How Mohamed Salah is faring in FPL compared to last season

After studying how Sergio Aguero (£11.4m), Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) and Harry Kane (£12.4m) have fared in 2018/19 compared to their best-ever Fantasy Premier League seasons, we now turn our attention to the most premium of premium picks: Mohamed Salah (£13.0m).

In this mini-series, we look at the key underlying statistics of some big-money assets and analyse how the figures from this campaign are matching up to their stand-out FPL seasons in the past.

For Salah, his zenith was a record-breaking, 32-goal 2017/18 in which the Egyptian racked up 303 points in FPL.

Very few Fantasy managers are expecting the Liverpool midfielder to match that haul of last season, which is, of course, a bit of an issue given that Salah’s price has rocketed up to the £13.0m mark.

Salah’s “triple-hundred” in 2017/18 came courtesy of 32 goals, 12 assists, 15 clean sheet points and 26 bonus, scored at a rate of 8.42 FPL points per match (PPM).

The former Chelsea and Roma midfielder missed only two Premier League matches altogether, with just two of his 36 top-flight appearances coming off the bench.

Salah is an ever-present this campaign, averaging 6.25 FPL points per match.

With competition for attacking places at Liverpool perhaps fiercer this season than it was in 2017/18, we can surely expect Salah to miss out on a few starts as the fixture schedule gets ever-more congested, though Jurgen Klopp has resisted the urge to rest last season’s talisman (in the league, at least) with three months of the campaign already gone.

If Salah avoids injury and goes on to make the same number of league appearances in 2018/19 as he did last year (36) while scoring at his current rate, we can expect the Egyptian to rack up somewhere in the region of 225 FPL points – although any dreaded “one-point” cameos off the bench would, of course, affect that rather crude forecast.

With so many unknown variables to take into account between now and May, it is pretty futile to make such a projection based on PPM.

Instead, we will look at Salah’s attacking KPIs from last season to see how his current underlying statistics contrast with those of 2017/18.

We went out yesterday and have been utter dross throughout. England are a better team at moment. I have no issue admitting that but let's not make it out to be huge. Come on, people on here have been hammering this competition and the IB.

Win the competition and get through to the Euro then I'll understand.

Tier 4 teams get to fight for a qualification spot at Euros and so try and win games rather than their normal playing for 0-0 draws.

For everyone else its much closer to a friendly, but at least its friendlies against stronger opposition.

Yer basically one team gets through to euros. Whoever it is gets to play friendlies instead of competetive games.

The way euros is set up now no half decent team should fail to qualify anyway. I even think Italy could get through

Good money for this Nations League stuff:

In addition to the €1.5 million solidarity fee for participating in the Nations League, the four participants will receive an additional €1.5M for winning their groups and qualifying for the Nations League Finals.

In addition, the participants will receive payment based on performance:

    Winners: €4.5M
    Runners-up: €3.5M
    Third place: €2.5M
    Fourth place: €1.5M

This means that the maximum amount of solidarity and bonus fees for the UEFA Nations League winners is €7.5M

I did it. Surprised that people are expecting West Ham to score 1 and even 2 against them. They're the best team defensively by a mile and don't see them conceding unless Ederson fooks up again.

I own Arnie and Anderson and both of them are on my bench right now.

    A) Salah + Barkley > Sterling + Martial

    But now leaning towards

    B) Mané + Barkley > Sane + Martial (-4)

Would probably do A over 2 weeks but willing to take the hit on B to maximise how long Mendy is out for, which looks the best option thoughts please?

Are we waisting our money on expensive defenders?

Alonso in an own class when it comes to attacking returns, no other standout options so far this year.

Max goals are 2 for a defender, including no big hitters (Dunk, Duffy, Tarkowski, Bamba, Maguire, Holebas).

Regarding assists it seems a bit better, but not impressing except from Alonso and Mendy:

    Alonso 7
    Mendy 6
    Bellerin 4
    Trippier 4
    Holebas 4
    Pereira 3
    Robertson 3
    TAA 2
    Duffy 2
    Morrison 2
    Keane 2
    Löwe 2
    Chillwell 2
    Etc.

So still worth going 4 in attack this year?

Should we stay clear of the expensive big hitters if we’re not only seeking cs, except from Alonso?

Likes of Trippier, Robertson get BAPs and an assist for them is often worth 5-6pts.

I just know Arnautovic is going to troll us and get 2 goals in his next 5, and then bang in a hattrick when i inevitably drop him

What? Why would you drop him with those fixtures?

Well, if he'd only got 2 goals in his next five games he's clearly not in a fantastic vein of form. Could be any number of reasons to drop if he isn't in form - change of formation (both for fantasy or irl), better alternative, managing injury

He seems to rotate with Mata. It's usually Lingard in the big games, and Mata against the minnows.

Im planning to triple up on City. Chelsea has some merit in a double up I think.

Austrian coach Franco Foda on Arnautović's fitness:

"Marko can't manage 90 minutes, but playing for a short spell is possible."

("Marko kann leider nicht über 90 Minuten spielen. Ein Kurzeinsatz geht sich aber aus.")

Ok regarding Arnie. Do I bench or trust Newcastle to get another clean sheet away to Burnley ??

Clean sheet away at Burnley is difficult.
          I would play Arnie instead

Got both, playing both. I have enough to cover if Arnie blanks but his stats against the big 6 are very good.
