Meet the Manager #10 – Mark McGettigan (aka FPL General)

With top 500 finishes in three of his last four seasons Mark McGettigan, aka FPL  General, is a more than worthy interviewee for our Meet the Manager series.

Mark explains what it takes to make the leap from being a good Fantasy Premier League manager to one who is challenging for the top places in the competition.

As well as patience and an aversion to hits, he believes that bravery in the transfer market and avoiding the crowd are important lessons to a successful ascent up the rankings.

He also reveals why underlying statistics are only one part of his Fantasy management jigsaw, which is dominated by the good old-fashioned eye-test.

The FPL website’s own Watchlist tool is another vital weapon in Mark’s Fantasy management armoury. He discusses why this often overlooked function has been so important to helping him better organise his thoughts regarding transfers.

However, with a current rank just outside the top 400,000, he faces one of his toughest tasks yet in 2018/19.

As well as sharing his strategies for success he also analyses where it has gone wrong this season and how he plans to turn it around.

Tapping into Manchester City’s potent midfield and ending his reliance on mediocre captains look key as he aims to once again finish strongly.

The chat with Mark is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

Who do I captain? Don't own Kane or Salah. Need to hide behind my couch.

    Sterling
    Sane
    Hazard
    Auba
    Arnie

I am doing the same, my reasoning is that Pep is unlikely to rest both for the full 90. If I had Kane I would captain him, however I brought in Auba and he's the standout captain for GW16

      Tough.

      Sterling - might be dropped
Sane - always a rotation risk and Watford no pushovers
Hazard - Chelsea and Haz not exactly purring at the mo but Wolves are leaky.
Aubs - Utd rubbish in defence but both teams a bit unpredictable.
Arnie - Cardiff on a mini-roll and not exactly at his best.

If it were me, Haz (c) Aubs (vc) or maybe vice versa.

Currently I am going sterling C with Auba vice. Sterling usually starts or doesn't play while I am worried with Sane, he has come off the bench.

I don't trust pep enough to have Sterling/Sane as C and VC as I remember last year having Jesus(c) and Sterling(VC) and both of them were rested.....

Auba in form and MUN defense has been terrible, so figure there could be worse punts for a VC. Pat of me wants to slap the VC on Arnie though, they could tear up Cardiff at home, given what they did to Newcastle away.

True. Also I started questioning my statement that Sterling is not coming from the bench. They might need him if Jesus doesn't improve from last game. So there's a chance.

I know this is a nonsense argument but Hazard genuinely only gets points when I don't have him, and I've just sold, so I'd go fir him if I were you

You could have got far better players in Manés price bracket unless your saving cash for someone else. But isn’t that like 4.5 million difference?

good move, mane is an a class dosser

It's so difficult to choose between Aubameyang and Kane, especially with two good budget options up front (Wilson and Arnie). So I've been toying with a way to accommodate both over the next two GWs and came up with this:

    Aguero > Kane
    Arnie > Aubameyang
    Hazard > Felipe Anderson

This allows both Kane and Aubmeyang and mitigates the loss of Arnie with his great fixtures by bringing in Anderson who is in even better form. It would leave me with this - any thoughts?

    Fabianski
    Alonso Robertson TAA
    Sterling Anderson Richarlison Fraser
    Kane Aubameyang Wilson
(Button, AWB, Bennett, Stephens) + 1.3m

    1. Ten Season Wonder
      • 10 Years

      Great moves tbf.

If I was on WC, i would go for Anderson over Arnie for my WHU coverage for sure.

Thanks. I will sleep on it because normally when I see someone suggesting they take out 3 players with such unbelievable FPL pedigree I am confident it will backfire!

    2. Niho992
      • 5 Years

I would rid Wilson before Arnie if I must choose. You already have Fraser and Bou have though fixtures.

In best scenario i would choose one of the Kane or Auba and stick with him.

      Your call.

Wilson has been more fixture-proof than Fraser though - has scored in both Old Trafford and the Etihad. The only thing is it's tough to find an equally good mid at Fraser's price point.

      3. Hulk Smash
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 5 months ago

It's a tough call between them but Wilson is cheaper, has already scored against United and City this season, and most importantly is nailed for 90 minutes every week whereas Arnie has a lot of minor injury problems.

I probably will pick one of Kane/Auba eventually though. Which do you lean towards?

        1. Niho992
          • 5 Years
          5 years, 5 months ago

I would pick Kane and i actually picked him already.
Better fixtures, less risk of rotation, he is on penalties, and he loves december/january.

    3. FPL_DON

Kane hasn't proved anything im a spurs fan and if he keeps playing deep cant see the big hauls anymore

      1. Hulk Smash
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 5 months ago

The fact he hasn't passed the eye test, especially for his price, is why I am reluctant to get on Kane this season. He seems a bit like Salah this season - will consistently get points but only 6-9 rather than double digit hauls - and I ditched Salah for Sterling last week for exactly that reason.

Hopefully. This Southampton game strikes me as similar to the one before his hat-tricks last year - i.e. a disappointing blank, people sell, and then he punishes them like the troll that he is 😀

A good rule of thumb is if you already had certain moves in mind and then come here to find others considering the same moves, it's a good sign.

If you had no intention of making those moves until you got here but now you are strongly considering them, it's a bad sign.

G2G? Fraser decent cover for Sterling's potential benching, and while not the best, Doherty coming in for Robbo if he is out. Pray everyone else plays given Bennett may not play at all anyway!
