Great Expectations

Potential for Pogba to have best-ever FPL season in 2018/19

Fresh from scoring in the World Cup final and winning the coveted trophy with France, Paul Pogba (£8.0m) could be about to record his best ever season with Manchester United.

The midfielder may miss the first few weeks of the campaign but across the course of 2018/19 there is great potential for him to be an important Fantasy Premier League asset.

A thigh muscle injury between September and November restricted Pogba to just 27 appearances for the Red Devils last season, but he still managed to record his highest ever FPL score of 138 from six goals and 13 assists. No United player was the provider for more goals and only Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was involved in more than him.

We’ve had a look at some of the reasons why we expect Pogba to improve on that over the next 12 months, even if he will miss the first few weeks of the campaign through extended World Cup leave.

NEW POSITION

The arrival of Fred (£6.0m) at Old Trafford should allow Pogba more freedom to commit to attack this season. With the new signing potentially sat alongside Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) in holding midfield, Pogba will have less defensive responsibilities to concern himself with. Although it must be said that he particularly shone in a slightly deeper role for France next to N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and Steven N’Zonzi in the World Cup final. At the same time, Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) earned Jose Mourinho’s favour playing as the central attacking midfielder in 2017/18 and Pogba may have to displace him if he hopes to play further up the pitch.

SHOTS FIRED

Pogba clearly has an eye for goal and should surpass his previous goal tally of six this season. Only six midfielders had more shots last season, despite him only playing 27 games. In fact, out of the Premier League’s most trigger happy midfielders in 2017/18, only Mohamed Salah (4.0) and Alexis Sánchez (2.83) averaged more shots per game than Pogba’s 2.81. The Frenchman even registered more shots per match than Lukaku’s 2.5, although the Belgian striker was more accurate. A large number of those efforts came from outside of opposing penalty areas but if Pogba does earn a more advanced role the percentage of those taken inside the box would likely increase.

IN THE MONEY

On the whole, Pogba offered better value than any of Manchester United’s regular starting attacking assets last season. His points-per-match (ppm) of 5.1 could not be beaten by anyone at Old Trafford. The more expensive Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) came in at 4.9 ppm, Lukaku’s was 4.76 ppm while Lingard, while cheaper, had a points-per-match of 3.87. Even if Pogba retains his position in deeper midfield he could still prove better value across the season than Sánchez and Lukaku who are £2.5m and £3.0m dearer than him respectively.

I'm an Evertonian and I'm staying well-clear of our defence for now. This squad still looks totally incoherent. Coleman could, of course, get immediate attacking returns but can't see many clean sheets and he's statistically likely to get attacking points in - what? - every fourth game? Bet you transfer him out for an Arsenal defender in GW3!

Again, not from the off. He was in my first draft because I love the player, but he hasn't had any pre-season yet and we're still not sure where Silva's going to put him, or how often, or if he's on pens. I'd say he probably only becomes an option for me in the future if he is indeed on spot-kicks.

If Silva manages to fashion a coherent first XI out of this ramshackle squad, with him as a no.10 in a 4-2-3-1, with a proper striker in front of him and also being on pens then, yes, I agree, he'd be a steal. Fingers crossed!

Meh, it's just personal preference. No way Palace get as many penalties as last season, Zaha may well leave, and I'm still bitter about never owning him last season. But very good strategy to have a 6.5mid, though. So many (potentially great) options at that price-point.

Similar team - but not convinced by Mili

      Ederson / Speroni

      Robertson / Shaw / Tompkins / Cedric /( Peltier)
      Salah / Mahrez / Martial / Myki / (Kenedy* )
      Firmino / Aguero (Kamara )

      * -or Stevens then you can dump Martial for Pogba in week three when he will be back. Short term Martial playing up front (therefore OOP) for United.....

How do you choose your bench filler?

Personally I prefer to have my budget on the pitch. I'll put a bit more money on the bench for the fixture congested festive season or if I choose to gamble with non-nailed players in my first team but generally I don't like to spend more than 0.5m over the minimum on my bench.

From my 1st sub i'm looking for a solid 2pts so just someone who is nailed and card magnets or injury prone players as the last thing I want to do is waste a transfer on a bench player.

