Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

As the first match of the 2018/19 Premier League season creeps ever closer we switch focus to Sky Sports’ Fantasy game.

We have launched our Free League for the campaign and you can find details of how to join it below.

Here we go over the basics of the game before we delve into more detail in the coming days.

How do I play?

Just like in FPL you select a squad of players that will either earn you attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than your friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

Gameweeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Gamedays, allowing maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Also, instead of one free switch per Gameweek (and a maximum of two if a previous one is saved), the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used any time during the season, with a limit of five in one Gameweek, creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

Wildcards, or Overhauls, are also available in Sky Sports. The first one becomes available to use following the completion of Gameweek 4 and remains an option until the deadline for Gameweek 6. The second one becomes active after the final match of Gameweek 27, through Gameweek 28 and until the Gameweek 29 deadline.

In Sky Sports Fantasy you can name more than one captain in a Gameweek depending on who is playing on which day. Managers are limited to one captain per day allowing them to potentially have up to four in one Gameweek and get double points for all of them. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Gameweek, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those match days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Gameweek too.

How do you score points?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match5

Can My Team Lose Points?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

How do Bonus Points work?

Just like FPL there are additional points on offer for other events in matches, although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below.

Tier 1 Action
Points scored
5 saves made (GK only)2
3 tackles made (all)2
60 completed passes2
3 shots on target2
Tier 2 Action
Points scored
7+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles made (all)3
70+ completed passes3
5+ shots on target3

How do I play against my friends?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in Sky Sports Fantasy. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

How can I join the Fantasy Football Scout league?

As usual, we have got a league on Sky Sports Fantasy. It’s called FFScout and you can join using the code 8386881.

I think fixture wise the first 2 gameweeks are an ideal time to face Man City and Chelsea. They will be missing key players due to world cup involvement. I would focus more so on attacking Arsenal players for this fixtures as clean sheets are unlikely but with a new manager and a decent pre-season campaign Arsenal look revived again and should trouble City and Chelsea before a kinder run of fixtures.

They've been unaffected by the World Cup and have had a full preseason together.

Also, their attacking talent is immense.

I'm happy to take the price rises without having to make transfers for them ahead of GW3.

      1. Klopp For The Kopps 😆

Who said Aguero and Firm won't rise in price?
Aguero more likely to rise in price than Auba IMO, if Aguero scores a Brace, plays HUD at home next, .2 price rise pretty much certain, other hand Auba scores a Brace, plays Chelsea next, can't be sure about .2 rise

Firmino's ownership indicates he won't rise in price very quickly.

Aguero not likely to start both games either. 11 million for a guy who may start? No thank you.

What are you on about? 'uncertainty' 'bad fixtures' 'placeholder'

Not more uncertainty than Chelsea, Liverpool & City?
I am not convinced Firm will start in GW1, and same could be said about Agüero? I would say I am way more convinced, that Laca and Auba will play.

City and Chelsea need key players - they can't keep Arsenal from scoring. Just don't buy Gunners defenders from the start?

Placeholders? You might get a bit upset, when Auba or Laca has scored 2 goals after the first two GW's, and Agüero or Firm are still MIA xD On top of that you spend a transfer, which you could use somewhere else.

Pick Firm or Agüero if you want and swap 1 of them for Laca/Auba in GW3. Be my guest. Just don't blame Klopp or Pep if your two strikers pick their noses on the bench in GW1 (and if they are benched, then you can't make the swap in GW3 anyways. You'll be forced to do it after GW1 to avoid the drop in price).

Arsenal are banging in dem goals, and they will be fielding close to strongest 11. City & Chelsea however, will not.

      1. Klopp For The Kopps 😆
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Firm is back in the squad, 8 days for Prem to start, I'm 100% sure he will start.
And about Arsenal, they played single striker last few games, likely they'll start with one of them come GW1, so there is uncertainty there too, and even if they do start, their first 2 games are bad.
Chelsea and City won't field there best 11, agree, but their squad will still be better than the opponent Firm is facing and Aguero too against HUD.
I'm gonna be your guest, we will come back to this, If not Firm (cuz I haven't decided between him or Mane), I'll definitely take Aguero.

      2. Klopp For The Kopps 😆
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

And I'm not saying Laca/Auba are bad picks, just that Firm/Aguero are better picks for start of the season, I'll myself drop one for Laca/Auba once the fixtures turn in GW3

Short term favourable fixtures which they will surely be targeting getting points from ahead of a truly awful run of games. Anyways like I said I am really only looking at him from a "First Sub" role when my Manchester City player inevitably doesn’t start thanks to peps rotation.

