Son and Kane top the FPL points table as United’s defence crumbles again

Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goals: Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) | Tanguy Ndombele (£5.9m), Son Heung-min (£9.0m) x2, Harry Kane (£10.5m) x2, Serge Aurier (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Anthony Martial (£8.9m) | Kane, Aurier, Son, Ben Davies (£4.9m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m)
  • Bonus: Son x3, Kane x2, Aurier x1

A ruthless Spurs thrashed a Manchester United outfit that started fast, were then reduced to ten men and ended up a shambles.

Thirty seconds into the game and it looked like it might be the visitors who would be the whipping boys as Anthony Martial (£8.9m) burst into Tottenham’s area and Davinson Sanchez (£5.4m) gave away a penalty.

The spot-kick was, as usual, put away by United’s most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset, the 20.7%-owned Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m), and visiting coach Jose Mourinho could have been excused for preparing a scowl similar to the one he wore during much of his tenure at Manchester.

The fact he left the pitch at full-time with the sort of smugly magnanimous smile that only a massive victory can produce was down to his side’s excellence, a misguided moment from Martial and a complete capitulation from the rest of the United team.

But amidst all the sound and fury of a truly bewildering game, the key Fantasy takeaway was the surprise presence of, and a brilliant performance from, Son Heung-min (£9.0m).

While Mourinho had suggested the midfielder might be fit to play at Old Trafford, a hamstring issue had his official chances down as 25%. That prompted a massive FPL sale, with a net 1,308,054 managers – well over half his total ownership – getting rid of the South Korean.

He responded by starting, scoring twice, assisting once, earning maximum bonus and recording 18 points for his second double-digit haul (the other brought in 24) of a remarkable start to the season.

Twitter users were in meltdown at half-time, with the hashtag ‘Took Son’ – as in ‘I took Son out of my Fantasy team this week’ – trending worldwide.

By the final whistle, that had been replaced by #OleOut as Gunnar Solskjaer’s men fell apart.

The rot didn’t even start with Martial’s dismissal, after 28 minutes, for an irritable slap to Erik Lamela‘s (£5.9m) face sparked by the Argentine’s weasly attempt to elbow the United striker.

VAR upheld referee Anthony Taylor’s decision despite also showcasing Lamela’s embarrassing theatricality and his massive culpability in the whole event. But Martial walked, Lamela received only a booking and the match hurried away from the hosts.

In truth, it was already heading in that direction.

United’s lead lasted all of two minutes, with the fragility of centre-back pairing Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Eric Bailly (£5.0m) – the latter preferred to Victor Lindelof (£4.9m) – exposed for the first of many times.

Maguire’s feeble attempt to head the ball clear created a panic in the area and the ball eventually fell for Tanguy Ndombele (£5.9m) to equalise.

Three minutes later, Son put Spurs ahead when the new-look assist machine Harry Kane (£10.6m) was fouled, picked himself up and played a quick ball through to the midfielder, who dinked the ball over the advancing David De Gea (£5.5m) and in.

United responded, the lively Mason Greenwood (£7.4m) chalking up three attempts by the 23rd minute, but Son had already blown a great chance to double his tally before the Martial dismissal and it was one-way traffic from then on.

A minute after Martial finally trudged off, Spurs made it 3-1 when Bailly made a mess of trying to play out from the back, Kane pounced and played the ball to Son, who weighed up his options before squaring back to the striker for a simple finish.

Losing a striker should have at least meant United retained some semblance of shape at the back, but instead, enormous pockets of space kept opening up on their right flank and when Serge Aurier (£5.2m) was given the freedom to exploit this, he responded by setting up Son’s second goal.

It could even have been five by half-time, Kane missing a good chance from a near-post header, and that scoreline would not have flattered the visitors.

Solskjaer made changes at the break, shoring up his midfield by swapping out the blameless Fernandes and the pedestrian Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) for Fred (£5.4m) and Scott McTominay (£4.9m), but the fact Spurs only scored twice in the second half was as much to do with their own more relaxed approach than anything the United coach, or his players, did.

