The Digest – FPL Gameweek 2

Our Gameweek 2 coverage ends with this regular look back at a player, team and discussion point that attracted our interest in the weekend’s matches.

Danny Ings got off the mark in a Southampton shirt to command our attention, while Chelsea’s early-season displays bode well for their Fantasy Premier League assets.

We also look at the rise and rise of the left-back.

The Player

After a promising 34-minute cameo at St. Mary’s on the opening weekend of the season, Danny Ings (£5.5m) backed up that performance with his first Southampton goal in the 2-1 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Ings is currently the third-most bought forward of the round, with his price tag being an obvious source of attraction.

Sergio Aguero was the only player to attempt more shots than Ings (six) in Gameweek 2 and the former Liverpool man could well have had a second goal to his name but for the sprawling reflexes of Jordan Pickford in the first half.

Ings on occasion came short from his centre-forward position to collect the ball in the Gameweek 1 encounter with Burnley, but his collective penalty box touch count should assuage any fears that he plays too deeply to represent a potent goal threat: the Saints striker already has more touches in the opposition area than the likes of Marko Arnautovic, Cenk Tosun, Troy Deeney and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the mid-price forward bracket, despite playing fewer minutes than any of the above.

Only Aguero and Mitrovic among FPL forwards have had more attempts on goal than Ings so far this season, with eight of the Southampton striker’s nine shots coming from inside the opposition box.

No player in Ings’ position has created more chances than him in 2018/19, either.

While Southampton have yet to taste victory this season, their chance creation rate bodes well for Ings’ prospects in front of goal: only Manchester City and Chelsea have carved out more opportunities than the Saints so far.

With fixtures against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Brighton to come in the next three Gameweeks (two of which are at home), Ings looks excellent value for money as a budget third (or even second) striker. His £5.5m price tag means he could easily be benched for the subsequent fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea, with his low cost allowing the freed-up budget to be spent on improving positions elsewhere.

While the Saints are well-stocked with forwards, the struggles of Charlie Austin in front of goal this season and Mark Hughes’ switch to a 4-4-2 (i.e. there is space in the starting XI for two forwards in this system) means that there should be little risk of reduced pitch-time in the short term.

The Team

The appointment of Maurizio Sarri as head coach of Chelsea in July was met with enthusiasm among Blues fans and Fantasy managers alike, given the 59-year-old’s impressive record at Napoli.

No Serie A side had scored more goals than Napoli (251) during Sarri’s three-year tenure, while their number of chances created (526) in 2017/18 was greater than not just all other Serie A clubs but also than the 20 sides in the Premier League. Manchester City were the only club in either England or Italy to have more attempts on goal than Napoli (656) in the season just gone, meanwhile.

Despite the sky-high expectations for Chelsea in the Fantasy community, the general consensus was that it would perhaps take a while for Sarri to impress his footballing doctrine on his new squad, particularly given the late nature of the veteran’s appointment (four weeks before the start of 2018/19) and that several of his squad had a brief pre-season due to their participation in the World Cup.

Sarri, indeed, warned just before Gameweek 1 that it would take “two to three months” for his side to get up to speed.

With two wins from two and six goals scored (only City have found the net on more occasions), however, “Sarri-ball” is already in full swing.

Chelsea’s next four fixtures – Newcastle United (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (h), West Ham United (a) – are appealing and their underlying attacking statistics make for encouraging reading.

Only Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have had more attempts on goal than Chelsea (37) in the first two Gameweeks of the season, though the fact that the Blues faced a more difficult fixture in Arsenal last weekend should count in their credit. Sarri’s troops, indeed, racked up 24 shots on Petr Cech’s goal over those 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have also carved out more chances and registered more successful passes in the final third than all other Premier League sides bar Pep Guardiola’s irresistible reigning champions.

All this has been done mostly without the services of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Mateo Kovacic (£6.0m), two important pieces of Sarri’s jigsaw who have been reduced to substitute appearances so far this season as they continue to build up match fitness.

Chelsea’s impressive start has translated into FPL points: Marcos Alonso (£6.6m) is the highest-scoring defender in the game, Pedro (£6.6m) has back-to-back league goals and Hazard has two assists to his name already despite only playing a total of 43 minutes.

