How the Top 10k are looking ahead of Blank Gameweek 31

This article examines how the Fantasy managers that sit in the top 10,000 (at the point of the Gameweek 30 deadline) are shaping up ahead of Blank Gameweek 31.

Studying the most-owned players in Gameweek 30, seven of the “template team” are without a Premier League fixture next weekend.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m), Matt Doherty (£5.4m), Paul Pogba (£9.0m), Son Heung-min (£8.8m), Raul Jimenez (£6.9m), Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) blank in Gameweek 31 due to the clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Doherty, Wan-Bissaka, Pogba, Jimenez and Aguero are each owned by around 50% of FPL managers or more in the top 10,000.

11.2% of the top 10k own all five of these players.

As the graphic below shows, three of the four clubs with the most representation in the top 10k are without a Premier League match in Gameweek 31.

The combined average number of players just from Wolves, Manchester United, Manchester City and Crystal Palace in the top 10,000 FPL squads is 5.3, suggesting there are plenty of these elite managers who aren’t yet in a position to field a full complement of Fantasy players in Gameweek 31.

Chip Usage

43.5% of FPL managers inside the top 10,000 have all four of their chips – Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain – still available, as the below graphic shows.

Over 25% of the top 10k have already used two or more of their chips going into Blank Gameweek 31.

The breakdown below shows which chips have already been used by our leading FPL bosses.

Almost 32% of the FPL bosses inside the top 10,000 have already used their second Wildcard, while 2,207 of these managers will have to navigate the weeks ahead without their Free Hit chip.

More than one in six of these managers have already deployed their Bench Boost chip.

Individual player ownership

The below table shows how well-owned this cherry-picked selection of players are among the top 10,000 FPL managers.

All of these Fantasy assets have league fixtures in Gameweek 31.

Gameweek 30 Captaincy

We have focused mostly on Gameweek 31 in this piece but the below graphic shows the spread of Gameweek 30 captaincy picks within the top 10,000.

Almost 9% of the top 10,000 managers look primed for a rank hike after Raheem Sterling‘s (£11.4m) hat-trick on Saturday evening.

With no WC, I will be holding Sterling, Pogba, Hazard, Son and AWB.
Have exact money to do Quaner to DCL to field ten, worth it of just leave it at nine?
    Alisson
    Robertson / Luiz / Rice / Lascelles
    Hazard / Mane
    Vardy / Rondon / *DCL

To field 10 players next week would you take a -12 hit to do these transfers?

    Pogba + Rashford + Dunk > Hazard + Wilson + Azpi

Or just take -8 without the defender swap?

    1. JasonG123
      • 5 Years

I'd probably take the -12 with the defender swap if you're FH32 and WC34.

Any advice here fellas? Back to the top of my cash ML's and wanna stay there now i have a bit of breathing room.

***Have No WC or FH left***

    Boruc
    Robertson - Doherty - TAA
    Anderson - Sterling - Salah - Pogba - Almiron
    Jiminez - Aguero
    ____________________________________
    Button: Digne, AWB, Barnes

Anderson & Almiron stinking up the team, but obviously keeping for blank GW.
Got 8 players as it is now, any moves look sensible for FT or even a hit?

    Maybe Sterling + Aguero > Hazard + Vardy/Higuain?

    Appreciate any advice fellas 🙂

With no FH or WC left, I’d be tempted to just roll with your 8!

Yeah true, reckon i’m actually good to just roll with that tbh because rivals haven’t got that many, and just one of the top 4 still have FH chip left, and got most bases covered.

Cheers Amey, defo thinking of just rolling it in a week where mny will take hits anyway.

          Thank you mate
I needed © success just to feel good 😀
          Disastrous few gw's.
Aguero should have scored that free header @ the Start of the game.
          So you are bit unlucky.
But, having Sterling is also awesome.
Re your transfer i think you need to be careful as no WC/FH so Rolling Ft is best.

          GL mate.

