How Foster and Watford can form part of defensive rotation in 2018/19

Ben Foster could help Watford form part of an effective defensive rotation this season after his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The data would suggest he stands to bring improvements to the Hornets’ back-line, compared to previous number one Heurelho Gomes.

We’ve run the rule over Foster to see what his Fantasy Premier League prospects are this season.

THE HISTORY

Ben Foster finally called time on a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion this summer after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League. Having proved a fashionable asset for Fantasy football in recent years, his popularity was damaged last season by the struggles of his club, who finished bottom of the league.

However, the 123 FPL points Foster amassed in 2017/18 turned out to be the third-best score of his career. In fact, the ten clean sheets he helped keep was his second highest tally in the Premier League; only in 2014/15 did he register more shut-outs. The 101 saves he registered was also in keeping with expectations.

The main blot statistically on his final season with West Brom was the fact that he ranked bottom of the division for expected goals prevented, with -8.80.

Foster’s FPL pedigree goes back a long way, though. He first made a name for himself by making 178 saves and recording 153 Fantasy points in 2010/11 with Birmingham City.

Since then he has made over 100 saves in five of the last eight campaigns and was only below that number between 2013/14 and 2016/17 as he struggled with injury and team selection.

PROSPECTS

Foster certainly has what it takes to better Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) in the Watford net and help the Hornets be a source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

There is a decent foundation in place already at Vicarage Road as manager Javi Gracia targeted defence as an area in need of improvement after he took over from Marco Silva in January.

In the first 24 Gameweeks of 2017/18 Watford ranked 18th in the division for clean sheets and only Stoke City (50) had conceded more goals than them (44).

Between Gracia’s first match in Gameweek 25 and the end of the campaign the Hornets were ninth-best for clean sheets and 12th for goals conceded. In fact, only Man City (75) and Liverpool (97) allowed fewer shots on goal than Watford (130) over that same period.

They also ranked fifth-best for shots on target allowed (49) and seventh for big chances conceded (27).

If Watford begin 2018/19 in similar form then Foster is likely to perform better than Gomes.

The Brazilian only played one match under Gracia because of injury, but loanee Orestis Karnezis is no longer at the club and therefore unavailable for comparison.

Gomes’ spell in the team was under Silva, when Watford weren’t as assured at the back. Crucially, despite facing more shots on target per game last season, he still made fewer saves than Foster did per match.

The former West Brom man also out-performed Gomes for goals conceded per game as well as clean sheets too.

With that in mind, the hope is that Watford may be the source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

The Hornets do have some tricky fixtures early on, with Tottenham and Manchester United among their first six matches.

However, Foster could be rotated with fellow £4.5m goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to give managers this run over the first six Gameweeks: Brighton (H), Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (H), Wolves (H), Everton (A), Fulham (A).

      I like a) best.

Son not an option in b) as he is away playing an asian games at the minute and may be for somr time

I dont like c) because sanchez because he costs a lot of money and plays in a defence minded team.

The other thing that I dont like throughout your setups is the pairing of milo and zaha together. One or the other for me.

      Good luck

Thanks for the feedback mate. Ive been pulling my hair out over Zaha and Mili haha. Mili is that annoying get who just pops up with 8-10pointers out of nowhere lol. Zaha we all know can cause havoc for defences. Pens for Mili is very tempting.

Im also a Utd fan so easily swayed by Sanchez haha

Bottomed and I feel this is an important one..

Since when did king become KING.

Correct me if I am wrong. There seems a lot of love for the above guy but if statistics (basic assist and goals scored) are correct then Wilson scored as many goals and got as many assists with less minutes on an off season.

So therefore Wilson beats King hands down. Have i missed something!! I must have cause king is mentioned a lot more than wilson

      Yes lad.

Play Cédric every week (Nice fixtures and playing WB)
Play Daniels every week (Decent fixtures and attacking threat)
Find some other lads off the street for the other two slots.

it's difficult to predict which teams will have form.

yeah, you can do it for 2 teams and have pretty good luck.

but choosing 5 teams where you play 3 each week, rest 2 each week and wanting a perfect answer from week 1... the season will be fluid, so just pick 5 and hope for the best.

I bet Xherdan Shaqiri can't believe his luck. Didn't try too hard last year, Stoke went down, he gets a move with a pay rise to Liverpool to be a squad player, enjoying the easier matches and coming on for Salah/Mane when they're already winning!

So the position that Sterling and Bernardo Silva played in last season? I'm not saying Mahrez won't do well and he could become first choice for City but people are kidding themselves if they think he's just going to walk in and nail down the spot when Pep has quality players that he has worked with in that position.

