Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

He might if he remains fit but I prefer Vardy as he averages 170+ points a season and I expect him to score 20 goals this season.

    Give me your thoughts please
On WC and my front 7 currently looks like this:
Hazard Dilva maddison fraser (lerma 5th)
    Aguero vardy mitrovic

    3.5 itb
    Best way to spend it?
Don't want mane and will get salah after gw8

    A) upgrade fraser (to alli?)
    B) Dilva to sterling
    C) mitro to lacazette
    D) your suggestion?

I find it interesting to hear the reaction by people to the Cardiff match. I watched the whole thing and thought Arsenal looked the worst I’ve seen them in a long time. No Mhki/Bellerin link up seemed like a real loss down that rich side. People all over Laca but honestly I thought he looked really bad for 90% of that match...which was against Cardiff...yeah Cardiff.

No. They priced him just right by the looks of it. Thats why people are discussing whether to stick or twist after serving close to 7ppgm the first 4 weeks. 13m is perfect.

That was my take preseason. Ultimately I ended up with Salah because I didn't totally trust Aubameyang or Sanchez (although I did heavily consider both, bullet dodged there) and I thought that Sterling/De Bruyne/Hazard/Kane/Lukaku wouldn't be back from the World Cup for a couple weeks. However, I've kind of changed my mind and think Salah will be worth his price tag. I can see the appeal of dropping him short term because of fixtures but I don't see any way he doesn't score at least 25 goals. 8 points per game is in reach once again IMO.

      Why 8ppg?

      1. WesMantooth
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Because theres usually allways a couple of premium options delivering 6-7 points per match 230-260pts, and a lot of premiums and midpriced will offer around 5 pts pr match (190).

Like Kane last season, Salah needs to outperform the others, or there needs to be very few players getting 5-7 pts pr game, or the players performing similarly or better needs to be very cheap.

Salah looks just as threatening as last season though, so would definately back him to get 7-8pts pr game.

    6. Woy of the Wovers
      • 13 Years

8ppg is 304pts. If I thought Salah could do that I'd be telling everyone I know to sell him now. Selfish reasons of course

Fabregas was priced at 12.0 some seasons ago after scoring nearly 100 points less than Salah last year...

      1. WesMantooth
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

The season prior to getting that pricetag, cesc got 15 goals and 15 assists in 27 games. 12.0 pricetag is reasonable for a mid delivering those figures. Fabregas got 205 points on FPL that season. That's 7.6pts pr game. Salah had an average of 8.4 last season. Fab was not wrongly priced.

I have been thinking that with Salah going down in price and Mane going up, that I might keep Mane in my WC team but bank the money for an instant upgrade. This allows me to monitor the situation another week before making a decision and maybe make some extra money at the same time.

If Mane does well then I haven't lost the money invested in Mane and if Salah does well it won't take hits to get him back in. If they both do well I can also make the swap with Hazard to keep both without having to pay extra to get Mane back.

Problem is that we currently are not sure if 2 Liverpool attackers are needed with their fixtures and Hazard is looking very good. So dropping one for Hazard makes sense, but Salah is the most dangerous and Mane is the one going up in price. An extra week of data and another 0.2 in the back would be useful.

By doing this you won’t be utilising your long term wildcard team enough as if you do decide to stay without Salah you will then want to make multiple transfers to upgrade in other areas with the extra 3m so you waste the valuable unlimited transfers that your wildcard gives you.

      1. Oven Glover
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Sterling and/or Hazard are options on a WC that makes it quite easy to get Salah back with 2 FTs. You get problems if you spread the funds around too much in your 15 man squad. Easy swap from Haz & Sterling to Salah & DSilva for example.

      2. KickIt
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

        Current WC team is:
        Ryan • Hamer
        Alonso • Mendy • Robertson • Wan-Bissaka • Doherty
        Hazard • Salah • Maddison • Pedro • Billing
        Agüero • Mitrovic • Wilson

Could have Mane instead with 3.5 ITB, then I could get Salah in one go for cheaper if he drops. If Mane keeps on delivering and Salah doesn't I can upgrade Mitro or Wilson to Vardy or Lacca.

      3. OverTinker
        • 5 Years

Agreed thats the problem. So on wildcard I have transferred Salah for Hazard before price rise and hoping for Mane to increase twice and Salah to drop atleast one. Then Salah for Mane in the wild card. I think thats how I can get some extra value

I intended the same but am suggesting to not swap Salah back directly but bank the money and wait one more week. More info and more money made. At this stage the Mane Vs Salah debate is not clear, although I think Salah is the one needed. One more week info is handy so this buys some time.

That’s the logic if no-Salah is a long term plan, but if it’s just for Liverpool’s tough short-term fixtures you need to be able to get him back with two transfers.

    3. Woy of the Wovers
      • 13 Years

You're playing with fire and it's Salah v Hazard you should be comparing. Hazard matches Salah you're fine - but cursing the 2.5m left unused in the bank. Salah beats Hazard by 1ppg you put that down to price and spend the money elsewhere.

Salah out scores Hazard by 2ppg - you're leaking points.

To be honest I expect to keep Hazard so most likely I want him and Salah long term, means Mane is the probably the one to go. Stats say the same. This just makes me some money and gives me one more week before dropping Mane.

    Hart - Hamer
    Alonso, Robertson, Mendy (WBissaka, Peltier)
    Salah, Mane, Mkhi*, Walcott* (Hogg)
    Aguero, Zaha*, Wilson

    1ft and 0.5itb

Before the last week I was very pleased with the team but I'm a little worried now. Mkhi benched, Zaha&Walcott injured.

Question 1: Is this for wildcard?

Question 2: Is it too stupid (or risky) to save a transfer and after gw5, make 2 or 3 changes?

Is Firmino to Jesus worth a punt?
Firmino playing internationals, Jesus not. Jesus has better fixtures than Liverpool. Would play Jesus and Aguero double City attack in easy games and if Aguero is rested I’m covered. Also a decent differential and low ownership. Think Jesus could deliver soon in next few games, xG stats are decent.
