The changes to bonus points in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season

Bonus points will be allocated slightly differently in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season, which could change the way managers set up their teams.

These additional avenues for points are still derived from passing, tackles, saves and shots but the parameters in securing them have been tweaked.

In this article, we assess where the changes are and what implications they will have in 2019/20.

Passing bonus points

Passing bonus is often something that Manchester City defenders enjoy in Sky Sports Fantasy Football

In possession-based teams such as Manchester City, defenders and holding midfielders often enjoy a lot of the ball and rack up a hefty amount of passes, earning valuable bonus points throughout a campaign.

These remain the same coming into 2019/20 and will be scored as follows:

  • Passing tier one: 60 passes – count for last season: 351
  • Passing tier two: 70 passes – count for last season: 484

Tackle bonus points – Tier two

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could benefit from tweaks to the tackle bonus in 2019/20

This season, tackles are becoming more important, with tier two bonus points being reduced from five to four, making the margin only one from tier one to two.

An impressive 644 tier one bonus points were collected by players in 2018/19, with the possibility of reaching tier two now increasing with this new rule change.

New Manchester United signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka could do well in this department, having made 129 tackles for Crystal Palace last year, the most out of any defender.

As you can see from the data below, if the 2018/19 campaign was scored in the same way as the new season, a much higher number of defensive players would have received tier two tackle bonus.

2019/20

  • Tackles tier one: Three tackles – count for last season: 644
  • Tackles tier two: Four tackles – count for last season: 223

2018/19

  • Tackles tier two: Five tackles – count for last season: 66

Save bonus points

Save points are a big part of Fabianski’s appeal

When selecting a goalkeeper for your team, there is no doubt that you have to take their clean sheet rate into account, as that can bring in the most points, but that is not their only way to score.

Conceding goals may end up costing you points so but save points can often offset these deductions.

This is another department where the parameters have been shifted, increasing the potential for goalkeepers to score bonus points for saves.

2019/20

  • Saves tier one: Three saves – count for last season: 238
  • Saves tier two: Five saves -count for last season: 118

2018/19

  • Saves tier one: Five saves – count for last season: 118
  • Saves tier two: Seven saves – count for last season: 43

Shot bonus points

Mohamed Salah could enjoy more points this season as a result of tweaks to shots on target bonus

This is perhaps one of the most important sections to receive a tweak, which should allow premium forwards to compete with their expensive counterparts in defence.

To reach tier one shots on target bonus, players now only need to record two accurate goal attempts per game.

Additionals were recorded from shots on only 157 occasions last season but under the new decreased threshold for this year, 667 bonus points from both tiers would have been earned.

Strikers pose the greatest threat of scoring and assisting, as well as earning Sky Sports Man of the Match awards, but lowering the bonus points here adds an extra dimension.

It now means that researching shots on target can add further power to picking the best forward players.

2019/20

  • Shots tier one: Two shots on target – count for last season: 515
  • Shots tier two: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152

2018/19

  • Shots tier one: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152
  • Shots tier two: Five shots on target – count for last season: Five

Man of the Match

While the game-makers at Sky Sports Fantasy Football have increased the chances that players will score bonus points, the Man of the Match award has been somewhat nerfed.

In previous years, options deemed the stand-out performer in their fixture were handed a five-point bonus but in 2019/20 it will be just three.

Often, players who score one of the key goals or two and above in a single game end up being the Man of the Match.

By restricting the points haul to three, there will be less of a gap that can be extended by having particular players.

Don’t underestimate the point-pulling power of bonus points and the impact that it can have on your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team.

They may not have changed dramatically, but that having players in your side that pick them up throughout the season may be just what you need to propel you to the top.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2019/20 is bigger and better than ever. Get your team in early and read the latest news and features as you make your selection leading up to Friday, August 9.

Can’t find the cash to get Kane in without tearing my team apart and settling for average players.

Thoughts on Lucas Moura? Likely to get game time given that Son’s suspended?

You're basically betting on a brace/hattrick in the first game.

He's unlikely to get anything against City and will turn into Son in GW3

So it's all on the first game..plus you've signed up to burning a transfer on him, so you'll want sizeable return.

      Not for me

      Lundstram.

Kelly too highly owned, likely to drop to 3.9m early on making him harder to shift

It's based on percentage, the ownership doesn't matter. The one who plays less is likely to drop first.

If United sign Dybala & Maguire, is this how you’d expect the line up?

