Budget Fantasy defender Burn an injury concern for Blank Gameweek 29

SOUTHAMPTON 1-2 BRIGHTON

  • Goals: Che Adams (£5.8m) | Lewis Dunk (£4.9m), Leandro Trossard (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) | Pascal Gross (£5.8m), Danny Welbeck (£5.5m)
  • Bonus: Trossard x3, Adams x2, Dunk x1

DEEP BURN AS DAN DOWN

Budget Brighton defender Dan Burn (£4.2m) did not reappear for the second half in Sunday’s win over Southampton due to a hamstring injury.

On Burn, manager Graham Potter explained:

We lost Dan at half time with a tight hamstring. So we had to adapt and I thought we did it really well.

A little bit too early to say [on the severity]. It was more tightness and we’re hoping more precautionary, so we’ll see how it settles down over the next day or so.

Those who drafted in the colossal defender for Blank Gameweek 29 will find out next week if they’ve been burned, while Free Hitters probably have one less budget option to consider.

SLAM DUNK THE FUNK

Lewis Dunk (£4.9m) will be under heavy consideration for those using the ‘Free Hit’ chip, however.

The Brighton skipper rose into space to jam a header home from a Pascal Gross (£5.8m) corner after 16 minutes.

Dunk’s aerial prowess should see him feature in many a Free Hit team, though the situation is not as clear for other FPL managers.

The Seagulls play away to Manchester United and Chelsea between Gameweeks 30 and 32, with those fixtures sandwiching a visit from Everton.

Next week’s match-up does bode well, however.

Only Crystal Palace (19) – who have played an extra fixture – conceded more headed attempts than Brighton’s Blank Gameweek 29 opponents Newcastle (17) between Gameweeks 24 and 27.

THREE-CHE

Che Adams (£5.8m) made it three goals in as many games, volleying past Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) from a Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) knockdown.

Southampton have clashes with Burnley (H), West Brom (a) and Crystal Palace (H) before a blank in Gameweek 33.

Their outstanding match from that round of fixtures, away to Spurs, could also give the Saints a Double Gameweek before Blank Gameweek 33; though nothing is confirmed in that case.

So despite another lacklustre performance in Gameweek 28, Southampton assets could be on the menu after the international break.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl delivered a fairly scathing verdict on his team after full-time that will not promote confidence in the Saints for the time being.

“They are fighting for relegation and we think we are safe – but I think we should pay attention because when we play like this we will not win a lot of games, that is for sure.

“We had a not so good start. We came back a bit better, with a few chances but in the second half, the opponent wanted it more and we have to be self critical about it because it was by far one of the worst games we have played this season.

“It is time to work on a few basic fundamentals in the next weeks. The second goal gave them a lift. After we did not have a solution, only one chance at the end. But in total it was not enough to deserve a point today. We see that our game is far away from what it has been this season.

“The way we tried to play was far away from what I wanted. You could see, it was chaotic. There was no plan and no clear idea during the final 30 minutes.

“We have to work on this. We have shown in the past that when we have time to work on things, we can come back to the highest level.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

POTTER WORKS HIS MAGIC

Burn’s withdrawal saw Graham Potter make an unorthodox substitution, with forward Andi Zeqiri (£5.0m) brought on to play at left wing-back.

That shifted Pascal Gross (£5.8m) to right wing-back, allowing Leandro Trossard (£5.7m) to play behind the striking duo of Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) and Neal Maupay (£6.1m).

In the 57th minute, link-up play between Adam Lallana (£6.2m) and Welbeck allowed the latter to slip Trossard in behind the Southampton defence.

The Belgian made no mistake as he slotted past Forster to put Brighton in the lead for a second time, an advantage which they would not relinquish.

“He’s an important player. He’s experienced, has great quality on the ball and we need him as a team. He’s added that extra bit for us and we are really happy to have him.” – Leandro Trossard on Adam Lallana

“I thought it was a deserved victory. Full credit to the players, they had to adapt. Second half we got a really good goal and when we had to defend we defended against a really good side that plays with huge intensity.” – Graham Potter

On Lallana, Potter added:

I thought he was fantastic today. He takes the ball in tight areas, links the play up really well and uses his voice to organise the team. He’s a really important player and person for us. Really delighted for him – that’s his second 90 minutes, so we need to recover him and get him ready for the weekend.

Southampton XI (4-2-2-2): Forster; Bertrand, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Ward-Prowse, Diallo; Minamino (Redmond 65′), Armstrong (N’Lundulu 87′); Tella (Djenepo 68′), Adams.

Brighton & Hove Albion (3-4-1-2): Sanchez; Dunk, Veltman, White; Burn (Zeqiri 46′), Bissouma, Lallana, Gross; Trossard (Moder 85′); Maupay, Welbeck (Propper 76′).

You're sacrificing far too much in defence and keepers to get 4 big premiums.

Sacrifice one of them and spread the funds.

I think it depends if you want the players going forward.
It's effectively a -2 to do foden to lingard, for example, so a great move if you want lingard for the next few weeks.
However, it's a poor move if you really want jota for foden, and need a subsequent-4 to make that happen.

