Hat-tricks for FPL midfielders in latest pre-season friendlies

Fantasy Premier League midfielders Erik Lamela and Danny Ward both registered hat-tricks in the latest round of pre-season friendlies.

The former scored his in a behind closed doors match between Tottenham and Southend United while Cardiff’s Ward was part of the side that thrashed Cornish side Bodmin 11-1.

Elsewhere, Arsenal played a private match against Crawley with just the goalscorers known to us, while Huddersfield saw the return of captain Christopher Schindler and Oumar Niasse continued to threaten for Everton.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from another set of friendly matches.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 6-0 SOUTHEND UNITED

  • Goals: Erik Lamela x3 (£6.5m), Fernando Llorente (£6.0m), Lucas Moura (£7.0m), Tashan Oakley-Boothe
  • Assists: Moura, Serge Aurier (£6.0m), Ben Davies (£6.0m), Lamela

Mid-price midfielder Erik Lamela (£6.5m) scored a hat-trick in a behind closed doors friendly for Spurs against Southend United on Wednesday afternoon.

With Dele Alli (£9.0m) and Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) expected to miss large portions of pre-season after their involvement in the World Cup, and Son Heung-min (£8.5m) competing in the Asian games with South Korea, Lamela could easily earn an extended run in the Spurs team and prove good value.

The Argentinian midfielder opened the scoring in the seventh minute after good link-up with Lucas Moura (£7.0m). He released the winger down the right and directed the cross that came back to him into the net.

Fernando Llorente (£6.0m) doubled Spurs’ lead four minutes later after Serge Aurier’s (£6.0m) cross took a slight deflection off a defender and fell to the Spanish striker to stroke home.

Lamela profited from a good interchange between Aurier and Moura in the 27th minute, turning in from close range for 3-0. As the match was played behind closed doors, we were unable to confirm which player should be credited with the assist for this goal.

Ben Davies (£6.0m) was the next to supply an assist from wide areas, playing a one-two with Lamela, his ball into the middle converted by Moura.

Lamela completed his hat-trick before half-time after more good link-up on the right flank again. This was another goal for which the assist is unclear.

The Argentinian midfielder continued to show threat in the second-half, his 78th minute pass across goal stabbed home by youngster Tashan Oakley-Boothe.

Tottenham did not reveal the full line-up for this particular match, either on their website or social media. We do know that Michel Vorm (£5.0m) started in goal with Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) still on leave having recently won the World Cup with France.

ARSENAL 9-0 CRAWLEY TOWN

  • Goals: Lucas Perez x2, Alexandre Lacazette x2 (£9.5m), Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Pierre-Emerick Aubmameyang (£11.0m), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m), Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah
  • Assists: Unknown

Arsenal also played a pre-season match behind closed doors with the information even less clear than was the case with Spurs.

Lucas Perez (not yet on FPL) found the net twice, as did Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m), in a 9-0 win over League Two Crawley Town.

Pierre-Emerick Aubmameyang (£11.0m), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m), Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah also scored in the game.

We do not know the exact line-up, other than there being two different ones for each half, but we can confirm the following players were involved in the match in some form:

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)
  • Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m)
  • Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m)
  • Aaron Ramsey (£7.5m)
  • Bernd Leno (£5.0m)
  • Petr Cech (£5.0m)
  • Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£5.5m)
  • Matteo Guendouzi (£4.5m)
  • Lucas Perez
  • Jeff Reine-Adelaide
  • Emile Smith-Rowe
  • Jordi Osei-Tutu
  • Eddie Nketiah

DYNAMO DRESDEN 0-0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Huddersfield went a second pre-season match in a row without finding the net, although they dominated possession in Germany.

On a more positive note, captain Christopher Schindler (£4.5m) returned to action after being withdrawn with a suspected dead leg against Bury. He featured as a second-half substitute.

Forward Elias Kachunga (£5.0m) made his first start since returning from a long-term injury, deployed as the central attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 system.

Chris Lowë (£4.5m) was impressive from left-back once again, overlapping nicely with Rajiv van La Parra (£5.0m) in the first-half.

Second-half replacement Laurent Depoitre (£5.5m) had the ball in the net late-on after Alex Pritchard (£5.0m) had played him through, but it was ruled out for offside.

