Suspensions

Which FPL players are nearing a suspension?

Those who keep an eye on our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Fantasy Premier League players – and indeed have already resulted in a suspension for one FPL favourite.

Jose Holebas (£4.9m) became the first Premier League player of 2018/19 to accumulate five yellow cards and will now miss Watford’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 9 a result.

The occasion of the Greek left-back’s suspension and that it’s the international break seems a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

With the yellow card amnesty not until after the completion of Gameweek 19 (after which the threshold moves up to ten yellow cards), then those FPL players already sitting on three and especially four cautions have a long way to go before they are in the clear.

For ease of reading, only the players highlighted in bold below are the ones walking the disciplinary tightrope.

Currently Banned

Holebas has worryingly reached the “magic” five yellow card mark quicker than he did in 2016/17, when the veteran full-back went on to rack up 14 cautions in just 33 appearances.

The Watford left-back’s five bookings have come from just ten fouls but are illustrative of his tendency to take drastic measures when caught out of position after bombing forward.

As well as Holebas, Watford have another player unavailable for the trip to Molineux.

Christian Kabasele (£4.5m) was dismissed after collecting two yellow cards in the 4-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday and will now serve a one-match suspension in Gameweek 9.

The absence of Kabasele and Holebas could mean promotions off the bench for Adrian Mariappa and Adam Masina (both £4.3m) at centre-half and left-back respectively, though the Hornets are well-stocked for defenders and could even drop midfielders Etienne Capoue (£5.0m) or Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.5m) into the backline.

Cardiff City are currently appealing Joe Ralls‘ (£4.8m) controversial dismissal for serious foul play in the 1-0 defeat to Spurs, but if unsuccessful, Victor Camarasa (£4.5m) could move back into the centre of midfield for the three fixtures in which Ralls is suspended. Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) is nearing a return to fitness and could also step in.

Finally, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) will sit out Leicester City’s next two fixtures after picking up his second red card of the season in the defeat to Everton on Saturday. Jonny Evans (£4.9m) looks to be the likely beneficiary, though Caglar Soyuncu (£5.0m) is an alternative.

On Four Yellow Cards

Three players are on four yellow cards, though only one of them will likely be of any interest to FPL managers. Central midfielders Etienne Capoue (£5.0m) and Harry Arter (£4.9m) are both owned by less than 0.5% of Fantasy bosses, but another caution for either player would result in a ban and be a big blow to their respective clubs following their early-season performances.

Zanka (£4.5m), however, is owned by over 230,000 FPL managers and those Fantasy bosses who are sitting on the Danish centre-half for Huddersfield Town’s forthcoming run of good fixtures between Gameweeks 10 and 15 (one of the best in the league on our Season Ticker) will be hoping the towering stopper can dodge another caution over the coming weeks.

Only one FPL defender has committed more fouls than Zanka this season, however.

On Three Yellow Cards

There are 18 FPL players sat on three cautions which, although still two yellow cards from a suspension, doesn’t leave them with a lot of leeway considering the cut-off date for a one-match suspension is after Boxing Day.

Defenders

There are several high-profile FPL assets among the seven defenders on three yellow cards. Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m), Harry Maguire (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m), owned by 21.1%, 15.7% and 10% of Fantasy bosses at the time of writing, are currently sat on three yellow cards and while that fact is unlikely to prompt mass sales among existing owners, it is something to consider for those FPL managers who are contemplating a move for one of the above trio.

Maguire’s Leicester City indeed top our Season Ticker from Gameweek 10 onwards, while there will be plenty of interest in Liverpool’s watertight defence (five clean sheets in eight matches) and Alexander-Arnold with the Reds’ fixtures turning for the better after the October international break.

Matthew Lowton (£4.8m), Sokratis Papasthopolous (£5.2) and Southampton wing-backs Ryan Bertrand (£4.9m) and Cedric Soares (£4.4m) complete the septet of sinning stoppers.

Midfielders

There are nine midfielders who are just two bookings away from suspension, but there are few Fantasy bosses who will be affected.

