Scout Notes

Scout Notes – United and Sanchez in Cup Stroll

Manchester United eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup as Alexis Sanchez’s debut mostly followed the script.

After losing to Bristol City in the EFL Cup earlier this month, Jose Mourinho’s side avoided a second cup shock of the season in the west country with a professional 4-0 win at Yeovil Town.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera either side of the break essentially killed off the tie, before Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku struck late as the League Two outfit tired.

But the centre of attention on the night was debutant Sanchez.

Demanding a hefty 11.7 fee in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sanchez was heavily involved in Rashford’s opener and then set up Herrera’s goal in a busy, if rather rusty, display during which he fired off two attempts (one on target) and produced six key passes.

The other assists on the night came from Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo.

Speaking post-match, Mourinho lauded his new man’s ‘maturity and class’ and also talked of the main issue surrounding him.

“The question is always which one is going to be out? Where is he going to play? It’s not about that for us.”

It might not have been for the coach, but it was for the rest of us, and the answer was: wide on the left.

Sanchez started as part of an attacking three, with Juan Mata on the other flank and Rashford down the middle, and while there was an element of positional rotation among the trio, with Mata drifting inside from time to time, Sanchez stuck to his starting position almost exclusively.

Too much can be read into one cup tie against lower league opposition, however.

Mourinho fielded a strong side, but that was more a reflection of the depth of his squad as the team contained just one player – Mata – who had started last weekend’s win at Burnley.

Two others, Lukakau and Lingard, came on as subs, the latter for Sanchez after 72 minutes.

That meant we were denied an early insight into how the pair might operate together, although the 18.2% of managers who own Lingard will have been heartened by his goal after their man had blanked three times over the past four Gameweeks.

That strike provided reassurance on the midfielder’s form to perhaps slow the tide of sales which have seen Lingard installed as the second most sold player ahead of Gameweek 25. It also offered Mourinho a timely reminder of his goal-getting talents ahead of his next teamsheet.

Meanwhile, another player whose minutes will potentially be threatened by Sanchez’s arrival, Anthony Martial, was omitted from the squad.

A much clearer indication of Sanchez’s role, and how it will have an impact on his new team-mates, will arrive in Wednesday’s Gameweek 25 trip to Spurs.

Not that this has stopped some 45,000+ FPL managers finding the funds to bring the Chilean into their squads already.

That’s a big boost for a player who was only owned by 146,000 for Gameweek 24, and he’s currently just outside the top ten transfers-in for the midweek round of fixtures.

Based on last night’s evidence, he’s a few matches away from his standard speed and sharpness.

Sanchez was frequently wasteful in possession, giving the ball away 31 times, and lacked a genuine goal threat – he failed to have a single touch in Yeovil’s penalty area.

Those figures will need to improve, and they surely will as he beds in at Old Trafford, but until they do, Sanchez’s premium price tag will dissuade most of us from attempting the budget-bending moves to bring him into our sides.

On the plus side, he took United’s corners and had one direct free-kick attempt saved last night. If he continues to play a significant set-piece role, it will only boost his points potential.

United’s win means they’ll be involved in the FA Cup fifth round, which takes place across the weekend of February 17.

They’ll face an away match with Newcastle in the league beforehand and a trip to Sevilla in the Champions League followed by a Gameweek 28 visit from Chelsea afterwards.

The importance of the latter fixtures suggests Mourinho will again be making major changes to his FA Cup team, with Sanchez probably unlikely to start in that competition again any time soon.

Nope, I have admittedly put the (c) on Alonso this season but captaining a defender isn't really the way to go, forwards and mids are generally more likely to get that 10+ point tally in a GW.

    DDG Elliot
Alonso Mustafi Daniels Ogbonna Danilo(really hoped he's in front of Zinchenko in rotation.. )
    Salah Pogba Mahrez Alli Lanzini
    Kane Wilson Niasse

Want to transfer out Alli and Lanzini for a hit, which one would you choose??
    a) Mane + Shaqiri/Allen
    b) Hazard + Allen
    c) Sterling/Sane + Mkhitarian
    d) none of these

If c), then I would lose funds to upgrade Mustafi Danilo and Daniels to VVD, Christensen and Burnley in a few GWs

Most likely Mahrez, maaaybe Pogba, depending on haul from gw25.

I think Allen can be a valuable asset for home games against weaker sides, because I believe he is going to play AMC and he gets points from that position.
But when they're away, or at home against top sides, he is probably going to play DMC/MC, so - no returns.. For those he's going to be on the bench.

captain choice is based on current team, if I get Hazard in, he is going to be a top choice, depending on return in gw25.

I am thinking of getting Allen in, but it all depends on your current team, are your bench players starters for their teams?

if yes, then get Allen, play him when Stoke has a home game against bottom half team, because I they're gonna chase wins there, and when they are hoping to save a point, he's probably gonna be more defense oriented.

if your bench players don't play in their teams, don't expect more than 2 points from Allen in those games

Strongly considering it for a FT... might also be worth a hit.

Kane might go 2-2-2 next three GW's.... whereas Kun should go 13-13-13

You don’t think Kane will score in the next 3? I’ll bet big money he scores in at least 1 of them games

Listening to the scoutcast & I think they summed it up well by saying that Kane could easily score 2 goals in the next 3 games... but Kun could score 5. I'm coming round to the idea that the stars have aligned for Kun to outscore Kane by about 30 points over the next 3 weeks... which would do wonders for my OR...

Kun will get injured or blank now lol

Lol. I can see where your coming from but I don’t think the fixtures are ‘bad’ for Kane. Utd concede a lot of chances and have been lucky to keep clean sheets lately. Liverpool are poor at the back, granted they keep cleanies at home but I can’t see them keeping us out and as for Arsenal, it’s a huge derby and Kane loves a London derby just look at his record. Btw I own both Kane and Kun

So let me get this straight. Spurs can't score against low teams that park the bus? And Spurs can't score against top teams that commit players forward? So basically Spurs and Harry Kane can't score goals? That's weird.

He also lost possession a lot attempting ridiculous passes that failed 2/3 times. Fair enough if thats expected and Mourinho want him to try because someone has to create. But it was not a MotM performance.

Man, he kept trying that switch pass every time when he could easily have passed it down the line..... He loves to play that Hollywood ball even though how passing is bad. Plus he struggled against that Yeovil right back......

The team looked better after he left coz the first team forwards were on. He was playing with long term absentees and makeshift 2nd string united offense and he still did decent.
He will do better will do better with pogba, martial, lingard, Lukaku.

Mata, Shaw were the most passed to, both regular starters.... Plus they were playing a 4-3-3, more in favour of attacking... But still it's Yeovil

I thought he looked great in the first half, he's definitely brought something to that Utd attack they haven't had since Tevez/cr7 left. I can see Utd literally putting 5 or 6 past Huddersfield with Pogba Kaku Sanchez gong mental

Haha, in fairness he did lose the ball a lot but that's all. His energy and work-rate will rub off on the squad! Plus he's in a different class to many of the other United forwards when it comes to decision making and final ball.
