Sane in for Mahrez while Hazard is named on the Chelsea bench

Two Premier League matches overlap one another this afternoon, with Manchester City and Chelsea enjoying enticing-looking home fixtures and carrying the hopes of legions of Fantasy managers after a somewhat underwhelming set of results for many FPL bosses on Saturday.

The action kicks off at 15:00 GMT, with Southampton – without a goal in five Premier League matches – the visitors to the Etihad.

Manchester City have won all five of their home league games this season, scoring at a rate of 3.6 goals per fixture at Eastlands in 2018/19.

Nine of Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.3m) ten attacking returns this season (five goals, four assists) have come at the Etihad. The Argentinean striker leads the line for City again this afternoon in his 11th straight league start of 2018/19.

Benjamin Mendy‘s (£6.4m) rate of 7.6 points per match is the best among FPL defenders this season and the French left-back hasn’t failed to record an assist, clean sheet and/or bonus in his seven Premier League appearances of this campaign.

Ederson (£5.8m) and Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m), meanwhile, come into this fixture off the back of recording six straight FPL clean sheets.

Pep Guardiola has made only one change from the side that beat Spurs last Monday, with Leroy Sane (£9.2m) replacing Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m). Raheem Sterling (£11.1m) will, presumably, move across to the right flank to accommodate Sane’s re-introduction.

Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£5.4m) are not quite fit enough for a place on the bench, meanwhile.

Mark Hughes has made three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Newcastle United last weekend, with Shane Long (£4.8m), James Ward-Prowse (£5.1m) and the fit-again Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.5m) replacing Charlie Austin (£5.5m), Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.2m) and Oriel Romeu (£4.3m).

In the 16:00 kick-off, Chelsea take on Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have dropped points in their last two home Premier League fixtures but are nevertheless still unbeaten in the top flight this season.

The 44% of FPL managers hoping for a start for Eden Hazard (£11.3m), whose minutes were in doubt ahead of the visit of Roy Hodgson’s side, were left disappointed when the Belgian was named only among the Chelsea substitutes for this encounter.

The Blues, indeed, are unchanged from the side that started the win over Burnley in Gameweek 11, with Ross Barkley (£5.9m) again lining up in the centre of midfield.

Roy Hodgson has made one change to his Crystal Palace side from the 2-2 draw with Arsenal, meanwhile: Max Meyer (£5.6m) replaces Jordan Ayew (£5.8m).

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy, Fernandinho, Silva, Sane, Sterling, Bernardo, Aguero.

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Soares, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand, Lemina, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Ings, Long, Redmond.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Alonso, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Rudiger, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Pedro, Morata, Willian.

Crystal Palace XI: Hennessey, Van Aanholt, Tomkins, Sakho, Wan-Bissaka, Townsend, Milivojevic, McArthur, Kouyate, Meyer, Zaha.

I don't like to reveal too much aboutyself ;0) but does your career dictate your FPL approach?

I work in Compliance and I am a cautious overthinker rarely taking hits and keeping all chips.

In contrast any folks in the profession of bomb disposal, firefighter etc I reckon you guys play recklessly?

I think that only makes sense if your personality fits your job.

I've had the same job for the past few years but play the game differently from time to time when needs must. LIke last year I was super reactionary and very hit heavy, this year much calmer.

Yeah right... Not saying he will post a similar score next week, but the way they are playing and the way Man United are defending, I wouldn't say he is a bad pick.

Kind of like how most people felt comfortable holding Wilson and Fraser against United this week.

I've just realised that we're 11 weeks in and I'm still to have a captain fail. This isn't intended as a brag, but more of a discussion as I'm sure there's many in the same boat.

Is this just a coincidence coinciding with unbeaten starts from the top three, or is it more than that?

Is this indicative of the widening chasm between the top three or four teams and the rest of the league? Paticularly during home fixtures. We're at the stage where City and Liverpool, and to some extent Chelsea (or at least Hazard) are so attacking and a clear step above the rest in terms of quality that they're basically guaranteed attacking returns and it almost takes the fun out of the captaincy.

