What can FPL managers expect from Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace?

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has taken the Crystal Palace hotseat vacated by Roy Hodgson.

The 45-year-old Frenchman has signed a three-year contract with the Eagles.

Recruitment is the club’s number one priority at present, as 11 first-team players saw their contracts expire at the end of June.

Some of those are expected to pen fresh deals, though Vieira will need to make further additions – after the capture of Michael Olise (£5.5m) – if he is to implement his style of play.

The History

After hanging up his boots in 2011, Vieira took over as the Elite Development Squad manager at Manchester City.

He stayed with the club until 2016, also coaching the reserve side, before taking the reins at City’s sister outfit New York City FC.

That led to an appointment as head coach at Ligue 1 outfit Nice in 2018, where Vieira completed two seasons – finishing a respectable seventh and fifth – before being sacked in December 2020.

Playing style

In his first interview as Crystal Palace manager, Vieira talked up a good attacking game:

I want the team to score more goals, to have more shots on target than we used to but at the same time, to keep this kind of mental strength that the team has created in the last couple of years – to become even stronger.

What I really want is to put a philosophy in place that my players understand really well, so that when they go on the field they can express themselves.

Because there is talent, and my responsibility will be to make that talent work well together. I want to see a team who is on the front foot.

However, his time at Nice tells the story of a coach who prioritised defence over attack.

In 2018/19, Nice conceded on 35 occasions – 17 fewer than they had let in the year before under Lucien Favre.

There was also a proportionate change in goals scored, with Vieira’s Nice managing just 30 goals compared to 53 with Favre at the helm.

The following curtailed season saw Nice up their goals-per-game average to 1.46, although that would still only roughly be mid-table in a typical Premier League season.

Man possessed

Vieira’s organised side defended through possession of the ball, as much as possible.

In his two full campaigns in France, only Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon kept the ball more than Nice in Ligue 1 – although his side ranked 13th and 10th respectively for attempts on goal in those seasons, suggesting something of a patient, potentially frustrating, style of build-up play.

George Swan, who played under Vieira at City, told the Athletic:

He’d like people to play through phases of play. You’d get it from the keeper, put it to the right-back and then he’d stop it and say, ‘the right-back has it, so you’re going to drop here and the midfielder is going to come here’. It was all about options. Everyone knew after time on the training pitch with him what was expected.

By contrast, only Newcastle (37.7%) and relegated West Brom (36.7%) kept less possession on average than Palace (39.8%) last season.

In May 2019, Nice goalkeeper Walter Benitez told France Football magazine of Vieira:

The overall idea of the coach is not to lose the ball too quickly, to keep it, to play and to have possession. The coach also adapts depending on who we are going to play.

Former Man City EDS captain George Glendon also recognised Vieira’s adaptability, telling the Athletic:

In the under-23s it’s all about development but in the senior team three points matter more, so he has balanced it out. But he is all about playing out from the back.

On beginning pre-season at the Selhurst Park club, Vieira himself said:

I think the first week is always important. To know the players, but [also] for the players to know how I want to work and the philosophy that I will want to implement in the football club.

The first week will be when I talk to the players individually, and try to understand where we are, what we want to achieve and explain to them the way I see the game and the way I want to build a team.

In an interview with BeIn Sports last year, Vieira also referenced his intention to lay down a blueprint as a head coach.

Going to New York and Nice allowed me to try things, to be more clear about things and the system I want to use and what I want from the players in that system. I have a big picture about how I want to play the game and how I am as a coach.

Despite all the positivity above, it’s worth mentioning this damning critique in Get French Football News upon his departure from Nice:

Despite an influx of creative talent, Nice were never truly convincing. Their defence, though solid, relied too often on the heroics of keeper Walter Benítez, and Vieira jumped from one formation to the next seemingly at random. Devoid of cohesion and creativity, Nice struggled to fashion chances for poacher Dolberg. Vieira’s philosophy was close to indecipherable.

The Prospects

As well as having the third-worst expected goals conceded figure in the division, Palace had the second-worst xG total.

A snapshot into that overall number is the Eagles’ 2-1 win away to Brighton in Gameweek 25, when they managed an xG of just 0.23.

Whether Vieira prioritises defence or attack, there is huge room for improvement in both areas at Selhurst Park.

As previously alluded to, transfers in are going to be all-important for the south London side.

