Son and Kane ruthless as Mourinho works ‘second season’ magic on defence

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Arsenal

  • Goals: Son Heung-min (£9.5m), Harry Kane (£10.9m)
  • Assists: Kane, Son
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Son x2, Serge Aurier (£5.2m) x1

Son Heung-min (£9.5m) became the first player this season to reach a century of Fantasy Premier League points as his productive double-act with Harry Kane (£10.9m) reaped more returns on Sunday.

Son curled in a superb effort from distance to hand Tottenham Hotspur an early lead in the north London derby, with Kane claiming the assist for the South Korean’s 10th goal of the campaign.

The winger then returned the favour on the stroke of half-time, teeing up his psychic sidekick to lash home off the underside of Bernd Leno‘s (£5.0m) crossbar.

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND IMAGE

In front of a 2,000-strong crowd of their own fans, Spurs ended up with just 31.3% of the possession against their noiseless neighbours.

No Premier League side carved out fewer big chances (zero) or had fewer shots in the box (two) than Mourinho’s troops in Gameweek 11, while Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney (£5.4m) had more touches in the final third in this fixture than the entire Spurs squad.

All of this was by design, of course.

A naive Mikel Arteta and Arsenal played straight into Mourinho’s hands, with the Lilywhites more than happy to allow the Gunners a lot of fruitless possession and then ruthlessly hit them on the break.

While this weekend’s game against Crystal Palace will allow for a more front-foot approach, the subsequent triple-header against Liverpool, Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers will no doubt tempt Mourinho into adopting similar tactics to what we have witnessed since the November international break.

Non-owners of Kane and Son will be hoping for more of the same in terms of chance creation and clinging to the hope that the in-form Spurs pair can’t possibly sustain their current output – they are averaging more points per match than even Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) did in his record-breaking 2017/18 – from the scraps they are served up.

But their owners will perhaps consider that Spurs’ toughest tests are almost over, with even Leicester and Wolves’ defences in iffy shape over the last month.

Whatever the decision of the ‘keep, sell or buy’ dilemma, there’ll be few of us who will want to go into the fixture swing in Gameweek 16 without one of Kane or Son in our squads at the very least.

SECOND SEASON SHUT-OUT SYNDROME

For all of Arsenal’s possession on Sunday, there were few clear-cut opportunities. Indeed, two headed half-chances from Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) were the only efforts that Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) had to repel.

Lloris has only had to make more than three saves in a game on two occasions this season, which is a testament to how well organised the Spurs backline has been.

No side has conceded fewer goals (nine) or kept more clean sheets (five) than the Lilywhites in 2020/21.

Mourinho has previous for excelling in his second season in a new job, with his former sides’ defensive records particularly impressing:

TeamClean sheets (rank v other clubs in division)Goals conceded (rank v other clubs in division)
Spurs (2020/21)5 (=1st)9 (1st)
Manchester United (2017/18)19 (1st)28 (2nd)
Chelsea (2014/15)17 (1st)32 (1st)
Real Madrid (2011/12)14 (3rd=)32 (2nd)
Inter Milan (2009/10)17 (1st)34 (1st)
Chelsea (2005/06)20 (2nd)22 (1st)

Toby Alderweireld (£5.4m) was imperious on his return from injury on Sunday, while midfield shield Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m) is increasingly looking like one of the signings of the summer and Serge Aurier (£5.2m) has been utterly, bewilderingly transformed into a more-than-competent right-back.

Mourinho discussed his side’s improvement at the back in his post-match interview:

I used to call it first of all tactical culture, which is work. One of the things we don’t have much of is time to work because of so many matches, but when we have time to work or to analyse we need to be very, very clinical and go direct to the points.

Try to help the players also individually and improve and after that, it’s the concept of team, because it’s not just about the defenders. It’s Harry Kane winning ball in the box, it’s Steven Bergwijn doing incredible effort on the sides, it’s Lucas coming for five minutes and five minutes he helps the team so much, it’s Joe Rodon coming on for one minute and in that minute he had a great defensive header for a long ball. It’s all these bits that go together, so step by step we are building.

As well as Kane and Son, perhaps we Fantasy managers should also be making a beeline for Sergio Reguilon (£5.7m) and co at Gameweek 16 at the latest.

ARSE ABOUT FOOT

Arsenal sit top of our Season Ticker over the next eight Gameweeks, with matches against the likes of Burnley, Brighton, Newcastle, West Brom and Crystal Palace to come in that time.

