Metrics – The Impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit

With the dust now settled, we can now look back and assess the effectiveness of the Fantasy Premier League Free Hit chip in Gameweek 31.

When it came to the reduced four-fixture schedule, many managers chose to plan and use transfers leading up to Saturday, fielding a nearly full squad without the use of the Free Hit.

Others thought it the perfect time to employ the chip, while a third group decided to ignore both solutions and just relied on the small number of players they could muster ahead of yesterday’s deadline.

We won’t be able to weigh up the full merits of these strategies until the season is over and, in particular, the Gameweek 35 Free Hits are played. However, we can compare the intermediate gains from the different approaches employed.

So, let’s present some of these results by trying to answer a list of questions.

Q1: How many extra points and ranks did a Free Hit team gain over non-Free Hitters in Gameweek 31?

SampleFH average pointsNo FH average pointsAverage FH points gainAverage FH rank jumpAverage no FH rank drop
Top 1k102.7682.8419.92434.17-157.15
Top 10k100.6181.0419.562729.12-1300.81
Top 100k100.0477.6522.3815948.45-12779.96

Looking at the table above, we can see that Free Hit teams scored, on average, around 20-22 more points than non-Free Hit sides, which appears to be a very decent gain.

Also, teams in the top 100,000 using Free Hit in in Gameweek 31 jumped up around 16,000 places, while those that didn’t suffered an average drop of 12.8k.

However, we know that many teams entered the Gameweek with a small number of players as they’d not planned for the reduced schedule, which caused Free Hitters to make up more ground.

But those managers who did plan leading up to Gameweek 31, suffered less damage to their rank, as indicated by the results in the table.

For example, I was able to field a full 11 players with no Free Hit chip played and achieved a score of 103 (-4) = 99. That was pretty much the same as the average Free Hit team (100.6 in the top 10k).

Am I a good representative for Gameweek 31 planners, or just an anomaly?

That leads me to the second question.

Q2: How many extra points did a Free Hit team gain over non Free Hitters who planned for Gameweek 31?

I took having eight or more players this week as an indicator of a manager planning for the blanks.

The chart below shows the average points gained by teams with eight or more players vs the Free Hit average (now focusing on the top 10k).

It is clear that a Free Hit team still gained around 18-20 points more than the managers who planned for Saturday’s matches.

Even those with 11 players couldn’t match the Free Hit average, mainly due to them fielding non-starters (Moritz Bauer, Oumar Niasse etc) or by taking late transfer hits to acquire nailed-on players.

So my team does look like an outlier, as Free Hitters still gained over planners.

However, that might not be the full picture…

There is a theory that players who planned for Gameweek 31 lost ground over recent Gameweeks as they were unable, or unwilling, to bring in the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Henrikh Mkhtaryan, Son Heung-min ahead of “mediocrity” from Stoke City and Everton.

Time, therefore, to test this theory and see if Free Hitters gained even more than the 20 point gap already discussed.

Q3: Did planning for Gameweek 31 cause more losses over the previous couple of Gameweeks?

To answer this question, I looked back at the past three Gameweeks (28-30) and calculated the points gained in that period for both the managers who activated their Free Hit in Gameweek 31, and those who didn’t.

As suggested by the figure, there is not that significant a statistical difference between “planners” and “Free Hitters”.

The advantage that Free Hitters might have gained is just an extra three points on average over the three Gameweeks.

Therefore, I am more inclined to say that planning for Gameweek 31 didn’t really hurt the average manager.

They might have missed some individual hauls from the likes of Son and Mahrez, but it appears that managers who used the chip and who were not distracted by Gameweek 31 signings also missed out on the bulk of these points.

The last couple of Gameweeks seemed rough, but the statistics suggest that they were rough on the majority of managers.

Q4: How much did a Free Hit team gain over the user’s original set-up?

I went back to all managers in the top 10k who used Free Hit this week and calculated how many points their original teams would have brought in.

I employed two assumptions – that they captained Salah and they would have used their Free Hit to get extra players.

It turns out the average score they would have managed was 80.53 points, so using the Free Hit chip led to a jump to 100.6 points – a gain of 20 (again) over their previous line-ups.

In summary, Fre Hitters gained around 20 points this week over the non-Free Hitters, over Gameweek 31 long-term planners and over their own original teams.

Numbers suggest that planning for Gameweek 31 cost three or so more points, making the net gain for Free Hit users around 23 points.

Finally, I’ll leave you with some statistics about the usage of chips in the new top 10k post-Gameweek 31 and about the point differences between ranks.

RankPointsDifference from above rank
120740
100199183
1k194150
5k190338
10k188419
20k186321
50k183231
100k180428
500k171787
1M165859

As you can see in the table, most ranks are not separated by a huge chasm of points.

For instance, the difference between 20k and 5k is currently just 40 points.

Also, among the current top 10k managers, over 69% have now used their Free Hit, while 47% have spent their second Wildcard.

That suggests that the remaining seven Gameweeks will see a big shift in rank as the effects of the double Gameweeks and the chips still to be employed shake things up once again.

Excellent article - thank you. Was trying to guage this info earlier today.

For me getting a green arrow in top 10k this week with no FH used feels like a big plus, especially given gw35 schedule now.

The big question is whether this week gave a bigger advantage than using fh in gw35. Time will tell.

My mind has gone completely blank! I should know this been playing the game long enough. Wildcarding, does the free transfer roll over, or are you left with 1 in GW33?

To those of you who are still yet to wildcard because they think it's better to wildcard in GW33, here are my thoughts.
I am still in a position with all chips remaining, bare that in mind when reading this.

