Toney brace, Shaw return date and Antonio runs riot: FPL pre-season notes

We round up more pre-season friendly action involving Premier League teams in our latest Scout Notes piece.

We previously looked at six-top flight teams who took part in warm-up matches on Saturday and now we turn our attention to half a dozen more: Brentford, Manchester United, Southampton, Watford, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

We’ll have the goal, assist and line-up information from all these games plus brief Fantasy Premier League-centric notes on each clash.

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the warm-up matches taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

QUEENS PARK RANGERS 4-2 MANCHESTER UNITED

  • Goals: Jesse Lingard (£7.0m), Anthony Elanga
  • Assists: Facundo Pellistri, Shola Shoretire

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Luke Shaw (£5.5m), Jadon Sancho (£9.5m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) won’t be back in full training with Manchester United until the beginning of August, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer confirmed on Saturday.

The United boss was asked about his international contingent and their post-tournament breaks, with some players back on the grass today but others still a week away from a return:

Many will join in training on Monday so they’ve got their catch-up, a few weeks. That’s unfortunately the way it is, every year where there is a tournament, we have to catch up and hopefully they’ve done the work we’ve told them to do when they’re away.

The English players and Fred, the ones who went all the way to the finals in the Copa America and the Euros – they needed a longer break. They’ll be back with us in about 10 days’ time.

Shaw is also recovering from broken ribs but is confident of a swift comeback and his services may well be needed on the opening day against Leeds, with Alex Telles (£5.0m) set to be out for a “few weeks”.

Solskjaer said of the Brazilian:

Unfortunately, Alex slipped and he twisted his ankle so he’ll be out for a few weeks. We’re hoping that it’s not going to be too bad but he’ll be out for a little while.

United were demolished 4-2 by QPR on Saturday but any concern at the unexpected scoreline is eased with one glance at the Red Devils’ line-up, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) and Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) the only real first-team regulars who were in action at Loftus Road.

Returning loanee Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) laid down a marker in the absence of Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), slipping United into an early lead before Solskjaer’s troops shipped on four occasions.

Lingard was deployed in the hole of United’s customary 4-2-3-1, with Greenwood once again leading the line.

Anthony Elanga curled home a late consolation for the visitors, who should have a few regulars back when they host Brentford in midweek.

Manchester United XI: Heaton (Grant 46), Wan-Bissaka (Galbraith 65), Mengi (Bernard 79), Tuanzebe (Fish 79), Williams (Hugill 79), Andreas (Levitt 65), Matic (Garner 46), Pellistri (Mata 46), Lingard (Hannibal 65), James (Elanga 46), Greenwood (Shoretire 65).

CELTIC 2-6 WEST HAM UNITED

Toney brace, Shaw's return date and Antonio runs riot: more FPL pre-season notes 1
  • Goals: Michail Antonio (£7.5m) x2, Mark Noble (£4.5m) pen, Said Benrahma (£6.0m), Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m), Armstrong Oko-Flex
  • Assists: Noble, Pablo Fornals (£6.0m) x2, Antonio, Benrahma

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Having failed to make too much of an impression in West Ham’s first two warm-up games of the summer, Michail Antonio (£7.5m) burst into life at Celtic Park on Saturday.

Exploiting the hosts’ high defensive line and error-strewn display, Antonio had fired a warning shot across the Celtic bows when racing clear and forcing a save out of Vasilis Barkas.

The mid-price FPL forward didn’t need another sighter, subsequently latching onto a Mark Noble (£4.5m) pass to round Barkas and then dinking a finish past the Greek shot-stopper to double his tally.

Antonio was then flattened for Noble’s 38th-minute penalty and ‘assisted the assister’ for Said Benrahma‘s (£6.0m) second-half strike, which was teed up by Pablo Fornals (£6.0m).

The forward reinforced Noble’s standing as first-choice penalty-taker after the game before going on to hail his teammates’ goalscoring form in pre-season:

I definitely did want it but obviously when the skipper is on the field there is only one person taking it!

But the boys are out there scoring goals – Jarrod has got quite a few goals in pre-season so hopefully he can carry that on into the season, Said had been struggling to get on the scoresheet last season so it’s good he’s got on the scoresheet this season already.

