Scout Notes – Masterful Mahrez Turns Heads

Riyad Mahrez continues his rich form as Huddersfield struggle away from home yet again, while big-name Liverpool players miss the trip to Burnley, allowing Sadio Mane to remind us all of his Fantasy credentials.

Leicester City manager Claude Puel made minimal changes to the side that lost at Liverpool, although a minor groin injury meant Jamie Vardy missed out after 21 successive league starts – a blow to the 176,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who had made him one of the top ten acquisitions of Gameweek 22.

Islam Slimani replaced him and scored, but the undoubted star – of both the match and Leicester’s recent upturn in form – was Riyad Mahrez.

The midfielder was signed by 117,000+ FPL managers going into the Gameweek and his 9.1% ownership were treated to a goal, assist and maximum bonus for a season-high 14 points that took him to just two behind third-placed Kevin De Bruyne (125) in the midfield standings.

Mahrez has now produced returns in eight of the last nine Gameweeks, with five goals and four assists in that run.

Small wonder that he is second only to Man United’s Jesse Lingard as Gameweek 23’s most popular buy, even though the Foxes travel to Chelsea next.

Their schedule is set fair after that, a Gameweek 27 trip to Man City the only major test in a seven-match run (WAT eve SWA mci STK BOU wba) that will surely see the 8.5-priced midfielder’s ownership increase well beyond its current differential status.

Marc Albrighton continued his own decent run of form with a goal and assist against the Terriers – he’s now produced exactly half of his season’s output of two goals and six assists from the last four Gameweeks.

And even Leicester’s porous defence prospered with a first clean sheet in seven Gameweeks, perhaps unsurprisingly as Huddersfield have failed to find the net in eight of their 11 away fixtures.

One player to miss out on those points was Wes Morgan. He limped off with a groin problem and is now an early doubt for Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie at Fleetwood Town and, possibly, the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Salah and Coutinho miss out

Those not in attendance were of as much concern to Fantasy managers as the players on the pitch for Burnley’s home match with Liverpool.

Of the Reds’ three most popular FPL assets, only Roberto Firmino (37.0%) even made it to Turf Moor, with coach Jurgen Klopp citing injuries for the absence of both Mohamed Salah (50.7%) and Philippe Coutinho (15.7%)

“Phil are Mo are injured, not massively but enough for today [to be] no chance. And a doubt, at least a doubt, for Everton.”

Salah’s groin issue was well-known, prompting more than half a million managers to make him the most sold player going into Gameweek 22.

But Coutinho’s thigh injury was more of a surprise as rumours of an impending move to Barcelona were only strengthened by Nike’s over-eager promotion of the Brazilian’s prospective Barca shirt on their website.

The pair are currently top of the transfers-out table for Gameweek 23, when Man City will travel to Anfield, although both are highly likely to start – should Coutinho’s shirt not make an officially-sanctioned reappearance on Nike’s website by then, that is.

Firmino was benched in favour of Dominic Solanke today, the Brazilian’s owners having to make do with a one-point second-half cameo after previously reaping the rewards of four goals and two assists from five straight starts.

Only the 6.7% still clinging to Sadio Mane enjoyed profit from Liverpool’s “fab four” as he followed up an assist against Leicester City with the opening goal in the visitors’ 2-1 win.

If Coutinho does move on to sunnier climes, Mane would hope to be used rather more regularly again after starting only six of the last nine matches, while Klopp’s midfield options were also boosted by the return of Adam Lallana.

The England international started his first match of the season and was typically lively, firing in five shots on goal from range.

Klopp shuffed his pack at the back, with Ragnar Klavan recalled alongside Dejan Lovren as Joel Matip dropped to the bench and Joe Gomez replaced Andrew Robertson at left-back.

Klavan responded by scoring the winner – his first goal of the season – from a Lovren assist, adding maximum bonus for an 11-point haul.

Trent Alexander-Arnold provided the other assist, while Johann Berg Gudmundsson scored for the Clarets from substitute Sam Vokes’ assist.

Seagulls can’t keep it clean

A four-goal tear-up involving Brighton and Bournemouth was hardly ideal for those Fantasy managers looking to tap into the Seagulls’ current taste for clean sheets.

The visit from the Cherries looked a good bet for Chris Hughton’s men to record their fourth shut-out in five Gameweeks, only for goals from Steve Cook and Callum Wilson to ruin that particular scenario.

Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk had their net ownership boosted by 18,000+ and 11,000+ respectively ahead of Gameweek 22, but patience is a virtue worth trying on Brighton’s backline as their schedule (wba CHE sot WHU stk SWA) suggests more good defensive times still to come.

Further up the pitch, Glenn Murray scored his first goal since Gameweek 15 – his ownership has almost halved to 117,000 in that time – but the stand-out performer was midfielder Jose Izquierdo.

The Colombian recorded his first two assists of the campaign, although for a player who likes to cut inside and shoot rather than look for the cross, it was fitting that his first assist was actually an attempt on goal.