Central midfielders Granit Xhaka (£5.3m), Philip Billing (£4.5m), Mario Lemina (£5.0m), Dale Stephens (£4.4m), Dan Gosling (£4.9m), Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) and Oriel Romeu (£4.4m) are amongst the group, with any high ownership (Stephens is the most popular, sitting in 5.4% of squads) likely to be for their budget price tag and suitability as “bench fodder”.

Having racked up eight assists in 2017/18 and proven that he is a threat at direct free-kick situations this season, Xhaka is a cut above the other budget buys listed above.

Any worried owners should be slightly reassured after the elevation to the first team of Lucas Torreira (£4.9m), who has helped unburden the Swiss midfielder from some of his defensive workload. After ten fouls and three yellow cards in the first four league fixtures of the season, Xhaka has committed only four offences and stayed out of the referee’s notebook completely in the last four Gameweeks.

Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m), meanwhile, has lost his place in the West Ham midfield in recent weeks and is only owned by 0.1% of FPL managers in any event.

Matt Ritchie (£5.9m) also has limited appeal from a Fantasy perspective but his Newcastle side are about to embark on an excellent run of fixtures in which they play none of the “big six” in the coming ten Gameweeks.

The Scotland international has a hat-trick of yellow cards to his name, however, and only three midfielders have committed more fouls than him this season.

Forwards

There are only two strikers on three yellow cards but both feature in the top five of most-owned FPL forwards: Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m).

Zaha’s three yellow cards have damaged his score on the Bonus Points System this season as they have all come in fixtures in which he has scored.

With five tough matches coming up (Palace sit bottom of our Season Ticker), Zaha is currently the most-sold forward of Gameweek 9 and it will be interesting to see if he collects a fourth yellow card during this daunting period of matches – that would perhaps deter investors for when the Eagles’ fixtures turn for the better in Gameweek 14.

Kane’s booking against Cardiff City on Saturday came in the incident that led to Joe Ralls’ dismissal, while his two previous cautions against Newcastle and Manchester United were for bad fouls.

While his current yellow card count won’t be too big of a concern just yet for existing owners, a fourth yellow card picked up over the next six fixtures would certainly influence the FPL market ahead of Spurs’ excellent run of matches from Gameweek 15-21.

Most Fouls

Below are position-by-position tables of the FPL players who have committed the most fouls in the league this season, highlighting the repeat offenders who are perhaps likeliest to pick up cautions going forward and cost their owners points or hamper their scores on the Bonus Points System.

Wildcarding and thinking of going with this lot at the back...

    Mendy: Walker: Alonso: Robertson: Trippier

There's only 10 fit and regular players operating at over 6 ppg right now and this lot make up half of them so it makes some numerical sense.

The rest of the team are made up of bit part players (Hazard, Lacazette, Ederson, Fraser, Siggy, etc, etc).

i think that could be a bad idea, but only in my opinion, there's every chance it could pay off, but that is far too heavy for my liking in defence.

      B) TAA & Arnie

I don't think I could play 5 at the back constantly. Wishing for 0-0s the whole time would be depressing

Fair doos. Playing 5-2-3 or 5-3-2 just would feel strange for me. Was always a 3-4-3 guy until this season.

Certainly different. I had my best season when I doubled up on Alonso and Azp despite everyone recommending to downgrade one.

In theory this could work but areas that it falls down are:

Captaincy options- you'll be captaining defenders some weeks which I don't like

There are playing defenders around the 4m mark who are great value. You won't be able to tap into this value and your bench will be more expensive as a result. The cheapest playing midfielders are 4.5m and all crap. The cheapest playing forwards are 5.5m and above. As a result your bench will be much more expensive every week which will in turn affect the budget you can spend on your playing team.

You should run it through the RMT tool before doing it. I'd be interested in seeing the results

In my opinion, where is the fun in that?

Surely you’ve got to enjoy playing this game which generally doesn’t involve spending all your money on defenders.

      Live a little 😉

Look at the top defenders. Points haven’t come from CS alone but from assits/goals too. Hence why those at the top jumped on Doherty @ 4.4

I’m not saying it won’t work, I’m sure it will as the value in defence is great.

