Man Utd v Liverpool postponed after protests in and around Old Trafford

Sunday’s Premier League match between Manchester United and Liverpool has been officially postponed following supporter protests inside and outside Old Trafford.

No new date has yet been announced by the Premier League but available windows are thin on the ground.

Thousands of Manchester United fans had been protesting against the club’s ownership ahead of kick-off, with supporters present around the stadium and separately holding up the departure of the team buses from the Lowry Hotel.

A small section of fans had also made it onto the pitch during the demonstration.

A statement from United said:

Following discussion between the Police, The Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today. Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture.

Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger. We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations.

The Premier League added in their own statement:

Following the security breach at Old Trafford, the Manchester United v Liverpool game has been postponed. This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities. The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance.

We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches. Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification.

We sympathise with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football.

The rearrangement of the fixture will be communicated in due course.

WHEN COULD THE REARRANGED MATCH TAKE PLACE?

Man Utd v Liverpool kick-off delayed as protesting fans invade Old Trafford pitch 2

Playing the rearranged game tomorrow night (still within Gameweek 34) is one scenario providing security concerns aren’t an ongoing issue and any relevant rearrangements can be made, with the Red Devils still getting a 72-hour window before their rematch with Roma.

Aside from that, the only free slot that Manchester United have is on the weekend of May 15/16 (Gameweek 36) – when Liverpool are in action against West Bromwich Albion.

West Brom v Liverpool could, theoretically, be moved back a few days into the midweek of Gameweek 35, creating a ‘double’ for both teams and allowing Manchester United v Liverpool to take place in Gameweek 36:

Thanks again to Legomane for the graphic.

TEAM NEWS

The teamsheets had actually been released as normal an hour before the scheduled kick-off time.

The headline news was that Diogo Jota (£7.1m) was only among the substitutes, with Jurgen Klopp reverting back to his tried-and-tested 4-3-3 set-up following a dalliance with a more attacking formation last weekend.

Jota was one of two players who dropped out of the starting XI, with Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.3m) also making way.

Nat Phillips (£4.1m) had been passed fit, while James Milner (£5.3m) was recalled in the middle of the park.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s line-up showed only one change from the side he sent out to face Leeds United last weekend.

Paul Pogba (£7.6m) returned, with Daniel James (£6.2m) dropping out.

SUNDAY’S OTHER GAMEWEEK 34 ACTION

A match that had very little impact on the upper echelons of Fantasy Premier League went the way of the visitors at St James’ Park.

Thanks to a combination of injuries, rotation and general disinterest in either side, not a single player on show had an effective ownership of greater than 0.27% in the top 10k.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) was back in the starting XI after a spell out with malaria and continued his fine individual record against a listless and potentially ‘on the beach’ Newcastle United, scoring one and fortuitously assisting another en route to a first double-digit haul since Gameweek 24.

A third of his 12 attacking returns this season have come against the Magpies.

Budget FPL midfielder Gabriel Martinelli (£4.9m) set up the Gabon international’s goal, with the even-cheaper Mohamed Elneny (£4.2m) scoring the opener following an Aubameyang miscue.

Bernd Leno (£5.0m), Bukayo Saka (£5.1m), Emile Smith Rowe (£4.2m) and Rob Holding (£4.3m) were all either unused substitutes or not involved as Arteta once again ran wild with the rotation with one eye on Europe.

Arsenal were again without Kieran Tierney (£5.2m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m), with Arteta offering a pessimistic update ahead of kick-off.

Souness telling it straight. If Man Utd were still winning and their party (and Arsenal's tbf) hadn't been disrupted by Abramovich, FSG, and Sheikh Mansour money, the fans would not be moaning.

Billions of dollars spent by successive managers at Man Utd. What has it gone on? They could have signed Salah, Kane, Bale, Kante, Mahrez, Van Dijk etc in the period since Ferguson left.

However, Neville also telling it straight re these 'Big 6' English clubs. The 'Big 6' don't need fans approval to do what they want. So if the fans actually want to take action, they need to get behind new laws being enacted in the UK.

Are the fans protesting about the goal being given to McAuley instead of Jonny Evans?

No - it's because they sold Evans and kept Phil Jones

Supposedly Watkins assist is the second driving force behind the protest. Banners of Mark Sutherns being burned in flames

If this match did get postponed, where does it realistically go?

The PL presumably won't want to interfere with the 'fans back in' fixture plans for 37/38, but with United already having a double in 35 and 36-38 being so compact, there aren't any obvious days left. Both teams are playing on 19th and 23rd May (37/38).

Ideally it'd somehow be squeezed into 36 when United have a blank, but when? United are playing on the 9th and 12th in GW35 and then Liverpool have a game on the 16th in GW36. Is Friday 14th feasible? would mean 3 games in 6 days for United if so.

If there are no fans can they not just shunt it out by 24 hours? I know that eats into the TV schedule but can't see any other obvious way (assuming it did get postponed)

Can someone explain to me why United fans are protesting? The Glazers have put over 1 billion into transfers over the last decade. They have the highest net spend in world football. What’s the reason for it?

The Glazers haven't done that. Any money spent has been generated by revenue or debt. The Glazers have just taken money out in the form of dividends.

This, not a hard concept to understand. On top of that the net spend argument needs context too, other than Ronaldo utd have been awful at transfers and negotiations, in buying but also in selling their players. And you could argue they got robbed by the Ronaldo one too

Simply they aren't football men, they occasionally throw money at things when things on the pitch go so terribly that it might affect their income, they're not proactive good owners. The money spent argument doesn't stand up under scrutiny though it is a decent point in a vacuum, outside the vacuum they are the owners, they hire the negotiators why are they always spending so much and overpaying

So football men with no money would do better, most owners of big clubs are in it for ego and profit. You could argue MU needed the Glazers more than they needed the club

Not saying they would be liked but yeah these protests probably wouldn’t be happening. Liverpool don’t have great owners either and their fans haven’t been doing protests like this because they’ve been very successful in the last 3 years.

Well yeah but does that comment even need to be said lol, obviously disliking them wouldn't turn into a mass protest if the club was still massively successful. But again in context utd have finished lower than second before and had no cup final, yet there were no protests so that proves it isn't solely about lack of success- ironically this season is one of their best for a long time

Nah you cannot read properly clearly because I said these protests wouldn’t be happening if Man Utd were actually successful at the moment. I never said Man Utd fans should like the Glazers, which is what you implied that I said “it’s disingenuous to think the Glazers have ever been liked by the fans”

Then you start waffling on with your passive aggressive comments that have no meaning. You’re weird man.

It isn't hard to understand here, if they were successful there would be no protest, but to imply its solely down to lack of success is just disingenuous, i was explaining how they were never liked in the first place

A quick explanation is that they bought the club with money that weren't theirs and haven't paid of that debt at all (it has actually gotten larger if I'm not mistaken) and also taken out at least 1-2 billions $/€/£ of the club and in to their own pockets.

So its now quiet around the ground and these idiots have been dispursed by the police. The issue now appears to be getting the teams to the ground safely particularly given that the protesters have stated an intent to prevent the team buses from getting there.

Which was their original intent re protests. The break in to Old Trafford was just a bonus.

what do you mean cancelled? Given that there is another game tomorrow, if they play this tomorrow, it would mean that it would still be within the gameweek.