It was 5-1 on 51 when the rampaging Aurier smashed home from a brilliant Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m) first-time pass and Kane finished the scoring with an unstoppable penalty after substitute Ben Davies (£4.9m) was taken down by a sliding Paul Pogba (£7.9m).

Solskjaer was suitably crestfallen at the end of the match, saying:

Today, it was almost like Christmas, too many mistakes all came at once. Too many mistakes against a good team and you’ll be punished. It’s very embarrassing.

What might make things worse for him is the crash in confidence of Maguire, the unreliability of Lindelof and the rustiness of Bailly. United seem close to bringing in a new striker (Edinson Cavani) and a left-back (Alex Telles), but the unaddressed weaknesses in the centre of their defence do not bode well at all, as 11 goals conceded in three matches makes abundantly clear.

In Fantasy terms, however, the plentiful owners of Fernandes can still look forward to a good schedule through to mid-December, while Martial’s three-match ban could mean out-of-position opportunities up front for midfielders Greenwood or, more likely, Marcus Rashford (£9.5m).

As for Spurs, Son is currently the most-bought Gameweek 5 player – it would be interesting to know how many of those purchasers sold him ahead of the United match – and Kane is also in the top five.

The pair have 89 points between them this season. United’s entire squad has 72, albeit from one game less, and owning Son and/or Kane looks highly advisable when their next four opponents are West Ham and Brighton at home and Burnley and West Brom away.

So reasons to be cheerful are many for Spurs fans and Fantasy owners alike, while Mourinho was similarly upbeat:

The squad is very good, that’s why we won these matches, rotating players, bringing in fresh legs… and then Lo Celso injured, Bergwijn injured, Bale working… look at the squad we have, look at the attacking players we have, plus Vinicius in the stand. It was an amazing performance. I’m very proud of everyone at the club.

That could all be construed as a bit of a dig at a United board he believed failed to back him in the transfer market.

One thing’s for sure – Mourinho’s successor at Old Trafford is the manager with all the worries at present.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw; Matic (McTominay 45), Pogba; Fernandes (Fred 45), Rashford, Greenwood (van de Beek 67); Martial.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-2-1): Lloris; Aurier, Dier, Sanchez, Reguilon; Hojbjerg, Sissoko, Ndombele (Alli 69); Lamela (Moura 45), Son (Davies 73); Kane.

Not doubting Son's talent but hear me out...

Both of his returns have come from, first a ridiculously stupid high line Soton defence that let Son in on the counter over and over again, failing to learn their lesson after 4 almost identical Son goals. Then, against a heartless Man United side, with defensive error after defensive error... not to mention with 10 men.

Taking hits and removing the likes of KDB to bring in Son who is almost labelled 'essential' now is madness if you ask me, given all this.

Bringing him in for KdB is definitely knee jerky.
But if someone is taking a hit to remove the likes Werner/Rashford/Martial/Vardy
I'd definitely say it's worth it.

Son was great in the one half he played against Newcastle. Could have easily scored 2 on another day.

In the first game against everton, he was the only one looking like getting a return despite a bad spurs performance.
No stats would show it but he played a brilliant ball to Kane who just missed in touching it from 2 yards.
Also, had another opportunity to play in Kane where he played in Alli.

Have personally thought of Soucek + Werner to Son + Watkins for a hit but can’t get behind it with Werner’s next fixture. I’d like to have Son in as a bit of a shield but don’t think the hit is worth it

Has any player ever had a haul against a team playing stellar defense? I agree with the premise of not knee jerking into and out of Son based on a limited sample size (likewise with KDB, who is literally the best midfielder on the planet despite 2 blanks in a row); however I disagree with the idea that the defenses faced so far this season somehow delegitimize Son's value. His historic points per match, underlying stats, as well as captaincy potential against weaker defenses make him a steal at £9M IMO.

I completely agree with this. He might not match those 2 hauls again, but in combination with Kane, he looks like a great asset going forward.
Liverpool and City will click sooner rather than later, and Chelsea will likely come good in time. The player I'm looking to shift out for Son is Bruno as United's issues look chronic and may need a new-manager-bounce.
My dilemma is when to make the switch.
        1. If I do it now I don't lose TV, but I risk missing a crisis with another player returning from internationals injured or quarantined.
        2. GW5 has Bruno v Newcastle and Son v West Ham - it still looks like Bruno has the easier fixture.
        3. I'm also looking at selling Zaha (who might fade now he didn't get his transfer) for Grealish. I only have 1FT.

