Watchlist Update: Premium defence, midfield movement and uninspiring forwards

Our Watchlist player rankings have now been revised following the first Gameweek of the 2018/19 season.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead. We’ve already got two key examples of that this week.

With just one Gameweek played so far, fixtures are playing a slightly bigger role in our rankings than form, although there are some options whose opening weekend performances show some great promise regardless.

Goalkeepers

In goal, we’ve promoted Manchester City’s Ederson (£5.5m) to the top in light of his more appealing fixtures compared to David De Gea (£6.0m), and his superior form too. The fluctuating defensive situation at Manchester United limits De Gea’s potential and it’s a trip to Brighton and a home match with Spurs in the next two weeks. Chris Hughton’s men have scored in six of their last seven home meetings, including the Amex Stadium’s final match of 2017/18, where the Seagulls were 1-0 winners over Man United. Meanwhile, City have already kept one clean sheet away from home against a new-look Arsenal and now have a run of matches against the six most recently promoted sides to the Premier League.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) joins the goalkeeper section after his role in Crystal Palace’s win over Fulham. Not only does he have potential bargain attached to him, the Welshman’s fixtures are also very promising. After facing Liverpool at home, Palace face Watford (away), then Southampton (home), Huddersfield (away), Newcastle (home) and Bournemouth (away) in Gameweek 7.

Defenders

Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) experiences a slight rise from second to first place among defenders now that that Man City schedule look so appealing and he has demonstrated how advanced his position is at the club. The only factor that had him below Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) for Gameweek 1 was the difficulty of fixture, City away at Arsenal while Liverpool were at home against West Ham. Both players have form on their sides as they kept clean sheets, registered attacking returns and claimed bonus points on opening weekend.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m) has shot up the rankings as the ultimate value candidate. Despite his price rise, he is still the cheapest playing route into the impressive Crystal Palace defence, offering offensive returns and bonus points too – as Saturday’s win at Fulham demonstrated.

We’ve also allowed ourselves a second Palace defender in Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) considering that the left-back is in a significantly different price point to Wan-Bissaka. Van Aanholt continues to offer an advanced position and assisted Jeffrey Schlupp’s (£4.5m) goal at Craven Cottage.

Luke Shaw’s (£5.0m) goal-scoring display against Leicester City has pushed him up on the Watchlist, as another full-back offering attacking involvement.

Jose Holebas (£4.5m) is a new appearance after assisting twice and keeping a clean sheet on opening weekend. The Watford man has some short-term fixture appeal with a trip to Burnley in Gameweek 2 and a home match against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 3, before Tottenham and Man United visit Vicarage Road.

Midfielders

There were some big changes in the midfielders department. Braces for Sadio Mané (£9.5m) and Richarlison (£6.6m) see them rise into the top three, behind only Mohamed Salah (£13.0m). Both of them have Gameweek 1 form on their side as well as more appealing fixtures. The appeal of both Salah and Mané re-affirms the suggestion that doubling-up on Liverpool’s attack has serious merit.

Bernardo Silva’s (£7.5m) goal-scoring display at the Emirates Stadium pushes him up on the list of midfielders, while Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) drops after being substituted before the hour-mark. However, in both cases, the return of Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) does mean they have to carry rotation risk as a factor.

Eden Hazard (£10.5m) is another riser following his earlier-than-expected return to competitive action, in which he provided an assist for Pedro’s (£6.5m) second-half goal at Huddersfield Town. In fact, he replaced the man he assisted in Gameweek 1 ahead of Gameweek 2. However, currently he carries just the factor of form with rotation still a risk with him after the World Cup and recent comments made by Maurizio Sarri.

Dropping down as a result of those players is Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m). His performance against Man City has given him a form rating of C, and he also carries a rotation risk. However, once a trip to Chelsea is out of the way the fixtures will become a lot kinder for Mkhitaryan and the Arsenal assets.

Double-figure hauls for Roberto Pereyra (£6.0m), Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and Ruben Neves (£5.1m) pushed them onto the Watchlist, although for now that is based mostly on Gameweek 1 form.

Forwards

As you can probably see the forwards section is looking rather bleak ahead of Gameweek 2. Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) sits at the top based on the upcoming fixtures for Manchester City, but his two-point display against Arsenal means that his current form can be rated no higher than a C. Furthermore, the Argentinian also carries a rotation risk with Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) and Sterling both capable of playing his position against Huddersfield.

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) was one of the few forwards to receive a large jump after his late goal at Man United. It was a busy short spell on the pitch for the England international, so with fixtures on his side in the next six weeks he may be turned to by Fantasy managers. It’s a home match against newly-promoted Wolves next, then trips to Southampton and Bournemouth in between Liverpool and Huddersfield’s visits to the King Power Stadium.

In my opinion there is no way B Silva is a good long term option so if you don’t have him now then don’t bring him in. He did nothing attack wise vs Arsenal other than his goal.