“I have a really good idea about the team that we have. I think what we will need is to bring [in] players who can create chances; players who can score goals.” – Patrick Vieira

Vieira has already stuck to his word above with the signing of Olise, though Palace will need several more bodies – likely a mix of new and old – as the head coach looks to change the club’s style.

Fresh blood in midfield is also going to be required, particularly if Vieira has designs of implementing his own version of a 4-3-3 system at Palace.

The Frenchman largely used a four-man defence during his time at Nice, though did switch to a wing-back system at times.

“As midfielders it was, ‘one of you sit, two stay high, don’t clog it up by coming deeper’. When it came together, it looked really good. We also did a lot of work defensively on how to press the ball, which was a big learning curve. It was a very structured way of playing.” – former City youth midfielder Louis Hutton

As with any new manager, the proof will be in the pudding. We can look to pre-season for starter clues but it won’t be until the Gameweek 1 main course and beyond that we can really assess Vieira’s plan of action.

Given the slightly muddied picture painted above – the suggestion of tedious, low-scoring football at Nice married with Vieira’s comments about scoring more goals – it’s not the worst idea to stay clear of Palace for the time being, at least while the dust settles.

In truth, Fantasy managers will likely be targeting their opposition rather than the Eagles themselves: Vieira’s new charges sit bottom of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-10.

Doubt he'll be another Eze this season - at least early on. And Eze himself took a good time to settle and that was in a team that was much easier to adapt to.

Class player and an amazing signing for 8 mill but will need time to bed in. One thing in his favour is that he could well get deadballs.

Tekkers is an option perhaps. No worse than any other 6.5 forward and got him in last season because he looked happy and confident and was taking chances on. Despite the goal rush he had he could have scored a few more - that's a good sign - it's been an age since he was consistently getting on the end of chances.

I like this a lot, I think you’re on a winner with the double Pool defence opening fixtures are very good. Like your forward 3, as you seem to be playing the fixtures. Fernandez and Salah is standard enough.

      I wouldn’t want two 4.5 mids.

Traditionally, a 6.5 mid will seem like a good bandwagon after two weeks, bit of value. Purple patch etc…

But you can’t get him in without losing Sarr…

And Sarr has Wolves, Norwich, Newcastle, Leeds coming up…

So you have to take a hit, or avoid/miss out on him…

And that leads to a second bad decision down the line. Chasing points missed, or refusing to make the “right move”. 40 points “lost” down the line because of a bad structure.

Just my two cents. Happened to me before.

Palace looking woefully short in the squad. First team based on players who are still under contract:

    Guaita
    Ferguson Tomkins Kouyate Mitchell
    Milivojevic Riedewald McArthur
    Eze Benteke Zaha

I reckon they need to sign at least 5 of the players out of contract:

Clyne or Sakho (depending on whether they see Kelly as a RB or CB)
    PVA (as a LB)
    Schlupp (as a midfielder)
    McCarthy (as a midfielder)
    Townsend (as a winger)

      Way off

You've named two long term injuries who will be out till the end year with Achilles.

McCarthy is gone and good riddance sadly - never fit
Townsend has no intention of signing
      Cahill is very likely back
Ward is back and Clyne may be back up
      Kouyate is likely midfield

      Could go on 🙂

        That's why it looks poor.

CB: Cahill is past it, as is Dann.
LB: Mitchell is the only proper LB. PVA has not yet signed a new contract.
RB: Ferguson is injured so with Ward available you need another RB (possibly Kelly). Clyne has not yet signed a new contract.
MF: I have the contracted midfielders as Milivojevic, Kouyate, McArthur and Riedewald. McArthur is 33 and past his best. Schlupp has not signed a new contract yet.
FW / AM: The attackers are Benteke, Ayew, Mateta, Olise, Eze and Zaha. Eze is injured so there are only 5 attackers in the whole squad. Townsend has not yet signed a new contract.

Basically, Palace are relying on players re-signing or buying replacements. If they are going to rely on Rak-Sakyi (no matter how talented he is), Olise, Mitchell then it is not looking good. I reckon Palace need:

A CB (could be Sakho although he looks like leaving, could be a new signing)
A RB (could be Clyne, could be a new signing)
A LB (could be PVA although he looks like leaving, could be a new signing)
A MF (could be Schlupp, could be a new signing)
An AM (could be Townsend although he looks like leaving, could be a new signing)

Given Palace's history of opening the purse strings, I would not be counting on them signing a whole load of new recruits of the quality required. You might get Willock (but seems like he prefers Newcastle), Kabak (but he will be demanded by a lot of clubs), Claudio Gomes (inexperienced in the PL), but it looks like tough times for Palace.

