Pre-Season

FPL midfielders deployed in defence while Liverpool score seven

Two Fantasy Premier League midfielders were deployed as defenders in their respective clubs’ first pre-season matches.

Those hoping to sign either Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) or Artur Masuaku (£4.5m) will be disappointed to see their how managers look set to use them this season, although of course it’s early days just yet.

Elsewhere, there was some experimentation at Southampton and Liverpool ran wild at Chrester, while some of the bargain bucket options at Fulham found the net against Crawley.

FULHAM 4-2 CRAWLEY TOWN

Despite being classified as a midfielder in FPL, Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) was deployed as a left-back as Fulham beat Crawley 4-2 in their first pre-season fixture.

The 18-year-old was not involved in any of the goals but did threaten with his crosses into the box.

Crawley took the lead through Ollie Palmer in the ninth minute but Mattias Kait soon equalised after latching onto an insightful Stefan Johansen (£5.5m) pass.

After a complete rotation of all 11 players at half-time Floyd Ayite (£4.5m), playing on the flanks of a 4-3-3, scored a 25-yard free-kick.

A Tom Cairney (£5.0m) corner was then headed in by Marcelo Djalo before Rui Fonte (£4.5m) played in Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m), also playing as a wide-forward, to make it 4-1.

Thomas Verheydt lobbed Taye Ashby-Hammond shortly after as Crawley pressed late on.

FULHAM FIRST-HALF XI (4-3-3): Rodak; R Sessegnon, Jenz, Odoi, Christie; Johansen, O’Riley, de la Torre; Thorsteinsson, Kait, Kamara.

FULHAM SECOND-HALF XI (4-3-3): Ashby-Hammond; S Sessegnon, Ream, Djalo, Fossey; Francois, Cisse, Cairney; Kebano, Fonte, Ayite.

FC Winterthur 3-2 West Ham United

Artur Masuaku (£4.5m) played at left-back as Andy Carroll (£5.5m) missed a penalty in West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to FC Winterthur on Sunday.

Masuaku has been reclassified as a midfielder in FPL this season after he spent some time operating as a left-winger in 2017/18. However, 45 minutes spent back in defence before being replaced at half-time by Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m) in Switzerland will likely curtail any interest in the player, in spite of his low price.

Leading the line for the first of two XIs that were entirely swapped at the interval, Carroll did find the net in the match, though. Edimilison Fernandes (£4.5m) played a ball across the six-yard box in the 33rd minute for the striker to slot home on the line and equalise.

The Hammers had fell behind in the 25th minute when Calla stole a yard on Masuaku in the box and headed past Adrian.

The hosts regained the lead in the 39th minute when a ball over the defence was slotted into the net by Manuel Sutter.

It was right-back Pablo Zabaleta (£4.5m) who won the penalty in the 43rd minute before Carroll’s effort was saved.

Winterthur extended their lead to 3-1 in the second-half when Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) undercooked his cushioned header back to goalkeeper Nathan Trott, which was pounced upon by Gele.

Forward Jordan Hugill (£5.0m) was fouled in the box with five minutes to go and this time Mark Noble (£5.0m) dispatched the penalty.

Although part of the training group in Switzerland, Michail Antonio (£7.0m) and Winston Reid (£4.5m) missed out on the match as they continue rehabilitation from hamstring and knee injuries respectively, while Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) was unavailable too, having suffered a minor groin injury.

WEST HAM FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Adrian; Masuaku, Rice, Oxford, Zabaleta; Coventry, Obiang; Holland, Fernandes, Haksabanovic; Carroll.

WEST HAM SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Trott; Fredericks, Diop, Ogbonna, Byram; Noble, Cullen; Snodgrass, Browne, Samuelsen; Hugill.

FC Schalke 04 3-3 Southampton

Southampton experimented with three at the back as they drew 3-3 with Schalke in China on Thursday.

Yevhen Konoplyanka put Schalke ahead in the 21st minute as his deflected shot looped over goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (£4.5m).

Good hold-up play from Charlie Austin (£6.0m) on the stroke of half-time got Southampton back into the game. He received the ball on the edge of the box and found Nathan Redmond’s (£5.5m) advancing run beyond him, who slotted home to equalise.

The Saints took the lead just after half-time when a brilliant sweeping cross-field ball from Jordy Clasie was collected by Harrison Reed (neither player in FPL yet) on the right-flank. He shrugged of the attention of a defender and poked under the goalkeeper for 2-1.

Suat Serdar equalised for Schalke shortly after, a powerful strike from range just out of Fraser Forster’s (£4.5m) reach.

Reed turned the provider for Southampton’s third, his short pass in the box teed up Jake Hesketh’s curling shot from just outside the area, deflected into the net by Benjamin Stambouli.

