Best Southampton players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Should I roll with the below for the first 2 weeks? Tempted to leave as is to have the four City players, but I have a few rubbish picks. Obviously any changes mean I have to drop a city player.

    Ederson
    Robertson, PVA, Cedric
    Sane, Mahrez, Mane, Fraser
    Kun, Firmino, Zaha

    Boruc, Daniel's, WB, Challobah

Had this team before Mahrez transferred to city. I can keep as long as I make no transfers.

But I will probably do as you suggest below and shore up the defense

Ignore Jack. Not bad. I'd be a tad concerned about Brady playing as I think he's just back from injury. Personally I'd downgrade one defender and upgrade Brady.

Quite like the fact, that there seems to be some decent options from the top 6 teams in the pricebracket 6.5-7.5 millions. I'm thinking of the likes of Willian (if he goes to united), Pedro (Seems very likely if Hazard/and or Willian departs) and Mkhitaryan. If they are all nailed, I'm thinking of a midfield with the three of them alongside Salah. But this is not good for the balance of the team, as I will be needing two transfers to get in a +9 midfielder, unless I sacrifice Salah.

    Thoughts?

True. Helpful too because the below 6.5m options from the lesser teams aren't great.

Mornign. There you have good old mmm, midpriced midfield minefield. I will pick Salah / D.Silva / Richalison / Hughes + on from those, Pedro, Willian, Fabregas, Mkhitaryan, Lamela.

    Coleman, Robertson, Cedric
    Salah, Mane, Sane, Jota, Cairney

Please help as I'm stuck. Thanks.

Dont think Coleman is worth 5.5 before Everton have prove they can shutdown opponents.. Rather have Shaw as a punt or Bailey. DDG a tad expensive. Would rather go for Schmeichel (5.0) or whoever signs for Chelsea

Will ask a couple of things which I'm thinking for:

    - Expect Mendy, Bailly to be nailed on, right?

    - I have 7.0M to spend for a midfielder -- what about Mkhi from the beginning?

    - Don't know how Pep will rotate his midfielders... Who do you think will be nailed on except KdB after he takes his rest?

    - Arnie's in my current team despite WHU tough fixtures. Is he in yours? 🙂

    - Have no Man Utd attacker and any Chelsea, Tottenham cover at the moment. Is that going to be a problem?

      - Yes
      - Take a punt on someone else like Pedro, at least for the first couple of games. Mkhitaryan from gw3.
      - Unfortunately.. None. But given Mahrez age and form, he could be. But it's risky
      - Nope. Too tough fixtures for my liking. I have Aguero + Firmino + 4.5
      - .Probably won't hurt you with United because of Mourinho. Spurs have tough fixtures. Regarding to Chelsea, I've already mentioned Pedro

Thanks for answering all my questions.

        - Why do people suddenly start to like Pedro? He didn't play that well in the previous seasons.

        - Currently have Sane, but wondering whether to downgrade him to Mahrez because every penny maters IMO.

        - Firmino was in my previous draft but then ditched him to strengthen my midfielders.

About Pedro. Imo people think that Pedro should fit nicely into Sarri's team plans. Sarri likes to press high and he needs players who have pace and are willing to run and press. And also in Chelsea there are many players who were in WC (Hazard, Willian, RLC) and maybe need some rest. Also transfer rumours for Hazard & Willian

Next season, David maybe will not play every game, that's why the squad has to be big," said Guardiola.

“He's played more due to his absence, more energy in the legs. The decisions are taken day by day and it is what it is.”

For the 7m mid- I'd go Townsend (great stats late last season) or Richarlison as a punt for 6.5m (maybe Pedro if the new system suddenly suits him more).

Starting with D.Silva myself from City. Hoping he is nailed at the beginning at least but plenty of other options if not- Pogba, Ramsey.

Charlie Austin for me @6m up top. If he gets on the pitch and stays a bit fit he will score. That extra 1m helps too.

Sanchez in for me atm from those teams you mentioned. It means going Salahless tho. Hoping Mane, Sanchez, D Silva, Firm up top can make up for going without Salah.

        I already have Richarlison.
Gotta monitor Pedro then because you're the second guy who mentioned him.

I like Charlie Austin too but he's a big injury prone... Do you think he's going to be nailed on? Praying for him to stay fit as much as possible.

Going Salahless gives you flexibility but I won't go without him...