N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), meanwhile, has suddenly and improbably become something of a budget goal threat, with Jorginho (£5.1m) now tasked with the metronomic role at the base of the midfield three. No player had more penalty box touches than Kante in the Arsenal match, while the French international has already registered four attempts on goal – all of which were from inside the opposition area – so far this season; Kante had the same number of penalty box touches (five) after ten league appearances last season as he managed in 90 minutes of action at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

No FPL midfielder had more attempts on goal (six) than Pedro in Gameweek 2, meanwhile.

While Alonso’s penalty box touches and shot count are down on 2017/18 for the opening two Gameweeks, the Chelsea left-back still represents a potent threat from his new “orthodox” left-back role: unsurprisingly, no Premier League defender has had more attempts on goal than Alonso this season.

That Alonso next faces opposition with potential problems at right-back – DeAndre Yedlin (who looks the likeliest to recover) and Javier Manquillo struggling with knocks, Isaac Hayden suspended – is all-the-more encouraging. Even Cardiff and West Ham face uncertainty in that position, given that Neil Warnock and Manuel Pellegrini have switched right-backs just two Gameweeks into the season.

The Blues’ defence is perhaps something of a concern, given that they conceded 15 attempts on goal and five big chances to Arsenal on Saturday, but with Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m) compensating with attacking returns, many will happily overlook those issues for the time being.

While many FPL managers are already investing heavily in Chelsea assets (four Blues players feature in the top ten most-bought midfielders of this round), Gameweek 3 might be the final audition for the rest of us. A subsequent double-header of Bournemouth and Cardiff at Stamford Bridge is surely too good to overlook.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Football Scout members Ginkapo and Goldman have both raised Hot Topics in recent days to question/offer explanations why left-backs are performing so exceptionally well in the first two Gameweeks of the season.

Five of the seven defenders who have scored 15 points or more so far in 2018/19 are left-backs, with another of the septet – right-back Ricardo Pereira – spending a large chunk of his time “out of position” in midfield.

The underlying statistics certainly back up their FPL returns.

The three defenders with the most attempts on goal this season are all left-backs, with Benjamin Mendy and Ben Davies (who is not even among the highest-scoring players in this position in FPL) narrowly trailing Marcos Alonso in terms of shots fired.

Half of the 12 defenders (and three of the top four) with the most penalty box touches this season are also left-sided full-backs/wing-backs, while the five defenders who have created the most chances in the opening two Gameweeks are Jose Holebas, Mendy, Davies, Ben Chilwell and Andrew Robertson – all five of them with one position in common.

It is difficult to offer a satisfactory explanation as to why this trend has developed. What should be noted, though, is that two of the three defenders who provided the most assists last season – right-backs Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker – have played just one Premier League game so far this season, with Davies and Mendy on the opposite flanks having 180 minutes to their names.

Trippier, indeed, delivered more crosses than any other FPL defender in Gameweek 2 and had as many penalty box touches as Alonso and Robertson.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have replaced a genuine wing-back in Victor Moses in the right-back position with a man who has spent several seasons at centre-half: Cesar Azpilicueta.

While the omens are good for our assets at left-back, we are only two Gameweeks into the campaign. With Trippier and Walker yet to get up to full speed but showing promising signs in their sole appearances of 2017/18, the dominance of the left-sided full-back could be a fleeting fad. Arsenal’s fixtures, for example, are set to take a turn for the better and the attack-minded Hector Bellerin – while suspect defensively – could suddenly present himself as an attractive option in the £5.5m bracket in the coming Gameweeks. Antonio Valencia has also yet to feature for Manchester United this season through injury.

At the moment though, we certainly can’t argue against Messrs Mendy, Alonso and Robertson as premium defensive picks. It would be a brave FPL manager who attempted to pre-empt the resurgence of the right-back (or, indeed, centre-half) by overlooking that aforementioned trio.

Got a bit lost in the replies but yeah my justification for getting rid of Mane and getting in Auba was essentially that Auba is the only Arsenal attacker capable of reliable returns.

Arsenal look good in attack with ridiculous fixtures till December.

