The changes to bonus points in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season

Bonus points will be allocated slightly differently in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season, which could change the way managers set up their teams.

These additional avenues for points are still derived from passing, tackles, saves and shots but the parameters in securing them have been tweaked.

In this article, we assess where the changes are and what implications they will have in 2019/20.

Passing bonus points

Passing bonus is often something that Manchester City defenders enjoy in Sky Sports Fantasy Football

In possession-based teams such as Manchester City, defenders and holding midfielders often enjoy a lot of the ball and rack up a hefty amount of passes, earning valuable bonus points throughout a campaign.

These remain the same coming into 2019/20 and will be scored as follows:

  • Passing tier one: 60 passes – count for last season: 351
  • Passing tier two: 70 passes – count for last season: 484

Tackle bonus points – Tier two

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could benefit from tweaks to the tackle bonus in 2019/20

This season, tackles are becoming more important, with tier two bonus points being reduced from five to four, making the margin only one from tier one to two.

An impressive 644 tier one bonus points were collected by players in 2018/19, with the possibility of reaching tier two now increasing with this new rule change.

New Manchester United signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka could do well in this department, having made 129 tackles for Crystal Palace last year, the most out of any defender.

As you can see from the data below, if the 2018/19 campaign was scored in the same way as the new season, a much higher number of defensive players would have received tier two tackle bonus.

2019/20

  • Tackles tier one: Three tackles – count for last season: 644
  • Tackles tier two: Four tackles – count for last season: 223

2018/19

  • Tackles tier two: Five tackles – count for last season: 66

Save bonus points

Save points are a big part of Fabianski’s appeal

When selecting a goalkeeper for your team, there is no doubt that you have to take their clean sheet rate into account, as that can bring in the most points, but that is not their only way to score.

Conceding goals may end up costing you points so but save points can often offset these deductions.

This is another department where the parameters have been shifted, increasing the potential for goalkeepers to score bonus points for saves.

2019/20

  • Saves tier one: Three saves – count for last season: 238
  • Saves tier two: Five saves -count for last season: 118

2018/19

  • Saves tier one: Five saves – count for last season: 118
  • Saves tier two: Seven saves – count for last season: 43

Shot bonus points

Mohamed Salah could enjoy more points this season as a result of tweaks to shots on target bonus

This is perhaps one of the most important sections to receive a tweak, which should allow premium forwards to compete with their expensive counterparts in defence.

To reach tier one shots on target bonus, players now only need to record two accurate goal attempts per game.

Additionals were recorded from shots on only 157 occasions last season but under the new decreased threshold for this year, 667 bonus points from both tiers would have been earned.

Strikers pose the greatest threat of scoring and assisting, as well as earning Sky Sports Man of the Match awards, but lowering the bonus points here adds an extra dimension.

It now means that researching shots on target can add further power to picking the best forward players.

2019/20

  • Shots tier one: Two shots on target – count for last season: 515
  • Shots tier two: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152

2018/19

  • Shots tier one: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152
  • Shots tier two: Five shots on target – count for last season: Five

Man of the Match

While the game-makers at Sky Sports Fantasy Football have increased the chances that players will score bonus points, the Man of the Match award has been somewhat nerfed.

In previous years, options deemed the stand-out performer in their fixture were handed a five-point bonus but in 2019/20 it will be just three.

Often, players who score one of the key goals or two and above in a single game end up being the Man of the Match.

By restricting the points haul to three, there will be less of a gap that can be extended by having particular players.

Don’t underestimate the point-pulling power of bonus points and the impact that it can have on your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team.

They may not have changed dramatically, but that having players in your side that pick them up throughout the season may be just what you need to propel you to the top.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2019/20 is bigger and better than ever. Get your team in early and read the latest news and features as you make your selection leading up to Friday, August 9.

whoever plays right back for Spurs will be a 5.0 option, that's hard to pass up

Spurs always rotate fullbacks, but for 5.0 (and not 5.5 or 6.0 as in previous years), I'm willing to risk that for sure!

    How's this?

    Heaton
    Robertson vanDijk Zinchenko Coleman
    Salah Sterling Fraser Perez
    Wilson Adams

    Gunn Dendoncker Lundstram Greenwood

    1.0m ITB

Think Southampton/Villa rotations is pretty good for the opening weeks. But to be honest, don't really mind Heaton as a set and forget.

Plan WAS to do Fraser+Wilson->Son+Wolves striker for GW3, BUT, seeing the fixture congestion that comes up AFTER GW3, starting to rethink that.

    Thoughts on my team? Cheers

haha, you mean the Spurs 5.0 defender comment? nah, what I meant was when we get a clearer picture of WHO the starting Spurs full back is, then yeah, I'd go in.

If the Spurs fullback doesn't seem viable then I will go King to Che and then the 5.0 defender up to Coleman myself.
On Heaton 4.5 myself think he will be this year's Fab

Is Heaton at Villa a good option? I'm not sure whether to go Ryan, Burnley GK, Gun or Heaton. Heaton has great fixtures, the bookies seem so give Villa a decent chance of staying up compared to the other teams I just mentioned.

    Any thoughts?

I'm going with either Heaton or Pope. Probably Heaton now since Villa have better opening fixtures and I'm going with a non-playing second keeper so need a GK that starts GW1

I think he is, great keeper in an exciting team. Seems very Brad Friedel-esque signing, although he is 3/4 years younger than Brad when he signed! Think 8m for keeper of Heaton's caliber is an absolute steal.

