Who do we reckon gets Watfords RB spot? Kiko or Janmaat?

Gracia doesn’t even make that decision during the season let alone now

      Kiko was preferred last season.

      Personally I wouldn't go near Watford's defence.

I'm on this 4-3-3 at the moment...

    Ryan (Button)

VVD - Robertson - Coleman - Zinchenko (Kelly)

Salah - Sterling - Norwoord (Grealish, Hayden)

    Vardy - Wilson - Calvert-Lewin

Bit worries about the three weak midfielders, although think Norwood could come good this year. Calvert-Lewin is probably a choice I won't be brave enough to pull off come Gameweek 1.

The 3 weak mids plus DCL is massively risky. Personally im sticking to 1 liverpool defender incase I want to bring in mane/firm to go with Salah in a few weeks

Wolves closing in on Patrick Cutrone. Not seen him myself but i've seen some rave about how good he is/will be

Insanely cheap too at around £20m, Wolves good at that. If they sign one top class defender to go beside Boly and Coady they will be challenging for UCL

That will be very hard to do whilst competing in a Europa campaign. They need to bring in more depth so they can challenge on both fronts

He isnt that good, despite being branded Milan's wonder boy and being given plenty of chances he was always in the shade of Higuain and then Piatek.

In my opinion Wolves would be better of buying PL proven striker.

No, been injured but now close to fitness. Thing is, if not Holding, Mustafi. If he's breathing, surely he starts?
At 4.5 he's for my bench anyway. I'll put him in my starting line up v Newcastle and no worries if he doesn't make it.

Emery talked him up as one of their new captains, so he's clearly in his plans, just a bit concerned he's been out for a long, long time, no pre season minutes etc.

Yeh, as I say, I'm getting him for the bench anyway, so if he sits out a GW or 2 no worries. He does seem to be a key figure in defence when ready, and a 4.5 at a top(ish) club is quite a scoop.

Personally I dont get the Azpi pick, considering their fixtures. Also Zinc and Origi are transfers waiting to happen. Perez also in a new club, at history suggests it might take a while for him to adapt properly to new team mates, coach, playing style, fans ++.

Have you actually seen Chelsea’s fixtures!! ......3 reds in first 15 games and 1 of those is at home. Zinc will start as Mendy out until the end of Sept and I have cash ITB for Origi to the “settled” Chelsea forward after first couple of weeks....that’s why we have transfers. Perez and fans what has that got to do with it?.

Yeah Ive seen the fixtures. They play at OT, and then they play agains Leicester. After that its OK to consider them imo, but if you believe he will do well from the start go for it.

Ok I double checked now. They play Man Utd, Leicester, Liverpool and Wolves in their first 6. And you consider that good fixtures?

I also don't get people jumping on Chelsea saying they've got great fixtures. From GW7, sure - but until then it's a clear avoid for me while they get their house in order.

None of them are that expensive so even a couple of price rises wouldn't be absolutely devastating.

People just see red and don't think about it. United, Leicester and Wolves all have so-so defences, so attacks can prosper. Leicester and Wolves have pretty lethal attacks, so defences are vulnerable. Ignore the simplistic 1-4 ratings and colour codings when assessing upcoming fixtures and look at the actual teams faced.

He's very good and a very nice long-term prospect if not particularly explosive. Look at how many points he quietly accumulated last season.

      • 8 Years

I thought siggy was must have but after reading good article on “out of the blocks” the other day, I’ve switched to Richarlison. Also, someone made a good point that although siggy is on pens, he’s actually not that prolific

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

That's why I'm saying he's slow and steady. One tactic could be to start with Rich and switch to Siggy when you think Rich has peaked. Prob with Rich is he's just finished a tournament and is on holiday, so I don't know if he'll be up to speck on the training ground.

Thoughts on this? Fancy having atleast 1x non template punt player, which is Haller, who can easily cvhange to whichever Chelsea forward gets ths spot if Haller doesnt work out..

    Ederson (4.0)
    TAA - VVD - Digne - Zinchenko (4.0)
    Salah - Sterling - Perez - Moura (4.5)
    Haller - Adams/DCL/Wesley/6.0

    1. Shatner's Bassoon
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Feels like slightly too many compromises in mid/attack due to the superheavy defence.

Would probably knock Zinch to a 4.5 and/or Digne to Coleman, and then move 6.0 striker to at least a 6.5 spot where there are much better options.

Don't mind the Haller shout - he's on my watchlist ATM. Have got Wilson from the start so it's an easy move to get him if he bangs (happy to give him MCI/bri to scope him out).

Moura's in my side at the minute as well but I'm not sure I'll end up with him...

I mean, the names in isolation.
De Gea, Pogba, Sanchez, Martial, Rashford, even Lukaku are all capable of playing for any top european club.

Even Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, and Shaw - at times those names have all been highly coveted.