In normal circumstances, we’d be eyeing up a Gunner or two for our squads ahead of this favourable run.

But Arteta’s troops sit 15th in the Premier League table, without a goal from open play since Gameweek 4.

Fantasy management is all about timing, of course, and anticipating when a purple patch of form is about to start. Manchester City, for example, had given us little incentive to invest ahead of their clash with Burnley in Gameweek 10.

Even acknowledging that an upturn in results is likely over Christmas given the standard of opposition, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) – back on the left flank in this game – couldn’t be further from our thoughts with other premium FPL assets in such superb form.

A lack of creativity, goal threat or reliability of starts from Arsenal’s other midfielders and forwards leaves us looking at their backline, which had been showing promising signs up until Gameweek 8.

No FPL defender has more bonus points than Hector Bellerin (£5.4m) this season, while Gabriel (£5.1m) has posed a goal threat from set plays.

But the loss of Thomas Partey (£5.0m) to the recurrence of a thigh problem could be a hammer blow, given how promisingly he had started his Arsenal career and how ineffectual their midfield was without him.

Speaking of Partey’s fitness issue and the incident which led to Spurs’ goal, Arteta said:

It is an injury and it is in the same area, unfortunately. We don’t know how bad it is. I was trying to push him but I don’t think he realised the gravity of the situation when he left his position but probably because he was in a lot of pain.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Aurier, Aldeweireld, Dier, Reguilon; Sissoko, Hojbjerg; Bergwijn (Rodon 90), Lo Celso (Davies 72), Son (Moura 88); Kane.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Bellerin (Nketiah 72), Holding, Gabriel, Tierney; Partey (Ceballos 45′), Xhaka; Willian, Lacazette, Saka; Aubameyang

Do you mean the Watchlist with 'VsX'. It went like that before games against City, Chelsea and Arsenal. Clearly the guy's as fixture-proof as it gets!

A Saints cs vs blades is pretty likely isn’t it?
I’m so tempted to get taa in for Lamptey but I could just play KWP instead and forget about taa.
Or is getting taa the clear winner?

Lamptey's done naff all for me, but he's got Ful + Sheff U coming up in GWs13-14. He can bench out next GW.

Bit bored of him if I’m honest, never gets the points he deserves. I decided if I ship one out of KWP and Lamptey then it’s little Lamptey.
More interested in having a fixed back 3 now, so already got James and Chilwell, then TAA would come in with KWP being my bench cover.
Then if TAA doesn’t work out or I need money, shift him to Reguilon in gw16 possibly, or just start playing KWP.

The KWP / Lamptey rotation hasn’t been bad per se, but another premium defender seems like it would probably pay off more so.

Also worth mentioning that Lamptey seems to be liable to picking up cards, KWP is fairly safe hands in comparison

Lamptey averaging 2.9 points per game, 2 yellows and 1 red, 2 bonus points in 10 appearances.
KWP averaging 3.6 points per game, 3 yellows, 4 bonus points in 11 appearances.

KWP actually has more yellows then I realised, but frankly his defending is far better which can lead to baps, and he seems to be popping up with the odd shot or assist now and again.
Also I feel like you can trust Saints at home to some extent, where as I don’t trust Brighton home nor away to get a cs.

Lamptey is nice to watch and very attacking, but it often means he is caught out of position and has to perform last ditch tackles/fouls which seem likely to pick up cards. Also his attacking runs mean he is highly prone to injury as he gets fouled a lot, and he is also young and small.

Lamptey will be a great option one day, but he isn’t the finished article. Not convinced he will ever be a great pick while at Brighton.

I'm in your ballpark. I've got Zouma and Dias as my nailed-on defenders, with one of Konsa/KWP/Lamptey rotating in. I fancy upgrading one to Dier but I've got other fires to fight, so Lamps will go for Dier if the former blanks in those easy games.

Yea good idea, also considering Dier as my respective taa replacement.
Even slightly tempted by four at the back at some point, but now isn’t the time, don’t know if there will be a time tbh when you got cheapies like Bamford, Wilson, Jota etc floating around in good form.

Indeed. I have to bench one of my front 8 and pick the wrong one every time. No room to start a 4th defender!

Four “big hitters” usually means a very unbalanced team but I don’t think this looks too bad and I don’t have to worry about transferring players in and out for C each week.

