FanTeam €200k winner Josh Wooldridge’s best team reveal for £1m Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

It’s only days until FanTeam’s season-long 2021/22 Premier League Fantasy game gets underway, with another guaranteed £1m up for grabs.

And who better to turn to for advice on the big-money FPL-style game than Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €200k first prize.

Josh is writing for Fantasy Football Scout in the upcoming campaign and, having provided us with some top tips in his first article, he reveals his latest team draft here.

Hi all!

With the Premier League season beginning this coming Friday, it was an easy decision with regards to what to write my FanTeam article on this week.

I am going to do an in-depth analysis on my favourite draft, explaining why I picked each player, and I will even throw in some alternatives on one or two spots that I need a bit more information on.

I hope you enjoy!

Goalkeepers

Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m)

This was a tough call for me. I started the summer wanting to pick Dean Henderson (£5.0m), but it looks like he is now going to miss the start of the season. Bachmann has the ability to make lots of saves, in a Watford team that set defensive records in the Championship last season. At such a budget price, I think he has two avenues to points- and will make enough saves, and hopefully keep enough clean sheets, to justify this inclusion.

Ben Foster (£4.0m)

Foster is the natural understudy to Bachmann. I love pairing goalkeepers together from the same team, as long as they cost a combined £8.5m or less. I am confident Foster is second choice at Watford, and trust that he could step in if needed – both for the Hornets and my Fantasy team.

Defenders

.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m)

Alexander-Arnold is such a powerful option on any Fantasy game, providing he is fit and the Liverpool defence looks solid. Whilst last season didn’t show much evidence on the latter, hopefully the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) can help to rectify last year’s defensive woes. Alexander-Arnold missing out on the Euros could be a blessing for Liverpool, who now have their star defender fully rested.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m)

Everton’s poor pre-season form is a slight worry but I always like Digne in Fantasy games, as he has the threat at both ends of the pitch. I think the £5.5m price tag is more than reasonable, and under Rafael Benitez, you would hope that the Toffees defence becomes even more solid. With Gylfi Sigurdsson (and potentially James Rodriguez) potentially out of the picture, Digne may take a larger proportion of set pieces this year, which can only help his FanTeam output.

Joel Veltman (£4.5m)

With many casualties in the Brighton defence and a few additional doubts, Veltman is one of the last men standing for the Seagulls that I am confident is nailed. £4.5m is a fantastic price for an asset from a team with such strong expected defensive numbers as Albion, and whilst the injuries may set them back, my three £4.5m defender picks are chosen with a more long-term strategy in mind.

Luke Ayling (£4.5m)

Ayling was probably the most attacking player in the league last year not to register an attacking return. He was unlucky on several occasions last time out, and I am confident that he will get several this time around. He also rotates perfectly with Veltman, so it makes sense to pick alongside the Brighton man.

Nelson Semedo (£4.5m)

I was slightly worried when I saw that Semedo wasn’t in the Wolves squad over the weekend but it has since come out that he is merely isolating due to contact tracing and will be available for selection for the opening Premier League fixture. Wolves do not have a good first three matches but Gameweeks 4-7 are particularly strong fixtures. With this in mind, I am happy to pick who I deem to be one of Wolves’ most nailed defenders, with some attacking potential as a bonus.

He will be on the bench. Probably come on for Martial around 60min mark, and Greenwood moves to middle.

Excuse a repost, time to get up soon!

Pretty much there, just one spot im playing around with-

    Sanchez
    TAA Tsimikis Coufal Shaw
    'Havertz' Salah Bruno Raphina
    Ings Toney
Foster Veltman Brownhill Obafemi 2.0M ITB

    A. Start like this and move Havertz on later to a MC mid or Son, 2M ITB
B Mahrez over Havertz now and can still move to Son 1M ITB
C Start with Son 0.5M ITB

    Any thoughts really welcome, thanks

The main idea of Havertz is to get a look at Man City and see if Gundo or Grealish look on.

I would just start with Son and save transfers- very good team. One minor point. I noticed tonight Dane Scarlett added as 4.5 m forward- as Obafemi likely to move to Blackburn I would shift to him. Exciting young prospect

Just going to give you all my take on the Tsimikas situation.
Unless you’re getting him to replace TAA allowing you to go from 6.5m mid > Son or from 8.5m mid > Mane/Bruno then there’s no point.
The alternative is saving measly 0.5/1m on a defender but at the same time you’re doubling up on a liverpool defence that is questionable even with VVD’s easing back in. You’d probably be better off keeping the 4.5/5m you had already.
Use Tsimikas right or don’t use him at all

I agree; sort of. I understand your logic, but for those who were getting Robertson as well as TAA ( I wasn’t), then replacing him with a cheaper version makes sense. If they had faith enough to double up, then why not Tsmikas?

But even a questionable Liverpool defence is good value for just 4m over most 4.5m defenders

If you are happy to have a 7.5 def but not a 4.0 in the same team something, imo, is wrong

I had Robbo with TAA so bringing in Tsimi has allowed me to get Son over Buendia as well with a little shuffling of bench. So sorry think definitely worth it. It also stops me from looking at Jota who I like but know will frustrate me when he’s benched.