One thing we definitely need this year is goals from a lot of different players.

David Moyes echoed Antonio’s sentiments:

All the main players are beginning to get goals and you want them to get the confidence because we want to keep doing what we did last year. I thought we were exciting to watch, we were entertaining at times, but while we’re doing that we also need to make sure we’re good enough at the other end. We conceded two today and we could have conceded a couple more on another day so we need to make sure we tighten that up.

Pre-season results sometimes count for very little but exciting going forward and less than watertight at the other end was pretty much how the Hammers ended 2020/21: they were ranked joint-second for goals scored from Gameweek 29 onwards but kept just one clean sheet throughout that run.

Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) has been West Ham’s star performer of the summer and has caught the eye with some advanced shooting positions. Having earlier seen a one-on-one opportunity saved, he bagged his fourth attacking return in three games with a beautifully flicked finish to put West Ham 5-2 up.

Former Celtic man Armstrong Oko-Flex rounded off the scoring in Glasgow.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) made his first appearance of pre-season but Tomas Soucek (£6.0m) and Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m) were still absent after their EURO 2020 exertions.

West Ham United XI: Fabiański (Randolph 46), Fredericks, Dawson (Alves 77), Ogbonna (Diop 5), Cresswell, Noble (Forson 87), Lanzini (Coventry 66), Bowen (Holland 87), Fornals, Benrahma (Oko-Flex 77), Antonio (Johnson 72).

WATFORD 1-3 BRENTFORD
WATFORD 0-0 WEST BROMWICH ALBION

  • Goals: Henry Wise pen | Ivan Toney (£6.5m) x2, Halil Dervişoğlu (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Sergi Canos (£5.5m)

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS (WATFORD V WEST BROM)

Watford split their squad across two pre-season friendlies on Saturday, with the weaker of the two matchday parties – featuring three trialists – downed by Brentford at the Hornets’ training ground in an untelevised encounter.

Ivan Toney (£6.5m), who still sits in more than one in three FPL squads, was responsible for two of the Bees’ three strikes, first heading home a Sergi Canos (£5.5m) cross and then firing in a free-kick.

The chance of a hat-trick went begging in the second half when he spurned a one-on-one opportunity but substitute Halil Dervişoğlu (£5.5m) added a third for the visitors before Watford responded with a late penalty.

Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) made his Bees debut and there may have been a signal as to Thomas Frank’s intentions in 2021/22 as the newly arrived ex-Celtic stopper took his place as one of three centre-halves in a wing-back system.

The Brentford website reported that Ajer got into a number of attacking positions, suggesting he may have license to roam from that back three this season.

There was again no Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m), who also missed the win over Boreham Wood last Tuesday for unexplained reasons.

Watford drew a blank in their other match but budget forward Cucho Hernandez (£5.0m) really caught the eye on the left of Xisco’s front three, teeing up a handful of chances for his teammates and attempting the spectacular himself with two bicycle-kicks.

A misfiring Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m) wasted the best of those opportunities when completely shanking an effort from eight yards out but was at least continually getting into promising positions, also forcing a save after the interval and seeing a strong shout for a penalty waved away.

Watford XI v West Brom: Foster (Elliot 46), Ngakia (Abbott 75), Troost-Ekong (Langston 75), Cathcart (Hall 75), Masina (Trialist 7), Etebo (Wise 75), Gosling (Smith 75), Cleverley (Mebude 46), Sarr (Pochettino 60), Deeney (King 60), Hernández (Crichlow 60).

Watford XI v Brentford: Bachmann (Dahlberg 46), Trialist (Trialist 80), Sierralta (Trialist 63), Kabasele (Langston 46), Rose (Andrews 63), Louza (Muwonge 70), Lo-Everton (Smith 70), Sema (Wise 46), Baah (Crichlow 70), Fletcher (Hunter 70), Dennis (Mebude 70).

Brentford XI: Raya (Gunnarsson 60), Ajer (Racic 46), Goode (Stevens 60), Pinnock (Russell 60), Canós (Dervişoğlu 60), Baptiste (Haygarth 60), Janelt (Oksanen 60), Thompson (Gordon 60), Ghoddos (Valencia 60), Toney (Forss 60), Fosu (Roerslev 46).

