Salah benched as Matip returns for Liverpool’s Palace visit

Jurgen Klopp has benched Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) for Liverpool’s Gameweek 14 trip to Crystal Palace.

The news comes after mutterings about the Egyptian’s starting berth emerged on social media on Friday night – and it finally appears there was truth to them.

Takumi Minamino (£6.0m) is the man chosen to replace Salah in the line-up, joining Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) and Sadio Mané (£11.9m) in the front-three.

A return to full fitness for Joel Matip (£5.4m) sees him reclaim his centre-back role alongside Fabinho (£5.4m) at the heart of defence, so Rhys Williams (£4.0m) drops out to sit among Salah and the other substitutes.

Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) start at left and right-back together for the third successive Premier League match since the latter’s injury comeback.

Crystal Palace make three changes from the side that drew 1-1 at West Ham midweek. Following their rest, Gary Cahill (£4.5m) and Nathaniel Clyne (£4.5m) return to the defence in the place of Scott Dann (£4.4m) and Joel Ward (£4.3m).

Roy Hodgson’s other alteration is enforced, Jordan Ayew (£5.7m) coming in for the suspended Christian Benteke (£5.5m).

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Van Aanholt, Cahill, Kouyate, Clyne; Eze, McArthur, Milivojevic, Schlupp; Zaha, Ayew.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Fabinho, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Keita, Wijnaldum, Henderson; Mane, Firmino, Minamino.

        Well I am quite sure you knew rumours of possible benching? I think it was you who posted here that Salah wont be benched bcs he has 9d rest after the game. Sorry if it was someone else. That post made me change my C back to Salah when realised 9d rest. Then changed C back to Bruno bcs it is not first time these rumours are true. And Bruno ok captain too.

      Plus side: Salah is now less likely to be benched against Wba, New, Sou and the DGW in which he is a prime C or TC option.

      He was always going to get rested at some point, it would be physically impossible for him not to be. Relatively speaking though, today is a good time for it to happen.

      In fact as long as you haven't captained him there's an argument that it's actively a plus for you. You weren't going to get much benefit from him today anyway given his EO, so having him as a secure captain pick for those coming games is probably more valuable.

        Only a plus for non-captainers if their Captain outscores Salah, which is still by no means a guarantee.

          Probably still a plus given it limits how much Salah can punish them for picking the wrong option. If my captain doesn't do well in his own right then a Salah haul definitely doesn't help.

          Depends on what was recommended at the time in terms of conditioning.

          It isn't as simple as a player either need games or rest. They need the right combination of both. As he was coming back from his covid lay-off Salah may have more immediately needed gametime, even if that increased the need for rest in the medium term, because that would get him to peak fitness sooner.

        BT match commentary can be a bit drab at times (I hate when Hoddle is on a match, and that's almost every time when it's a Chelsea one!).

        Ally McCoist was a nice switch on Amazon last GW. Was actually enthusiastic about what he was watching at the very least!

        EO can be different depending on rank tiers, top 10k EO may have Salah higher than top say, 500k EO

        As the season goes on the top 10k is usually still quite representative of active teams. The issue is the overall stats are skewed by dead teams (probably half of the 7m players).

          You can check stats for different rank tiers and I think it will give you EO for your own rank too
