Should FPL managers sell Aubameyang ahead of Arsenal’s tough fixture run?

Arsenal 2-1 West Ham United

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m), Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) | Michail Antonio (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m), Dani Ceballos (£5.5m) | Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Nketiah x3, Ceballos x2, Lacazette x1

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) is top of the charts for Fantasy Premier League transfers out ahead of Gameweek 3, with over 250,000 FPL bosses having offloaded the Gabon international since last Saturday’s deadline.

Modest returns in the opening two Gameweeks is one reason for the exodus but Arsenal’s upcoming fixture run is arguably the single biggest contributing factor, with the Gunners now facing five fixtures against sides who finished in the top half last season.

In nine meetings against these five clubs last season, Aubameyang delivered just two goals and one assist.

Even a player who consistently boasts one of the best goal conversion records in the division would struggle with his underlying numbers in these games: the premium midfielder managed only two shots on target (scoring both, naturally) and averaged less than one effort in the box per appearance.

Top half last season doesn’t necessarily mean top half this season, of course, and the jury is still out on a Sheffield United backline without the services of Dean Henderson (£5.5m).

Liverpool’s high defensive line was exposed by Leeds in Gameweek 1, meanwhile, and Aubameyang put Manchester City to the sword in the FA Cup semi-final in July.

Still, the fact remains that the Gunners’ Gameweek 3-7 opponents were all in the top six for fewest goals conceded in 2019/20.

Aubameyang will almost certainly bag at least one attacking return, maybe even a handful, in his upcoming five matches, but is he likely to outscore the premium assets from the other ‘big six’ clubs over the same timeframe?

And in how many of these fixtures would we realistically captain the Gabon international?

On paper, a premium midfielder exchange seems to be a straightforward decision – but FPL, as this weekend showed, may have other ideas.

ONE SHOT

Aubameyang was by some distance the most-captained FPL asset of Gameweek 2, with over two million Fantasy managers handing him the armband.

One solitary assist for Alexandre Lacazette‘s (£8.5m) opener was all that he could muster, with the Frenchman nodding home his teammate’s cross after just 24 minutes.

The expected avalanche of points failed to materialise as both player and club struggled to carve out chances, with Aubameyang’s only shot of the match coming from distance in the 90th minute.

There was mitigation for his own display though.

Aubameyang had cultivated a good understanding with Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.5m) down the left flank recently and he was without both of his comrades at the Emirates, with the former benched and the latter succumbing to an injury in the warm-up.

Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) and Sead Kolasinac (£4.9m) came into the side and although Saka “assisted the assister” for both of the hosts’ goals, the rapport simply wasn’t there between the left-sided trio for much of the game.

TIERNEY UPDATE
One statistic to rule them all

Mikel Arteta acknowledged a disjointed performance from his troops after full-time, saying:

I think we were a little bit lucky in certain moments, but we found a way in the end to win it and that’s the mentality I want from the team, to always believe that we can do it until the last moment, even when we have difficult games where suffer and make it very difficult for ourselves in certain positions.

But in the end, it’s three points and that’s what we’re here for. We will take some big notes because there are a lot of things to improve.

It’s very strange because we were talking with the staff today that they had their best week in terms of decision making, quality and execution with the ball by far since I joined the club, but then in the first 15 minutes, they gave the ball to the wrong colour too often. We need to improve on that and we know that we still have a lot of work to do here, but at least they kept trying and nobody tried to hide.

On Tierney’s injury, the Arsenal boss added:

Kieran is fine. He had a little muscular discomfort in the last few days. He tried today and worked in the warm-up but he wasn’t feeling comfortable today.

We believed that he was going to be fit but during the warm-up, in the last 10 minutes, he said he wasn’t feeling OK. We had to make a decision. We were prepared just in case and Kola came on and had a good game.

ANTONIO BACK AMONG THE GOALS

After an anticlimactic Gameweek 1, Michail Antonio (£6.4m) was back on the scoresheet at the Emirates.

Encouragingly, he was occupying the sorts of areas that led to his purple patch of form after lockdown ended in June.