Pools fixts a bit less friendly and as I've played my WC now I need Auba in asap

Never had him down as a starter for us but will no doubt play more now with the Chelsea performance.

I think he's a bit hot and cold and I wanted to make the most of those fixtures by going premium.

But his 7.0mil price vs 11mil is a big factor especially with Aguero who I can't see being dropped yet.

Not sure if you're talking about the same Arsenal here - Mkhitaryan is nailed to start, as long as he's fit!

            I'm not so sure

With the 433 we play Mkhi can play CM or winger.

More likely as a winger but has Auba/Iwobi/Ozil/Ramsey for competition.

Your 2nd sentence backs up even more so why he's nailed.

He has certainly not got Auba for competition!

The 3, particularly Iwobi and Ramsey, do not get in front of a fully fit Mkhitaryan. Every day of the week.

If his back to back 90 minute outings so far wasn't enough already, trust me when I say Mkhi is nailed at Arsenal.

                Fellow Arsenal fan?

Auba played left wing in many pre season games and I think that's where he will end up to accommodate Laca. I would be cautious..still finding out our first team and Iwobi really impressed too. Mkhi was poor in our first game.

As you can tell from my Gravatar, absolutely not! Haha

But not to worry, I watch far too much football to know what I’m talking about...

Aubameyang will more than likely move out to the wing to accommodate Lacazette. I totally agree. You must understand though that this has no bearing on Mkhitaryan’s place in the Team.

A lot of players may have been rusty in the first game and will continue to be at this early stage of the season.

After all, you are still a Team learning a new way of football under a new Manager but you have the same average squad that played under Wenger, bar Auba, Mkhi & probably Lacazette - this Summers signings were very average to say the least.

You also played a Man City side who are absolutely purring.

I think you’ll still see a few decent performances against the weaker Teams though. That’s just typical Arsenal though -flat track bullies.

It looks like I'm the only patient FPL manager around.

I'm resisting the urge to chase last week's points.

How much can we possibly know about a player after 2 game?

    Answer: barely nothing.

Every FPL podcast did a top 10 tips pod before the season started and the number 1 tip was always "PATIENCE". How quickly we forget?!

I sat on my hands and didn't get Mané or Richarlison after GW1. I stayed patient and banked a transfer.

No, the correct thing is to look at your team, address who you think the big hitters are in the foreseeable and make a decision either way.

Because it genuinely feels like I'm the only one being patient. Of course, this isn't the case, but that's how it currently feels.

So many big names in FPL are making monumental moves after just TWO games.

It is hard to go in the other direction and stick to your guns ... so I guess that is why.

                    I get that.

But then let’s have a discussion on WC’ing early or not.
Last season plenty of top managers wildcarded in GW 3.
I usually save it as long as possible, but I almost found myself wildcarding in Sunday, as I had 5 players, who would fall in price over the coming week. In the end I just made 3 transfers and saved the WC, because I came to the conclusion, that I wanted to have the WC later on.
A lot can happen - and as you say - we’ve only seen two GWs so far. For me I would much rather have it in my pocket for when injuries occur, major structure changes or even preparing for the busy time around Christmas etc.

But again, it all depends on your team and how aggressive you want to play. I can certainly see the merits of WC’ing if you started with a cheap defense, KDB, Sanchez, triple wolves or any other examples.

And it seems like you are quite confident in your own skills, so why not trust your gut and ignore the 12 podcast guys...?

But this is hugely dependant on people's teams. If people don't have Aguero, Richarlison, Mendy, etc and they think they need them, the WC is a great option.

Just saying that hits, WCs, and transfers to get 'last week's points' is bad is more misleading than anything else

I keep coming back to same point.

We literally have little to no data.

Hits, Wildcards, multiple early transfers ... these are big decisions based on stats tables with single figures in their columns!

We 100% do not have literally no data 😉

They are not based only on stats tables though. Stats tables are one of many factors

Yeah you can already see patterns just after 2 games

Knowledge of fixtures is important too. I.e. Mkhi has good stats which are maybe magnified due to the tough fixtures

Yeah you are right I could be wasting my Wildcard now in GW 2 but if it works out and I win the whole thing I could be the one writing a book next year about using a early WC to jump from 600k to Nr.1 in just 36 weeks 🙂

I think there are some big flaws in this.