    DDG
    AWB Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
    Matic/Scotty
    Pogba Dybala
    James Rashford Martial

If United sign Dybala, Maguire & Bruno:

    DDG
    AWB Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
    Bruno Pogba
    James Dybala Martial
    Rashford

    Or

    DDG
    AWB Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
    Matic/Scotty
    Bruno Pogba
    Dybala Rashford Martial

Basically trying to understand whether James is a viable option and whether he would remain that way once all 3 tanager rumours are cleared up.

Solskjaer likes a 4-2-3-1 so I'd assume this if Dybala & Maguire:

      DDG
      AWB Lindelöf Maguire Shaw
      Matic/Scotty Pogba
      James Dybala Martial
      Rashford

I can't see both Dybala and Fernandes - both would essentially want to play in the same position so it will be one or the other (or neither, which seems equally likely given Woodward's involvement). But if one does sign, it's very likely to mean Pogba dropping deeper.

Seen a few reports of Dybala playing RW which would threaten James' minutes, but cannot seeing him doing that as it didn't work out for him at Juve playing there.

      1. Zladan
        • 6 Years

The thing is, United we’re in for both Maguire and Bruno before the Dybala-Rom swap was a thing.

However I’m not convinced any of the 3 will go ahead.

They're stalling on Fernandes and Dybala would be an upgrade on Fernandes - Fernandes has played well in the Portuguese league whereas Dybala has experience of playing in the far more competitive Serie A and right the way through the CL!

In terms of them chasing Fernandes first, I very much doubt Utd thought Juve would be stupid enough to suggest they take Luk and give Utd Dybala! If they'd gone for Dybala off their own back I'm almost certain they'd have been quoted EUR 100m or more, whereas it seems that Fernandes is available for EUR 60-80m

          This.
Maguire is a definite improvement, but not £80-£90M worth.
Dybala wants champions league so would join begrudgingly which OGS wont want

Ole is fond of the 4-2-3-1 formation and also used it in pre season. So I think whatever happens, James will play at RW! He is the player with maximum minutes in the pre season and has been really impressive!

Apologies if this question has already been discussed but what are your views on heaton starting at villa? Does he have a better chance than what they have now. Might be a good second keeper to have? Any views

Adam Hopcroft, highly successful FPL manager and Villa fan, says Heaton will be straight into the team.

Yes I can only see him going straight in he’s been playing a bit in pre-season and has premier league experience.

Innit. Heaton is a proven brilliant keeper and the only reason he didn't start at Burnley is because Burnley are in the bizarre situation where they have two very good keepers. Heaton would improve any side outside of the top six. He starts.

I don't understand why so many people are asking if he's first choice, it seems obvious.

Thanks everyone. I know how is a good keeper but steer did well for them last year and the fact heaton is 33 is the reason I asked the question. I think I agree he is pretty much nailed on. Thanks fellas.

He's been signed to play, but its hard on Steer who has done really well for us. Wouldn't be too surprised if the latter started GW1.

True... but you also thought so little of Steer at on point last season that you loaned him to Sunderland in League One (and only because of injuries to other options did he come back).

Steer was loaned out by Steve Bruce, and surely its more important what he did when he returned? If it wasn't for Steer, we probably wouldn't have been promoted.

    Does anyone like this?

    Pope / (Button)
    Alexander-Arnold / Robertson / Digne / Walker-Peters / (Lundstram)
Salah / De Bruyne / Tielemans / Barkley / (Dendoncker)
    Kane / Wilson / (Greenwood)

In light of the Laporte news.
Should I go with Ederson and 2 4.5 defenders rotating in a back 3.

    Or 4.5 keeper and stones?
    Cheers for any thoughts

He’s picked up a knock in training ruled out of the game on Sunday but not West Ham yet but don’t know if he’s worth the risk now.

I’m not sure Zinchenko will be nailed for long enough, I’ve wanted to pick him but have this nagging doubt. Which is why I plumped for Laporte now I don’t know at all but definitely want city defence.

Hayden looks a good option for a 4.5 midfielder. Watched him vs Hibs the other night and he consistently got forward around the box with Shelvey and Longstaff sitting back. - From a Sunderland fan as well.

What do you think of Daniel James as a differential? 6 mil for a United forward who is surely going to start!

Should start is very dangerous hoping he gets some assists and not just pre assists. Gets fouled an awful lot.

Siggy is a patience pick. Too many knee jerk managers, so think his price falls unless he scores in first game.
If they sign Moise Kean it would maybe change people's minds.
