gameweeks.

And even Leicester’s porous defence prospered with a first clean sheet in seven Gameweeks, perhaps unsurprisingly as Huddersfield have failed to find the net in eight of their 11 away fixtures.

One player to miss out on those points was Wes Morgan. He limped off with a groin problem and is now an early doubt for Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie at Fleetwood Town and, possibly, the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Salah and Coutinho miss out

Those not in attendance were of as much concern to Fantasy managers as the players on the pitch for Burnley’s home match with Liverpool.

Of the Reds’ three most popular FPL assets, only Roberto Firmino (37.0%) even made it to Turf Moor, with coach Jurgen Klopp citing injuries for the absence of both Mohamed Salah (50.7%) and Philippe Coutinho (15.7%)

“Phil are Mo are injured, not massively but enough for today [to be] no chance. And a doubt, at least a doubt, for Everton.”

Salah’s groin issue was well-known, prompting more than half a million managers to make him the most sold player going into Gameweek 22.

But Coutinho’s thigh injury was more of a surprise as rumours of an impending move to Barcelona were only strengthened by Nike’s over-eager promotion of the Brazilian’s prospective Barca shirt on their website.

The pair are currently top of the transfers-out table for Gameweek 23, when Man City will travel to Anfield, although both are highly likely to start – should Coutinho’s shirt not make an officially-sanctioned reappearance on Nike’s website by then, that is.

Firmino was benched in favour of Dominic Solanke today, the Brazilian’s owners having to make do with a one-point second-half cameo after previously reaping the rewards of four goals and two assists from five straight starts.

Only the 6.7% still clinging to Sadio Mane enjoyed profit from Liverpool’s “fab four” as he followed up an assist against Leicester City with the opening goal in the visitors’ 2-1 win.

If Coutinho does move on to sunnier climes, Mane would hope to be used rather more regularly again after starting only six of the last nine matches, while Klopp’s midfield options were also boosted by the return of Adam Lallana.

The England international started his first match of the season and was typically lively, firing in five shots on goal from range.

Klopp shuffed his pack at the back, with Ragnar Klavan recalled alongside Dejan Lovren as Joel Matip dropped to the bench and Joe Gomez replaced Andrew Robertson at left-back.

Klavan responded by scoring the winner – his first goal of the season – from a Lovren assist, adding maximum bonus for an 11-point haul.

Trent Alexander-Arnold provided the other assist, while Johann Berg Gudmundsson scored for the Clarets from substitute Sam Vokes’ assist.

Seagulls can’t keep it clean

A four-goal tear-up involving Brighton and Bournemouth was hardly ideal for those Fantasy managers looking to tap into the Seagulls’ current taste for clean sheets.

The visit from the Cherries looked a good bet for Chris Hughton’s men to record their fourth shut-out in five Gameweeks, only for goals from Steve Cook and Callum Wilson to ruin that particular scenario.

Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk had their net ownership boosted by 18,000+ and 11,000+ respectively ahead of Gameweek 22, but patience is a virtue worth trying on Brighton’s backline as their schedule (wba CHE sot WHU stk SWA) suggests more good defensive times still to come.

Further up the pitch, Glenn Murray scored his first goal since Gameweek 15 – his ownership has almost halved to 117,000 in that time – but the stand-out performer was midfielder Jose Izquierdo.

The Colombian recorded his first two assists of the campaign, although for a player who likes to cut inside and shoot rather than look for the cross, it was fitting that his first assist was actually an attempt on goal.

He had five shots, three from inside the box, in total, while Brighton’s most owned player, Pascal Gross (17.7%), created four chances but came away emtpy-handed – that’s now just one goal and no assists in ten Gameweeks for the German.

Anthony Knockaert scored the other goal for Brighton – his first return since Gameweek 11 – while popular Bournemouth defender Charlie Daniels (6.7%) returned to the starting line-up after a three-match absence and underlined his attacking credentials with three shots and a further three chances created.