New signings Ramadan Sobhi (£5.0m) and Erik Durm (£4.5m) were declared in need of fitness before featuring in pre-season matches.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN XI (4-2-3-1): Hamer; Lowë (O’Brien 55’), Hefele (Schindler 45’), Kongolo (Stankovic 75’), Smith (Edmonds-Green 81’); Billing (Sabiri 45’), Hogg (Hadergjonaj 75’); Quaner (Malone 45’), Kachunga (Pritchard 45’), Van La Parra (Williams 81’); Mounié (Depoitre 75’).

BODMIN TOWN 1-11 CARDIFF CITY

  • Goals: Bobby Reid (£5.5m), Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (£5.0m), Kadeem Harris x3, Josh Murphy x2 (£5.0m), Danny Ward x3 (£4.5m), Gary Madine (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Sol Bamba (£4.5m), Joe Bennett (£4.5m), Jazz Richards (£4.0m), Mendez-Laing, Reid, Harris, Ward.

It is now four goals in two pre-season matches for Cardiff City midfielder Danny Ward (£4.5m), who netted a hat-trick against Cornish side Bodmin Town and registered an assist too, playing in advanced position.

Forward Bobby Reid (£5.5m) was deployed in midfield once again but still made it two pre-season goals in as many games since joining the Bluebirds from Bristol City, while Kadeem Harris also recorded a hat-trick and Josh Murphy (£5.0m) got a brace.

Reid opened the scoring by getting the final touch on Sol Bamba’s (£4.5m) header from a Murphy corner.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (£5.0m) netted the second following a decent overlapping run from left-back Joe Bennett (£4.5m).

Harris got his first goal from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box.

Murphy scored his first goal since joining Cardiff from Norwich a few minutes later. Bamba’s interception released right-back Jazz Richards (£4.0m) who crossed for Murphy to cut inside and find the net.

Harris got his second of the night after a cross from Mendez-Laing. He took the ball into his stride and fired a right-footed strike into the net.

In the 29th minute, Bodmin managed to get themselves a goal agains the run of play. Max Gilbert beat the offside trap following a long-ball and he was able to smuggle the ball underneath an onrushing Alex Smithies (£4.5m).

Midfielder Ward then scored quick fire brace to make it 7-1, heading home a Reid cross and then adding another two minutes later.

Harris completed his hat-trick in the second-half after he was fouled in the area again. He converted the penalty for 8-1. Minutes later, he was brought down in the box for a third time although it was Ward who took the spot-kick, completing his hat-trick too.

Murphy scored the tenth before substitute Gary Madine (£4.5m) added his third pre-season goal by heading in Ward’s cross for 11-1.

CARDIFF CITY XI (4-4-2): Smithies; Bennett (Cunningham 60’), Bamba, Connolly (Peltier 60’), Richards; Harris, Reid (Manga 60’), Damour, Mendez-Laing; D Ward, J Murphy (Madine 60’).

BURY 1-1 EVERTON

  • Goals: Oumar Niasse (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Matty Pennington

Oumar Niasse (£5.5m) scored for the second pre-season match in a row, although once again, Cenk Tosun (£7.0m) started the match ahead of him, alongside Sandro Ramirez.

Niasse could have netted more than his one goal but hit the post three-times in the second-half.

There were starts on the wings for Kevin Mirallas, scorer of five goals against ATV Irdning, and youngster Kieran Dowell.

Maarten Stekelenburg (£4.0m) was the man in goal again with Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) still on extended leave after the World Cup, while Phil Jagielka was the £4.5m centre-back who partnered Michael Keane (£5.0m).

Leighton Baines (£5.5m) was a threat down the left-flank while Keane came close to scoring from an early corner. Mirallas and Tom Davies (£5.5m) also had decent chances too with Tosun linking up attacking play.

Against the run of play, Bury took the lead just before half-time. Jagielka’s clearance only went as far as Adam Thompson, who crossed in for Neil Danns to find space and score.

It was after nine changes at the interval that Everton struck the woodwork four times in total. Niasse found the post on three occasions before finally converting Matty Pennington’s long-ball.

Cuco Martina (£4.5m) hit it again, this time with a header 13 minutes from time, before Niasse nearly found a winner, forcing a low save from the goalkeeper.

