Captain Sensible – Salah and Kane battle for the Gameweek 19 armband

The Boxing Day-orientated Gameweek 19 looks to be taking Fantasy managers back in time, with the captain battle appearing to be between two of last season’s usual suspects.

We’ve gone over those doing well in the poll before doing a comparison between the individuals themselves, their teams and their opponents in order to find the best candidate.

Captain Poll

The Gameweek 19 captain poll indicates that this week the most popular skipper will be either Harry Kane (£12.5m) or Mohamed Salah (£13.2m), much like it was for so much of last season.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward led the poll with a tally of 38% just over 24-hours ago but that has since been cut back. He now claims just 30.9% of the vote, sneaking out Salah who sits on 28.7%.

Way off in third place is Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (5.0%) while Kane’s Spurs colleague Son Heung-min (£8.5m) has just 3.4% backing.

Eden Hazard (3.4%), Marcus Rashford (2.9%) and Anthony Martial (2.6%) are the other contenders in this bracket of support.

Not a single Manchester City player has more than 3% backing in the poll, with Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) languishing far down the list on 2.4%.

    From the socalled "Martial doubts article": 'Although the pair were not spotted by MEN photographers Martial has been known to join up with the squad at a later time, and is not believed to be a doubt for the upcoming fixture.'

        This. I can't see OGS and Phelan changing a winning team unless there are injuries. Fergie would not change a winning team except when playing one of the big teams (e.g playing Park in midfield and putting Rooney on the left wing). OGS and Phelan know the Man Utd and Fergie way.

      Personally I read on Twitter that Martial lives 5 mins from the hotel ManU use before home games. As he is a new Dad and the manager will want to keep the good mood going highly likely he's let Martial stay at home, as he has done for previous home fixtures in the past

        Agreed. I was shitting myself when I first heard those Aguero rumours as he was my captain and I was going out that day - had a look on Twitter and it all came from one guardian article with no sources at all, just said he *might* be tired and *may be rested* with no quotes from anyone to back up his assertion

    Could do with someone to either talk me out of a big mistake, or egg me on to a brilliant move. How foolish would it be to play my bench boost today?

    I have keep telling myself I will wait until a double gameweek, but I am starting to doubt that. How likely am I ever going to be, even in a double week, to have 15 players I absolutely believe are going to bag me huge returns? I just don't see it happening.

    This week I have ended up with a starting 11 I am reasonably comfortable will all play at least some minutes, and a bench of Fabianski, Snodgrass, Doherty and AWB. I wouldn't be worried about playing any of these this week, so find my finger hovering over the "Activate Beench Boost" button.

    Is this the result of one too many Snowballs, or maybe a Christmas chocolate induced madness, or is it a somewhat sensible risk?

    Any thoughts either way appreciated 🙂

      I am very tempted as well but saving it for a double. You'll regret it later, if only for the sheer joy of having 30 players in a gameweek.

      I'm also worried about people being rested for boxing day so I think I'll lose a couple to that.

      Personally wouldn’t want to bench boost this week. Very congested fixtures and chances of all your squad starts.

      It’s not about bagging huge returns.

      Playing it in a double game week maximises your chances of more points (for obvious reasons). You also want certainty of all 15 starting (otherwise it’s a waste). We are in prime rotation season currently.

      Of course bench boost could work this week but ‘the right olay’ Is to leave it until a double gameweek. I mean, I could win the lottery tomorrow but I’m not planning my life strategy around it!

      That is a great bench. I've been tempted all week to play mine too (current bench Anderson, Alonso, Wilson) but at the end of the day I could have 2 or 3 players not playing. I feel bench boost is too risky this time of year

          I could pick anyone to bench and it wouldn't look right. Trying to not look at the prices and just pick who I think will get the most points. As a Hammers fan I don't see us doing well against Southampton to be honest so hence Anderson on the bench, and Alonso has the hardest fixture of my 5 defenders

      Why would you want to get VVD with Liverpool's upcoming fixtures? I think KDB and Son are both good options and Son has better fixtures so I'd be leaning towards him but spend those additional funds elsewhere, not on VVD.

        Mahrez played 20 minutes as a substitute against Crystal Palace and would be expected to come back against his former club as he did last week. Raheem Sterling probably gets the nod over Leroy Sane on the other wing with Sergio Aguero preferred to Gabriel Jesus upfront for extra firepower.

        It's a risky move which could work out well. However, if you bought him at a much lower price, you'd probably be better off keeping Auba. Also, Brighton are missing Dunk so that might affect them a bit defensively.

          Didn't captain him but I had 2 FT's so did Kane - Rashford and Guendouzi - Hazard this week (Guendouzi was a WC punt, and with Xmas fixtures I needed a playing bench), put the armband on Salah instead

        Wouldn’t be surprising, same could be said of Salah. Let’s assume Newcastle are going to play ultra defensive, I reckon we could see sub 20% possession. If they nullify the centre of attack, Liverpool will still find a way through but it might be from outside the box. I toyed with captaining Shaqiri but settled on a risky Hazard.

      My next 3 planned transfers:

      GWK20: Auba to Rashford
      GWK21: save
      GWK22: Snodgrass to Rich
      GWK23: Sterling to Salah

      You just know it won't be that smooth. I am fully behind the couch watching Salah atm, with worries about Sterling's minutes.

      I could... this week... -8 Auba to Rashford & Sterling to Salah, change captain from Son to Salah. Main rival is captaining Salah.

        Mahrez played 20 minutes as a substitute against Crystal Palace and would be expected to come back against his former club as he did last week. Raheem Sterling probably gets the nod over Leroy Sane on the other wing with Sergio Aguero preferred to Gabriel Jesus upfront for extra firepower.
