FPL stars return to training and target Gameweek 1 starts

Several key players have returned to their respective clubs following the World Cup, and are hoping to be involved in Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League.

Last season’s top-scorer Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) was back at Liverpool’s training ground on Friday morning alongside team-mate Sadio Mané (£9.5m).

Both players were knocked out in the group stages in Russia, with Mané involved in three matches, Salah in just two.

The Reds are still waiting for the return of their contingent who reached the knockout stages which includes Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), Dejan Lovren (£5.0m), Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m), Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m).

Christian Eriksen (£9.5m), Son Heung-min (£8.5m) and Davinson Sanchez (£6.0m) are all back with Tottenham and the trio are set to travel to the USA for the club’s pre-season tour.

All three could be involved in Gameweek 1, with the club confirming today that even Son will be available for that match before departing for the Asian Games.

The tournament kicks off on August 14, a few days later and Son has to win it in order to gain immunity from military service. If he achieves that, then he won’t be available until Gameweek 5, with the Games finishing on September 1. An early exit from the competition could see him come back sooner.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane (£12.5m) is hoping to start in Gameweek 1 despite an extended stay in Russia with England.

The Spurs man was at the World Cup until its final weekend, registering 582 minutes at and winning the tournament’s Golden Boot award with six goals.

“I’ll hopefully be back for the first game and hopefully I can try and score in August this year,” Kane told the press when he arrived back in England earlier this week.

Those comments come subsequent to an interview given after England’s third/fourth place play-off defeat to Belgium in which he said he’d be discussing his availability with Mauricio Pochettino.

“We’ll have to talk to the gaffer at Spurs, but it will be a couple of weeks away,” he said.

“Physically your body will always take you where you’d never think it would.

“The important thing is mentally. It will be difficult but something we have to deal with.

“We train all year round, we’re young, we’re fit, your body gets on with it.

“For me personally, and I know for the other lads, it’s just getting away from football really.

“It’s hard, but it’s what we have to do with the season starting so quickly.”

Kane won’t be on Spurs’ pre-season tour, though. In fact, none of the nine players who made it to the last four of the World Cup are on the tour.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is not going to rush any of his key players back, even though he only has four senior first-team players with him on the club’s pre-season tour in the USA.

However, the Manchester Evening News reported on Friday that defender John Stones (£5.5m) is willing to cut-short his extended break so that he can be available to face Chelsea in the Community Shield on August 5.

As we have already mentioned, Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) have already agreed to waive their three-week entitlement, which is why they are currently training in Chicago.

“Physically it’s not a problem but mentally they must be ready, how they come back and handle the situation, day by day,” Guardiola said of his first-team players involved in the World Cup.

“I’d have preferred more time, one month or one month and a half. So many games – but they have to adapt.”

The City manager will support the decision of players who decide not to come back in time for Gameweek 1.
“It is what it is, we know because we spoke – they have to come back ready,” he added.

Elsewhere, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) and Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) have now returned to training for Everton and will travel for the tour of Portugal.

I prefer Siggy too, but Everton's midfield is starting to get crowded and confusing. You would think Siggy was nailed in the #10 position, but a new manager and no preseason games for him yet, so its hard to tell.

Updated team quite a lot today (delayed flight at airport meant too much time to tinker! ). How does this look? Lost Coleman, Mendy, Wan - Bissaka, Martial Cairney, Tosun and Auba for Shaw, Daniels, Tomkins, Siggy, Reid, Firmino and King but not sure this has improved it basically to afford Firmino....

    Ederson Speroni
    Robertson Shaw Cedric Daniels Tomkins
    Salah Mahrez Siggy Costa Reid
    Aubameyang Firmino King

I wonder if early wc strategy is going to work this year. WC players coming back who nows when and teams not settled as early as normally. Imo there is also fixture change after second break. So my plan is trying to manage 8 weeks without wc and change team slowly.

Yet, with this team I have no chance to be the last man standing. I find this team frightening to have and frightening to play against. Too risky?

    Current draft:

    Patricio, Lössl
    Robbo, VvD, Bailly, Coleman, Bennett(?)
    Salah, Sané, Siggy, Richarlison, Hughes(?)
    Agüero, Wood, Kamara(?)