Personally I would use my valuable transfer on bigger issues than Bruno to Son. Statistically you're better off using transfers to get rid of low performing players and/or those with a terrible run of fixtures coming up (Bruno checks neither of these boxes) than chasing hunches at the top. Bruno is still a pretty fabulous option, being nailed, on pens, and basically the focal point of all offense generated on one of the best sides in EPL -- despite all the recent clamor over Ole all of the sudden being the worst manager in history after a couple of shaky performances. Take that for what it's worth, and good luck with your decision either way.

Fair point, but the extra 1.5m will come in very handy. I think an on-form Son will match the points tally of Bruno in an off-form United; the money will enable me to upgrade my front line and defence, or convert my 5th mid to a Chelsea mid (Puli or Havertz) when they get going (I already have 1.6m itb).

People are stupid- even Burney is trying to make Pope play as a Sweeper and dribble in the Box

I would kick the ball 70 yards down the field and eliminate the risk.

But coaches love this, even Adriano did the same stuff.

That's why Carlo has these kids in first place.

If a goalie had dribbling talent, he would not be a goalie.

Pickford had a brain fart the other day, but that's alright.

I think you can make up all of the reasons not to buy a player, especially if you’ve not had him since the start or you’ve sold him when you should have kept (the self-destruct button know as “pride” or “stubborness).

No matter which way you cut it, Son ticks all of the important boxes. And seeing as though there are not many stand-out captaincy soptions in GW5 or GW8, he ticks those boxes as well. So when the stars align like this. I would take a hit to bring him in without thinking about it too much.

Morning. Undecided between 2 different routes-

    A. Gradual and spread out. Use cash for Taylor to Chilwell and Vassilev to Antonio over the next few weeks. Leaves 0.8 as of now

    B. Instant. Podence to Son. Will wait and ignore rise, currently would leave 0.3

    McCarthy
    TAA Dier(urgh) Taylor Saiss
    James Salah KDB Podence
    Ings DCL

Steer Mitchell Bissouma Vassilev 0FT 3.8M ITB

I normally play the A route but now????

I just feel 'happier' with a Ings, Jiminez, Werner price player up top with no real logic
Seeing a 6.0/ 6.5/ 7.5 front line looks un nerving when it could be the way to go.

This is my big decision. You probably know I watch Everton closely and I cannot help but think James has been fortunate. Yes he scored goals back post last game but other teams will get tighter. His normal position is slightly deep for an FPL asset. If you want a good watch though he is your man

Fortunate goals still require you to have a great positioning skill. I think Hames is really a talented guy and i think Everton really benefited from him. I have DCL and haven't bought him cause i"m still stubborn holding on to Havertz.

If you're not an Everton fan and you have to pick, do you think Grealish is a better pick than Hames FPL-wise ?

As I said I am looking at James. I want Pulisic when fit and he would be more of a placeholder. Jack is a little inconsistent for me due to his positioning. A wait and see on both I think. Try to wipe out Pool performance in your mind. Not saying Villa have not improved though. The keeper is the only one for me atm.

Throughout most of his career, Rodriguez has averaged almost one goal/assist per game. For 7.5m, in a team that will score a lot of goals, I’d say that’s exceptional value.

Agreed, he's got a very consistent track record of putting up these numbers and it should only continue, him being the world class player he is. His chance creation numbers show he isn't an "assister of the assist" player either.

Happens to all of us, I picked Son over Martial and removed Vardy on WC3 which wouldn't have happened if I'd been in a better position. Dropped 50-70~ points on that one, disappointing.