EVERTON XI (4-4-2): Stekelenburg; Baines (Robinson 45’), Keane (Pennington 45’), Jagielka (Williams 45’), Coleman (Kenny 45’); Dowell (Connolly 45’), Davies (Besic 45’), Schneiderlin (Klaassen 45’), Mirallas (Vlasic 45’); Sandro (Martina 75’), Tosun (Niasse 45’.

FENERBAHCE 3-0 FULHAM

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Fenerbahce ran out 3-0 winners over a youthful Fulham side, with more first-team players joining the match in the 65th minute.

One of those substitutes was Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) who has captured the attention of Fantasy managers already; he came on to play on the left-flank of a front-three for the second time in pre-season.

His younger brother Steven had the first chance after bombing forward from full-back but could only find the side-netting.

Brazilian midfielder Guiliano opened the scoring in the 28th minute connecting with Mauricio Isla’s cross and directing over Marek Rodak in the Fulham net.

Hassan Ali made it 2-0 just before half-time latching onto Aatif Chahechouhe’s cross.

The Turkish side scored their third after manager Slavisa Jokanovic had introduced more senior players to the match, when Ozan Tufan’s cross crept under the crossbar.

Fulham struggled to threaten the Fenerbahce goal in the second-half with shot stopper Carlos Kameni putting in a strong performance.

FULHAM XI (4-3-3): Rodak (Bettinelli 65’); S Sessegnon (Christie 65’), Jenz (Le Marchand 76’), Djalo (Odoi 65’), Fossey; de la Torre (Johansen 76’), O’Riley (Francois 76’), Cisse (Cairney 65’); Thorsteinsson (R Sessegnon 65’), Kait (Fonte 65’), Kebano (Kamara 65’).

    Is the FPL data downloadable?

Preferably not in PDF format. To include players, prices, current data (points, teams selected by %...).

Question marks over the Utd lads in GW3 onwards means strengthen your bench, planning transfers and missing out on early must haves, taking hits or wildcarding early.

Is Benjamin Mendy a good pick?

I watched some Man City games at the beginning of last season and he looked great going forward, got some good crosses in so should get some assists, and plays for a rock solid Manchester City team, so you’d expect clean sheets.

A couple of things that deter me from him though.

    1) He’s very injury prone. That’s a fact. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/benjamin-mendy/verletzungen/spieler/157495

Last year he suffered a particularly bad, almost season long cruciate ligament injury. Just before that, he was out for a month with a thigh strain, and it looks like he injured himself during the World Cup as well.

Two seasons ago, he was out for a month with a knee injury. He had three additional injuries that season – once he was only out for a week, the other two for around 2 weeks.

And in 2015/16, he had a cruciate ligament injury keeping him out for almost two weeks. Also a three week long hamstring injury.

    2) Is he even first choice? You can chalk this up to “Pep was easing him in”, or something like that, but look at his matches at the end of last season:

Week 34 vs Swansea: came on as a sub. Played 15 minutes.
Week 35 vs West Ham: unused sub.
Week 36 vs Huddersfield: came on as a sub. Played 33 minutes.
Week 37 vs Brighton: came on as a sub. Played 14 minutes.
Week 38 vs Southampton: not in squad.

    3) I’ve heard people on here say that he doesn’t play well with Sane. Sane should start the season well, so maybe Mendy won’t?

The only article I can find is from March 2018, but is based on match against Liverpool in September 2017:

    https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-news-benjamin-mendy-13603263

However, another article from the same publication completely contradicts itself, with Mendy saying “he has an instinctive understanding with Leroy Sane.” The article says “the two men combined to score Man City’s fourth goal against Liverpool but [Mendy] says there is already a good partnership developing”.

    https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-news-benjamin-mendy-13603263

Can anyone shed any light on this point?

    4) He’s expensive. If I’m spending 6.0 on a defender, I want certainty that he’ll play all the time. For 6.0, I actually want attacking returns too. Robertson, Van Dijk, Smalling all look like better options to me.

    5) Manchester City could explode and you may want 3 attacking players. It’s not unthinkable that three Man City midfeilders/attackers could all start the season well and become essential to own. Probably unlikely due to rotation and price (let’s say Aguero, Sane, Mahrez) to need them all, but it was certainly a good option at parts of last season.