I just can’t get excited about having 5 x 6m+ defenders in my team.

Where's the fun in template formation that everyone else is playing

I see the fun in his venture and if he can find a successful, reliable captain then it may be fruitful

I guess we all look at fun in different ways.

For some reason I can’t get my little head around defenders being fun, never have and never will. I just love it when one of my players scores 🙂

Why not go with VvD instead of tripper. He may not have the attacking returns, but he's absolutely nailed, Liverpool look like they're gonna keep a clean sheet pretty much every game and their fixtures are way better than Spurs. He's also a touch cheaper

VVD is the worst choice Lpool asset after Robertson and TAA. Trippier offers attacking potential

As noted, he doesn't offer the lilklihood of attacking returns. But Spurs have a tricky run, Liverpool have an incredible run. Trippier and TAA both have some doubts over them. VvD does not, and I'm guessing his bench is weak. The case for VvD over Trippier and TAA between now and 15 is more compelling that previously.

    Fabianski
    Alonso - Robertson - Trippier
    Hazard - Salah – Maddinson - Fraser -
    Mitrovic - Aguero - Ings

Foster –Doherty- AWB - Hojbjerg -

Took a-4 to get Doherty and Hojbjerb for Peliter and Costa. Wild Card still in hand. Thoughts? Rank 78K after being 18K two weeks ago. Haven't got a captain pick right all year.

Hola everybody! Doing my wildcard whilst on holiday in Mexico. It seems to me my wildcard rests on one final decision.

Mendy allowing Ryan and Pat rotating keepers

      Or..

      Pat and Alonso.

Team currently, feel free to pick apart.

      Pat stek
      TAA Robertson Alonso Doughty AWB

      Rich Haz Maddy Mane Puncheon

      Laca Aguero Mitro

I don't like rotating keepers, as seldom works for me. So would pick one of Pat/Fab and Alonso/Mendy.
But the rotating option is also ok

Yeah I agree, this is the first season without rotator. Just want to bring in Ryan when Pat has a hard fixture. Am swayed to keeping Alonso and wait to see how Mendy performs. Thanks for the response.

Lots of people give out about the IB citing boredom and the risk of their players getting injured as just some of the reasons.

Personally i love watching international football and getting a look at players that i don't see every week in the PL and it is also a great way to scout players in the PL that are playing without worrying about not owning them and losing out on fpl points.

In my opinion if you are not interested in some of the fixtures listed below then you are just not that into football.

          Poland vs Portugal
          Belgium vs Switzerland
          Croatia vs England
          Netherlands vs Germany
          Ireland vs Denmark
          Poland vs Italy
          Russia vs Turkey
          Spain vs England
          France vs Germany
          Ireland vs Wales
          Belgium vs Netherlands
          Brazil vs Argentina
          Peru vs Chile

Maybe if there was some kind of International fixture fantasy game it would help calm managers cravings for fpl during these breaks?

Of course they do,It is a good way for international managers to try out new tactics and players that they might not risk doing under competitive scenarios.

If international players did meet up with each other for long periods how would anyone expect them to play like a team and build an identity,it is bad enough in lots of cases as it is.

Ok the games and tournament have no real meaning to me, or my fantasy decisions, injuries excepted. If I have nothing better to do may watch one, but just not very interested in international friendlies or the competition. I'd rather they binned it to give players more rest.

Do you think there is space for a international fixture fantasy game that would make these breaks more interesting for fpl managers?

Maybe, although with WC + CL + PL fantasy the average person may be oversaturated this year. Space for fantasy games follows space for real life games, and I just think there are too many real life games over certain periods. Perhaps my view's increasingly skewed by interests in FPL, but hearing manager's talk about the effect on players and therefore club performance makes it a trade-off I don't favour.

Don’t think people on here like football. Most seem distraught if their player didn’t score in what was otherwise an interesting game. They’d rather moan about bonus points than enjoy the game.

Agreed but sometimes that fpl thing in the back of your mind can take the shine of a great game somewhat and at least you do not have to worry about that specter watching these internationals.