The Cherries’ immediate schedule (ARS whu che) doesn’t exactly encourage short-term investment, however.

Starting 11 is likely what you would want on a wildcard so very good. Bench a bit weak but then rotation is not the issue it was possibly now.

I highly doubt Kane will rise much. And as a captainer I of course hope he will do well, but Aguero could very well match him this week I think. And Tottenham have 3 very tough fixtures coming up, while City do not.

After this week I think the Kanexit discussions will flare up again.

So far, my last ditch Free Hit appears to be borderline positive.
          FH team:
          Adrian
          Otamendi Cresswell Duffy
Eriksen (c) Son Arnatouvic Sterling Mahrez
          Kane Aguero

          Regular team:
          Adrian
          Otamendi Jones Dunk Mee
          Hazard Sterling Salah Richarlison
          Kane Firmino
          Subs: RLC DCL Naughton

Reckon it is worth doing this to the regular team for a hit?
          Hazard / Firmino -> Mahrez / Aguero

"He is so important for us," Pochettino said of Son. "He is scoring a lot of goals and he is very consistent in training and in his performances. I think he is a very good player for us.

"It is true that maybe he doesn't get the headlines of Harry and other players but it is good to recognise him. He is a great guy and a very good professional. He is always there and he scores a lot of goals.

"Us, the coaching staff, give him the credit that he deserves. I think last season he was very important. It's like a player next to Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo that deserve a lot of credit. When you are next to Harry Kane, who scores and scores, and all that he achieves it is normal that the focus is more on Harry Kane or on Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo than Son.

Solid, but what are people's thoughts with Quaner? He's had some minor returns, but don't you feel that you lose a lot of flexibility with having him in there? 4.5 million for a forward I feel is so dangerous. You can't upgrade him to ANYTHING!

Also, I don't think Arnie and Lingard will keep up this scoring form, so while they may be worth it short term, you may have to look at other options there...

Morning guys. Would you save a FT with this lot if no new injuries surface

          Pope
          Christensen, Alonso, Mee, Dunk
          Salah, Sterling, Alli, Son
          Kane, Firmino

If not, Alli to Mahrez or Son to Lingers.

Here is my prediction. Harry will be rested tonight... Liorente will get a run against his old club. Harry will play against west ham. Bag two goals and an assist. Sounds plausible right!? I'd be happy with that as I have him captain

it was on my thoughts that this would happen. as much as i dnt want to read too much into pou but yea he might give kane a small break to keep his fresh. they are chasing CL too with a host of local cups.

I don't think so. I'm pretty confident Harry starts. Tottenham are 6th and have already had a few hickups. Priority is making the top four and Pochettino knows how integral Kane is to their success.

If they smash Swansea and he plays the full 90, I think it's more plausible that he will give him a rest against West Ham, which is a home game.

Will cost 0.4 ish more to buy back. And he should be back for the next round of fpl vs city

Who knows how long the injury is for? Klopp was always going to downplay things. Plus Man City is the next game. One of the best defences in the league. No rush to get him back.

The best fact we got. Was that he would be out for two weeks.
Considering the next gameweek is two weeks. Made sense to keep him, unless you brought him late.

Made sense for some, while not for others.

If you have a healthy squad and ranking and feel you can afford to bench him, that's a good strategy.

If you had to free up funds and wanted to gamble on DGW'ers to make up some ground then that is also a solid strategy.

If you bought Salah at 9.0, then you would be able to sell for 9.5. If he is out or blanks against City, he could drop .3 meaning you can buy him back at 9.8

that's only 0.3 in value while you could have possibly gained 20+ points.