One of the better all heavy hitter teams I've seen, just no Kane....if the budget forwards keep firing could work for a while. At least you have Coufal coming on. Some power mid squads have no subs at all. Unlike previous seasons you may need to downgrade somewhere for 2 decent subs in the near future.

Yeah Coufal is going to have decent fixtures in 2-3 weeks.
Even with Coufal the bench is still pretty weak and risky for the weeks ahead.

Ur bench should cover standard things, for example even if Jota is benched he still likely gets minutes. You don’t really have any players likely to miss an entire 90, Walker was an exception to that this week though.
But yea with the busy period and COVID who knows what that will hold in store for us.
I feel like probably having 2 starters on the bench is enough, Keeper I wouldn’t worry about. So assuming Brewster is going to be playing it’s probably fine in reality.

Should I really be bothered too much about having Riedewald as my 5th mid for now?
Bissouma and Romeu are YC magnets so high chance of 1 point anyway and are 1 YC away from suspensions, Brewster is not nailed and mostly getting 1 point anyway.

Riedewald is 0.1 cheaper and will at least get 1 point if needed anytime

The only fodder who I would actually rather have is Anguissa

Then I would take Anguissa - he'll start every game for 2 points as opp to Reidewald's 1 point. And he's a better player.

I think many of us judge the price of players and not the value. When transferrinig out an expensive player many will look at an alternative in a similar price range rather than a comparable cheaper option 'his form will never continue this good'. If Aguero, Kane or Vardy had scored 11 goals very few would sell him. But Calvert Lewin, decent last season, lovely price is a popular sale it seems. He's great for this price and even if Everton aren't great he did well with a lesser Everton team last season. Just saying like 😉

Not always - people have got in the likes of Jota, Bamford and Grealish based on value and quality, not price.

Prices do mess with people’s heads, same with choosing captains, people hesitate or avoid captaining cheaper players like DCL when they can and still haul.
I don’t pay attention to price in regards to those things

Plus the people who chose those prices are fairly clueless which is evident in the pricing of players like firmino or the defender classification of Lunds last season.

I do love value players though, so for instance I see Grealish as a 9.5mil player, he is very close to an essential season keeper for me. DCL I have the same feelings about, but I don’t trust DCL as much, I always have the niggly feeling that DCLs form will drop off completely. But it hasn’t yet, so I guess I hold until then.

Been weighing up my options and I've come to the conclusion that selling on Sterling for Son is the best thing I can do. City have some nice games ahead but I don't intend on using Sterling as a captain pick again for a long time. Son is also more likely to be ran into the ground during the hectic schedule I think and Spurs seem to have turned a corner. Puts cash in the bank to make further improvements too. Just feels weird selling a City attacker before a good run and also not planning to bring one in either. Captain picks are wrapped up anyway.

Fernandes gwk 13 vs SHU and Salah gwk 15 vs WBA. After gwk 15 Spurs attack becomes a frequent captain option to go along with Salah and Fernandes. Just not sure Sterling is worth the extra cash.

All very sound arguments. I think Sterling passed the eye test in the last game and when he’s on form, he’s a great captaincy option. Son’s 10 goals from an xG of 3.5 is surely not sustainable regardless of how good a finisher he is. Can’t really argue with the pick, though, good

Still early but will I play:
        (1) Dallas
        (2) James (with Chillwell)

No confident about CS for Chelsea while more so about Leeds.

No point owning 2 premium Chelsea defenders if you are not prepared to play them every week ... they have had clean sheets against Utd & Spurs so far this season so can keep out such teams plus both can get attacking returns

Also, Meslier or McCarthy for my Guaita replacement?

Good chance. Looks quite sharp considering the lay off. Will be a decent option.

          McCarthy for me.

Mesliers hauls come away from home so I'm hesitant. He might get a few 6s but Leeds dominate position at home so no save points

Fair point, but they’ve also played City, Leicester, Wolves and Arsenal at home so far (granted they did concede 3 to Fulham in GW2) - not the easiest of opposition.

Their next 5 at home are WHU NEW BUR SOU BHA. I would expect 3 cleansheets amongst that lot.

nothing i do seems to be "correct"

but have done bruno and ziyech to JWP and Salah for -4

i can actually sell vardy and ziyech instead of bruno and ziyech but i just couldnt force myself to sell vardy against brighton,

maybe just look at how to get back bruno soon?no choice..