I'm sure the FUL LEE will be a tough game but I don't agree with WHU and ARS being an open game. WHU always sets up being difficult against a top side with 5ATB and will only change if they are getting beat.

Dubious about Reg and Tierney - or at least both of them

Villa defence I've upgraded with Son out and both Spurs and Arsenal seem to find a way to concede every time. The double WH attack? Any better than double Spurs this week?

Prefer Areola over Sanchez and Dunk in. Sanchez will get no save points and Areola could get a few. Dunk the Brighton asset to be on.

Second guessing Arteta will be really tough.

See you have Cresswell in anyway so forget that comment

Just think 6 in the Arsenal WH game is too high risk for a likely 1-1 sort of result especially with rotation threat.

And that my friend is the big call his week. Positives are that Bale will be more likely to play and poss more advanced. Downside is that team overall will be weakened without Son. 5 days of mental gymnastics incoming. Prob not worth it for short term only but TOT have NEW, poss double and good set of fixtures coming up.

This game is so frustrating sometimes. I wish I was more of a 'roll with the punches' sort of guy! I was set up better than any of my ML rivals thanks to forward planning, could field 10 (or 11 with a -4), they will all have to take hits/use chips/field 6/7 players and now I'm in exactly the same boat after scoring 42 all out because of random injuries.

I'll see you all on Friday at 1800 GMT!!

    Kane fail
Targett Assist wiped out and CS fail in last 4 minutes of game
Struijk fail (I sold him because he was supposed to be injured and not going to feature in team anymore).
    Fernandes fail
set-up for BGW in tatters due to injuries (i had done planning over past xx weeks for 11 players with no hits)
And yet somehow i am roughly even so far in my rank on 44 pts with Salah to play.

I was going to wildcard in 31. I looked at doing it now due to the weekend's injuries to get a decent week 29 side out. I don't think it is worth it as I would need to replace 5 players by week 32 for a decent bench boost (the only decent BB week imo).

    Instead, I can take a -12 (effectively a -6 after appearance points):
Already got Dallas in last night for free, then:

    Robertson, Salah, Reid
    to
    DSanchez, Raphina, Kane(C)

I had no decent captaincy options for 29 otherwise.
    What do you think?

A -12 seems mental in a week with only 4 games no matter who you're bringing in.

I'm up about a million places in the past 10 gameweeks with WC, FH and TC left to play. I was intending to take a -4 this week to field 10/11 (depending on Bamford fitness), but questioning whether taking a hit will prove worth it with such limited fixtures, and many of the good options out injured.

My plans for Bale/Son, Aubameyang and a Brighton DEF seem dead in the water. Prioritise Fulham and West Ham? Seem to be a lot of points in defence at the moment - I've benched huge numbers in the past few weeks by prioritising big-hitting mids who get 3 points!

    Team is currently:

    Martinez
    Dallas / Targett
    Lookman / Raphinha
    Bamford* / Kane / Antonio

Non-playing: Pope, Cancelo, Stones, Shaw, Bruno, Gundogan, Salah

    Thanks for any advice.

Obviously the FH team is better. How much is the FH chip worth and do you get that gain in you FH draft team vs team A?

Rate my team tool reckons about 15 points, and I wouldn't have the hit, so very roughly 19 points. The only other time I could benefit more from the FH would be if there is a dgw later in the season I expect

GW33 is also a good week to play FH - Liverpool (NEW), Leicester (CRY), and Brighton (shu) have plum fixtures , while highly owned Spurs and City blank, allowing you to load up on differentials like Mane, Jota, TAA, Vardy, Barnes, Castagne, Trossard etc.

I'm sure that is the big question from a lot of teams. I can see Auba being used in the Europa and limited mins in GW29 whereas Bale will be rested in Europa and play 60 mins in 29

Quite a lot of the Leeds fans prefer Struijk and Llorente in the CB positions but if Cooper is back I doubt Struijk plays

Do we think Cresswell is worth a -4?

I've got 2 free transfers which have to be for Kane and Raphinha, just debating if anything is worth a hit. Team will be:

                Martinez
                Konsa Dallas
                Son Raph Lingard
                Kane Bamford Watkins

Can only see Cresswell or Bale being worth a hit here?

Long term, Cresswell is a good pick for a -4. Just look at his fixtures, guaranteed 90 mins and WHU have Europe to play for

True, but I still have my WC and can just bring him in for 31, it's whether it's worth it specifically for this week.

Is any hits for GW29 going to pay off in that week?! Surely try and think beyond 29 with your transfers

When you plan to wildcard in 2 weeks time do you not agree it's a bit pointless looking beyond those 2 weeks with your transfers?

This is purely about whether a hit will pay off in the short term, because I can completely reconfigure my team in 31 like a lot of people are planning to do. Anyway, I'm leaning towards not buying Cresswell for that reason, a points hit would probably be better aimed at an attacker.

ARS have scored in each of their last 5 games so you will prob need Cress assist just to stay even

Cheers, I'm leaning towards not taking a hit unless Son is confirmed out (which looks likely), probably better to hit for an attacker than a defender.

Poor week for the Scout Picks. Interested in GW29 picks and they usually bounce back strongly after a poor GW