For subs 2 and 3 my main concern is that they don't lose value. There is so little chance that I will actually use them (or if I do that they will deliver more than a single point in a late cameo) that I tend to pick players that nobody on FFS would choose. My logic is these players are only usually owned by casuals who are more likely to lose interest in the game. Having a player who is mostly owned by dead team is great insurance against price drops. Later if I have FT I don't need or on my wild card I'll swap this player out for someone who has fallen to raise the extra spendable 0.1m.

the sub2&3 strategy is still risky. everyone has interest in the beginning of the FPL season, and lower ownerships translate to lower thresholds for price drops. so there very well might be price drops in the early gws

In reality though no-one is wasting their transfers on their 2nd and 3rd subs. It'll be a couple of months before we see the first 3.9 defs or 4.4 mids and strikers.

That is assuming that no cheap player is going to do anything. If a 4.5 player does something good, or a 4.0 def does anything at all, in gw 1, I would expect to see people move their 4.5/4.0 players to that guy, leading to price drops.

Which is why I pick terrible options for my 2nd and 3rd subs. Dead teams don't transfer players.

With a decent bench you can ride out injuries etc and not take hits - I reckon I will save 30 points this season with a decent bench saving me hits. Last year my non playing bench killed me with having to take hits for my starting 11 🙁

Interesting. I generally avoid injury prone and non-nailed players. I dislike riding out injuries because you lose budget as well as having a lot of cash not working for you. Except during periods of fixture congestion I don't ever remember using my 2nd sub let alone my 3rd. I'm not sure I even want to be tempted to ride out an injury because I hate losing budget early in the season.

      Big fan of Lacazette.

But i think Auba is the best premium forward atm. Once all players are back from world cup and whatnot, Lacazette may be my 2nd striker

Auba could get shifted out wide which would put me off him somewhat.

I reckon he could challenge for Golden Boot if he’s he out and out striker.

I’m giving Auba a miss until the tough fixtures are out the way and we know how Emery lines them up.

I also probably wouldn’t consider Laca.

Will Salah score plenty of goals, yes he will. However I reckon he will also blank in more gameweeks than he did last season. If your paying 13m then he will have to be your captain for any decent fixture, if he blanks more then that's more captain fails. Having said that It is worth investing from the off and I will be using a early wildcard anyways so get the first 4 gameweeks to assess. After that it is Spurs (A) GW5, Chelsea (A) GW7, Man City (H) GW8 and potential rest before any champions league games means I will certainly be considering going without after GW4, but this depends on how strong he starts and how other midfielders are doing.

      1. Deulofail

Cosidering the same. IInitially I'd planned to have Aguero and Auba.

But I'm wondering if it's worth starting with Aguero and Firmino, before switching to Aubameyang and Lacazette, but in reality I'll likely need the transfer elsewhere, and there's no guarantee Lacazette will be a top target in GW3.

So then I think well why not start with Firmino and Lacazette to save the money and have a more optimal GW1-2 team. But it leaves a more difficult rout to Auba and is gererally less exciting (fewer great captaincy options too).

So then I'm thinking, well why not get Aguero and Auba again, and downgrade Aguero to Lacazette if he looks better value than Kane/Lukaku/Aguero/Firmino/Vardy after a few GWs, and I'm back to where I started. 😀

Based off the lengths you're going to justify he's not a good pick. We all want to pick the best players and it's ok to try and justify who the best players are.

It's also ok to justify who not to pick but noone needs to ramble on about Kante because we know he's unproductive FPL wise. You've been obssessed with disproving Salah's credentials proving that you're scared of what he's capable of

He is a great pick, just not for 13m.

My point is that I think the money can be spent better elswhere, and that buying him out of fear is silly.

I’m still mad at Lacazette for stealing Auba (c)’s hat trick by taking that second penalty last season. I forget who they played. It I’m sure you know. I therefore count that as Auba’s goal, thus removing 1 from Laca’s tally.

    Fabianski, Dubr
    Cedric, Monreal, Azpi, Holebas, Daniels
    Mkhi, Sane, Eriksen, Sess, Wilshere
    Arnie, Auba, Firm.