The first sentence is clearly a wind up. Looking past that, good work resisting the urge! But last week's points are indicators about future performance. Equally, last week's missed points and other stats help us understand systems and how teams, players, and managers are approaching games.

So a lot can be learned after 2 games, plus pre-season, plus past seasons data. For example, we know now that Sanchez is an injury doubt. There are countless other examples of things we know now that we didn't before the season started.

The whole post, overall, seems to me to be provocative without really getting to the interesting thing you have underlying it: how much can we trust data from 2 GWs?

But you have to stop presenting it this way.

Of course he can, but he's going to keep getting the responses he does from people if he doesn't understand what it is in his posts that comes off badly for them

This post is winding people up a little, but it is not offensive and is worth ten 'who should I get, Miki or Pedro' posts which are the ones really wrecking the threads.

            Such an idiotic post.
All strategy requires flexibility . KDB, Sane, Otamendi, Vardy, Kennedy, Peltier, WanB, Kamara. All where in a good few teams a few weeks. They weren't bad picks with the information available.
But by your "patience" logic you will be lucky to get 6 starters next week.

How has Mhkitryan looked so far?

Haven't watched too much of Arsenal - obviously he racked up the points at Stamford Bridge on Sat but wanted to know how his performances have been and whether he is a viable option given the fixture change.

Is a double up with Aubameyang too much for this run?

J0E said that Mane is important as Liv pick and one of the reasons is ownership as when he scored on Monday avarage score went up a lot but...Firmino ownership is even bigger!
BHA home is quite good fixture and I really see that it could be Firmino turn to score.

Mane has the form early season as well as the ownership.

Also many of those with Mane over Firmino are likely to be higher up the rankings - and its those managers' players I'm interested in.

But I do agree it is a good fixture and Firmino has done this before - big barren run followed by scoring spree. If I owned Firmino I wouldn't sell...but for me the optimum Liverpool trio is Robertson, Mane and Salah.

The thing is I'm beefing up on mid big time, so I can't afford to beef up my defense any more than this.

Mid: Mane, Salah, Hazard, Richy, Fraser

              Attack: Aguero and Ings

Keeping. He won't play wing back very often and he's still one of the most nailed attackers in the best team in the country. His price is an absolute bargain. Mikhi is a downgrade with worse fixtures, in a worse team and likely to see less minutes on the pitch. People just like shiny new things.

          Need some advice:

          1. Have two premium defenders (Mendy and Robertson) and rotate two 4.5m defenders
          2. Have three premium defenders, no rotation (Mendy Robertson 5.5m)

Ok so agree with what is written in this article about Danny Ings but I would still have some concerns about bringing him in.

A fully fit and firing Danny Ings in a Southampton team at £5.5m looks an absolute bargain. Am sure he will be nailed on as comes with a big reputation, is Hughes own signing and he could certainly score plenty.

However the question for me is can he stay fit ? Whilst he looks good now, how many games has he actually played in the last 3 years ?

The £5.5m price creates an issue in itself as if he does need replacing and you don’t have any money ITB then there are no obvious replacements in that price bracket.

I can understand why people are going for him but personally I still prefer Wilson or Mitro at that price point.

It's not something you can not control. You're worrying about something that hasn't happened and might not even happen

They are more expensive though so think most are bringing Ings in instead of Kamara/Sorloth for their 3rd striker to strenghten the squad and you can still bench him at that price where it is tough to do the same with Mitro/Wilson atm

Agree on the risk and competition for now. Will be 3rd fwd/bench rotating with 5th mid if I get him, but the price switch factor still an issue giving me doubts.

Replace with who though at that price point ? Reminds me of the Niasse situation at Everton last season, couldn’t get rid without a hit.

Of course he could go on and score 20 goals this season, we will see.........

Will be very tough to only make keeper transfers for the next two weeks.

I don't have any problems in my squad at the moment and trying to see if the B.Silva to Mkhis worth it and how to use my 0.5.

That may be different after the weekend.

i think i made a guff with the 2 4.5 keepers, as i do EVERY YEAR!