Who wants to take a punt on a Wilson or an Arnautovic armband when you have Salah, Aguero or Hazard with a home fixture against a team in the bottom 10? It feels like our captains are basically being chosen for us at times beause of the overwhelming expectation and to go against the grain is riskier than ever.

Since Leicester happened the top 6 all bucked up their ideas and now we are seeing a bigger gulf than ever between them and the rest. As those teams are more consistently performing, so are our captain choices. I think its going to be a record breaking scoring season fpl wise.

I think if it carries on, that could well be the case. I don't think I've ever had four captain successes on the trot before (and I'm generally a dull 'play it safe' player), never mind 11.

Next week there's Salah or Mane at home to Fulham...I've probably cursed it now but the odds on making it 12 in a row are extremely high.

In a way, it diminishes the happiness from a successful captain pick. I should be over the moon at double figures from Aguero today, but who didn't expect it? Not only that, but the vast majority of players also did (looking at the Captain Poll) so gains are minimal.

Many didn't get Aguero for his hat trick against Huddersfield, many even xferred him out or didn't get him in. Some did Sterling instead of Aguero this week which is a big swing. If you haven't failed a captain yet you're doing better than most

Some people got Jamie Jackson'd in GW2 and missed out on the 20 points, but look at the following points from that week:

        Salah - 9
        Mane - 10
        Mendy - 8
        Alonso - 13
        Trippier - 11
        Kane - 7

That's still a very good haul from practically all of the usual suspects. I didn't include Hazard but he also got 4 points with an assist from a 20 minute cameo. You might have missed Aguero but you'll almost certainly have landed on any of the other options that week, it would have been pretty tough to have a captain fail.

11* success here too, despite missing Aguero/Hazard 20 hauls as vice captaincy. Unprecedented considering captaincy was one area I really failed with last season.

The same. I've been incredibly lucky and rewarded by just picking the most obvious captain every week.

      Player times points average
      picked
      Agüero 6 106 17.7
      Salah 3 62 20.7
      Hazard 2 28 14

I've had 2 captain failures already - Mane in GW6 and Hazard in GW9.
Some even brought Harry Kane in for a one week captaincy fail in GW8.
The mistakes are all still out there waiting to be made, and some captaincy successes are still bigger than others!
But yes, it is certainly looking like a high-scoring season.

Rarely ever brag, even with some decent scores, but a score of 94 with Mitro left to play, it deserves it i reckon. Two amazing gameweeks on the bounce, should push me into the top 20k hopefully.

its also pointless asking this question immedietely after 1 of the players has a 21 point haul.
this folks on site struggle to be objective in appraising players the temptation is to always to chase last weeks points
salah could easily get a hatty against Fulham and sterling rested next game.

What do you folks think - is Sterling objectively worth (soon to be) 2.5m more than Mahrez?
... and try not to be blinded by this GWs scoring in the appraisal

    1. WDT
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 6 months ago

Yes - total points backs this up - and that's having already been rotated.

Salah has needed to start every game to still be trailing by 13 after tonight.

      • 14 Years

I think that they may share some pitch time, but Sterling just seems to get so many returns. They seem to have an entire style of play based around him running into the box and scoring from the inside channel.

Maybe not 2.5, but probably worth a bit more. My best guess is that Mahrez will be rotated just a touch more. Pep loves Raz though.

so far Sterling 9/11 starts, subbed off for the last 15mins in 2 of those, and the last 5mins in 2 others. the games he missed were HUD & BUR though (both high scoring)
whilst Mahrez has 5/11 starts, been subbed off twice and subbed on 5 times. He has actually played a part in 10 of the games to sterlings 9, however quite a few dreaded 1 pointers is not what you want.

so it backs up what you say. question is does this stay the same? if you look at the last 4 games they both started and played 3 of them. has pep just been settling him in?