Would most likely play 343 or 352.

Different, but not too bad. Wilshere and Sessegnon are questionable and no city / Liverpool defence might hurt a bit. I'm not too sure you offset not having Salah with the other picks.

Completely agree. At 6.0 I'd at least have a think about it (just about fits into my current structure) but at 6.5, not a chance. To start with, anyway.

Mitrovic was terrible last time he played in the Prem. Scoring goals in the Championship very rarely equates to goals at this level apart from perhaps Charlie Austin, but that wasn’t really a surprise as his quality stood out.
Annie is a winger who for part of the season played as a forward in a tactical switch by a manager who is no longer there. It is by no means certain he will play as a striker this season, as is the case with Zaha.
Tosun hasn’t really proved himself in the Prem as yet but he is at least guaranteed to play centrally and has the players around him to create more chances than Mitrovic will have. From what I’ve seen of him I’d say he is the best option at this stage.

Agree with every word of this, apart from the mild Tosun enthusiasm. Really hope I'm wrong, but he looked badly off the pace against Bury the other day and rumours persist that he still hasn't settled. And many will tell you that 'Silva loves Niasse' (although Cenk clearly a better player when fit-and-firing). I guess I just hate mid-priced strikers generally.

I read a match report that said no chances were created in the first half v Bury so I wouldn’t single out Tosun on his own there, although it is a slight concern. Having said that, it’s very early in pre season so I wouldn’t read too much into it just yet. From what I’ve seen of both players Tosun as you say is far superior. There are also some quotes from after the Bury game where Silva suggests Niasse will be effective coming off the bench, or words to that effect.

You'd think that would be the case, yeah. I watched that Bury game and, honestly, he looked like a pub player. He has a few weeks left but he was in my draft before that game and out of it by half-time.

Agree - watched the game too (no life whatsover) and Niasse completely blew him away in the second half. Very strange.

If he gets injured, it´s gonna be military service for him.

There is something strange with this `he is available now´ bit.

From what I understand he has always been available but Spurs have recognized the fact that it´s no good starting him.
Due to South Korea´s failure at world cup they pretty much need to win the Asian games for Son not do the Military service.
Back in the World cup that was held in South Korea/Japan, that South Korean team all got free passes as a reward for doing so well.

So either there is a new agreement and Son wont have to do the military service in any scenario or this is just bullcrap news. But something is missing

New contract or no new contract, fact remains. Military service is 2 years but it´s quite possible that he already has got a pass and that is the piece missing in this puzzle.
We´ll get the full story soon enough as always.
Though it would be a bit crazy from their government to put such a promising career to a hault...

I want KDB, but considering he doesn't start GW1 i don't really know what to do (i don't like planning transfers), maybe i just start him and have a decent first sub? doesn't sound like the best strategy but i really want him.

You said it yourself, options are have him on the bench or plan a transfer.

If you've got the 10m could always get Sane and then keep 0.5m in the bank to potentially upgrade to KDB. If you don't want to upgrade him or need to put it off for a while to spend your frees on other transfers then you've already got City coverage, and if you do no transfers needed to make up the difference.

Anyone starting with Salah but planning a wildcard after GW4 ( the international break ) and then assessing whether it worth sticking with him? After his nice easy opening fixtures he has Spurs (A) GW5, Chelsea (A) GW7, Man City (H) GW8 and potential rest before any champions league games.

really happy with my lastest draft. looks like a nice balance in all areas?

    Ederson
    Robertson - Coleman - Cedric
    Salah - Mahrez - Jota - Hughes
Aguero - Aubameyang - Mitrovic (assuming is 6.0)

    Bench: Tomkins, Peltier, Stephens

Sørloth £5.0 can play left, right or up front, comparing his stats per game to the likes of similar and even high price forwards - Perez, Austin, Murray, King, Wood etc looks lovely. Especially from GW1 to GW9 his fixtures are inciting for the price. Pre-season looking great, one goal with three assists thus far.

Can't see him being first choice. Woy in a 4-4-2 played Schlupp left mid so far, Zaha & Benteke i imagine first choice. 4-3-3 Zaha Benteke/Sorloth - Townsend....I say he's unlikely.