I’m having a 5.0 for my 5th mid. Haven’t settled on one yet. Might cough up an extra .5 to get more options. As a first sub, like in your case, he’ll probably do a decent job.

I know there was a lot of disappointment when Arnie was reclassified as a forward. Goals of 4 points versus 5. What I haven’t seen discussed is the increase of BPS, as a forward is awarded 24, and mid is 18.

It won’t make up for all of the single point goal losses, but he will get back some in additional BPS points.

I think Tosun is very underrated in here, he's the only out and out striker of the 3, as well as probable penalty taker (he's scored 25/26 career spot kicks). If you take Everton's pre season form with a pinch of salt, he has all the makings of a 15-20 goal striker this season

He's shared pre-season with Niasse and Sandro, playing less minutes than Sandro and alittle more than Niasse.
Yes , he maybe under-rated but not 100% straight forward choice either.

      Is Luiz a starter?
Looks alright. Don´t really think Jota is worth 6.5 though.

If Christensen's injury is ligament related, I'd expect Luiz to start with Rudiger.

Two minor things - not sure about a Palace double up in defence unless AWB is sub 3, and it's not clear if Cedric or Luiz will be playing GW1. Other than that, looks pretty good!

I was expecting a higher ownership than 5.2% on PVA. He will not give you consistency but has the highest point ceiling for defenders imo.

      People prefer consistency.

The lack of consistency means you're likely to get rid before you get any returns from him, especially when he's 5.5m.

Decent fixtures for palace in the beginning so worth the gamble for me.

He's worth sticking with for 8 gameweeks. Ride out the waves then re-assess.

Good pick but your paying 1m more for him than Tompkins what is that 1m going to get you over a season? An extra 2goals maybe?

Defence is pretty weak. Questions over DSilva starting GW1 too.

Go for one of Arnie and Zaha and spend a bit more on the defence?

True...maybe need to downgrade Ederson. Or DSilva to one of Mkhitaryan/Jota/Ramsey...?

What do you think is best?

    7m Mid (Mkhitaryan) + 5.5 Forward

    7m Forward (Arnautovic) + 5.5 Mid

    Thanks 😀

Second one, purely because Mkhi is a massive punt and also there are no 5.5 mids.

Arnie will do great this season, and then you can have Neves/Costa/Cairney as the mid and have a spare 0.5M 🙂

      7m forward and 5.5 mid.
You currently have a max of 29 fowards 5.5m or less to choose from but there are 134 midfielders that are 5.5m or under and some of these will be regular starters for the top 6 teams aswell.

    RMT out of 10:

    Foster(Rotate with Fabi)
Van Dijk / Van Aanholt / Luiz
    Salah / Jota / Richarlison / Eriksen
    Arnie / Aguero / Zaha

    Bench: Fabianski / Costa / Cedric / Wan-B
    Thanks

My first thought is that it doesn't add up, looks an excellent team, one of the best Salah teams I've seen. Obviously just monitor Zaha transfer situation/ Luiz start security but I think you're safe on both.

    Pickford, Fabianski
    Otamendi, Robertson, PVA, Cèdric, Wan-Bissaka
    Salah, Keita, Mkhitaryan, Pedro, Kenedy
    Aguero, Zaha, Tosun

    How does it look?
Should I go with arnie instead of Tosun? (Tosun will start to take pens, as Baines will get less gametime)
    Otamendi? Walker? Mendy?
    Kenedy or Neves?
I like Keita as a nice diff. He looks really great.

Think I'm nearly settled, but still not 100% convinced on Bellerin and Mahrez picks....

    Ederson (Stekelenburg)
    Robertson / Bellerin / Cedric (Tomkins, Wan-B)
Salah / Mane / Mahrez / Cairney (Stephens)
    Auba / Zaha / Arnie

    Any advice most welcome

Thanks. Makes sense to have Man U def over attack I think.
Like attacking defs for chance of assists rather than CB's. But seems like a sensible change
Now just to sort out the Mahrez / attacking City player

I’d prefer Zaha -> King, Arnie -> Zohore/Andone and upgrade Mahrez to KDB and Cairney to 6.5. But that’s just me. And KDB might not start the first few gws.

Don't get a Cardiff defender at the start. Wait and see who is first choice and if they show that they can provide clean sheets and bonus points then buy them later in the season when they have a good fixture run.