You're still off on contract situation. Schlupp signed up long since. Sakho is long gone and no question of his returning etc etc

No questioning weakness at squad level. Signings are needed at CB and central midifield for sure and possibly wide up front but that's a lower priority. The signings there are very probably Vieira contacts from City bringing in someone nqxtgen and not for immediate consumption though someone like Nketiah or Lookman could happen as there is apparently a decent budget.

LB is covered in all likelihood internally. The next 4.0 is probably Hannan who was the star of the very good U23 side and covers there as do Riedewald Ward Schlupp Kelly who have all played there for us.

Palace xG and xGC since 2016/17

          2016/17: xG: 45.4 vs aG: 50, xGC: 50.0 vs aGC: 63
          2017/18: xG: 56.8 vs aG: 45, xGC: 53.5 vs aGC: 55
          2018/19: xG: 50.6 vs aG: 51, xGC: 52.8 vs aGC: 53
          2019/20: xG: 34.5 vs aG: 31, xGC: 57.4 vs aGC: 50
          2020/21: xG: 35.3 vs aG: 41, xGC: 61.9 vs aGC: 66

xG decreasing and xGC increasing. Average age of squad increasing. Lots of players out of contract.

I think Hodgson could see what was happening and bailed because he saw the size of the task ahead of him. Maybe Vieira is the man and will be the x-factor to halt the decline.

Players out of contract fairly irrelevant. Check who has been released.

Likely the only released player who featured to any extent last season will be Townsend. The one major difference there is likely a slightly shorter injury list - the injury table has been the one table Palace have topped consistently over the last 2 seasons. The effective squad size is surprisingly unaffected and the wage bill about 40 mill less. Yes we need players but 3/4 should do it.

Actually checked average age of squad - it's been consistent over the last 3 seasons. It's always been an old squad and was barely older last season than the previous two seasons under RH.

Not really seeing anything other than standard variation in your XG stats. Some better seasons and some worse. Certainly not a progression in any one direction. Palace should have been relegated long since if team XG and XGC meant what you want them to mean. Newcastle under Rafa likewise from memory.

Very strange comment about RH there,

Nice write up - and you've crushed my budding optimism about the new season. Well done.

Factor X for Palace this season isn't so much the squad but the manager imo. Can't see anything good coming of a slow possession based game at all. Very anti-Palace. Had you mentioned quick transitions I'd have been all over it.

First team still handy enough. Eze will be a huge miss and I'm guessing Olise is a year out (Eze is younger and less experiences and Eze started slowly enough) but the only other absentee is likely Townsend who has been very peripheral for a couple of seasons (not a natural Royballer).

Took one last season for Norwich and he is a deadball specialist. I imagine he was just second choice to Pukki.

yeah its decent, the attacking positions of Toney, Harrison, Sarr not easy to upgrade though, without downgrading one of the heavy hitters.

But the popular template has a similar midfield, with Rafa instead of Harrison, so would be a similar problem

Basically its Kane instead of DCL/Bamford, Toney instead of one of the 7.5m forwards, and a 4.5m defender, Lamptey, Holding etc who ever has better fixtures, instead of a 3rd forward

      It's punty of course

I'll likely not go there unless White signs to add cs appeal but he is a cracking player and is in Robbo Shaw territory for attacking threat. Got pretty much the same number of attacking returns as Shaw last season.

Also worth noting that Arsenal conceded not that many goals last season - they just always conceded one. There is definite room for much improved cs count - hence White caveat.

      Goals conceded last season

      City 32

Bit reluctant to trust WH defence early on as a Liverpool substitute. Some nice looking early fixtures but they're away mostly apart from the Palace banker and think home and away could be a big thing with fans back.

    I am currently here :

Currently thinking Havertz and Werner to be a Son/kane combo this year. Dont see Chelsea buying a new striker and expect this combo to play most games with Pulisic from the bench and Giroud and Tammy gone. People are sleeping on Chelsea here. Fixtures are ok and great value, also i dont see him rotating anywhere near as much now compared to when CL was vital

Plan to WC early as ever in week 6 at latest, week 3 earliest.

    Watford goalies
Robertson, Taa, James, Lamptey(or Veltman), 4m
    Bruno Salah Havertz, Mbeumo 4,5
    Toney Werner 4,5

        Cant see it happening.