His 44th-minute goal from a Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) cross came from inside the six-yard box and he had an excellent chance to add to that tally after the break, failing to make proper contact on an Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) delivery from close range.

Antonio then hit the bar with a header midway through the second half and saw a goalbound shot blocked in the subsequent melee.

West Ham’s awful upcoming fixture run will put many FPL managers off but few players could compete with Antonio’s underlying stats after lockdown ended and there were encouraging signs that he could recapture that form on Saturday.

MOYES GOES 3-4-3

With Mark Noble (£5.0m) injured, David Moyes called on Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) to replace him and turned to a 3-4-3 for the trip to north London.

While Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) were not at their best, Masuaku was excellent in a left wing-back role and West Ham delivered a much-improved display following their poor performance in Gameweek 1 – something to perhaps consider for those targeting assets who play the Hammers in weeks to come.

Moyes’ troops registered twice as many shots as their hosts, with their goal not coming under much threat after Lacazette’s opener – that is, until a lapse in concentration allowed Dani Ceballos (£5.5m) to set up Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) for Arsenal’s late winner.

Moyes said of his side’s display:

We were massively improved from last week. We made chances, played well, wanted to be as good as we could. But ultimately we are playing a form team. I am disappointed that we have not come away with a point at least.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno; Holding, Gabriel, Kolasinac; Bellerin, Ceballos, Xhaka, Saka (Luiz 89′); Willian (Pepe 64′), Lacazette (Nketiah 77′), Aubameyang.

West Ham United XI (3-4-3): Fabianski; Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Fredericks, Rice, Soucek, Masuaku (Anderson 85′); Bowen (Yarmolenko 83′), Antonio, Fornals (Haller 87′).

The last years you could always beat the casuals easily if you acted fast in the beginning and took advantage of price changes. Early wildcards were very powerful and could help you to get a good team value. As it is now, it's just no fun and no fairness anymore. Everyone has days to improve his team and the risk of making an early transfer is not rewarded anymore.

The game is still about points. Every season, you have more money than the top 50 but does it really matter?

I can understand the argument, but I played with a team value of 107m last year and that allows you to build a much stronger team.

maybe you need to become better at the game instead of moaning about changes that affect everyone equally?

Don't think it has anything to do with 'becoming better' at the game.
In FPL there are different ways to success. For me it was always very useful to have a high team value.

Sounds like it's just a more expensive team, not one that scored well for the price.

Objectively, given fixtures, this looks quite decent for GW3? 0.5 ITB

      Salah, KDB, Son, ASM*

      A) Good to go
      B) If ASM confirmed injured -4 to get Trossard/ Podence/ Klich/ Costa?
      C) ASM & Davies -> Saiss & 5.5m (-8)

Dunno about Zaha. Good form + great fixtures for awhile (Everton/Chelsea certainly aren't the most defensively sound teams around).

      Mccarthy Steer
      TAA Justin Taylor Ayling Lewis
      Auba Salah Barnes Soucek Bissouma
      Werner Martial DCL

This surely not worth a WC is it? No wolves my only real worry. Auba > Sterling this week I think.

Those of us with the ‘big’ front 2 of Werner and Martial have been heavily punished so far by them blanking and all the cheaper options going huge.

We get the points back this week... let’s go!

Think this is Martial’s last chance for me as I can see Jimi doing better than him over the next 5. He was absolutely abysmal against Palace as were the rest of his team.

      Werner, Zaha and Lamptey/Justin bench
      or.
      Werner, Rodriguez and Mitchell bench

Strongly thinking B as I need Everton cover and have a backline of Castagne, James and Saïss (4.5 or Mitchell rotation is fairly similar)

        RMT

        McCarthy(Ryan)
        TAA/Justin/Saiss/KWP(Vinagre)
        KDB/Hames/Salah/Son(Bissouma)
        Mitro/Werner(K. Davis)

0.3 ITB should be have been 0.5 ITB
Werner is due for a breakout game and WBA is just the game(hopefully)

        Is there a fiddle?
Werner, has double the transfers out than any striker, yet immune to price drops?
If werner doesn't go down this week but wilson, martial or vardy do, its a clear con!
he's also has double the absolute transfers out as ings, whose had a price dropped.
I work as a statistician and this clearly looks like a fiddle, can anyone convince me otherwise?