REAL BETIS 0-1 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

  • Goal: Patrick Cutrone
  • Assist: Nelson Semedo (£5.0m)

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Rayan Ait Nouri (£4.5m) had another ‘out of position’ run-out down the left wing on Saturday as Bruno Lage marked his first win as Wolves boss.

Lage tweaked his formation from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1, with Fabio Silva (£6.0m) benched and a sharp-looking Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) leading the line.

The Mexican was denied a one-on-one shooting opportunity thanks to a particularly horrendous offside call, while Ait Nouri caught the eye going forward – although again, the imminent return of Adama Traore (£6.0m) will mean that Lage soon has more natural options available to him down the flanks.

Wolves lost Willy Boly (£5.0m) to an early injury but we did see a number of their assets make their pre-season bows, including Jose Sa (£5.0m) and Nelson Semedo (£5.0m).

It was an advanced Semedo who teed up the only goal of the match, crossing for Patrick Cutrone to finish in the final 10 minutes.

Wolves were in action again on Monday, taking on Las Palmas – and we’ll have notes on that game tomorrow.

Wolves XI: Ruddy (Sa 46), Hoever (Semedo 46), Boly (Kilman 17), Saiss (Otasowie 76), Marcal (Mosquera 60), Perry (Neves 46), Moutinho (Marques 60), Gibbs-White (Cundle 60), Trincao (Silva 60), Ait-Nouri (Bueno 76), Jimenez (Cutrone 60).

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 FULHAM

  • Goal: Shane Long
  • Assist: Michael Obafemi (£4.5m)

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Southampton’s first pre-season involvement saw them draw a behind-closed-doors friendly with Fulham on Saturday.

New signing Romaine Perraud (£5.0m) got his first run-out in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s usual 4-2-2-2 set-up, with FPL midfielder Nathan Tella (£5.0m) deployed ‘out of position’ up top in the first half.

Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m) was used at left-back after the interval, showing his naivety in that position when giving away a spot-kick but impressing going in the other direction.

Shane Long tapped in Michael Obafemi‘s (£4.5m) cut-back for the Saints’ only goal, with the former joined by Danny Ings (£8.0m) in a front two for the second half.

Southampton first-half XI McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Stephens, Salisu, Perraud, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Walcott, Elyounoussi, Tella, Adams.

Southampton second-half XI: Forster, Valery, Bednarek, Salisu (Olufunwa 77), Djenepo, Diallo, Armstrong, Obafemi, Redmond, Long, Ings.

    Which is better?

    A. Son + Shaw + ESR (3-5-2)
    B. Antonio + Chilwell + 7.5 mid (3-4-3)

Close call but I'm edging towards B now with Jota

It might depend on whether Son is needed as captain option in week 3.

Nope. I see him as an explosive rotating City mid. Another midfielder will come in with 2 points when he's benched

    Currently on

    Fabs 4.0
    Taa shaw white digne coady
    Salah Bruno Raph buendia gundo
    Antonio Toney 4.5

Hate the 4.5 striker but better value mids or drop gundo for Watkins and pick brownhill?

Likely returns of 2 points from a. 4.5 mid makes that spot a near irrelevance to me. Prefer to go with favoured pick and live with ten for a week if the worst comes to the worst.

Got 2 subs as it is, obviously with COVID and delayed starts having to prepare for the worse but thinking 3rd sub is rarely going to be used

Two is quite enough in my book and right now looking at one.

I suppose one caveat to the 4.5 spot is whether you have a likely rotation risk (City Chelsea) - if there is a risk then a number of 2 points may add up to something more relevant.

If COVID does become an issue then I'll switch tactics but on week 1 budget I'm happy to go aggressive and it should be easy enough to wangle a second sub with FTs

I agree two subs sub be enough. If there is a week that is a rare exception requiring the use of all three subs then I am happy to accept the possibility of only have 10 players because this scenario will be very rare. Especially if your starting XI is mainly nailed on starters. I have 10 nailed on starters and the more dubious Mahrez. My bench is £5.0m and 2 x £4.5m (Obafemi being 3rd sub).