      - Who knows? But the potential upside for Mendy means I'm choosing him and mentally preparing myself that he'll miss the odd game.

      - I'm currently on Jota/Richarlison - but keeping 0.5m itb in case I want to switch to Mhiki. Auba probably enough for the first two weeks.

      - Who knows? But I'm going with Mahrez. Think he is a more complete player than both Sane and Sterling and potentially more versatile too.

      - Yes. Have Bournemouth, Wolves and Everton in first five gameweeks - so not all bad.

      - Same here. Very comfortable with the situation - but am monitoring potential bargains at Chelsea. Am going Mane over Firmino, as that allows for a quick swap to Eriksen, if required at some point.

Hi Arndff_ - off the back of your message I have just set up an FPL-specific Twitter account - @Reuser5.

Was tempted to go with Mhiki from the beginning too, but overall I think there are still too many questions about him to justify putting him in for those two difficult fixtures. Having said that, I'm not a fan of planning transfers, especially at this early stage of the season.

My midfield is currently: Salah, Mahrez, Mane, Jota (Chalobah) with 0.5m ITB.

Do we think that D. Silva is a more nailed on option than the other attacking City mids (other than KDB)? Feel like he played most games last season barring the ones he missed with his personal issues. Thinking of saving the 1mil and getting him over Sane.

It's based on a multiple linear regression where I include data such as total shots, SiB, shots in 6yard box, pen touches, passes in final third etc. That's all I can say here 😉

    Ederson (hamer)
    Robbo bailly keane (tomkins peltier)
    Salah eriksen mahrez richarlison ralls

Should i re-distribute eriksen funds to upgrade keane and ralls, or better to have 9.5 mid as placeholder?

Sane and Mkhi seem to start strong even if they fall away. Arnie is already hot. Mahrez looks polished always but doesn't translate to points every time. Cairney who is he? Firmino, when is he joining the tour?

Would love some early thoughts on this team:

    Ederson (4.0)
    Bailly, Robertson, Holebas, Doherty, WB
    Salah, Siggy, Jota, Hughes, Masuaku
    Kun, Firmino, Zaha

2.0 ITB and have flexibility to tinker.

Only keeping Bailly for a few GW's. Will become Bellerin in GW3.

Siggy to Myki or Ramsey in GW3-4 too. Could also go a big hitter like Eriksen.

    So Wolves XI will be:

    Patricio
    Boly - Saiss - Coady
    Douglas - Moutinho - Neves - Doherty
    Costa - Jota - Cavaleiro

With Jimenez and Bonatini subbing on later during matches with the odd start (and any of the two Cs missing out)

So many options to choose from there.. Doherty at 4.5 could provide really good value actually.

I like 1, but without Mkhi to start. Look at him from GW3 maybe. I prefer Siggy or Richalison to start. Going Richarlison will also free up 1.0 for somewhere else, but then I do feel he may take time to settle in and Siggy is the better option.

I've seen a few people comment that it's not worth having Ederson as it's a waste of a Man City spot in your team. Is this really fair?

I think having 3 City attackers is probably too many, therefore 2 attackers and one from defence/GK seems like it would work. Some have said that you are better off having Otamendi or Mendy as they offer attacking returns and Ederson does not get the save points of other keepers.

But Ederson got 2 points more than Otamendi last season so I don't think that logic works either.

I do however see the logic that a 4.5 keeper may actually get similar returns to Ederson, but looking at the 4.5 keeper options I'm not convinced I want to start the season with any of them. Fabianski would be my best option, but his fixtures are pretty terrible.

What do people think about keepers? Is Ederson worth the extra outlay or should I go for Fabianski and just keep for the season? Is Mendy or Otamendi worth the extra outlay over Ederson?

Oh and rotation of keepers? Im not a fan really.

Mendy to start with...and Patricio. But I might be wrong, of course.

      1. Jackie Moon
        • 5 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

I like Mendy, but have a number of other defensive options to choose from where as I can't find another GK I really want. Patricio could be great value, but again concerned going with a promoted team GK who is playing some pretty attacking teams early on.

Kinda looking at it this way... Ederson and PVA, or Patricio and Mendy. Really tough to call which paid will score more, but I'm thinking Patricio will be the lowest scorer out of the 4.

    2. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

If you take on a City defender then Mendy/Ederson a good choice. I would prefer to have the versatility for 3 City atackers but I am leaning towards the 2 I mentioned short term.