I'm looking at it as a team, how United can expect to have control in games against top quality opposition, with McTominay, Matic and Pogba as their main central midfield options is beyond me.

Liverpools midfield trio are in a completely different league IMO. Fabinho, Henderson and Wijnaldum are all brilliant players, and kinda proved it last season no?

                      You're right, of course.

I'm just saying Pogba is the most expensive midfielder in the world (I think that's still correct) and in theory in his prime, age wise.

Matic has won the the PL, and a very capable player.

Henderson is often criticised as a sideways passer, not especially effective going forward, not that fast.

I'm just trying to say the gulf in class, in theory/on paper, isn't as radical as it the league position may suggest.

El Mo was superb in the Play-off final, but his positioning is suspect at times. I imagine Guilbert will get the nod GW1. He’s impressed in preseason and chipped in with a couple of assists. Keep an eye on the Leipzig friendly tho, that should tell us more.

Thanks I was siding towards tielemans for one position, I quite like the fraser and Norwood combo. I think Norwood could go under the radar early what with his set piece and pass completion rate etc.

In that case if you go with Tielemans and Norwood, you've got an extra 0.5 to get VVD rather than risk the 5.5 being rotated.

Yeah good point, like that idea, do you not think Fraser will outscore Tielemans early on due to fixtures. Klopp usually likes to settle his team, I reckon whoever partners VVD will keep the position early unless they make an error? What are your thoughts?

do you think that is based on how well he ended last season? Gomez looked great early doors. Guess I can wait for the remaining friendlies to decide? If I choose brooks over fraser I could upgrade to VVD, although not sure Brooks will outscore or even tread water with Fraser?

Yes, Klopp said he was outstanding in the run in last season, so no reason for him to lose his spot.
He started the friendly last night, in what looked like a first choice line up.

...as I say, mids at that price are all a gamble early on.

Thanks for the advice, like you say with both of them priced collectively at 12.5m i can jump on whatever 6-6.5 midfielders are hot once season started. Key for me is my set and forgets of Salah, Sterling, Kane, TAA the rest can be moved around.

For me it's a big yes if we get any reasonable indications pre GW1 that he will start the season ahead of Aurier. I don't care if it's a transfer down the line, I'll worry about that later, but if I'm 80% sure he plays at home to Villa he's probably in my team. Massive chance of a CS and has great assist potential. Wouldn't be shocked to see him haul and would be a brilliant differential. We have transfers and subs for a reason.

I'm of the opinion "yes", but it doesn't seem overly popular. I think most are waiting for Spurs to play City in GW2, then made a judgement call on KWP or Aurier.

At 5m, jumping on one should pay off - that is if Poch doesn't continue to rotate his fullbacks.

I see it as a risk worth taking if you support it with a 4.5m 4th/5th defender with decent enough fixtures early on e.g. O'Connell, Targett etc. Gamble that KWP starts GW1 (based on reports up to as close to deadline as possible), play your backup defender with a good home fixture GW2, and hope KWP has done enough to hold his spot for GW3. If he loses his place straight away, you probably know who the first choice right back is out Aurier and Foyth and can easily make the switch if you want to. It all hinges in what we hear closer to deadline, but he's in my draft for now.

Personally is a no at least to start

I think those defender slots are better filled with premiums early doors (if honestly love to be able to field a back 6 at the minute!)

I can totally see the appeal though, and post wildcard there could be some very destructive XI's possible if the likes of KWP, Dunk, Gibson (4.0) emerge as nailed and/or get transfers etc and the attacking bargains become clearer

For anyone interested in serious GW1 goal hunting, and prepared to worry about future planning later on (or happy to play an early WC), I just came up with this ultra attacking team to start off with:

    Pope
    TAA - Digne - KWP/AMN/Ake
    Salah (C) - Sterling - Moura - Richarlison
    Wilson - Deulofeu - Origi

    4.0 - O'Connell - Dendonkcer - 4.0

With 0.5m in the bank for dealing with any GW2/3 issues e.g. Origi to 6.0m forward like Wesley, Moura to 8m mid like Bilva etc.

I'm personally not too bothered about setting up a team for the medium to longer term. The game is all about points, grab them when you can and make optimal transfers when you need to. I'm very tempted by this team. Hit one or two big hauls from the differentials and you're off to an amazing start.

My current attempt at something similar, Auba + Laca in contention too - Sane -> Son GW3 and this team is potentially long term

      Pope (Button)
      VVD Zinchenko KWP
      Salah Sterling Sane Moura Pereyra
      Wilson Origi (Greenwood)

I like it, strong team and superb early fixtures. That's a team that can get a real jump on the competition in the first few gameweeks. It only takes big performances from the likes of Moura and Origi at home to promoted teams and we would be flying.

Last season my rival was constantly "planning ahead" while I was constantly targeting immediate fixtures. Imo the latter strategy is how you try to separate yourself from the pack.