Always a danger of playing the wrong season but I got negligible bench points last season despite carrying quite a heavy bench throughout. For instance I had Soucek with close to a 100% fail rate - one goal despite holding him for all the good times and even starting him as my 3rd mid 🙂

I'm just letting bench points fall where they will this time.

I think it’s decent but I’m not a fan of the 4.5 striker. I’d personally drop Gundo for Watkins and throw Brownhill in.

I’ve gone with this as a result - well today anyway: -

      Bachmann
      Coufal Targett Robertson
      Salah Raphinha Soucek Bruno
      Wilson DCL Watkins

      Foster Brownhill Fofana Ayling

I’m not overly happy with Soucek but not sure who else to run with there. I do have 1m in the bank so could go up to 7m.

I had soucek in an early draft but switched out

        Barnes at 7.0
        ERS at 5.5

Think taa is worth the .5 based on end of season form

Likewise digne and cresswell got to be worth the .5 on coufal

I feel like the planets lined up just right for Gundo last year and I'm expecting to see some regression. I'd feel safer with Watkins, and those first three fixtures are certainly friendly.

Of course you could start with Gundo and switch to Mount after four weeks or so if Gundo isn't firing. Get some of those early nasty fixtures for Chelsea out of the way.

Your draft is looking a lot like mine was before I made the stupid/clever decision to go from Bruno to Son. It just seems like I get more points using the marginal 2.0 in other places, but those are some famous last words right there.

    What is best?

    A) A very strong starting eleven and a weak bench.

    B) A strong starting eleven and also a decent bench with at least one player to rotate with.

I usually go with A but have like two 4.5 defenders and maybe a 4.5 attacker on the bench. So basically my bench should always include 2 defenders that can come on if needed.

    Quick question fellow travelers,

I see in the projections that Llorente is projected to outscore Ayling over the course of the season (by around 8 points). Given that they are teammates (clean sheet points should be relatively similar) and that Ayling seems to present more attacking threat, should I chalk the Llorente>Ayling projection to an algorithm quirk, or am I missing something along with everyone else who is on Ayling rather than Llorente?

Ayling should have had a couple of returns last season in which case I think he’s be top and would also have been the top scoring 4.5 in the league

Anyway I still like him just because he seems resistant to injury and 100% nailed

Thank you for the comment. The projections putting Llorente over Ayling just aren't matching up with my spider sense, and I'm certainly no fan of blindly following the tools in the members area . . . better to blindly follow the advice of posters whom I've never met.

That said, I'm on Fofana right now but am thinking quite a lot about switching to Ayling.

Atm I have digne shaw taa so I’ll only really need ayling to play if one is injured/benched, last thing I want is that to happen then my 4.5 bench isn’t even starting

I have TAA, Digne, Stones (Shaw's ribs scared me off recently). Ayling/Fofana would be my #4 defender and be parked on the bench most weeks. My #5 defender will be a 4.0 I haven't settled on yet . . . hoping that one emerges as a viable source of minutes.

            Sanchez, 4.0
            TAA, Digne, Stones, Fofana, 4.0
            Salah, Son, Mount, Raph, Gilmour
            DCL, Antonio, Watkins

0.5 ITB to turn Watkins into Bamford week 4/5

Yeah so i would much much rather have ayling there than fofana because on the small chance fofana doesn’t start you are in a pickle as soon as stones is benched

Looking at Fofana's game log from last season, he was pretty much nailed on since he started week five. He missed the month of February, but I'd be (haven't confirmed it) that he was injured because it's just weird that he'd miss 4-5 matches in a row and then be a regular again through the end of the season.

It might be prudent to pick Ayling since he seems about as nailed as can be and the marginal difference in projections between Ayling and Fofana is something like four points over the course of the season. On the other hand, if we're thinking that we're covering for a random week where Stones doesn't play (which is exactly what I'm thinking), then I'd rather get the cover from the Leicester defense than the Leeds defense.

                Six of one . . .

Re Fofana game log, that was with Leicester playing 3 CBs. There's more potential for only two starting this season and with Evans and Soy for competition, that means Fofana is not nailed. I've dropped until I hear something that allays this concern.

                You know he is!

Right now I'm on Brandon Williams thinking that he's either going to be loaned out or that he could get a sneaky start or two at the beginning given Shaw's ribs and Telles' ankle.