    6) He was in France’s World Cup squad. France won the World Cup. That seems like forever ago to me, but it was only four days ago. He’s already back with the Manchester City squad and is on tour in the United States, playing their first game tomorrow in North Carolina. He definitely needs the gametime, as he hasn’t had a full 90 minutes since September 2017. But is he a good long term pick?

Personally, I expect Mendy to start the opening PL game of the season. But he’ll have had no rest since Russia. I can see him having a two game stint and then he’ll need a rest (if he doesn’t get injured).

I don’t intend to wildcard early. I don’t think Mendy is a good long term pick. Naturally, I’ll have some other cracks to fill in my team over the first few weeks and putting in Mendy is too risky for me.

Just as a comment on this, I think the 2 striker situation may change with Mahrez' arrival. Even when Jesus and Aguero play together, one of them has a deeper role, which is a role someone like Mahrez is better suited to play than Jesus is.

      Always proofread before posting.

And in 2015/16, he had a cruciate ligament injury keeping him out for almost tw MONTHS; not weeks.

      1) All players get injured, most of your mentions were < 1 month but valid point.

      2) I believe Pep chose not to change a winning team which was going for records. I expect it to change this year.

      3) As above, Mendy facilitates both Jesus & Aguero not Sane, he would need to slot in the attacking mid spots.

4&5) In his brief spell he looking menacing as an attacker and, i'd consider him captainable.

      6) He's an easy downgrade in the event of injury and on a different attacking level to Walker. Worth the risk assuming he gets several 90s in pre-season.

Pep said that Jesus and Aguero could not play together without the width of an overlapping full back like Mendy (Delph, he said, could not run past defenders). On this basis Pep said he needed to play Sane wide left (and not Jesus) if Delph was playing full back

Nothing was said that Mendy and Sane can not play together, but if Mendy starts then Jesus challenges Sane for a starting spot.

I get that as a short term option. Like I said, I think he will start the first few games.

But I want to set up my team for the long term and I’d rather “wait and see” with Mendy. There are more reliable options at 6.0 I think.

          Read the post then? Downsides:

          - having to spend a transfer;
          - having to deal with rotation so that he doesn’t become unfit;
          - great alternatives like Robertson at the same price who offer similar clean sheet and attacking potential, and are more likely to play a full season without any hiccups;

I’m not saying he’s a horrible pick. For sure, he offers great attacking potential.

But he’s a lot riskier than others at his price. For me, the risk outweighs the reward on him.

Read the replies then, he won’t be rotated

We all have Robbo as well as Mendy and using a transfer to swap out an injured player is hardly a waste - it is what transfers are for.

He had to prove his fitness, that is true, as for your points 2 to 6 ....

2 - he is first choice
3 - no issue with Sane
4 - he is cheaper than Ota and Walker therefore the cheapest nailed way into the back four/five (excluding the keeper)
5 - Mendy will be like a third attacker but for £3 mill less and nailed, not sure many will have or want 3 City attackers due to rotation and risk
6 - no idea what your point is?

Apart from injuries, I think you are way off the mark with your analysis and thinking, but it just my opinion 🙂

What do you think to Laporte at 5.5? Too risky with Stones, Otamendi, Kompany?

There are only 4 City players I consider nailed and that I would consider getting before we see the side settle down - Emerson, Mendy, Walker & KdB (the last two probably won’t start until GW3).

Laporte probably 4th choice center back, but I would not go any where near the other 3 because we do not know who or how many Pep will play

Yea, well played by FPL. Love the approach they have to fringe players who are possible loanees or transfers to lesser sides this season.

If Allison had chosen Cheksea, Cout would be allowed to go to Real and Ward would be #2. But Allison's going to Liverpool so I guess there's going to be fireworks re. Courtois and it might be a deadline day decision. That would then mean Schmeichel will be a last minute TDD thing. So Ward could sneak in as a starting keeper but we're all going to be up at midnight making last moment adjustments!

