Scoutcast Episode 278 – Greatness

Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.

Mohamed Salah certainly provided a timely reminder that he is already one of Fantasy Football’s all-time greats on Saturday, with a hat-trick at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth.

But even that impressive display is seemingly not enough to convince all of the Scoutcast crew that the Liverpool attacker should be an essential part of their festive lineups.

Joining Joe, David and Luke in this week’s episode is Adam Hopcroft, who has featured on our Meet the Manager series and is among those still looking to ditch the Egyptian.

During a “Salexit” discussion in our community questions section, Adam reveals that there may well be better premium assets who are more deserving of attention.

In contrast, Joe and David are still backing the Reds’ marksman following his recent goal glut, which also includes a midweek strike against Napoli in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Luke is resolutely continuing his no-Salah policy, even though it cost him dear last time out.

Salah unsurprisingly dominates the crew’s look back at Gameweek 16, including a special instalment of Rough with the Smooth, dedicated to those who jettisoned the Liverpool man before his weekend heroics.

The crew also provide an update on the latest whipping boys and the potential captain candidates who look set to exploit their frailties over Christmas.

Elsewhere, our community questions section takes in the emerging battle between Fantasy Premier League’s old guard of veterans and the new, social-media-and-price-prediction-site-savvy managers on the scene.

The crew round off with a look at the best differentials and clean sheet prospects in Gameweek 17, as well as revealing their transfer and captaincy plans.

Should I take a hit in this team with 2.2m ITB?

    Fabianski
    Alonso Robertson Stones Doherty
    Eriksen Sane Anderson
    Kane(c) Wilson Jimenez

    Patricio; Martial, AWB, obiang

I wouldn't have eriksen and Kane so I'd do eriksen to Hazard, but that's just personal choice. Don't see too much wrong with your team

Already have Kane and Wilson; Raz and Haz; Doherty and Robbo.... Which group complements the best? (sorry for all the options, but I'm stuck)

    1) Azpi; Anderson, Son; Rondón
    2) Alonso; Anderson, Bilva; Rondón
    3) Kola; Snoddy, Fraser; Aubameyang
    4) Luiz; Anderson, Bilva; Jiménez
    5) Kola; Sané, Anderson, Fraser; Success
    6) Luiz; Anderson, Son; Jiménez

    Thanks in advance!!

Alonso scored 11.66 points/game in the opening 3gw then 4.92/game for the rest of the season, yet it seems than some managers think he s essential on a wc. What am i missing ? I'm not being sarcastic by the way just want to know, do people predict more double digits ?? good run of fixtures ? thanks 🙂

Good run of fixtures coming up 6 nearest GWs...I wish I sold Alonso after GW4 but have stuck with him...with coming games in mind I will keep him in...

He is probably still one of the most attacking defenders in the game and has good fixtures ahead. I do now think there's potentially better value elsewhere in the likes of TAA, Digne, Doherty etc. It's no different to me than looking at not owning Salah and finding better value in other midfielders.

Has to be the fixtures, I'd guess. Plus, he's the only one with any consistent attacking potential. He could start racking up the assists again. That said, I'm a little hesitant with Alonso as he hasn't had a PL rest yet, while Luiz had his right before City.

He’s the best defender to ever be available in FPL

      14 goals, 14 assists, 36 clean sheets, 40 baps - in 80 games

He has a well acknowledged boom-bust cycle, at the bottom of which people sell and get punished, time after time after time

Good fixtures and almost no rotation risk as Sarri doesn't seem to rate Emerson

    Patricio - 4M
    Luiz - Laporte - Doherty - AWB - Bennet
    Salah - Richarlison - Hazard - Anderson - Gunnarson

Thanks. At first I wanted to get a Spurs mid/forward, but Kane is too expensive and the midfielders are a bit uncertain at the moment.
Now I'm kind of undecided between a Spurs or Liverpool defender, probably the gk. You think Lloris is a better option than Alisson?

Hopefully my players won't get injured so I can fulfill my plan. Which one looks better

    A) to gw19: Son + Laporte -> Rich + Digne
    to gw20: Alisson -> Ederson
    to gw22: Laca -> Agüero

    Or

    B) to gw19: Fraser + Laporte -> Rich + Digne
    to gw20: Alisson -> Ederson
to gw 22: Son + Laca -> Hazard + Wilson

    My current team:

    Alisson - Hamer
    Alonso - Robbo - Laporte - Doherty - AWB
    Sterling - Son - Anderson - Fraser - N. Mendy
    Kane - Laca - Jimenez

I don't like Jimenez and Jota double up. Maybe Jota -> Schurrle as Fulham has pretty good fixtures. I guess TAA is also injured and Liverpool has pretty rough upcoming fixtures so maybe you should switch him.

Two strikers is a luxury you can afford with your defence intact but he will have make shift defenders , maybe even one from reserves ..they will need protection from another mid. Lacca taken off at ht as well last weekend

Unai likes to experiment, I see where you are coming from but when auba's pace is needed out wide, in a 4-2-3-1 then I think both start. The defensive injuries,I see as being minor. Lolo would be back soon snd Sokratis was only a suspension.

I wonder does Emery really rate Laca? Any time I've seen him he's always looked pretty dangerous but...

Emery gave him 9 consecutive league starts earlier in the year, and in the last four of those Laca contributed nothing (Arsenal had 7 goals/7 assists, Laca got 1 goal)

Since then he's only started 1 of 4, and the one he started he was hauled off on 45 mins.

