Captains

Captain Sensible – Richarlison tops poll in complicated Gameweek 13 debate

Gameweek 13 of Fantasy Premier League could prove the most difficult for the captaincy this season.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool are on the road this weekend which robs us of the opportunity to back a Salah or Aguero home captaincy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea travel to Spurs leaving the door open for a differential to prove the most popular. But is he the right option to go with?…

Captain Poll

Gameweek 13 sees a surprise leader emerge at the top of the poll in Everton’s Richarlison (£7.0m). No player has garnered more than the Brazilian’s 33.47% backing in the vote so far and when we dig a little deeper, it’s easy to see why. The makeshift centre-forward has three goals and one assist since Gameweek 8, recording an average of 6.6 points per match in his last five league outings. This weekend he goes up against a Cardiff City side conceding 2.2 goals per away match this season.

Below Richarlison is a selection of captaincy household names that have not quite earned the usual support from their owners. Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) have rotated home fixtures quite nicely so far this season but both of them are away this weekend. For that reason, just 22.53% of our voters think Salah is worth captaining at Watford with even fewer (16.89%) supporting Aguero at West Ham.

The last time the pair were ruled out of the captaincy (when they faced each other in Gameweek 8) we were fortunate enough to see Eden Hazard (£11.3m) present a favourable trip to Southampton. This week Chelsea are away at Tottenham, pulling the Belgian out of widespread consideration. Accordingly, he looks set for a 10th-place finish in the captain poll with just 1.59% of the votes.

Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) heads up the best of the rest outside of the this week’s top three with 4.73% backing, after two goals and three assists in the last three Gameweeks.

He is followed by Anthony Martial (£7.6m), whose six goals in five matches has convinced 3.93% of you that he is the optimum captain for Gameweek 13 when Manchester United host Crystal Palace.

After that, it’s Salah’s Liverpool colleague Sadio Mané (£9.9m) with a 1.94% share.

Matt Doherty‘s (£4.9m) potential for big returns against Huddersfield has convinced 1.68% of our voters to back him for the armband, no defender has more backing for Gameweek 13.

Despite boasting more encouraging underlying statistics than team-mate Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) sits way down in ninth on the captain poll. That is almost certainly as a result of his current fitness issues, although his price does mean that his ownership is 20.6% lower than his Brazilian colleague.

Considering going the different route and putting hazard as cpt vs a weak tottenham defense, also weak defensive mid. A lot of people taking a chance on richarlison but i already own him so no matter if they make off the captaincy or not i will naturally cover his initial pts. I can see hazard scoring a brace...or maybe im just deluded lol

I remember hearing (I think on the Scoutcast) that Liverpool put their team up on the website a few minutes ahead of 2pm. Anyone know if that's reliable? Would be useful to see the team news before making any final transfer decisions, especially now Robertson might be benched.

depends who you have to bench instead of mendy & diangana.
if you reasonably expect dunk+martial to perform bench+8, & equal it if one of them blanks, then yes

I'd probably start Doherty over Mane this week, surely you've got to start him. Arnie is the obvious replacement, although Robbo might make the decision easy for you if he's out.

Tbh Im tempted too. Fixture congestion + not the best schedule + Klopp hints he needs a rest.

A downgrade to Vinagre would free enough money to bring Dilva instead of Hojbjerg for me. Fecking tempting.

Was listening to a basketball player in an interview yesterday talking about his preference for the 'eye-test' over over stats and was thinking about who I've been most impressed with when going to a games.

As a Chelsea fan, I've always thought Hazard looks sharper in real life.

I also remember thinking Gerrard looked fantastic earlier on in his career. Seeing him go box to box perhaps wasn't properly appreciated on TV.

For those of you lucky enough to get to games regularly, who have you been impressed by? And do you take any notice to the 'eye-test' with regards to FPL?

I don't go to PL games very often, I've seen Man Utd a few times over the past couple of seasons, and also a few Spurs games.

But I go off the eye test 100% rather than stats based analysis.

Two notable examples from this season, I watched a Chelsea game, and Kante had two 'big chances' in the box, one was a header than went flying over the bar from 6 yards out...I thought to myself how many people would be going crazy at his increased 'touches in the penalty area' and 'big chance' numbers, but in reality, the chances of him scoring more than 2 goals a seasons is minimal.

The other example - watching Lukaku vs Lukaku stats.

With the Robbo comments, which of these moves would you do this week?

    A) Mendy/Hughes > Peltier/Martial (would leave me with only AWB as a playing sub, who would come on for Robbo if benched)

    B) Mendy/Ings > Digne/Jimenez (would likely bench Robbo or Arnie and have them first sub ahead of Hughes and AWB).

            Ryan Hamer

            Alonso Robbo *Mendy *Jonny *AWB

Haz Mane Fraser **Rich (Bilva out) **Martial (Maddi out)

            Kun Arnie *Ings

            1.0 ITB

The * is for players flagged and ** for transfers done already. Ings AWB Jonny on the bench so I need to get rid of Mendy to get 11 out.

Thinking of Meny to Vinegre so I can turn Ings and Jonny to Morata and Diop next gw. Unfortunately I'm 0.1 short of getting Balbuena

Both will probably start. Emery hasn't talked to the press yet but we know Laca is okay.

Benching dilemma this week, who would you bench out of:

    a) Alonso (Chelsea away)
    b) Mane (Watford away)
    c) Fraser (Arsenal home)
    d) Arnautovic (City home)

I'd do it just to get rid of Deulofeu.

    Fabs
    Alonso Doherty Robbo Laporte Duffy
    Richarlison Salah Hazard
    Jimenez Kun
    Button - Arnie - Kenedy - Obiang

Completely confused on who to bench and play here, but I suppose if Robbo might not start, it could be worse. Any thoughts?

On Kun captain, but it's a toss up between him, Rich and Salah as per everyone.