O.5 itb to be flexible if needed (Coleman to Mendy for example). 3x Pool, 3x Everton and 2 rotation risk MCI players... VvD out before difficult fixtures probably.

Anyone got the spine of their team set up ? ie have like a core of certain players who will 100% be in come gameweek 1. mines probably looking at something like

4.5 4.0 (unless Schmeichel goes to CHE then he's a given)
    Mendy Robertson PvA 4.5 4.5
Salah Siggy (KDB Placeholder) X 4.5
    Auba X X

Ive got Salah, Aguero, Robbo nailed. Then theres about 20 different players battling for the outfield slots. Wil mostly come down to wether i want to play a strict 4-3-3 or a looseygoosey 3-4-3/4-3-3 rotation setup

yeah i think i'm set on a 4-4-2 unless a value striker pops up out of somewhere and suprises me then i'll go for a 4-3-3, definitely set on a 4-4-2 though.

Good point, last season Arsenal V Leicester in GW1 was seen as a stay away fixture, same as Arsenal V Liverpool the year before, both games were full of fantasy points.

City, Arsenal and Chelsea will all be front foot teams now, no reason why the goals won't fly in.

Yeah he's nailed. I've been asking people on Everton forums about what they think of their team. Not very optimistic, expecting defense to be horrid. Pickford+Coleman+Sigurdsson-Gueye-Walcott-Tosun nailed in their eyes, not very optimistic for fantasy prospects outside of Tosun+Sigurdsson, maybe Coleman.

One of Keane. Pereira, Sakho, Tomkins, Douglas.

Only thing I don't like about this is the lack of a truly captainable City option. Would have to rotate the captaincy between Salah+Auba+Sanchez

do you not think you'd get more value out of a 5.5 defender than a 5.0 mid by downgrading one of them and upgrading daniels/ cedric to a 5.5 def. Surely PvA (i know you have him) would outscore any 5.0 mid. Obviously it's your call but i personally see more value there.

Thanks, yeah I get what you mean, going more down the 4-3-3 route.
However to switch Cedric/Daniels to a 5.5 def I'd have to downgrade two 5.0 mids and I don't fancy that.
I also don't think there is much difference between Cedric and Daniels and a 5.0m def.

Fair enough. Always going to be weak there with that front line, and wouldn't be my choice, but like to see people doing their own thing.

Looking to improve on my top 100 rank last season, unlikely I know...

    DDG - Speroni
    Mendy - Robertson - Shaw - Cedric - Wan-Bissaka
    Dilva - Mane - Martial - Jota - Jorginho
    Aguero - Zaha - Tosun

Feels very punty with some potential OOPs, thoughts please?

If you finished top 100 you need no advice from me.

Does seem to be a few potential rotation risks though.

Going without Salah, very bold move but I guess that's what it takes to get to the top.

the only problem with having decent players on the bench is that when u bench them and they score it is infuriating, if u think he will score well i'd just start most of the time.

    De Gea

    Van Dijk, Mendy, Coleman, Cedric

    Salah, Keita, Sane, Silva

    Tosun, Lacazette

    Speroni, Bennett, Stevens, Kamara

I save some money on the attack and get back a very solid defense and a great midfield. Also feel great to have a starting midfield only containing Liverpool and City players. Only thing thats make me unsure is if Mendy is nailed or not?

      Robertson over VVD
Downgrade Keita (monitor for now) so you can afford Auba for Laca

I'd welcome him at Spurs too.

I'd have thought being left out of the French squad would have prompted him to leave Utd in search of gametime and a manager who has an interest in improving young players.

    Pickford
Van Aanholt - Robertson - Luke Shaw
    Martial - Mané - Sané - Jota - Ramsey
    Firmino - Aguero

    Speroni -- Bednarek - Tomkins - Andone

    Gtg?

    Lacazette Firmino

    Begovic Kamara Ward WanBissaka

    Pickford
    Mendy - Shaw - Robertson
    Mahrez - Kenedy - Jota - Mane - Salah (c)
    Aguero - Arnautovic

    Stekelenburg - Doherty - AWB - 4.5m

With so many value options in midfield compared to very few value forwards, I feel like a 5-midfielder formation is the best way to go this year. Pickford will become Schmeichel should he join Chelsea. How's it looking?