Schalke struck late to salvage a draw as Forster was beaten from range again, this time by Steven Skrzybski.

SOUTHAMPTON FIRST-HALF XI (3-5-2): McCarthy, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Targett, Armstrong, Lemina, Hojberg, Long; Redmond, Austin.

SOUTHAMPTON SECOND-HALF XI (3-5-2): Forster; McQueen, Valery, Romeu; Sims, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Hesketh, Reed; Gabbiadini, Gallagher.

CHESTER 0-7 LIVERPOOL

Fabinho (£6.0m) and Naby Keita (£7.5m) were involved as Liverpool started their pre-season campaign with a routine 7-0 win over Chester.

The new pair did not play together though, each one used in differing line-ups used in the first and second halves.

Harry Wilson scored twice, in the 40th and 47th minute to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead at half-time, Alberto Moreno (£4.5m) and Curtis Jones getting the assists.

After the complete rotation of the starting XI, James Milner (£5.5m) scored a second-half penalty and Daniel Sturridge (not yet in FPL) slotted home after Naby Keita (£7.5m) put pressure on the Chester defence.

Ryan Kent smashed in a fifth from the left-flank before Milner’s flick in the box was driven into the bottom corner by Danny Ings (£5.5m). Sturridge rounded off the route by bending in an effort from the edge of the box.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Karius; Moreno, Phillips, Gomez, Clyne; Jones, Fabinho; Wilson, Solanke, Woodburn; Origi.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI: Ward; Robertson, Klavan, Phillips (Chirivella), Camacho, Milner, Keita, Kent, Ojo, Ings, Sturridge.

Not necessarily. He really does look promising and 6.5 could seem cheap by Christmas. But he's definitely overpriced for an unproven asset.

21 appearances as a left wing
7 as a left sided attacking mid
1 as a defensive left mid

20 appearances as a left back

I think they’ve got that spot on.

At 6.5 for a midfielder in a defensive position for a newly promoted team? He's the same price as Jota in Wolves!

    First RMT of the season:

    Ederson / 4.0

    Alonso // Coleman // Daniels // Cedric // Peltier

    Salah // Sané // Walcott // Jota // Hughes

    Aubameyang // Firmino // Quaner

3-5-2 served me well last season so will probably stick to that early doors. All thoughts appreciated as always.

I'd have Aguero over Auba for at least the first 2 weeks.

I haven't seen any teams ignoring the premium strikers but I really can't see the value in them early on. Firmino is probably worth it but I would rather have Man City's most nailed player KDB for £0.5m more. Some of the cheaper strikers have good early fixtures so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that they get a goal every couple of games.

    Ederson
Alonso, Roberts, (Cedric/Daniels/Tomkins 3 way rotation)
    Salah, KDB, Silva, Sigurdsson, (Cairney)
    Tosun, Zaha, Wilson

I’m coming around to Morata more & more if Chelsea don’t sign a striker. You can’t go wrong for 9.0 & if he’s dropped swap straight to Le Donk for even cheaper.

A Salah team is so much better overall without Kun so needs must

If he starts week in week out then I agree that he will be great value. It would also tempt me to start with Azpi instead of Alonso as Azpi and Morata kept linking up to score what looked like the same goal last season.

If they stay fit I would expect them each to score about 10-13 goals in the season. The point is they have good fixtures to start and enable me to invest in other areas. If they average 4 ppg then they will be doing their jobs. Salah will be captain every week so that devalues the £10m+ forwards.

That Sigurdsson/Tosun combo could be interesting. I'll be watching how they get on pre-season.

I'm thinking along the same lines as you. I'll have Salah & KDB and assuming Salah will be my captain every week I can't see the point in having anyone else who's over £10m - they may get plenty of goals but ultimately they're not great value for money.

Yes, nice easy fixtures at the start. With Rooney gone I think Sigurdsson can take control and start playing like he did at Swansea. As always the way to get a decent score is picking out the highest scoring premium players and then finding the best value players with whatever is left of the budget.

Btw, anyone looking at Bonatelli (5.0) as a bench striker in a 352? The loanee was outstanding in the first of the season, before a 5 month barren spell. But they've signed him permanently now, so they must rate him.

I've been having a look at him. For 5.0, i dont expect him to light the PL on fire. Could be useful off the bench.
I posted about him once here a few days ago. After a little bit of digging, it seems that Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota could be challenging for that CF spot. Again, this is just simple minded googling and whoscored research.

I will never get why Masuaku has been classified as a midfielder. He didn't even spend that much time as a wing-back, and when he did - he was just a wing-back! Same as Alonso, Moses, Davies, Trippier, and you don't see them popping up as midfielders in FPL all of a sudden.