He's been signed to be our long term no1, but to those eyeing him up with a non playing 4.0, be careful. He's a fairly late arrival, the most he'll play is one friendly against Leipzig at the weekend.

Steer really impressed last season, without him we probably wouldn't be having this conversation, and I wouldn't be that surprised if he started GW1. Could be wrong, but just keep an eye out for info from Smith over the next week or so.

Heaton is a quality addition, Tammy had to be replaced so Wesley makes sense, and Mings was already there.

After that they all look potentially very good, but I agree it'll take a while to bed in.
I'd be especially worried about lack of familiarity in the back 4, if it's going to Guilbert-Engels-Mings-Targett with Luiz in front. Heaton could be very busy.

Wouldn't fancy them to be as bad as Fulham were though, it seems a little more cohesive and though through.

This is a good point, and its why I wouldn't be surprised to see Steer, or El Mohamady or Taylor start against Spurs, simply to keep a bit of cohesion. Douglas Luiz is still in Brazil, so the midfield will most likely be the same as the Play-off win - Hourihane, McGinn and Grealish. Can understand the comparisons to Fulham but a lot of the signings have been a necessity as so many have left.

Yeah, would probably be wise of Smith to keep Elmo in for a bit - cheers for the info on Luiz, didn't know that.

I think the Fulham comparisons are lazy, but the concern is valid. Hoping Villa stay up and can push on from there.

But it’s risky business, I wouldn’t be surprised them to see feck it all up. They have a brand new team now

The case of James: Have been watching all Man Utd friendlies so far. He seems to fit Oles style of play and has gotten a lot of preseason minutes therefor I think he will start.

He can also play several positions which is good, it may also be a curse since he can because of that be used as an impact sub. However, I think he will start the season in the first XI and based on his performance we'll see if that continues.

6.0 is cheap for an attcking starter in Man Utd, however his stats in the championship from an fpl persective aren't that great (4 goals, 7 assists). He is quick, fairly technical but seems to more often pass than shoot when he gets into a goalscoring position.

I don't know why so many people are going double Liverpool defense its so risky because Norwich could easily score. Before people say its the attacking returns, Liverpools front three may not do as good as usual. Mane won't play, Bobby prob won't either and Salah hasn't looked the best at the minute. There's better places to spend the money rather than a second Liverpool defender in my opinion.

I don’t know what you mean by Norwich could easily score. Surely any team could easily score against anyone? This is the same Liverpool that finished with 90+ league points, won the champions league and kept numerous clean sheets. But obvs if you don’t think they will perform this year based on something you’ve seen then fine stay clear of Liverpool for now and see how they start

Yes any team could score against anyone, I'm arguing why double up on a defense if you concede its a double hit pretty much. I understand its the same Liverpool team that did that but did they do that the season before? Could they do it again? Yes but it's a new season anything could happen.

Well ya I understand that but it's always risky to have a double up in the back.

I would say it's risky in any given week, but over a season Liverpool look well set to be in or around 20 clean sheets again. Leave them in there, take the points.

Much more risky over the season to get one and be transferring Chelsea/Spurs/United defenders in and out trying to catch their points

Also any team could easily score in any fixture by the same logic.

You said Norwich could easily score. If I was betting I would certainly say they bet on them not scoring.

Of course, but you're using this logic to go against double up Liverpool defence which in my view is flawed.

Anything can happen, but surely play the odds and you'll likely be rewarded in the long run. Otherwise you may as well get rid of Man City players in case they get don't score all season, after all anything can happen.

I'm suggesting cut losses have 1 not 2, spends funds further up the field.

It's a fair enough opinion and you won't be alone. Personally going for 2 in the long run but always open to adapt.

Mane might be less likely but I see Bobby and Salah starting against norwich, see no reason for them to not perform at close to their best

They've had a few weeks to themselves now, both looked alright against Lyon yesterday, by next friday I think they will be fit and ready

One reason might be that they started training three days ago and they only now have 9 days before the first game. Their match fitness and sharpness will not be anywhere near the rest of the squad, which then impacts team cohesion and structure. They've had 30mins and 45mins of preseason respectively. Doubt they will be anywhere near ready

You're missing the point of liverpool defenders. Plenty of CS granted. But they are assist and BPS magnets too. Excellent value.

    Kepa / (Button)
    TAA / Walker / Coleman / Walker Peters (4.0)
    Salah / KDB / B Silva / Tielemans / (Dendoncker)
    Kane / King / (Greenwood)

This is where I'm at with this Sterling-less squad. Feel like KDB and B Silva are good coverage in place of Sterling for City. Still have Salah and Kane as consistent Captains choices.

I am looking at one of these 5.5 keepers: Kepa, Pickford, Lloris.
Could also go TAA>VVD for an extra 0.5 to get a 6.0 keeper, or upgrade Coleman>Digne, or upgrade Tielemans to a 7.0 mid. But when I do that I always feel like this version looks best.

    Any suggestions?

Salah has been a permanent fixture in my team, but thought I would have a go at Salah-less draft

    Ryan
    TAA Laporte Cole
    Sterling Richarlison Pulisic Perez
    Kane Firmino Greenwood
    Button Cathcart Taylor Dendoncker

I watched Salah yesterday and I have major doubts

He was off the pace, not sharp, sluggish and give plenty of balls away

Yeah I was talking to a Liverpool mate, he was saying he hasn't looked great. And with Sterling and Kane looking very good pre-season and raring to go.

I wouldnt take yesterdays performance too seriously, he arrived at Melwood from his break the day before and so just had a bit of a run out yesterday, Man city game will give a lot more useful information if he starts
