Captains

Captain Sensible – Aguero the runaway poll leader in Gameweek 9

It’s a welcome return for our Captain Sensible article as the return of Fantasy Premier League action is now very close.

The second international break of the season has given us plenty of time to weigh up our skipper decisions for Gameweek 9.

As per usual, Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah all figure in the debate. We’ll be looking at the results of our poll as well as the underlying data behind the options themselves, their teams and their respective Gameweek 9 opposition.

Captain Poll

Not for the first time this season, Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) is the runaway leader of the captain poll. At the time of writing, the Manchester City striker boasts a 44.69% share of the vote and was considerably clear of second-placed Eden Hazard (£11.3m).

The Chelsea man has just under 13% backing thus far. Both he and Aguero may have been boosted by the fact that Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) is an injury doubt for Gameweek 9 when it came to the voting process.

Hazard especially has also been more reliable than the Egyptian this season and leads his rival on goal involvements by a score of ten to five. That is why the easier fixture for Salah is not so enticing, even if Hazard is facing Manchester United.

Interestingly, Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) is still yet to trouble this season’s big three. He sits fourth in the vote with a little under 7% of the votes in our poll, despite blanking in just one of his Premier League appearances in 2018/19 and outscoring Aguero in every home match. That could indicate that many of those who participated in the poll are struggling to fit him into their squads given their current structure and are looking elsewhere for the captaincy.

Alexandre Lacazette‘s (£9.7m) recent form has him hot on Sterling’s trail in the captain poll. He currently edges Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) 4.55% share of the vote with a backing of 4.63% at the time of writing.

Surprisingly, up next is Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) whose 2.48% score is nearly more than double that of Alexandar Mitrovic (£6.9m), Callum Wilson (£6.4m) and Richarlison (£6.8m).

Is it worth -8 to get Salah?

Would mean selling Kane & Maddison for Salah and Arnie this week.

    RP :/ 2FT 0.0ITB. WC left.

    GKP: Foster (Hamer)
DEF: Robertson, Doherty, Alonso, Mendy (Wan-Bissaka)
MID: Salah (V), Fraser, Hazard, Richarlison (Maddison)
    FWD: Jiménez, Agüero (C) (Ings)

Fraser (when is the presser?) & Ings > Højbjerg, Mitro
Both Fraser and Ings good pics IMO, so could backfire. The latter is SOT's "main man" and on pens. Less bench headache though.
Good moves if Fraser is out? Other suggestions, please? Cheers.

Tinkering with possible wild card team to get in on Salah and City hauls (hopefully). Big guestion is whether to go with Sterling or Agüero - kiind of scared gping without Kun afte reading the Captain Sensible article.... But then I kind of like my team with Sterling in, so which would you prefer:

    The Aguero team:

    Patricio Hamer
    Robertson TAA Alsonso Doherty WBA
    Salah Hazard Maddison Richarlison Stephens
    Agüero Mitro Ings

    or the Sterling team:

    Patricio Hamer
    Robertson TAA Lascelles Doherty WBA
    Salah Hazard Sterling (Rich/Maddi) Stephens
    Vardy Mitro Ings

    possibly changing Rich/Maddi + Lascelles -> Mendy + Fraser/Knockaert

I guess its not much to choose between Sterling and Kun, so really depends whether Vardy will deliver. And with the Agüero team, it's easier to switch another in form striker.

    Cheers!

I've gone off Kun, Pep really really likes taking him off after 60 mins, and that severely dents his captain potential, also considering he's an 11+m player he should be playing 90 for me

If that trend contiinues, I tend to agree. But two weeks rest now, and Sterling might be rested after playing 180 minutes in IB. So for this GW only, I'd lean towards Kun, but on a wild card one has to look at the longer term.

Aguero team for me, although not sure on doubling up Robertson and TAA, Sterling team feels light up top, not convinced Vardy will deliver consistently.

Vardy in for the fixtures, and he has been quite consistent so far this season. Robertson couild also become Mendy, but I see a string of cs's for Liverpool for their easy run, and TAA such good value.

I'm torn here - have two options:

I want to make Kane and Fraser out for free to:

    A) Salah and Wilson: (c) Salah in 9&10, Kun in 11

    B) Sterling and Wilson: (c) Kun in 9&11, Hazard in 10

Sterling would mean no Pool attackers but also mean that I can easily upgrade Trippier to Robo/Mendy or Wilson to Arnautovic in following weeks (Want Wilson for next 2/3 games)

    ?