He had five shots, three from inside the box, in total, while Brighton’s most owned player, Pascal Gross (17.7%), created four chances but came away emtpy-handed – that’s now just one goal and no assists in ten Gameweeks for the German.

Anthony Knockaert scored the other goal for Brighton – his first return since Gameweek 11 – while popular Bournemouth defender Charlie Daniels (6.7%) returned to the starting line-up after a three-match absence and underlined his attacking credentials with three shots and a further three chances created.

The Cherries’ immediate schedule (ARS whu che) doesn’t exactly encourage short-term investment, however.

Despite his history with DM, I considered Chicharito as a differential. But opted for a more defensive strategy with all the WC and FH chips that were allegedly being played heading into the deadline.

Foster, Hegazi are a no-fo for me, WBA are muck. Long wont play, Kenny tough fixtures and Coleman returning in future.

Also need Sterling instead of Silva, and I dont like Hazard as an option.

On WC, I try to make sure Id be happy to keep every player for medium term, the 4-5 coming GWs at least. Its very tough to make pre-planned transfers work because injuries, bans, form changes etc.

Jones, Stones, Salah, Lingard, Kane and Kun are great picks imo, but Id change the others, probably downgrade Hazard and upgrade defence and bench.

Sterling over Silva definitely but not the other 2. Hazard has great upcoming fixtures and Stones is a million cheaper than Otamendi and he’ll match Otas output.

He may not even play. If Kompany is back he will be the preferred partner for Otamendi. Hazard's form is shite so you're paying 10.7 for a player that couldn't even score when played as a lone striker over the last few games. Even last game, 5 goals from 5 different scorers and he wasn't involved in a single one - either a goal or assist. Mahrez also has a nice run of games coming up and he is involved in most of the goals Leicester score.

Because Hazard was rested last game. Pep loves John Stones and he’s the best ball playing centre half they’ve got. He’s already bagged 3 goals in the Champions League this season. Kompany is always injured anyway. I’d imagine Pep will want to rotate the 3 centre backs to give Ota a rest some games.

Hahaha yeah I remembered as I clicked "post". I still don't think he is worth nearly 11m. I have Morata and am looking to shift him for either Aguero or Firmino. Just not worth the money. Pep does like him but I still think, if all are fit, he is the least likely to play so why not pay a bit more and get a more guaranteed starter. If this were just a free transfer, I could understand making the compromise but it is a WC.

Ooops! I realised as I commented hahaha Point still stands though. He has not been in good form and is not worth nearly 11m. I wouldn't bring him in but if I had him already, I would debate keeping him.

Imo. Get rid of Foster for Pickford.
      Speroni is fine
      Jones is fine
      Stones is fine
Swap Kenny to Huddersfield defender. Zanka?
Swap Hegazi to Christensen/ Chelsea defender. Great fixtures
Swap Long for another 4.5 playing defender.
      Hazard is fine
      Salah is fine
      Silva to Sterling
      Lingard is fine
      Swap TC to RLC
      Kane is fine
      Mcburnie to Quaner
Aguero to Firmino to fund upgrades listed previous.

      6/10 team

Kane aguero good I'm assuming mcburnie is bench fodder so that's fine RLC has more upside than TC and same goes for sterling and silva don't like double west brom defence so would get rid of either hegazi or foster.
Overall sterling is a must have and either hegazi or foster have to go maybe bring in Adrian or masuaku?

your defence is horrible lol. I would not take 4 out of 5 players. kenny points are behind him difficult schedule. Hegazi i would not take any wba players. Long will be benched from now on. Stones rotation risks. consider Otamendi, maguire, duff/dunk (good schedule long term), west ham defender (long term good schedule), or a liverpool defender long term too.
For the midfield hazard and silva could be replaced sterling/kdb and mahrez fixtures.

Almost 247k wildcards played. That mostly to accommodate the DGW, I wonder? Or maybe the number of injuries/illnesses (Salah, Cout, KDB, Kane, Vardy, Jesus, etc.)? I didn't even consider using mine--nor did I think for a second of selling Mo--so just curious is all.

I was happy with my pre-wildcard team but needed a boost in rankings.

I have been hovering the 100k mark for a long time. Most of my players that got me there have 40-50% ownership. I hit wild card as a way of getting a bunch of differntials in and to get a major boost via the DGW.

So far so good. 11 from 2 with 15 to play.

Team is pretty set up and will be easy to get Salah back in two weeks time on free transfers.

Duffy Shindler, Lascelles, Masuaku... All good options.
My advice is to study the ticker and find three of these 4.4 to 4.8 priced defenders to rotate with 2 premium defenders you'd play most weeks.
Don't forget Burnley. Great value in Tark and Mee

All those around that price range are pretty shite options in isolation - you're probably best off finding a couple you can rotate.

Niasse's fixtures change now with United and Spurs and then Sam is bringing in a striker so he probably won't get any game time after those two anyway. I might be tempted to not get a 6m striker and get a cheaper one and use the money in midfield or defence.

