England World Cup influence on FPL transfer market shifts

Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

What are peoples thoughts on Alexis Sanchez

He should be leading the line in the first few games and United's first 8 fixtures are quite favourable

for him to represent any kind of good value, he would have to dramatically increase productivity from last season. It's very speculative to assume that he'll do so. i'll pass.

I think he looked like crap last season.

Playing for Jose Mourinho equals more defending compared to playing for Arsene Wenger

It's a new season, he could be worth a punt. But 10.5 is too much.

      I prefer

      Salah. Martial.
      Aubameyang. Aguero.

      Martial will become Mkhitaryan

10.5 could be a reasonable price for him if he shows the form of a couple of seasons ago (and if Utd allow a more free attacking style than last season).

I find it really difficult at present to see him as justifying 1.0M in price over Mane, Sane and Eriksen. He's also still more expensive than KDB.

      Yes.

Rotation throughout the season between the two, with Gomez playing occasionally at RB.

Finally given in and decided that Salah is worth having to begin with, Salah filled team now:
    Ederson
    Shaw Bellerin robertson
    Mahrez Salah (c) Martial Richarlison
    Zaha Arnie Aubameyang

    Stekelenburg, cedric, wan bissaka, stephens

    Thoughts?

Was contemplating zaha and Wan Bissaka > Reid and Coleman

Appreciate the feedback, martial will become Lingard when he is back, unsure with Shaw yet, have a strange feeling that mourinho may stick with him and make him no.1 LB this season, i may be completely nuts though

Tomkins is likely to be a season keeper. W-B could be dropped after a few games, as usually happens with starting 4m defenders.

Think that Ederson and Robbo are safer for same money.
      Cedric wont start GW1.
      Coleman is fools gold.
Richarlison is Richarlison, wait and see as he may be rotated or simply wont be regular from gw1.
Also think that 11mil striker slot is important in team structure (if someone explodes you need to get him in one move)

Currently yes. Don't think any of the defenders are value (Coleman could be but unclear if he can produce attacking returns), can't see myself wanting more than one of Walcott, Siggy, Richarlison, Tosun.

    Hi guys.

Anyone care to run the rule over this mob/

    Pickford
    Mendy Robertson Shaw
    Salah Sane Siggi Jota
    Aguero Firmino Kamara

    Stekelenberg Wan-Biss Stephens Peltier

Main bone of contention being Aguero or Aubameyang and what to do with Shaw as and when Young gets back in

    Cheers.

Kolasinac. There must be reason why people are ignoring him. What am I missing here? Why is he not in more drafts?

      Monreal.

See closer to GW1 who's starting at LB.

He is not a starter as of yet. New coach might help him but best thing would be Monreal leaving for Sociedad. We have until gw3 to come to a conclusion luckily

Watford have 12 listed defenders this season. 6 CBs, 3LBs and 3 RBs. It's a nailedness nightmare.

Even though Lovern isn’t expected to start the season. I have a strong bench as a back up. Which do you prefer.

    A/ Eriksen. Martial. Lovern.

    B/ Mahrez. Mkhitaryan. Robertson.

I really want Eriksen over Mahrez. Martial is always going to become Mkhitaryan.
Mahrez is a transfer waiting to happen also.

You don't own Salah. But if he scores in the next 45 minutes, does this change your train of thought in including him within your draft?

I can not justify salah's price tag. I know he scored 300 plus points last year but liv had no bench then. Klopp has addressed that. I expect more roatation and less fortune so unless he bangs in hat tricks between then and now then I am planning the campaign without him. Kanr has to be a better bet once things settle early on. Can only afford one really

Needs a bit of umph up top, poor 4-4-2 and it's probably the easiest formation to 'look good'. Ask these lads, they'll help.

What’s the consensus on City strikers for first 4 games?

Would love Aguero (c) for GW2-4 but is he gonna be back training that much sooner than Jesus?

Jesus is one of those super fit players who gets up to speed quickly - have a feeling they will split the first 4 games equally myself but would like to hear argument to say Aguero starts for 3/4?

    1. Texas Pete

It seems odd saying it but i'm a little on the fece with Aguero from the start. He's there at the mo but I might change it before kick off.

Kun should start as long as he's 100% fit.

Concerns me yes, 11m without 100% nailed is tough to swallow
But it’s tough to do otherwise when I want Lukaku and Kane from GW4-5 and only Aguero and Aubamayang will do in that price bracket