I love international tournaments but with champions League (and even premier League) internationals are no longer the pinnacle. The players don't seem bothered, reflected in endless withdrawals. I think international football is on the decline (tournaments aside) and I don't see that trend reversing anytime soon. I think my FPL and non FPL friends are pretty well feeling similarly indifferent about it all.

Guys I did Richarlison in for Fraser yesterday; hoping that Rich will continue playing through the middle and to catch him before price rise. What do you think, Fraser probably has slightly better fixtures, but Rich's possibleOOP potential edged it

Frazer may be injured plus saves you a transfer when Bournemouth's fixtures change. I just did the exact same thing on a wildcard.

I usually wait in international breaks but brought in Richa for Pereyra Sunday night. One I really wanted, one I really didn't. It's a calculated gamble I guess, and 4 points can remedy a problem if it arises. Good luck to us both!

                Which would you choose?

                A) Mendy & Ings/Jimenez
                B) TAA & Arnie

A bit of uncertainty surrounding Mendy and TAA however I reckon they are both safe. TAA and Arnie cause of fixtures basically. Ings/Jimenez have a real mixed back coming up, if you'll be playing both every week B should get you more points.

As a Liverpool fan i feel this is our best back 4 for how we play and TAA has great delivery from set pieces to and with Milner fitness doubt he will be on for them.

Unlikely right. I think opinion is that change was tactical as Gomez more defensive than TAA, however it did seem to work so he could see some games.

We've definitely lacked options like KDB this season, upper mid-priced mids who are there for higher than average returns but aren't quite captaincy material. Alli, Eriksen, Pogba, Dilva etc aren't firing yet, Mane looked to be firing but stopped with the harder fixtures.

The points for certain players in the first 8 weeks of this season are remarkably similar to what they got in the first 8 weeks last season:

                2017 2018
                Aguero: 52 52
                Sterling: 50 50
                Kane: 47 45
                Salah: 46 42
                Firmino: 35 34

Last year the points for the next 8 weeks were:
                Salah: 78
                Kane: 47
                Sterling: 41
                Firmino: 33
                Aguero: 27

So should we all be selling Aguero and buying Salah?

If you mean have I just picked out certain players the answer is yes. I could have included KDB and Erikson but they're not worth considering right now. I just thought it was interesting, that's all.

Hazard only started 2 of the first 8 games last season.

At this time last year he had 0 goals and 0 assists. Approximately 8 points by my reckoning. So overall his output is slightly up on last season.

I've just checked the stats in the members area and it seems last year Mane got 3 goals and 0 assists in GWs 1-8, compared to 4 goals and 0 assists this year.

                Patricio / Fabianski

                Haz, Salah, Maddison, Rich (4.5mid)
                Kun, Mitro, Wilson

Getting Arnie for Wilson in 2gws, and keeping faith in Salah for the next GWs.

I see Arnie as a must have come GW11 but I think you're right to stick with Wilson til then.

I have aspirations to also do Alonso/Madi ---> Balb/KdB around wk13 but they are nothing more than a glint in my eye at this stage. Lots of things need to come together for that to happen such as Alonso not kicking on and KdB coming in and firing. Thing is I can see that occurring.

                  Consider this alternative.

                  Pat / Fab
                  Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Doherty, Balbuena
                  Haz, Salah, Rich, Fraser, 4.5
                  Kun, Arnie, Ings / Jimenez

It means playing 4 at the back and Doherty and Balbuena rotate alongside Pat and Fab, and Fraser and Ings / Jimenez also rotate.

You lose Mitro but you get to have Doherty points and a decent bench.

Fraser / (Ings or Jimmy) rotation actually works.

Relying on rotation can be a trap though. Ideally I'd like attacking players who I would want to play every match.

A couple weeks ago I had my heart set on Mitro as a set and forget option. Now I'm dabbling.

Sounds like Fraser not picked up new injury but Scotland finess test more rigorous than perhaps Bournemouth. Clearly been carrying hamstring issue which has not prevented him playing for Bournemouth but Scotland not willing to risk.