Due to fixtures, may I suggest *starting with* Veltman/Webster? Not much to lose there, and they should be nailed with White leaving. Expected rank is Dunk, Webster, Veltman (moves to RCB when Lamptey is fit), then Burn (backup for all positions) for nailedness based on last season. Also a surprisingly better defence than Leicester's

Ayling can come in with a spare FT later, especially from GW5

I've been looking at the Brighton assets for sure given their early fixtures. Have Sanchez already and was actually trying to think in terms of that 4.5 not changing over the course of the season barring injury. I'd like to use my transfers on more productive assets.

Would have been on Lamptey from the beginning had he not been injured, and I'm looking forward to being swayed when the projections page changes after White officially becomes a Gunner.

It's all still written in water.

Oh! 4.5 D is a slot I'm always open to changing often, especially early in the season when gems emerge. So I guess that's where our styles differ. Based on your style, I'd say I think Ayling works better for you: more upside than Fofana and a very similar club defensive record. Have fun 🙂

Going back to the OP, I like Llorente as a differential. I can see how he could outscore Ayling by picking up baps when Leeds keep clean sheets.
Generally, 4.5 defenders are for rotation or on the bench.

Luke Thomas and Ait Nouri as a rotation pairing :

WOL, whu, nor, wat, BRE, BUR, NEW

Not bad opening fixtures however, I would only punt on this if Thomas starts wingback in the community shield and Ait Nouri continues playing leftwing in preseason. Could be a fair few attack returns from them if so.

Greenwood has to be injured or prove to be horrible for Cavani to start more games than a Pep attacker would

          And Martial is still around

Cavani's game time is a huge caveat in FPL until proven false. It happened last season, even with his excellent performances

I am going to say B simply because Salah has better fixtures to be captained at than Bruno and Jota is not 100% to get enough minutes. If Cavani is a starter and they turn to 4-3-3 he will slowly become a must-have.

Hi guys, I am having serious doubts about Coufal.
    - better value than Cresswell, yes
    - assist potential - yes
but I don't think WHU have much of a clean sheet potential in first 7 GWs - not even CRY / BRE / SOU games seems to likely to me

Do you have a case for/against him?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

Coufal got 9 assists without set pieces last season, and he was unlucky sometimes. Clean sheets are a bonus for him. And, as bad as things might be, West Ham's fully fit squad should still keep somewhere around 3 clean sheets in those 7 games

Injuries would drain that confidence though

      1. Club-De-Belon
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah I watched him play and he was truly unlucky a few times. My favourite assist was when he hit Bowen like a post and it bounced to goal, haha.
The assist potential is clear to me, but if he has one or two in those 7 games, and let's say - no clean sheet - for extreme comparison. I think it would be better to try Castagne/Pereira for 5.5. Clean sheet potential looks better and assist potential is similar. But then I would have 0 WHU players which does not seem all right.

I'm wary of West Ham myself, their form dipped fairly heavily at the end of last season (especially defensively) and there are still questions at the other end of the field (Antonio's fitness, whether Lingard will rejoin or not or if there's a replacement to be signed). At the minute I have Rice on my bench and I'm fine with him as 5.0 cover that plays every game (and 90 minutes nearly every game at that) and being on pens and having some threat at setpieces. But I'm wary of going with anyone else and having to rely on them. Cresswell is on most setpieces and always is great for baps so if you had the money I'd choose him, but I do think there are better 5.5 options to start off with to at least see if West Ham tighten up defensively again

      1. Club-De-Belon
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

I have similar opinion on the defensive quality drop (even though Fabiansky could be a decent differential).
I like the Rice pick. As far as I remember he was also on their first penalty of the season, until Lingard took the next one from him (and tried to take the first one out of his hands too).

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah Fab is always good for save points and baps too because of that. Sorry your question was more about Coufal than Cresswell, I too think Coufal was a bit unlucky to not have more assists (and goals even) last season and finished the season well. As you say it's a bit of a dilemma, he might get a few returns but only one CS or two and someone else might only get one return but a few more cs and a better return overall. I also read that Coufal is a bit irritated with the way West Ham are dealing with his contract situation, probably only a small matter that will be resolved but I'd keep an eye on it