      • 9 Years

Play the slightly longer game. Sterling is on fire and gives you infinitely more options across your team. If Salah was a clear captain choice then he might be worth entertaining, but he's not. Which makes him a 12.7m brick

      1. Atimis
        • 7 Years

Yah, Sterling seems to be more maverick move at first but in fact seems to be more logical one 😀

Salah will probably return points, you have to accept this. But it is likely sterling will return anywhere + or - 50% of Salah returns. Salah owners will be struggling to take advantage of emerging properties precisely at a time when certain teams have big up or downturns in their fixtures.

I'm going to buy the bullet and accept I won't get his returns because I think it's best for my team over 3-5 weeks

We will see who is right! We've had 2 weeks to debate this. I'm hopping on the Salah train once we have the expected confirmation that he's fit from Klopp.

I think it'll be very difficult to actually measure who is right unless there is a stupendous range (e.g Salah hits a hatrick, Sterling blanks and Kun disappoints as captain). I think it's more likely the margins will be finer and it'll be trickier to tease out the overall benefit of with /without

    I have a question 🙂

When people answer on this great site, do they often (subconsciously perhaps) answer based on their own team trying to convince themselves that they have made the right choice?

I understand that their team is players they often like but I also think when it’s a close call people just say their own players even if they are not fully convinced themselves. I think the same happens with Captain picks

No. Most of the time my team isn’t set up how I’d like it 100%. I try to think of others choices as if they were my own. E.g would I want to make that transfer, would I prefer to have A or B if you see what I’m saying.

Great question, no doubt human nature will want to give an answer that re-confirms your decisions, however if I see something that I feel is either wrong or needs debating I will often answer a question with the hope to provoke a discussion.

It's a good question...you see it more in pre-season when people are posting RMTs, you'll see someone reply to a RMT and say something like 'change these two players to these two players' and then when they post their RMT below, it's basically the same team.

But at this stage of the season I think the regular posters are knowledgeably enough to give impartial advice.

Sorry but, you simply cannot win with the 2 default negative categories round here:
I see the "old guard" complaining that shots/shots on target/big chances are meaningless metrics if (by definition, in contradiction) players aren't converting enough to be classified as "unsustainably overperforming".

Seems to me we only like to classify players as "poor finishers" or "overperforming".

Examples of two (imo myths) circulating this week:
-Jiminez has stats to die for but gets slated as "will never explode" for being a poor finisher but, if a player doesn't have the stats and scores, he's "overperforming".
-Hazard "is bound to regress as he's outperforming xG" but (for me) this isn't overperforming simply, he is making the most of being redeployed in a team which now only aims to create big chances and, 1 on 1 finishing there aren't many better midfielders.

tl;dr: Stop being A) so negative about player underperformance, as you wouldn't buy a player without stats and B) so negative about overperformance of some of the worlds best players, purple seasons happen - Look at Salah 17/18.

Am I G2G? Few question marks..

      Patricio

      Mendy - Alonso - Robbo

      Salah - Hazard - Maddison - Fraser

      Aguero (c) - Mitrovic - Jiminez

      Hennessy / Doherty / AWB / Billing

Should I play Doherty over Fraser?

I’m quite hit adverse but I would probably do that as I think you’ll make that hit back and some this week

          • 11 Years

Yeah long term it’s obviously a great transfer but in order to break even TAA needs to keep a clean sheet (which I think he will) it’s just whether he or WB does anything else which is the risk

Looking for peoples views as im not seeing to many people in this position.

For some reason I’ve kept Mane and worse I have pogba!

But I have 1FT and am more inclined to bring in TAA than move either of these?

      Do I

      A) bring in TAA to get LIV defence covered

      B) ignore defence and change mane and pogba to Salah + cheap mid

Anyone else think that mendy may be good shout for captain this week??

Kun is likely to come off around the 60 mins mark and I feel Burnley could get tired defending after this point.

Could be a good differential or kin could have hat trick after 20mins!!! I'm taking the chance anyways. Wish me luck!!

      Doherty, TAA, Yedlin, Chilwell, AWB
      Salah, Haz, Sterling, Knockaert, 4.3