Haha excellent pick! 😉 Misery GW after GW here too but sat inside 50k and just wanna bloody stay there now.
Aguero was indeed so unlucky, and B.Silva should have square a simple pass for him to tap in also! Ah well.
Having Sterling was great as it is anyway so all good, he gave me a pull away at teh top of my ML now 🙂
Agreed, quite set on rolling the free. GL to you too matey.

He stuck to his plan (cheap forwards, premium mids) all season - I'll give him that. But it's obvious from how many high profile FPL managers (Jay, The General, FML Duo, WGTA Tom, Az, Luke, Virg etc etc) are having rough seasons that luck can devastate the plans of even the most talented FPL managers.

This is just ridiculous. Seriously. All you have to do is look through mini-leagues and see a lot of the poor / suboptimal decision making to realise the trick is not to fluke a few awesome hauls / differentials, the trick is to avoid making too many clear and obvious mistakes in order to make your own luck. Every GW bad decisions are made and bad or good luck is experienced in varying amounts. But over 38 GWs, you should be able to own up to your season (good or bad) and say "sometimes I was lucky, sometimes I wasn't, I could've finished lower, I could've finished higher, but in the end I'm going to finish at least roughly where I deserve to".

Never change. Out of interest, have you taken some time to go through the seasons in detail of some managers in the top 1k who you feel are lucky casuals unlike yourself? I'd love to hear your thoughts on where all this 'luck' came from.

I'm on an absolute cold streak for captaincy selections - way, way below the captaincy returns of many others - and I've had some of the most frustrating results imaginable (Deulofeu 23 points first spot on my bench, Digne's 17 points first spot on my bench, owned Sterling for both his 21-pointers but VC on both occasions, ... it's a long list of 'what might've been'). Yet I'm still 305 points and 573k+ higher than you in OR.

So please tell me about all this luck I've had and how much better but unluckier you are?

I do need to do an episode of AZ's black box thinking on my season, that's true.

With 6 million plus players and thousands of variables on the pitch in each premier league game, anyone who doesn't think that they are at the mercy of Lady Luck is sadly mistaken.

Of course we're at the mercy of Lady Luck. It's a game, and every game in the world involves luck.

But if you think all the managers ahead of you are 'fluking it', then I'm afraid you're the one who is sadly mistaken.

When people are winning and riding the wave, it’s skill. When they’re down, it’s bad luck. I don’t like that. It’s an easy kop out for poor decision making. I had an horrendous run of 11 reds or so in 13 weeks recently, never once blamed luck. I look back like an autopsy. Selling Salah just before monster haul, Aub over Kun during Kuns mega form. Going Martial when Pog and Rash went on fire. All bad decisions. The only genuine bad luck was Chelsea not getting a DGW25 and City getting one. 2 late injury time goals in the FA cup made that happen, out of my control. Ruined me being City-less and having 2 Chelsea.

Agreed. A lot of it comes down to your own ability to apply critical thinking regardless of the circumstances or successes / failures you're experiencing. I know I've made some bad decisions this season, and they are the ones I spend my time thinking about and trying to work out if I can learn from them. I don't revel in the good decisions too much as I already know exactly why I made them and I'd probably make them again. But the poor ones, where it's more than just hindsight, and you realise you did push the risk-taking too far or you did overthink it - those are the areas I want to improve. I brought in Arnie a few weeks ago because I convinced myself he was back now, had incredible fixtures, and was a huge differential with the upside to match. Looking back, I was too hasty and I should've waited for at least a smidgeon of evidence. That was a mistake, and I'll consider for next time.

But if you spend your whole time thinking the game is out to get you and it's just back luck, I don't believe you're as likely to get better as someone else.

The game is about probability. If you maximize the probability of doing well (by making +EV decisions) then you’ll consistently achieve high ranks.

Consistently getting top 10k or 1k finishes is the mark of a good player, not having one amazing seasonz Imo the difference between 1k and OR1 is often mostly luck, but getting to OR 1k consistently (and the emphasis on consistently) is about skill.