And used two transfers, which you should value as 4 points each regardless of whether they are hits or not, so that reduces the points profit a bit.

a little worried, found it astonishing he didn't drop after 500,000 sales.....but i swapped for eriksen, so hoping he can outscore salah over next three games (this DGW and next week) by 8 points before i sign back salah

Slightly worried he didn't drop last night. Plan was get rid and hopefully he drops 0.2 so I buy him back for 0.4 more than I sold. And that will be worth because alli vs Swansea west ham and Everton should outscore salah against city. But seems like salah may only drop once after last night non drop

what people seem to forget is it gives an added advantage where players who have sold salah will have the flexibility to sell him later in the season if he gets another setback or if on end of season wildcard

I think he means. Those who buy back more expensive, will not lose as much value when selling again. Easier for them to switch in/out.
Compared to the likes of players who brought for 9m.
We would not be able to switch out as easily.

Personally though. I will never sell. Unless long term injury

'right decision in due course' is just Captain Hindsight talk

Imo, the right decision was to hold TC given the yellow flag on Kane. If he scores 2 hat tricks so be it..fairplay to those that played it.. but it doesn't mean it was the right decision given all the facts at hand before the deadline

How can you say that? Based on his current form and those fixtures it was the classic risk vs reward. Are you a gambler or an fpl pundit? I enjoy risk and TC’d him and will have no regrets either way. I can’t see a better possible opportunity for an explosion of points

Because saying 'we will know the right decision' is a useless statement and you saying 'I will have no regrets' sort of contradicts the original statement and makes my comment in between redundant.

'How can I say that'? Because it's my opinion, simple as that

If he scores two hattricks it was pretty much ABSOLUTELY the right decision to TC! What kind of tricks is your brain trying to spin on you mr? 😀

Come on mate, you can't count the drop this GW after a handful of games and the hits counted straight up - they're out of the way now, you've got plenty of players left including triple Kane. You'll end up with a better rank at the end of the GW than what you went into it with.

Went from 77k to 473k in 5 weeks before Christmas then in 4 weeks got back to 98k.

Every FPL team, Prem team, striker or whatever will have a poor patch during their season.

You’re team looks great & very well set up for the double gameweek.

Get Salah after Man City game otherwise you’ll come back gradually just about picking the right captains!

The reason I did it was I thought salah would drop 0.2 so will purchase back at 0.4 more and alli vs Swansea west ham Everton will comfortably outscore salah against city. That being said salah not dropping yesterday is making me slightly worried and the smart thing to do would of been to hold onto salah

Salah is essential this season. His stats until now are a proof of that. Not captaining him hurts your OR, imagine what not owning him will do. 🙂

I've just left him on the bench this week. He's not going anywhere from my team unless it's a ban or a long term injury.

Gameweeks like these can make or break your season to an extent.

Triple City and triple Spurs playing tonight, expectations are high. Fingers crossed.

I won't say it's make or break yet. There are many teams still holding all 4 chips.

I think the biggest difference is when you use them. If the congestion gathers pace (many PL teams get into later stage of FA Cup, CL & Europa), there will be a lot of blank GWs and DGWs and how to make use of chips will determine the final biggest winner

That's why I wrote 'to an extent'. A big lead at this point will be crucial heading into the blank and the 'big' double gameweeks.

That being said, like you've pointed out - have all 4 of my chips intact which is going to be crucial during the later stages.

History told us WC then BB the GW afterwards is very beneficial around GW 33 to 37.

Just one thing makes me feel very annoyed is that sometimes you are waiting too late to WC when the massive blank gw happened too early. With FC, that problem could be totally solved.

TC is the easiest one to use. Any DGW having a premium player with great fixture can be applied, e.g Kane this gw. But given his illness, it should be better to skip. People should be aware a chance that he may only play one match. Personally, I would rather TC Aguero, let say if I must use FC this gw.

not FC, should be FH (Free Hit)

Reasonably unbiased, although of course like all mainstream Western media you must take the inevitable propaganda with a pinch of salt.

Tbf pretty much every single major news source in the world is full of shit nowadays. You could find examples of "fake news" in every single big media outlet, regardless of political orientation.