I’ve got Mahrez and think we have to hold at least 1 more week. Longer term if you want a city Mid it has to be KDB or pick one and accept rotation happens

I'm not so sure. Look at Mane's history and it is pretty consistent regards points, goals, assists and minutes over the last four years. He's been performing at the level that Gross achieved last year, albeit Gross put in a lot more minutes.

I'm holding off for the time being. Historically Firmino offers better value for the same sort of money.

I feel happy to have done Jota to Rich before his price rise. One of my main issues as an fpl manager in the past is being stubborn and not jumping on cheapie bandwagons early enough. Glad I won't have to sit and pray Richarlison does nothing until my WC now

I think the quick moves have their advantages but they can have their annoying surprises too. If i were you i would have waited for Richarlison to be confirmed fit before making the move, which probably would have been priced out by then. But this is the nature of fpl and that makes it more interesting. 🙂

It was literally 50/50 between Rich and Jota for me in preseason, I changed to Jota the night before the deadline after having Rich the whole time. Richarlison got in far more dangerous positions, Jota looked peripheral. Of course Jota might outscore him this week, but I think going without Rich with his high ownership is risky

Before you knee-jerk in those 5.0 mids...

    Kante: 1 goal - 1 shot, 0 chances created
Jorginho: 1 penalty goal (Hazard not on pitch) - 1 shot, 0 chances created
    Neves: 1 goal & 1 assist - 3 shots, but 1 inside the box, 1 chance created

Unsustainable but still only worth monitoring.

I think Neves is worth his price if you can rotate him as a 5th midfielder. The kid is a very good midfielder who will get decent amount of points over the season and will only get better with time.

he looks like playing a similar role to Zeliński in Napoli.
      He returned 16/17 5G/4A, 17/18 4G/2A

Kante is 5' 5" and has little or no history of dribbling or taking on players offensively. Yes, he might be in the right place to mis-hit a loose ball into the goal every now and then. But he's not going to be a threat. He's there to nick the ball back quickly and feed it to someone creative.

Its relevant because he should be on your list of knee jerk players based on your criteria (except the 5.0 one). But hes not because you own him.

Ah, now 5m is a tricky spot. 6.0m defenders should be good for large end of season hauls. 4.5m defenders will get relatively few clean sheets and extras. 5m defenders will generally be in and out of their teams and not score particularly impressively over the season.

I would expect the best 5m midfielders, therefore, to outscore the best 5m defenders. Neves could be one but the reason midfielders are 5m is that at this point it's impossible to know who will be the rare exceptions.

This list is just a who's who of who scored points in GW1. It's the very definition of chasing points.

Neves, Sterling, Shaw, Pedro, Schlupp shouldn't be anywhere near this list given a mixture of difficult fixtures and possible rotation. If you want to cite form as a reason for inclusion then you at least need to give it 3 GWs.

    1. Maddi Son
      • 6 Years

Don't think Sterling belongs in that list. Proven in the Prem and amazing fixtures.

He's £11m and money can be better spent elsewhere, especially considering he's a rotation risk with Mahrez, Sane and Bilva. If he was £8.5m then fine, but he isn't.

He's the same price as Aguero and outscored him by 60 points last season. Aguero is not immune from rotation either.

Picked him for fixtures but understood when picking he was at risk of rotation. (C) on Salah until Pep proves he'll play Aguero week in week out. Too much risk of 1 pointer.

      Mendy.

Aguero could feasibly be rotated and then you have a choice GW3 whether you want to bring him in or Auba.

It's tough to go without Aguero for HUD (H) but at least with Mendy you get a guaranteed start and an almost guaranteed 6 points+.

Who replaces him? There's no direct competition for left back or left wing back. Delph is a second rate central midfielder. Sane *might* play left wing back but highly unlikely.

You can see the competition elsewhere: Mahrez and Sterling, Jesus and Aguero, Bilva and Dilva. But I can't see any legitimate competition for Mendy. He might get one or two games off, but he won't be at risk of constant rotation.

I have to admit, I know Salah is the sensible captaincy pick. With over 54% of teams having him and most captaining the Egyptian its a real air-bag pick. However, Kun still being the champions main man, and on pens, at home, against a Huddersfield. Can't believe its 2018/19 season I actually have one last opportunity to captain Sergio Kun AGUUUUEEEEROOOOO.... this is why I play FPL. It really is.

Huddersfield vs Chelsea (11.08), GW1 report from the stands.

I was hoping that it may be the right moment to play Chelsea with a new manager and new players, but the final result was not great. However, this result is not giving Town enough credit as they were decent for most of the first half and the referee was terrible. So don’t write us off yet as I’m predicting an interesting season for Huddersfield.