My initial plan was to wildcard in GW33, however, I've now changed my mind, going to wildcard now. A few reasons for this:

1.) The main reason really is to get ahead of everyone else who are not using their wild card and gain a profit on imminent price rises
2.) The players you have now after the BGW will most likely fall in price because so many are deciding to wildcard, therefore you'll likely lose a small amount
    3. Now is a good opportunity to bring in players for the DGW in 34
    4. If you use the wildcard now, it'll allow you to potentially roll over 2 FT to use in GW34 which is a DGW

Hopefully, all of that makes sense 🙂

I too was able to break 100 without chip, just by planning and fielded 10.
However one thing needs to be taken into account and is difficult to quantify. Ie how much did planners suffer in the last few weeks having to hold the likes of wilson and walcott? Those using chip would not have had to suffer that

I played my free hit a couple of months ago and gained around 25 points from it, the jury is still out but it looks like this is one chip where you shouod not be afraid to use it when you need it rather than just using it when everyone else does

I was having a few pinrs with Ossie Ardiles last night and we got talking about his conpatriot Poch and about Harry Kane. Turns out Harry is grand he's just resting him for the international break. Poch is a divil 😉

    Free hit in 37?

    Just some thoughts.

If I still had my FH I'd be using it in 37 I think. 35 looks easily navigable for the general masses. Barring Spurs (without Kane), Chelsea not too heavily owned, DDG and Leicester (Mahrez/Vardy) is there anyone really exciting not playing. Just don't see gains being as great.

    * Chelsea - h) Liverpool, h) Huddersfield
    * Leicester - h) West Ham, h) So'ton
    * United - a) Brighton, a) Bournemouth
    * Spurs - a) West Brom, a) Brighton
Far more upside there. Fixtures look great and teams involved should still be competitive.

Team you could create be about 86m with right chumps on bench - unlike those in 31!
    De Gea
    Valencia
    Vertonghen
    Alonso
    Maguire
    Mahrez
    Son
    Willian
    Martial
    Kane
    Vardy.

Four bench fodder cheap as possible. This screwed 31 so badly because money was wasted - same case will apply in 35. You won't make the most of your capital.

Note I've not double checked actual prices. Rough guide. But I can create that team with my squad value of 103m easily.

TC then either Salah 35 or 36 v West Brom or Stoke.

I like this idea more than mine below! Helps you maximise WC too if you don't have the TC chip.

Yeah thinking a bit more about it though - you could get those players in for 34 also DDG, Son, Mahrez etc. Free hit them out for 35 and then they are back. United, Chelsea, Leicester and Spurs game in 36 isn't terrible.

The other thing about free hit in 35 is Arsenal and City are prob the best options. But picking their sides will be tough with rotation possible. Imagine getting in say Mkhi and Sane in your free hit both rested - quite possible.

If you free hit, you have strong bench too for that week.

I think the use of FH for BGW instead of DGW might be overvalued.

For those of us who have used just the TC chip, here's an alternative plan worth considering?

GW32-35: Use FTs to build a squad for the BGW. Shouldn't need much since you'll have leftovers from 31.

GW34: Free Hit for a strong DGW 11.

GW35: No chip use, should be able to put out 8-9 without hits.

GW36: WC. For MLs, you have the latest info to setup your team to lead/chase and maximise league team information.

    GW37: Bench Boost.

    What do you think?

The issue is the Bench Boost in a very late GW when predicting line-ups could be very difficult or certainly more difficult that GW34.

In GW34, we still have budget fodder in relegation threatened teams to choose from. In 37, those teams could be safe or down without any motivation.

Same for the top four - it could all be settled.

        Good point, hadn't considered that.

I do expect Chelsea, Spurs, Utd, Swansea etc to be in the thick of it though. Leicester and Arsenal already have nothing to play for, so lineups risk might be similar in 34/37.

You also have to factor in players avoiding injuries before the WC maybe?

In my own admittedly very limited experience of doing the BB in the 1st DGW, TC in the second one season, and vice-versa the following season, it didn't make a scrap of difference. In fact in my 37 years (seems like it) of Fantasy Football I doubt there's ever been a reasonably large DGW that I haven't had at least two random restings (occasionally more) - and that doesn't matter whether it was a GW in the early 30s or the late ones. You just have to hope for the best.

If I recall correctly, that may be because the TC chip performed similarly in 34&37 within each season?

I just think a WC so late in the season is a bit of a waste. You barely get any benefit played in 36, whereas played now you get a lot more potential residual buck for your buck.

        For OR, I'd agree.

For mini leagues and H2H leagues, different things to play for, and different value for the WC possibly.

It'd be interesting to see the longevity of the late season wildcard. Are those who played it in GW20 still seeing the benefit of it, or have they quit a long time ago?

GW37 BB is a great idea because you can actually get decent players on the bench without smashing you team to bits for the fixtures thereafter with just one game left.

If you WC in 32 you are either going to have a weak bench (as seen in all the WC drafts) or carry lots of £££ on your bench right through to 36 (assuming FH in 35).

There are always pros and cons 🙂

Do you guys reckon Arsenal would put out a good team most weeks, with top 4 virtually out of reach and Europa League of prime importance? Wondering whether to get Mkhi or even if Aubemeyang would have decent enough service to deliver

I think we will be fine for the quarter finals but when we get to the Semi's, there will be a lot of rotation in the league around that time. Everyone apart from Cech and Aubameyang wont be nailed on.

Cause he is. Lacazette will play either alongside him or will play the Europa league games as Aubameyang cant play in that.