    Ederson Speroni

    Douglas Robbo PVA Shaw Pernier

    Salah Martial Siggy Kenedy Stephens

Torn between arnie and Zaha but just think everything will go through arnie and will be on pens

Make Tosun a 4.5m bench fodder striker. Downgrade Douglas to a 4.5m defender then upgrade Stephens or Masuaku to Siggy. Makes a decent 442. Just an option to throw your way

I fail to believe Leicester will spend 10m on a back up GK when they have Jakupovic. And at Ward's age, he isn't moving to be a number 2. There's no value in moving from Liverpool's bench to Leicester's bench and earning less in the process.

Sorry but I think this signals that Schmeichel is off 🙁

      1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

He may be off, but I think Roma is more likely than Chelsea. In any case, competition for Kasper when he really messes up (which happens occasionally) is something fans have been asking for for a while.

We need a goalie if Courtois is off and Roma appear to be getting nipples so Schmeichel should be our top target. A pl winning goalie and pen save machine so I don't think there's much higher to aim, especially if we only get 35m for Tbo. Sorry but Ward may well be your no1 next year....

We shall see. Sky are a bit pants anyway. They like to make assertions so people put money on Skybet - for example, earlier this season when it was looking increasingly likely that Maddison would move to Leicester, they put an article out saying that he was headed for Southampton, which probably fixed up their losses as it looked like many were betting on Maddison to Leicester..

The write ups I had read said that when Costa is fit Jota goes central so this line up makes sense. If they don't sign a new striker then Jota ill be nailed in my team.

I can see Jiminez getting the odd start with Jota wide then drifting central. But from what I heard from Wolves fans they weren't impressed by Bonatini and were surprised he was kept on and is more of a backup option.

So unless they get a new forward to compete with Jiminez then Jota will see himself up there regular again like last year.

I don't think he played there last year. Afobe did.

Maybe you should check before you state things as fact. It's fine to be arrogant when you're right but looks very silly when you're not.

Both were on loan but Afobe wasn't kept on - not sure why. I've actually looked into the new team and I'll post the write up I'm basing this on from a Wolves fan since you're ironically asking for evidence despite not fact checking your own claims.

Not sure if it's just how you come across but you seem very against discussion and more just here to tell people your opinion is fact.

Who looks silly and doesn't fact check? lol I'm a little embarrassed for you.

9/44 games at CF isn't nailed.

I said nailed in MY team not the wolves team as a striker. He also according to the report I read finished a lot of games centrally so I'm assuming those aren't taken into account in the 9/44 plus he has a much better record last year.

The fact checking was a comment on Bonatini - he was there.

Check my new post to see where my info is from. You are clearly not interested in a discussion on a forum and just act like a child.

I didn't mention Bonatini so good luck with that.

A constructive point: Jota going central to wrap up and close out games i assume? They won't be in that position as much this year.

Unless I misread your comment and if I did fair enough I apologise but you said he wasn't there last year when I said fans weren't impressed by him last year - but he was as well as Afobe.

They may be chasing games and move him up as a 2 or as a more poignant attacker. That's subjective but the fact is there's the chance and judging by the write up and other sources I've read he seems well worth the extra cash.

You can go Costa if you choose (the guy said he was second best option). I was just looking to discuss pros and cons of both but you kept being overly aggressive in your views.

Check my latest post on the next page to where I got my claims. They're not made up. He regularly went central later on in games.

Not sure why you're on such a mad rant going after me but each to their own.

Bennett as a 4m def, played all pre-season, best 4m def out there?

Agree, costa is a steal at 5m

Bennett is nailed on. Best 4mil out there. Doherty 4.5 nailed as LWB.

Costa a great pick. Jota possibly worth the extra outlay.

Douglas injured, if he doesn't recover for upcoming friendlies, owners should ditch asap.

Already switched to Doherty! How did FPL towers miss Bennett or didn't he play last year>?

Jota isn't worth it IMO unless he gets pens, can't see a striker not being played in the PL.

Not seen Chris Wood in many RMT, scored 10 goals in 20 starts last season, yes there's the Europa League factor but kind opening Fixtures nonetheless

Suprised by the lack of Davies in people's drafts. Rose played in the WC and I doubt he'll get much game time this season.

Davies is a bargain. Newcastle and Fulham first 2!

It’s the rest of the Spurs team that is the worry though, they are so desperate they may have to play Lamela 🙂

Anyway the clever money is on Trippier when he returns to the team