What you guys think about this moves long term,i think this is good move long term but not sure

                Mane + Bennett + Kamara > Mendy + 4.9mid fodder(Kenedy) + Arnie (-4) will leave me with 0.0 ITB

                Ryan/Button
                Alonso/Trippier/TAA/AWB/Bennet
                Salah/Hazard/Mane/Richa/Ward
                Aguero/Mitro/Kamara

So it will be from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 with one more fodder who can play.

I think it's a very good move, however I would hold off a couple of weeks. Mane has two plum fixtures, Arnies turn excellent in GW11. It will also allow you to see if Pep choses Mendy or Delph. I think Mendy has it, but if Delph starts one of the next two I don't think Mendy is an option any more.

you are already in an ideal position to profit from liverpools kind run.
trippier to mendy if you are desperate for mendy
mitro to arnie wk11 seems fine, albeit a bit sideways

                    Good tips,considered Mitro > Arnie but i have 0.0 ITB...cant do Trippier > Mendy again 0.1 short.
Maybe just do Ward > Obiang to gain 0.1 and playing mid and go from there.

Who to sell Lukaku for with 0 ITB. Other strikers are Kane and Wilson

                A) Laca

Obviously Laca/Vardy/Bobby are better, but im not sure they are 2.5m better and from all the configurations ive tried that money is more impactful in defence/mid
Wilson to arnie is a transfer later on

A is a pretty obvious winner for me. Doherty is a better pick than bennet and Liverpools upcoming fixtures are great. Mendy might not even have his spot nailed with Sané playing great. Pep only got room for one player on the left flank so the possibility of him playing both at the same time is pretty minimun.

Have had Silva and Maddison from GW1 and enjoyed their splattering of points but think it is time to board the Hazard train (finally).

Interesting choice on Laporte. Obv seems nailed and their defense seems to be tightening up but fixtures are up and down. Maybe downgrade Fab to 4.0 and get Mendy?

Should also consider the possibility that Medy might not be as nailed as he was pre-injury. With Sané playing well on the wing we might se a heavier rotation between him and mendy

Definitely think Robertson is a must with their upcoming fixtures. Your options to get him in are slim so I would probably do it. Especially with Trips rotation risk, upcoming fixtures and Spurs propensity to concede.

Lose Salah and see what type of team it gets you.

How is this WC team ?

                Pat/Hamer
                Luiz/TAA/Doh/ AWB/ Dunk
                Salah/Haz/Rich/Maddison/Masuaku
                Kun/Laca/Mitro

0 itb. Lite defense but mid/off can bring home the bacon
                Advice appreciated!!

I would downgrade Laca to Wilson to upgrade your defence

It's not officially over 100. Plenty of wildcards too.

Kind of caught between 2 stools at the moment, my team looks too good to WC but can't afford Salah back even for a minus 4 next gw.

                Patricio
                Robertson Mendy Alonso
                Richarlison Mane Maddison Hazard
                Arnautovic Kane Mitrovic.

Think I might just ride the next game out and then do a mini WC for gw 10, or else I'll just swap Kane to Aguero for next gw. It's not ideal but doesn't seem like I need to WC, I'm 80k OR and feel I will know for definite when to go. Anyone else in a similar predicament?

Would you even want Salah? awful big risk for 13m thus far. I prefer Mane, team looks stellar as it is, ver similar to mine actually.

I agree . You’re team looks fine. Wouldn’t tear it up for salah. So what if he scores one goal a game with no bonus (7-8 points). You do have robbo and mane for the fixtures as well

If you are on wildcard i dont see why you would feel the need to tear up a great team structure for a 12.something player that (this far) havent been close to living up to the pricetag. I have Salah but thats mostly because i've had him all season and getting rid of him would be maddness with the upcoming fixtures.

Similar to mine except doherty in place of mendy. I hit the button. Gonna utilize this fixture shift

Just having a tinker - hows this for a 4-4-2 KdB team

                Pat/Fab
                Alonso Mendy TAA Doh/Balb
                Haz KdB Mane Richi (4.5)
                Aguero Arnie (Jimmy)