Putting some more thought into GW1 planning & thinking through the RMT permutations!

There are so many 6.5-7.5 potential gold mine midfielders I think it definitely makes sense to plan at least one slot in midfield around them. Surely someone from the pool of Mikhi, Ramsey, Martial, Lingard, Theo, Milivojevic will become an early bandwagon, if not two or three of them.

Same with 6.0 - 7.0 strikers: you would think at least one if not more of Austin, King, Zaha, Arnie, Tosun will start well and bandwagon so definitely want a 7.0 striker slot.

In defence, there are so many quality value 4.5 options this year I think it makes sense to have at least two of them, to allow jumping on whichever one or two start doing well.

Adding in premium players Salah, Alonso, KDB, Firmino, VVD (or Robertson if you think he won’t get rotated) who I find are too risky to go without, and are pretty well priced with good fixtures.

Goalkeepers again have a lot of value at 4.5 so not make sure it makes sense to spend any more for the sake of 15-20 extra points over the season.

Bench wise, better to go with very low value players to pad out the blanks in he squad, and keep the budget ITB to jump on whatever players start well in GW1/2 and very quickly the perfect RMT will take shape:

    Fabianski
    Alonso, VVD, Cedric, Daniels
    Salah, KDB, Martial*
    Firmino, Morata**, Austin***
(Hamer, AWB, Stephens, Masuaku) +2.0 ITB

Purposely rubbish bench - will see after GW1 if any cheapie options start catching the eye, money ITB to allow upgrades!

*Martial - We hopefully will have teamsheets for Utd Leicester, if Martial is benched, go with Lingard. If neither do well, you can swap to any of the other 7.0-ish optionsfor GW2 if you wish - likely Mkhi or Ramsey, maybe Theo, Siggy or Mili etc
**Morata - again can be swapped to a Vardy or a Giroud if things don’t pan out. If Chelsea sign a striker, hopefully he is Also 9.0 or less
***Austin - money ITB will allow upgrade to King, Zaha, Arnie Tosun if things don’t go well.

This team is exposed to a Kun hattrick, but let’s be honest, is anyone really going to captain him anyway with Salah? If he does go mental - 2.0 is ITB to punt Morata out & get Kun in.

    Simples!

The main turn-down with Chelsea assets though is that the team is a mess right now.

They're dealing with a managerial issue, a striker issue, a CB issue. Also, Kante, Hazard and Willian have been linked to a move out.

Very much agree with the idea of having price slots in your team to switch out for form player. Something I've not always done well in the past which has lead to hits to get in the players I want. Not keen on all your player selections with martial and morata but seems a very good strategy to keep a yogic line up to start the season!

I admire your optimism on the value of some players. Personally I think there aren't any standout bargains apart from one or two. They all have massive question marks over them which is why they are cheap or appear to be cheap.

First stab here, open to changes as I have 2m itb. I feel its best to keep it there as opposed to do Tomkins to PVA or other premium defenders and its best served with flexability to jump on players who perform well early.

    Fab Leno
    Alonso Robertson Cedric Dunk Tomkins
    Jota Cairny Sane Miki Mane
    Tosun Zaha Aguero

I think that if you don't go with Salah you should spend more either in midfield or up front. Upgrade Zaha to Firmino and downgrade Dunk to 4.0m def Peltier

Cheers- risk takers are progress makers right? Out of interest, why those 3 in particular? All seem to be nailed, and for their price, seemed to me to be decent enough picks.

Let's say they fail. Who would be your Cairney replacement? What if Zaha plays LW?. The pool of alternatives are very risky imo so I'd look to cut those types to one, maximum 2 risks in your starting team. Otherwise you're looking at reshaping the team and shifting funds early doors. Setting yourself up for a likely problem imo.
I'm not saying those players won't do well but they are priced for a reason. 2 cheapish fwds for instance is too optimistic.
Use that 2m, it's there for a reason and you need it. 🙂
Just my take on it is all. Each to their own ideas though, of course.

I tried a team with premium defenders as they could be great value, thoughts on that?

    Ryan (Fab)
    Alonso Mendy Robertson Cedric (Tomkins)
    Salah Dilva Mkhi Jota (Masuaku)
    Aguero Tosun (Austin)

Also give a good choice between Austin - Jota and Cedric/Tomkins for 2 spots...

Looks great. The biggest problem with too many value players in top tier defenders is that its hard to get good captain options. But you have Salah for nailed C so its fine.

Otamendi + Stones + Kompany + Laportet all brilliant centre backs, and no obvious indication of who will play regularly. Laporte may start, but not worth the risk. Get Ederson