Wolves is confused right now. They should do what they did best which is counter attacking, focus on defense, and rely on cross from wingbacks, but now they're trying to attack with front three, i don't think Podence and Neto is up to this and that's bad for Jimi

I'm still giving him 1-2 more chance but shifting him off to Antonio and Maupay could give fund to better mid or def

Problem is they lost their wingbacks, and Semedo and Marcal are clearly FBs, not WBs. Nuno will have to persist with the new tactic and players will take time to get the hang of it.

I wouldn't get Walcott myself; I just meant I'd prioritise him over RLC. I'm currently trying to decide whether to stick with Zaha or switch to Grealish.

yup agree about Walcott over RLC

i'm trading Foden for Grealish although many advised not to do so but based on 3 games, Grealish has 3 shots / game and Foden only 1.7 with a chance of him benched.

Jack could be their main set piece taker (and could be on pen ?) so the chance of free kick goal and assist to Watkins is there

Also, last season he single-handedly carry the team and give return against 13 different opponents. Set aside the last Liverpool result, I think Grealish is a great pick

Some still said he'll get another chance

Maybe Frank is playing Azpi to give more time for Thiago to adapt as maybe he's preparing Thiago to be the team captain and Azpi as a backup to James (considering James a young and energetic player, better suited to their fast-paced attack)

But it remains to be seen and if James is benched again in the next game, then have to get rid for Chilwell maybe

I'm in a position where I cannot get Son right away so a little bit biased but I think Kane is better pick right now for 3 reasons :

              1. He's the playmaker, he can get goals and assist, also he's on pen
              2. With Bale coming to play (maybe) in GW5, there's always a chance attack can be switch to the right (depends on situation) while any attack will have Kane on central so he can gain a lot from this
              3. I'm not 100% sure that Son's hamstring is only Mou's prank. If he got a little bit problem with that and he's on steroid and painkiller yesterday, there's always a chance he'll get rested later on (he pulled off early in the 75+ minutes mark) judging by the hectic Spurs schedule

              Hope it helps

I've jumped the gun and got both in for a hit.
Son has 2 weeks to recover now so he really ought to be fine.
I now have to sweat on 3 England games hoping Kane doesn't get nobbled.
I'd expect Bale to start a Carabao Cup or EL game or two before he's unleashed in a PL game - and even then likely from the bench. But in time, yes, he will attract more balls to the right, but the crosses coming in with benefit Son as well as Kane, so I still have faith in the double-act.

then it's tough to fit all of them in

i guess if KDB doesn't perform at home against Arsenal (last season he gave return in both reverse fixtures), then maybe KDB off for Salah to give fund to Kane/Son could be better and maybe get KDB back in GW10 ?

Is Watking the best under 6.0 forward option?

Yes possibly the best under 6.5 also

He and Bamford yeah. Under 6.6 i would go Maupay because of pens

I'm considering Antonio also, but his fixture is not promising.

All 4 good options. My order of priority would be
          1. Watkins
          2. Maupay
          3. Antonio
          4. Bamford

      I'd do it.

Spurs next 4 are great. United's next 4 are pretty tough.

He's had two penalties in a row. No way he gets 3, right?!

judging by Son's blank of last 2 home games, i guess if you have Kane then it's suffice for now and wait for Son vs bur in GW6 ?

I'm in that dilemma now. I want to do Bruno>Son and Zaha>Grealish but only have 1FT. I'll try to hang on to see who returns from internationals hale and hearty and maybe do the former a week later.

It's a tough choice. West ham have looked pretty good recently too for Son's next game.

That's probably the only question mark. KDB would be my choice but go with your gut

KDB is more better option in that price bracket when compare to sterling and he has a good record against Arsenal. Might change to KDB for penalty and set pieces.

My draft is quite similar. But got Kane and Maupay up top and Zaha instead om Sterling.
I'm not convinced by those big price tags on city players until they get it togeather.
Sterling is better on the wing where he can run in and tap in. Aguero/Jesus badly needed to get the team going 100% again.
You will prob captain Salah 90% of the time also.

Kdb and Salah is a must for me , i think city will come back stronger against Arsenal.

Great First XI but very worrying bench.
Steer will be 3rd choice keeper when Heaton is back
Mitchell will lose his place when PVA is back
          Douglas won't get a look-in
Brewster will prob be rotated at Blades.
