Gameweek 4 line-up hints in Burnley’s Europa League exit

Burnley’s exit from the Europa League may well see the Lancashire outfit become a side of Fantasy Premier League interest once again.

After a 1-1 draw with Olympiakos at Turf Moor on Thursday night, they were eliminated 4-2 on aggregate.

The players involved, and those that weren’t, have given us a fairly decent idea of who might start their Gameweek 4 meeting with Manchester United.

We have also looked ahead to the Clarets’ fixtures after the international break to assess where they may become useful to FPL managers.

Burnley 1-1 Olympiakos (2-4 on aggregate)

  • Goals: Matej Vydra (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m)

Burnley centre-back Ben Mee (£5.0m) may be at risk of rotation when Manchester United come to Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon. The 28-year-old filled the void left by suspended Ben Gibson (£4.9m) as the Clarets were eliminated from the Europa League by Olympiakos on Thursday night. He played alongside Kevin Long (£4.5m) with James Tarkowski (£5.0m) an unused substitute. Given that Mee played for the full 90 minutes it is possible that Gibson may take his place in the league for Gameweek 4.

There was a second start of the campaign for Tom Heaton (£5.0m), although it does appear that he could be the goalkeeper for cup competitions for now. After he made his comeback for the first leg in Greece last week doubt was cast over Joe Hart’s (£4.5m) place in the side but he went on to start the next league match. It is possible the same thing may happen again this week but manager Sean Dyche is still yet to field a question on the subject.

Which player will feature on the left-wing for Burnley, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) not expected to be fit in time and Robbie Brady (£5.4m) still out, remains to be seen. FPL defender Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) came on for the injured Icelandic international in a straight swap at Fulham, and would have been a shoe-in had he not played 90 minutes at left-back on Thursday night. At the very least, that firms up Stephen Ward‘s (£5.0m) place in the team for Sunday, as he was an unused substitute.

Operating on the left flank against Olympiakos was teenager Dwight McNeil (not yet in FPL), making his first start of the season. The youngster registered 405 minutes during the pre-season campaign and has impressed in his appearances so far, the most recent prior to last night being against Aberdeen. He was replaced by Chris Wood (£6.5m) in the 75th minute so has had more rest than Taylor ahead Manchester United’s visit to Turf Moor.

“(McNeil) did great against Aberdeen, and again tonight, and each time that experience level goes up. That little bit of belief gets added, and we hope he grows more belief from tonight. It’s early days, but we do like what he’s doing. And he’s there on merit. Opportunity came his way with Johann (Berg Gudmundsson) going down, and he’s taken a real step forward.” – Sean Dyche

Ashley Barnes (£5.8m) and Sam Vokes (£5.4m) were the strike pairing with Wood only featuring for 15 minutes. Barnes made way for goal-scorer Matej Vydra (£6.0m) in the 65th minute, suggesting that he should be chosen up front alongside Wood again on Sunday.

Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) was another first-team option who started the European encounter but was replaced in the 75th minute by Jack Cork (£4.9m), securing his place in Sunday’s line-up.

Perhaps also of importance was Dyche’s reaction to Burnley’s exit from the European competition. Now that the Clarets are out they should be able to get back to the basics that made them so successful both in 2016/17 and 2017/18. That may be good news for FPL managers as Burnley have a run of fairly favourable fixtures from Gameweeks 5 to 8, in Wolves (away), Bournemouth (home), Cardiff (away) and Huddersfield (home).

“I thought we dominated the game and dominated the chances. The biggest bug bear is you’ve got to take your chances. We created enough chances. I wanted our team to get back to their identify and I feel that clearly happened today. No disappointments, just learning. We were effective. I thought we had so many chances, it could easily have gone our way. It was an excellent performance, we created so many chances. Winning it was the least we deserved and we could have gone through but we didn’t take our chances. It was back to our identity, a never-say-die attitude. I’m very pleased and very proud of the players. I think the whole club will learn from this. It bodes well for the future but we’ve got to use it wisely.” – Sean Dyche

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Taylor, Mee, Long, Bardsley; McNeil (Wood 75′), Hendrick, Westwood, Lennon (Cork 75′); Barnes (Vydra 65′), Vokes.

Mendy is an excellent captain option this week who no one talks about. If he keeps a CS, gets a goal, an assist and 2-3 bonus points then thats 17/18 points. All that is possible with the way he is playing.