I definitely agree with you in the most part. My only addition would be that there is also consistency within a season, and that doesn't get spoken about much. Even if you're a 'one-season wonder' (certainly on paper that's what I am), I still think you should be permitted to express what you're doing differently this season compared to your less successful ones. For me, there's no consistency in my history, but a lot of consistency in my season - I've never scored 100+ points and I haven't actually had many huge scores about average or run of green arrows, but what I have done is avoid disastrous GWs almost entirely. I don't believe that's a fluke because I've considered all my transfers extremely careful, I've put the time in, I've looked at stats and watched recent performances of every player before I bring them in, and I've played the fixtures as heavily as you possibly could (especially with premium assets).

Even so, I agree with you that it needs to be achieved season on season before any major claims can be made. I have enormous respect for any manager consistently achieving top 10k or with multiple top 1k finishes.

When I see a person with a great OR with a less than stellar history, I think it could be two things: (1) a flukey season or (2) the person has only started taking the game seriously this season or has just figured out the game this season. The implication is that from this person will start achieving good ranks in future seasons from now on.

Judging by your comments, I would think you are the latter.

I also value how people speak about the game (i.e. their philosophy, play style), regardless of their rank. This is why I didn’t join the mob at the beginning of the season criticising David’s appointment to the Scoutcast despite his bad history. He spoke intelligently and had the right ideas about the game and that was enough.

Btw congrats on your rank, amazing effort.

Of course he is an FPL genius if ‘genius’ is defined by the fact he does the basics correct and uses sound reasoning to get a mix of players that are most likely to give him the most points .... then after all of that luck comes into it 🙂

Simply put, using all the information available in a better way than most will put you in the top 20k, luck will then decide where you finish in the top 20k

Anyone sitting at 500k at this stage in the season has picked the wrong players and not used all the information available in a better way than most

The elite players struggling this year seem to believing their own hype, searching for that different formula to play to the crowds and are not doing the basics right ... simples really 🙂

100% this. There's no excuse for being 500k or higher at this point in the season in my opinion. In that spot, you've made a lot of poor decisions. Likewise there's no denying that if you're high up the rankings, a number of things have gone your way as well as good decision making.

Cheers mate but definitely undecided. In fact, more likely to go the uncommon route. Thinking TC32, WC34, FH35, BB36. Pros; my team very well set for 31/33. Would have 9 doublers in 32 for -4. Get to use TC in 32 and later FH allows 3 Pool on WC. Cons:;no Pogba in 32, no City defence in 32, have to ride out IB after 31 for 2 weeks injury free.

I like it. Obvious worry is getting through 32 with no City Def and in particular, a United striker. I think what to do come gw34 is being overlooked on here. Liverpool fixtures and the 35 fixtures themselves are all tricky. Maybe even 3 Brighton on a WC with a BB36, if they get a 3rd DGW, could be good.

The two problems I think you have -
1 - your current team, without serious transfers, is poor for 31 and you have no guarantee all will start
2 - You may have 9 doublers for 32, but not the best 9 available

You are being dragged down in your thinking because of your TV, just play the best strategy to get the most points ... and in your heart you know what that is already 😉

I'll have this team after taking a hit for GW31, what do you think?
    Fabianski
    Pereira Robertson VVD Luiz
    Hazard Salah Fraser Brooks
    Vardy Barnes

Do the FH31 people really have a big advantage over me?

    1. Amey

Well TBH I haven't had to to take any hits, guys like Barnes have actually helped me, Digne to Pereira was one big mistake though..

Thinking about it now, Using TC on Kun yesterday wasn't that much of a disaster.. even the TC on Kun in GW25 got 14 more points, and I've benched 14-15 points with guys like Brooks this season and felt much less worried..

tc is a lottery ! 75 points on sanchez 2 season ago, i think not even 10 on my tc last season cant even remember who he was 🙂

TC is such an unreliable luck-based chip anyways. Not nearly as powerful as the rest