I have him and I agree with your logic in principle but I look at other strikers (Aguero, Vardy and Firmino) who are delivering and in the case of the latter two, are cheaper free up funds for midfield and I am thinking of selling

Im a believer that things tend to balance over the season. In this case, I think Firmino has had his purple patch and Morata may be due one. I could be completely wrong. Its a balance between having patience to wait for the haul or to know when to cut your losses.

I agree with your Chelsea comments. I have had Alonso all season and unless they bring somebody in for him in the transfer window, he is staying with me until the end. I think it is a very good team but would perhaps be cautious regarding Son's game time (I will probably get rid for Pogba or Mahrez) and I do not like Hegazi because he plays for a team that is 99% going down.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think a couple of gws back I'd have considered it but they just have a couple more tough fixtures in the short term and then it's plain sailing for the most part so I may just keep them for the season (Heaton in for Pope when/if he's dropped for him). The thing with Burnley is that they are good at keeping clean sheets both home and away so not concerned about the lack of good home fixtures.

That's fair. I had a look at fixture ticker and Burnley sit about mid table for fixture difficulty. The double up worked for me in the first half of the season. Hopefully it continues to be fruitful in the second half.

Might be in dream land but I'd love it if we could get either Goretzka or Pulisic (both would be a dream) to replace Coutinho. Pulisic with the remaining members of the fab 4 would make us formidable. Throw in Keita with Goreztska in a double pivot (the dream) or more realistically N'Didi to give everyone else more freedom and we'd be flying.

I think he is fine as he is because I don't think he will ever be the striker we need. A true world class one would be a good move to play in front of him. For too long we have been a team of (very good) scoring midfielders.

With him it's not just about the goals though, he creates chances, makes runs to draw away defenders which aids Salah, he's presses like a madman and has great link up play too.

Get Pulisic and Goretzka who are still young and need time to adapt and once they do, Mane and Salah would be desperate to win something and they will leave. Repeat.
Liverpool needs a make-a-statement signing or they will be just like spurs.

if pools watched last nights game. Mane is not happy. seems like he is not happy because he lost "the main man" tag in the team to salah. p.s he got a hammy that failed twice already this season. relations not looking good when the season is done.

mane is a fantastic player for FPL. but he is playing on a half assed mood. if cout goes. i think he would wanna go too, and klopp will be tasked on another rebuilding work. 2 more seasons and klopp leaves and returns to BvB. - thats the story imo

OK, used my WC (yes that makes me a filthy casual), but my bench was messed up and I was struggling to field 4 defenders.

I've gone the other way now and loaded up on defence while weakening my attackers and hope I get points from midfield.

    Currently sitting on:

    Pope
    Ota, Azpi, Alonso, Christensen
    Sterling, Pogba, Salah, Alli
    Kane DCL

    Pereira, Ogbonna, RLC, Crouch

with £0.2m in the bank. With the above I can swap out midfielders on performance. I know I've tripled Chelsea defence, but can swap Christensen for Jones or someone if needed. I had a long run of Hazard and Morata doing nothing and just got fed up with holding them at their prices, so thinking of running with Kane only for a while. Pope is an upgrade to the Foster/Speroni combination I had.

Damn I remember last season mid way through the 2nd half of the season I went triple Chelsea and they kept looking their cleanies.
It was so annoying as they'd kept shed loads before.
I'd prefer to spread out the defenders teams a bit more.

I'm chasing big time in my mini league too.
2nd part of the season is all about damage limitations and saving a bit of face.
It's been a bit embarrassing, as I usually hover around the top of my ML.

Don't despair, you'd be surprised how much rank you can climb using your chips correctly I the later stages of the season.

      1. Take hits and get your team sorted,
      2. try getting the same players as him, your team is a big differential itself.
      3. Captain the leader of the captain poll.
      4. Major DGW would come inevitably a week before wc, ramp up 15 players with DGW and bench boost. That would be probably GW 33-34.

If I'm leading and people are getting same players as me I'm winning. You have to research and get the differentials in

          • 10 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

Or damage limitation, you keep him at arm's length, ofc it's impossible to copy his team bit by bit as you never know his move until the week starts. Still 16 weeks left with couple of DGWs, so he don't need a massive boost one week and then he loses all the ground he made in the one after, he only needs to average 7-10 points advantage each week and he'll catch.

I think its a case of matching his biggest scorers with those same players while adding 2 or 3 that will or should at least outscore his.

It's weird, in my ml I'm usually somewhere in the top, even covering my chasers by blocking their best moves.
Chasing big time is a whole new ball game.

        1. thes7s
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

I agree, chasing needs calculated risk, just get players that he'll definitely have and throw 2-3 solid differentials a mix of form and fixtures add to that solid captain choice and you'll get him.

            That's the theory.
Plus we can factor in that most managers with a good lead tend to relax.

I'm not giving up yet even though I'm like chasing 140 points. ML pays returns for up to 3rd place.