Always get twitchy when trying to optimise things for a very short window... It almost veers into the territory of bookies/gambling as literally anything can happen in a single game week, the amount of variance in a one (or even two) game week window is off the charts

But if it was part of a broader strategy involving use of both the bench boost and the wildcard after 1-2 weeks then I could see how it could be attractive to some folks

I get where you're coming from, but that's pretty much how I played my entire last season and worked extremely well. You can call it a risky strategy, or you can look at like the more decisions you make with the most available information, the more you're able to use your knowledge, skill and eye test to get ahead. If you simply set a team up in GW1 determined to see it last you through to a later Wildcard without taking any hits, you're essentially accepting a lot of players you originally selected with the least amount of information about the new season.

I would actually rather plan to make transfers. I'm going to make them anyway, so why not just get the best players with the best fixtures for up to GW1 and GW2 fixtures then reassess on the go. I can already see a massive number of GW3 Wildcards happening as the fixtures swing early, the preferred starting 11s will become clearer, etc.

Each to their own though! That's the beauty of FPL.

Oh yeah it's absolutely not a guarantee of failure, or anywhere near it - and it can obviously work quite well at times

But generally the shorter the window you optimise for, the more you move towards the 'betting shop' end of the scale... Where if you get really good at predicting single game week performance, it would be much more lucrative to use that knowledge to win fortunes with the bookies rather than (or in addition to 🙂 ) Using it to get a high OR 🙂

Risk vs reward like most things in FPL, I suppose. That's just the way I like to play, but I do see why others would be averse to that kind of risk from the get-go.

I wish I had made some of those bets you're talking about last season, it would have been quite lucrative. But I did manage to win a rather substantial first prize in a big FPL cash league, so all was not lost.

Still, the other side of the coin is that FPL offers the chance at 'risk-free' predictions. It's fun when you're right, but you don't lose money when you're wrong.

The other thing I'd say is that if you had a Free Hit every single GW, you would probably win FPL. So there is definitely an advantage to making short-term decisions based on the best players with the best fixtures at the time. I see no reason not to approach FPL with that mindset where possible, using the least number of hits required to get the best team for the next set of fixtures, without looking too far ahead (any more than about 3 GWs is pointless imo).

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years

In an environment where you have a free hit every week there is definitely an advantage to making short term decisions on the best players with the best fixtures at the time. In the same way that there is a definite advantage to doing as many bets as possible in a bookmakers where you don't have to pay for losing bets 🙂

In the environment where you don't have a free hit each week however, generally speaking ( but NOT always) the more short term your decisions, the more you open yourself to single game week variance - which often makes a mockery of the best laid plans of mice & men 🙂

The ideal planning horizon I have found is definitely more than one game week, and probably (but NOT always) less than around 5-6...

But in the long run if one is good at regularly predicting single gameweek performance, they can probably arrange their FPL team from one's yacht in Monaco 🙂

There are 3 players in my team above that I would almost certainly want to trade out by GW3/4: Origi, Moura, the 5m defender if not starting. So that's only 3 positions I'm worried about, and transfers will let me jump to other emerging options. The advantage is having differentials that actually have a great chance of scoring a lot of points when they play, rather than just getting in differentials for the sake of it.

People said it was pointless getting Moura in at the end of last season when Kane went down, but he was virtually guaranteed to start against the worst team in the league who had been conceding goals for fun. He scored a hat-trick. When the opportunities come along, I say grab them and hope for the best. We always have transfers to deal with future issues.

I really want to but I feel it takes too much away from a strong starting 11. I look at the bench and I don't see a lot of points. How about you?

Exact same. Shifted funds out of my bench to turn King into Lacazette so I got him and Auba now. Much happier.

Start with Sterling and a double up in midfield will be easy if you want it.

        I think this is it.

Reluctant to go with Aguero from beginning, and can easily get D/Bilva in.

I think Sterling & Bilva will be the way to go this year, in terms of most value

I'd be surprised if that move happens with Douglas Luiz, almost certainly, being announced from Man City on Monday.

It might be one of those situations that even Poch himself doesn't yet know and that he'll monitor on a training session by session basis or opponent by opponent basis etc

I'm not convinced Poch will ever have a preferred choice, I see plenty of rotation.

    Welcome back all.
How's this looking as a starting point?

    Foster
    Robbo / Digne / Dunk
    Salah / Sterling / Siggy / Brooks / Zaha
    King / Deulo

Ryan / Kelly / El Moh / McGoldrick

    Concerns
    - BHA double-up
    - WAT defence
    - no big-hitters up front

You’ve got 8 players in there that could bite you in the balls.

Stats are with Wilson over King.
      Deuleufo could be a troll.
      Too much Brighton.
      Etc

        Yep, worried about Deulofeu.
Probably going to swap both keepers.
King on pens though, with VAR could be interesting.