Yeah, watching him like a hawk. Looks like Roy is not intending to use Zaha as a no.9 so, if it's a battle between Sorloth and Benteke, then Sorloth will obvs win that and we have a striker with those fixtures for 5.0.

Finally settled on this. What you reckon guys?

    Foster (Fabianski)
    Robertson, PVA, Tomkins (Schelotto, Bennett)
Salah (c), Dilva, Mkhi, Neves (Gunnarsson)
    Auba, Aguero, Zaha

Nope. The price is irrelevant when you’re picking who to bench - bench the players you think will score the fewest points 🙂 and it’s only 1 GW of 38

RMT (with Kane and Salah the rest has to be pretty weak but this is my first draft)

    Begovic
    Vertonghen - Daniels - Cedric - Tomkins
    Salah (C) - Sessegnon - Sane - Neves
    Kane - Aubameyang

    Speroni - Reid - Kenedy - Peltier

Interesting lineup - couple of questions though:

Why do you prefer Kane to Kun for the first 2 or 3 GW’s out of interest?

Do you rate Mané, Firmino, VVD and/or Roberston’s Chances of points?

I'm a spurs fan and I just don't want to face the ball ache it'll be to fit Kane in if he starts scoring loads. Yeah I think most Liverpool players will be good picks - tempted to put Robertson in instead of Vert but again.... Spurs fan!

Really positive about Pogba’s chances this year (if he stays). 8.0 could be an absolute steal.

First international break WC I think, to reshuffle things to include Pogba & KDB, and whichever, if any of the Arsenal & Chelsea brigades that look good.

In the interim, 3 City, 3 Liverpool & a back 5 for the lolz

        Behold:

        Patricio
        VVD, Mendy, PVA, Coleman, Douglas
        Salah, Sané, Mahrez, Martial
        Firmino
(Boruc, Cairney, Kamara, Quaner) +1.0 ITB currently

The extra cash I can’t find a home for at th minute as I can’t stretch Mahrez or Sané up to Kun... so could be used for Martial > Pogba, or Mahrez/Sané >KDB, Cairney > 6.0, Quaner > 5.5 etc depending on how GW1 goes.

Going to take a deep breath & avoid arsenal for GW1 to see how they go. But Auba, Ramsey, Mkhi, Laca, Bellerin and Leno all on watchlist.

I think Silva in isolation doesn't make much sense, why not double up on city attack / midfield?

Also Coleman? I get the allure but it's mostly nostalgia. Also Baines, Williams and Jagielka are old and Schneiderlin was terrible last season.

Wait and see with Miki, I'm not sure if he is gonna start. Other options as well at that price or 7.5, and the first two fixtures are not the best.

Silva is likely to be short term, so only have him if you're willing to transfer him out soon. He will be a serious rotation risk in a few GWs. Mkhi should be fine and could end up being a bargain at 7.0m as things stand, but keep an eye on Arsenal pre-season - and transfers, as we've been linked to wingers like Coman recently.

Where do people see the better value 6.5/under mids or 6.5/under fwds? This decides whether i go for a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 with the 6.5/under player being my 4th mid or 3rd fwd....

Mids, for sure. So many potentially great options at 6.5 - at least one of them will eplode and you'll have a space for them already. I'd rather have a bench-fodder thrid-forward than a mid-priced-Austin that blanks for three weeks and then gets dropped.

Looking at team structure I have two options that I am considering.
Premium defenders are £5.5m+ eg Robertson, Mendy, Smalling, Coleman & Monreal.

    A) 3 premium defenders to play each week + Firmino (2 x £4.5m defenders on the bench each week)
    B) 5 premium defenders + £7m striker (defenders rotate depending on fixture)

Firmino should average at roughly 2 points per game more points than Arnautovic/Tosun.
Will rotating the premium defenders so that they only have good fixtures result in 2 extra points a week vs playing the same three every time?

im going 2 premium defenders ( VVD and mendy ) plus 3 guys that rotate and cheap ( daniels , cedric , wan-bissaka) 3 premium works but definitely not 5 invest in more attacking positions