I know that about WC transfers not having impact. Based on all things being equal, which is all that we can go on, were a higher majority of Ings/son transfers out on non-WC? the numbers for Werner seem much higher if all considered equal. If all WC then understandable, but so many? that's all i'm questioning. Btw, have you come across a datasource (on website/app) that holds that kind of info on WC and non-WC transfers? on a week by week, or better day by day.

Any reason Mahrez didn’t feature today?

Do we think he is first choice when fully fit?

Wanted to have him and Jesus instead of KDB due to team structure.

Is Foden a better punt that mahrez?

Started like 1 of the last 5, so it seems like Foden is preferred.

          Yes, 2M cheaper.

True, Werner is a cheaper option and may be an all-round better player. Yet to score this season though.
Kane has scored lots of goals in the past and on penalties, lower ownership also.

Rushed my transfers which I am not happy about.
Fingers crossed they don't burn me now.

Foden (over Podence) + Sterling (over KDB) were my other options.
Hoping to begin sorting defensive issues next week.

        McCarthy.
        Shaw, TAA, Ayling.
        KDB, Salah (vc), Son, Podence.
        Werner (c), DCL, Adams.
        Button, Mitchell, Justin, Bissouma.

not sure its that clear cut, Chelsea will settle and Foden could be great value long term....even short term I see Chelsea putting a few past WBA and Werner is one of Europe's top strikers (he'll def well outscore DCL)

I am not impressed w Chelsea at all, their goals will be spread out. Pretty much a team that has lots of homework to do. Just look at Havartz, totally clueless on the field. Contribute nothing. Chelsea should play Giroud.

At this moment in time, A.
If on a wildcard, you could just bring both of them in for double price rise - and then sell for profit.

Foden is a good player but not totally convinced just yet, although he could get 30-60 mins per game and still score decently like Mahrez.

People making up all these conspiracy theories about prices... have people not thought of the fact that a tonne of people are using wildcards right now and that prices don’t change on WC, particularly considering Werner was owned by so many WCers in GW1 and even this week

yeah it boils down to that, most (myself included) just push the WC button rather than making loads of transfers and pushing it later...nobody wants to be that guy who forgets and ends up with a -48 lol

werner 55% ownership, now 35%, 777k transfers out. no price drop?
ings, 420k transfers out, a price drop
antonio, 239k transfers out, a price drop
there are others, that have drops, who've played and did nothing with lower ownership.
maybe WC is part of that, but all things being equal without knowing, to the outsider it looks fixed
I'm just looking at numbers, its based on an inconsistent algorithm or it's fixed?

let's just do an observation this week, against martial, wilson or vardy who are highly transfered out.
they are being transfered out in much lower numbers than werner.
If their prices drop whilst werners stay fixed, would you think it a bit suspect?

kdb took an entire week to rise... Werner will drop this week definitely but the skews in price drops right now are coming from the so many active WCs.

there are multiple things that make a rise/drop I think

first consider ownership, then number of players total, then thresholds (e.g. 10%/20%30% etc.)

Transfers in and transfers out uses different metrics as well as far ass I've read on fantasyfix.com

So if 700k sold him, yet 100k bought him same week, those 100k might mitigate a lot of the price drop

In Ings case, maybe no one is bringing him in, but 400k sold

Just a suggestion, but I think fantasyfootballfix.com had a piece on it

For that to happen, for the price drop of son and ings, the transfers out are mostly non-WC?
Whilst werners transfers out are mostly on WC?
Ok, I'm just questioning whether it's an algorithm, if so then fine, But it doesn't look like it's acting that way.
For those sites you recommended, can you find number of transfers on WC versus, non-WC? and for week by week, or even day by day.
I work as a statistical modeler, I should be able to give it a go to backwards calculate it for werner vs ings/antonio/son.