GK: Hamer (4.0) started in goal after great pre-season and was not at fault with any of the goals. His distribution was poor though. I can see Lössl (4.5) coming back to the team soon (he only had 1 week of preparation after late come back from WC). Based on some Wagner quotes both keepers can be fighting for the starts through the whole season, so keepers double up for 8.5M may be considered for GW 10-22 when the fixtures will be quite decent.

DF: All 3 cenre-backs (3 x 4.5) were decent in this game and should be the feature in all games against TOP6 opponents, when playing 3-5-2. All 3 (Zanka, Schindler & Kongolo) are big aerial threats on set pieces and will be in contention for BPS when Town will get a clean sheet. In games against the teams from outside big 6, Kongolo should be playing as LW with Flo Hadergjonaj as RW. Flo played quite high & again had lots of crosses, but he need to keep working on their quality to be considered as an FPL asset. Löwe (4.5) will sit on the bench when playing 4-4-2 and may even lost his spot in 3-5-2 later when Durm (4.5) will get back to fitness.

MD: Hogg (4.5) our skipper & DM is not an FPL asset and will never be as his job is to disrupt the play and fight. Mooy (5.5) was focused on the defensive side of the game but should shine in the games against lesser opposition. Billing (4.5) may be a prospect as he had a really good game and have a great long-range throw-ins in his locker. His fitness may be a problem though as he looked really tired second half. Pritchard (5.0) was the most creative force in the first half and probably should have won a penalty after Luiz challenge but was subbed after 45mins. In my opinion it was a wrong decision and he should be present in all of the remaining games of the season. One to consider for the easier fixtures a specially when his price will go down. Diakhaby (5.0) played only around 20 minutes but managed to show his lighting speed. Not an FPL prospect at the moment though.

FW: Despite the fact that Mounie (6.0) played whole game and hit the post with the header (great efficiency in the air, just need proper crosses), I’d expect his rotation with my favourite Depoitre (5.5) for the whole season. Huge & strong Belgium is a real work horse and I think, he should play against big teams and will come as second half sub against other tired opponents. Both have quite a good pre-season, and when the new signings (Mpenza, Diakhaby or Sobhi) will get in to the first team and can offer better supply, both strikers will get goals.

TLTR: Wait for price-drops and consider HTAFC players (especially defenders for the home games) from GW10 onwards.

CFC: Chelsea looked like a work in progress. David Luiz (5.5) played really good and seems to be sharing free-kicks with Alonso (6.5) who as usual was big threat in attack (hit the crossbar). Kanté (5.0) more advanced and maybe interesting proposition with Jorginho (5.0) behind him. Morata (9.0) was… well, he was exactly the same player as last season. Getting in to great positions but wasting all of the chances. Willian (7.5) probably the biggest threat in Saturdays game and worth monitoring. Hazard (10.5) in his cameo looked little bulky but was unplayable, just have in mind it was against really tired Town players.

You forgot to mention Pedro who scored a goal and is 1M cheaper than Willian.

Its because I don't think he was anywhere near Willian's level and I'd expect him rather than W to loose his place for Hazard later.

I believe he did 2 score in Championship for Us and had one or 2 FPL assists last season but he is a big threat at set pieces and I expect some more to come soon. Also he is the best defender from those 3 and most likely to get BPS with clean sheets.

Asked earlier to no response, so I'll give it another bash.

New to being a member here so not sure what is classed as a good or benchmark RMT tool score each GW?

Changes depending on each week. If you're averaging 60 points per week long term that's a good score to hit.

Perfect, thanks! I'm assuming it gets more accurate as it goes and it's conservative at first so I'm happy as I am.

Slightly worried about Liverpool assets this gameweek, I still think they'll win but not convincingly. Liverpool's style plays right into Palace's hands with the amount of possession they will likely have, big test.

I agree, not sure I see a shutout for Liverpool either.

Should I start Trent, Duffy or Peltier?

    Which one do ya prefer?

    A) Mina + 1.0
    B) Maddison
    C) Cal Wilson + 0.5 (already have Fraser)

Please give me ur thoughts, cheers 🙂

Because none of those options are that great. Silva is an attacking manager so Everton are, at the moment, weak at the back, although the signings may change that. Monitor for now. Leicester aren't a great team, fixtures are mediocre, but Maddison looked dangerous. Monitor for now. Wilson slight rotation risk, King favourable, you already have Fraser. Not worth transfer.

Everton have the best fixtures so if Silva can prove he can keep them tight at the back then Mina can be more than just a goal threat from set pieces.

I know this is a different season with different circumstances but the last two games between City and Hudds last season were scrappy at best and the one at Etihad was a goaless draw. Anything can happen but surely City to win? What do you say?

City to win by 3+ goals to nil is the obvious answer.

Yes obviously with the way City started this season. This will either be a scrappy win for City or an absolute thumping of Hudds.