Chances are a little bit higher of Aguero accruing that than a defender, don't you think?

Mendy is a terrible captain option this week hence why no one talks about it. If he concedes, doesn't get a goal because he's almost never in a position to score one, and none of his crosses are successful, that's 2 points. All that is possible with the way he is playing.

Same Mendy argument was hovering around before Aguero got a hattrick and an assist 2 weeks ago and Mendy cappers lost some good ground.

Dont think it matters, he has 4 assists to his name and if Newcastle defend deep then he will essentially be playing as a winger.

If he was given the assist, and the handball goal was disallowed, and so got 2 bonus points, Mendy would have have got 17 points. He wasn't a bad captaincy pick, and he nearly proved it. Actually, 8 points is no disaster, and he outscored Kun in 2 out of 3 GWs.

Lots of ifs. Aguero hit the post many times that game and all the other games, with that logic, Aguero could have had many more points.

My opinion is that city defense always looks like conceding easily. Conceding to Huddersfield and Wolves show it too.

If you only want to count the points on the table, then Mendy is beating Aguero. But you know there's more to it than that.

                      • 8 Years

Just checked, and Aguero did not hit the post in that game nor the first game, certainly not "many times". So with that logic, Aguero wouldn't have "many more points".

It's easy to use the "Lots of ifs" rebuttal any time you see an if statement without judging the quality of the If. In this case there are two Ifs. One is an assist which was touch-and-go about whether it would be given, the other is a CS, which I would expect more than 20-30 times against Huddersfield if they were to play each other 38 times this season. If either of these events happened, Mendy would have also been gifted 2 bonus points. This follows as a result. It's not a a separate if-statement.

The point is that it was very close to a high score on this day, so you should not dismiss him as a captain just because another player got a hattrick on that day.

You were talking up Mendy saying he almost got 17 points, and one of the reasons being City conceding a poor goal. Like that's a valid reason? He's a defender and they conceded. Deserved

Dude you are hard to talk to. I can't be bothered to argue. Suffice it to say that I expect City to concede less than a goal a game this season, especially against weaker sides.

A clean sheet is never guaranteed is what I always say. Perhaps you should manage your expectations.

You're looking at their average over the season, when for captaincy, you have to only look at their next particular game.

For instance, a lot of people here and on reddit (not you) were talking up Mendy captaincy that week saying it's almost a guaranteed clean sheet vs Huddersfield and I was arguing with all of them saying there's no such thing. A team can be defensively strong in a game and still concede 1 goal (can be poor, or lucky like you said).

Clean sheets are a bit harder to predict than predicting Aguero to score against Huddersfield. And captaincy is more about going with what is the easiest to call, than who'll get the highest score.

P.S: I didn't even captain Aguero that week.

It's just probability. I limited it to "weaker sides" rather than the whole season, and above I limited it to my expectations against Huddersfield specifically.

This idea that CSs are somehow more spontaneous than goals is bogus. So many people refuse to captain a defender or play with more than 3 defenders because of the hope that a player can score until the final minute, as if the probability of a goal changes because it's a goal and not an assist. No the probability is the probability. A CS wasn't guaranteed, but imo it was likely. Aguero scoring 2 goals or more was less likely imo.

I captained him gw2 and felt very hard done by. Should’ve had a 3rd assist and 2 bonus. You wouldn’t of expected him to concede.

I probably won’t do it again and I was so annoyed I didn’t just opt for Aguero but it’s still a good idea

Tough one. City will suspect that Newcastle will play really deep and compact so opt for Aguero and Jesus up front like against Huddersfield, therefore he could be benched again. I'd give him about a 40% chance of starting.

Do you really think robertson will start league games next month ?
Those games are really awful. And they play 3 matches in a week!
Robertson will start CL games which is more important

Klopp already said he will make changes and many of his key players could be at risk

Hodgson coy ahead of Saturday: "We've got most of our players available. I think I'll keep the team news close to my chest for now, you'll find out tomorrow..."

James Tomkins [calf] is the biggest concern. Wan-Bissaka is back after his ban.

Ahh the common excuse when losing to a lower league team, the B team. Still, let's see if they can try and play a little less negative, but even when they do, they just simply don't have the quality to be beating many of the teams in the prem this year. Sorry for the reality check.