Either Emery is going cold on him, or it's fitness related? Either way is bad for FPL hence he is being sold in massive quantities

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 6 months ago

Hmm, plenty of twisting of facts here, Maximus. Lacazette has missed games through fitness, and he was "hauled off" for tactical reasons mor than anything else. To say he's contributed "nothing" is harsh given that you then state he's scored a goal, not to mention to fact he's a talented, fairly selfless footballer. I think thefact he had 9 consecutive starts is significant evidence that Emery wants to play him, but he's also shown that he's pramatic so will drop players when he sees it necessary for the performance. I very much doubt he does rate Lacazette, personally.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 6 months ago

A half time substitution can be sugar coated as tactical if it makes it easier to swallow. “Tactical”, “Fitness”, whatever the reason may be, he was hauled off at half time, so I don’t see that as a twisted fact.

From an FPL perspective - again we can sugar coat his one attacking return from a potential 14 in 4 games, but there is no twisted fact here.

As I said, he’s looked quite dangerous to me when i’ve seen him play - an opinion, not a fact...

9 consecutive starts ending a month ago were certainly evidence Emery wanted to play him.

And 1 start in the last 4 suggests either Emery is going cold on him or he has a fitness problem, both of which are bad for FPL hence he is being sold in massive quantities

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            5 years, 6 months ago

He's back from his fitness problem now. I think the number of goals Laca has scored in recent games will be a pretty small part of Emery's evaluation of Lacazette. Thinking about the broader picture is hardly "sugar coating" the simple facts. There are many more interesting and explanatory/predictive factors, but you can interperet the above facts how you like. I personally find your conclusion to be a bit tenuous or forced, but each to their own. No offence intended

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              5 years, 6 months ago

I see one start in 4 games, combined with a halftime substitution in the one start as a negative factor from an FPL perspective.

When stacked with a run of 9 starts prior to that, the last 4 of which produced one attacking return from 7 goals/7 assists, it still looks negative.

I think it’s a fair conclusion that the player could have fitness issues, or a manager who is hesitant to play him at the minute - neither of which are what you want at any stage of he season in FPL, let alone he busiest time of the year.

I also think he looks dangerous when he plays

So i’m pretty much just repeating my original post

Kind of another sweeping generalisation based on, basically, only the first two games of the season. He played 90 against Liverpool and played the entire second half against Spurs (first game back after a knee injury I think)

So only against United he was benched with no personal mitigating factors, besides the fact he may not have been fully fit (don't know). But there are still a ton of other factors, like tactics, form of other players, etc, which will not be the same for every top 6 fixture.

Both dodgy - both going for a third start in 7 days, rest, and or a bench cameo a real possibility. Kane, Auba, Haz, Salah all better chances of avoiding limited minutes

But they both looked sharp tonight. City must win this game and I think Pep will start them again. Of course Kane is the most lucrative option by far this week from all aspects.

Oh there’s no doubt they looked sharp - they are absolutely lethal players, genuinely world class and must be terrifying to play against.

But Pep is Pep and their schedule is such that I can see somewhere between truncated minutes and a benching for either/both - so hard to tell which though, just very dodgy ground for the captaincy I feel

    A) Antonio > Sane
    B) Lacazette > Kane
    C) Save

    Patrício
    Alonso, Doherty, Bellerín
    Anderson, Sterling, Son (V), Snodgrass
    Kamara, Aubameyang (C), Lacazette

    Hamer | Antonio, Digne, Yedlin

    2.9 ITB

Also, every player in my starting XI is a captaincy option (except Kamara if I save the FT). Who would you captain and vice captain? Currently thinking Son and Aubameyang might be the best options, but Sterling, Sane and Kane are dangerous too.

I was thinking if Auba get subbed off early because he has started all the games this festive period or does not start or emery says he has a back spasm. For safety reasons, (c) Sterling and do (a).

Cheers SW, I was planning to do A originally, so I'm glad you agree 😀 Sterling is the highest on RMT, I believe, so you might be right that he's the safest. Everton aren't pushovers anymore, though, whereas Southampton and Burnley are still pretty pants :/

        1. Sarcastic Warnock
          • 5 Years

To be honest, Southampton got one lovely leaky defence and any of the arsenal strikers could go big even both, however, Emery can't be trusted when he loves to use substitutes at any time in a game.

Kane should also go big but I don't trust him this year, he has that tendency to be a good troll especially after Bamba and Sean made him look average in October.

Everton won't be pushovers but what would be will still be. MCI 5- 1everton still on the cards.Pep needs a response atleast.

    Current squad is
    Ederson (Hamer)
    Alonso, TAA, AWB (Keane, Jonny)
    Sterling, Sane, Sigurdsson, Gudmundsson (Obiang)
    Kane(c), Lacazette, Success

Feel like I have problems everywhere with this squad... TAA, Sigurdsson, Gudmundsson, Jonny... even worried about Sane and Lacazette.

Any suggestions this week would be really appreciated, thinking Siggy and Gudmundsson to Snodgrass and Alli/Son but feel like both those could be rested this week too! Problems...

Sane I wouldnt worry about... Siggy > Anderson is obvious, probably make a def switch as well if TAA is out. Dont think you should bother with Alli/Son when you got Kane and Spurs got 4 fixtures in 10 days.