Id wager its 90% certain they start with Werner and Havertz and give them a year to figure it out given they spent over 100mil on them

I dont see any potential striker on the market they can get - Haaland is very difficult to acquire for obvious reasons.

A team without Trent and Bruno, just for fun!

    Sanchez (4)
    Shaw Digne (x3 rotating 4.5)
    Salah Son Foden Rafa Buendia
    Kane Toney (4.5)

Would you downgrade Shaw to a 5.0 or a 4.5 to upgrade Harrison to Raphinha?

Shaw could be pure gold early doors if he plays from GW1, and I don't see a £5m that could cover that. I've got both LUFC mids at present (+ Shaw), but I don't think there'll be much between the pair of them come the end of the season. So no, probably not. Depends on the team as a whole, I guess.

If Shaw starts then no, one to monitor. I think United early games are very good tho. Notwithstanding I currently don’t have shaw or Leeds mids.

I'm having the same debate, and have reached the conclusion that its as broad as it is long. Probably Shaw, but only because Digne has burnt me too many times.

Coufal, but Moyes did say something about the Czech boys having a bit of a break, so maybe needs monitoring.
I'm not getting all the Lamptey love on here, but there must be a reason for it. Nowhere near nailed, and very brittle, imho.

If you could pick only one:

    1. Son
    2. Kane (Spurs)

Son. Kane isnt worth the extra 2.5m. There is every possibility Son could outscore Kane this season.

I think that's going a bit far, but Son does fit in a team with Salah, Bruno, and TAA, whereas Kane is a bit expensive to make that work.

Gilmore interests me a lot, quality player that can control the midfield. And has an eye for goal. If he is nailed he could be the biggest piece of candy in the bargain bucket in the middle.

Can’t see Chelsea letting him go to Norwich, or him wanting to go to Norwich, without the promise of 30+ games.

Few lads have left in the summer, (Tettey, Skipp, Vranic, Leitner, Steiperman) but a few have come in too.

Could do with Kenny McClean or Lucas Rupp getting sold to get him 38 games.

Everyone has the same or close templates for players.

If you leave Bruno or TAA for example out of your squad, to benefit a better squad from the extra money, would it not make sense to do so.

Also gives the potential for the other players to score big, and room to maneuver during the season.
Instead of replying on two or three players to score good amount of points each week.

    Just saying.

    Penny for your thoughts.

Bruno & TAA have excellent opening fixtures and are the best point scoring defenders and midfielders in the previous 2 seasons.

If you leave them out who do you replace them with ? Robbo & Salah would be just sideways.

If there is no playing 4.0 defender option, do you like to:

-Have two 4.5s as 4/5 defender and 2nd/3rd bench.
-Have a 4.0 third bench and upgrade the other defender to a 5.0.
      -Have a 4.0 third bench, a 4.5 4th defender and upgrade elsewhere?

yeah that's what i'm doing, i currently only have 1 big hitter in Salah, but that means i have a nice well balanced squad for the rest of the team, maybe after building a bit of value i will add another big hitter but right now i don't like the look of any team i make with two 12m+ players in it

Harrison and Raph are good value.

I might triple Leicester attack. Would be a good bet to see who scores most points from first 6 games with each attack.

        They worth the price.
Bamford is best mid priced striker in game.
Raph and harrison are good options too.

I suppose you ask yourself, “how many returns do I think they’ll get in GW2-10, and what % of them do my three get?”

“At £20.5m between them, this is/isn’t worth it”

I say to myself, can I find a better player with that price for that run of fixtures?
If I find, I will change them. Maybe neto/trincao

I agree, but if one is trying to fit nacho, Salah, Bruno, Son and 2 Pool defenders into their team it’s hard to fit in Leeds players.

            TAA Robbo Lamptey
            Salah Fernandez Buendia Harrison
            Bamford Antonio Watkins

I would rather get Raphinha over Harrison from day1 - Buendia has good first 3 fixtures so why get rid after 1 week? - would get Shaw over Robbo if looks likely to start otherwise Cancelo
( Walker will need time off and Cancelo can play right or left and well rested) and probably use some cash in improving what must be poor bench

Totally agree, Shaw picks up a lot of Yellows too. And Pool will most likely keep 5/6 more clean sheets over a season aswell.

With Maguire and Shaw possibly not going to be in the first XI in GW1, the well rested Leeds attackers will be chomping at the bit to get one over their rivals Man Utd in their game of the season. There's no better time to have 3 Leeds I think