What are the key factors for everyone in the lead up to GW1? One for me is not being influenced to pick players just because they're popular on here. It's easy to see players in a lot of RMTs and fall victim to group think. I'm trying to do my research, follow the preseason games as closely as possible, and use my instinct to make my decisions. I know it sounds obvious but not all advice is good advice.

One important factor to consider in this site is, many good managers keep their teams secret and will not spoil their ideas in RMT posts.
These community completely forget some players and focus on some others, once the forgotten player scores, they will all jump on those players

      1. I Member

Absolutely. And while many managers on here have a history of great ranks a lot of us (myself included, not trying to degrade anyone) have also had average and bad ranks. The template that is forming on here could prove to be very good, or it could be rubbish.

I'm not really looking at RMT or planning to post one of my own, I will read and contribute to discussions on individuals however.

Hopefully this allows me to stay away from poor template picks... hopefully.

Going Firmino or Mane over Salah I think. 13 seems too much.
    Or?

When everyone who has him captains him and he scores a couple vs West Ham, it’ll be hard to catch up and get him in

I'm going with Salah but there's nothing wrong with this strategy. Could easily produce more points.

If I don't go Salah, I would at least double up with those two.

Since Euro 2000 these are the decent teams we have beaten in tournaments:

    Germany (Euro 2000)
    Argentina (WC 2002)

Then look at the good teams we have lost to:

    Portugal (Euro 2000)
    Brazil (WC 2002)
    France (Euro 2004)
    Portugal (Euro 2004)
    Portugal (WC 2006)
    Germany (WC 2010)
    Italy (Euro 2012)
    Italy (WC 2014)
    Uruguay (WC 2014)
    Belgium (WC 2018)
    Croatia (WC 2018)

    ------------------------------------------------------

The pattern hasn't changed - we come up against a good team and we lose. We need to come up with a way to beat teams who are better than us.

I think we are a better team than Croatia. That’s what has really pissed me off

We showed potential for game management against Sweden (who knocked out three heavyweights on the way to the quarters, don't forget).

There are few more battle hardened and hungry squads than the Croats however, especially when our pundits get carried away, e.g. Rio.

You arent. Compare the midfield and its obvious. Croatia has top playmakers from Barca and Real. Other than that the teams are pretty equal, but England had no chance in midfield, hence Hendo hoofball to Sterling all game long.

It's called experience and good management. We had the latter without the former this tournament. We will come good.

Our young players are every bit as talented as their counterparts, as seen by the growing numbers heading to the Bundesliga and other overseas leagues.

England's history has nothing to do with today's squad. Should refer to each tournament's squad separately but instead the media like us to think that there is compete continuity throughout. In reality it's more like Trigger's broom!

    Rmt please

    Foster Ederson

    Otamendi Robertson Coleman Alonso Cedric

    Sanchez Willian Walcott Gray Masuaku

    Kun Firmino Austin

Like having a expensive backline as they mostly play in midfield, think the new Chelsea manager likes Willian and hoping Sanchez plays up top at first and is back to his best, will swap kun for Auba after 2 weeks.

The more I think about the less interested I am in Coleman. Arsenal assets are the same price.. or even cheaper (!) if Emery prefers Kolasinac.

Arsenal 2/3 opening fixtures are very difficult though.

Everton Manager likes playing attacking full backs, perfect for coleman

Arsenal has a much better team and, importantly, better strikers to help the full backs realize their attacking potential.

They're cheap because Arsenal defence has been rubbish for several seasons now.

Agree that Kolasinac could be a steal if he's nailed though

But they have had Wenger for several seasons. Hes always ignored defensive coaching. With a new manager they should perform better and seem underpriced. Dont you agree that Arsenal should get more CS than Everton and that Monreal/Bellerin are at least as good attacking wise as Coleman?

I'm with you brother! I've got Coleman for Everton's opening fixtures but will be keeping a close eye on Bellerin and Monreal.

With a new manager, they MAY perform better, not should. I love that they start with hard fixtures so we can see how they do first.

Not sure if they'll get more CS than Everton. Bellerin used to be good, was trash last season. Monreal was good, yes. Would just like to wait and see though. I'm an Arsenal fan too 🙂

Coleman is perfectly priced at 5.5, so I think he's nailed in my GW1 team.

No one has any plan for getting in Harry Kane other than wildcarding here then?

Rlly, most likely he’ll get golden boot this season so having him is pretty crucial

At £12.5m and with alternative captain options like Salah & Auba, not owning him is somewhat viable(not for me though).

He was gone after 50 minutes on Wednesday. He's absolutely knackered. It will take him a long time to hit his stride in the league.

I don't have any plan in getting him in even on my wildcard. He will be in my team rarely this season because he's overpriced. 12.5m for 217 points? No thanks.