Nat Phillips was a MONSTER value last year as a playing 4.0 Liverpool defender, averaging 4.0 PPM in his 17 matches. It's doubtful Tsimikas gets that many appearances (I'm assuming he's good until International break but who knows), but either way, IMO he's way too hard to pass up at that price point -- whether you have TAA or not

    7. MGMT
      • 11 Years

That would be a valid point if you were talking about Phillips last year, but Tsimikas does have attacking treat. Used to play as a WB in Olympiacos and has had a really good pre-season grabbing 2-3 assists. A really nice asset for 3 GWs at least @4.0M

Completely disagree, if you're happy to have TAA at 7.5 then having the cheapest available spot on a double up makes sense. Yes you get tied down on a Liverpool spot but were you really going to triple up when the dust has settled and everyone is available?

What I'd say is every point gained is valuable, last season my main private league went down to the wire where 10 points covered the top 6, I went on to lose but I lost valuable opportunity points early on, so I won't be making that mistake again.

Looks like you’re desperate to get a City mid in. I’ve decided to go without any as I’m not sure who is going to play and what their shape will look like. Do you think it’s worth having a reasonably high priced City asset that might not play? Or plays deep in Gundo’s case depending on formation? It does seem wrong having none, but looking at each individually I see too much risk.

Hi guys. Any feedback on this team? If Buendia doesn't play, Raph will come in. Or should i not bench Raph even against United away?

    Sanchez (4.0)

    Shaw, Tsimikas, White (Amartey, 4.0)

    Salah, Bruno, Buendia, Barnes (Raphinha)

    Vardy, Ings, Toney

Not a big fan of Vardy, especially when you already have Barnes. Think defence could seriously face some issues unless you're planning the early WC. But I'd really try and get White in for your 4.0

Not sure Vardy is worth sacrificing TAA gor but he's your only non tenplate pick so like it. Of your front 8 you gotta bench Raph but he did get 2 assists in the 6-2.

Not sure about having 3x 4.0 defenders. I’d take Buendia (potential injury) or Vardy out to bulk up the defence. Lots of good options at 5-5.5 in defence.

Like the Rudiger pick. I’ve got him as well, but not seeing much Chelsea love on here even though I’d say their defence is fixture proof. Can clean sheet against even City and pool.

No TAA could cost. I see him as better option that the extra mid, Greenwood or Barnes.

    Sanchez, Foster
    TAA, Rudiger, Konsa, Tsimi, (Amartey)
    Salah, Bruno, Son, (Bissouma, Brownhill)
    Ings, Antonio, Toney

Main issue i see is getting onto mid price midfielders given I can’t do any direct swaps, but with 2 transfer I can get Son out and spread funds.

Rudiger is one I’ve taken a punt on purely for GW1, but can see myself sticking with him if Chelsea look rock solid at the back again. Can clean sheet against anyone!

Ah thanks. I didn’t realise they’d signed another CB. I really do want a Villa defender for those opening games though. Feel they’re a better option than White or Ayling given those fixtures.

Think Cash is maybe a better option? I’m just worried Young will play on either flank and take his game time.

They can all be rotated which is why I don’t rly recommend. After the first three gwks they’ve also got v hard fixtures. At 4.5-5 look at Ayling or targett as villa do have good first three fixtures but get him out after that

Start with Toney and easy switch to Pukki after GW4 when fixtures change.

why are ppl avoiding digne when he’s a great player with great fixtures?

I’d like to have him, but their preseason form is a worry and Richarlison and DCL most likely to miss early games which dents his assist potential. Digne and Rich play well together on the left. He’s still a good option though.

But not a great FPL choice. His PPG and other stats weren’t great

best City mid for the next 3 gw excluding Mahrez?

    a) Gundo
    b) Torres
    c) others

None. Too much risk for me and they spread the goals so much that it’s hard to nail down who their talisman is going to be early doors.

I'm on Gundogan. Looks safe for a while, only concern is he will play a holding role with Rodri if they decide to deploy Grealish in the hole of a 4-2-3-1. Plenty of other options to sideways or go down to as well from Gundogan.

      C) Grealish

If he gets minutes from start huge potential

Am I the only one nervous about picking Antonio for week 1?

Newcastle routinely owns West Ham, and Antonio has returned 1 goal in 5 appearances against them.

Callum Wilson, on the other hand, has scored more goals against West Ham than any other team.

Both teams like to play counter attacking football so inevitably a hard one to predict. West Ham look very solid at the back and with the VAR being a bit more stricter on pens I'd give the edge to Antonio to get a return over Wilson. Ownership scares me to not own Antonio as I would much rather spend 6m on Benhrama.

Dont stress it,we will all end up changing out teams after GW1.

Went with Antonio, stronger team and create more

West Ham I believe are also in the market for 2 strikers.
European football has me slightly hesitant on Antonio.

Anyone able to sell me on Bachmann over Sanchez?

Want to pick him badly as I like the fact him and Foster are set and forget but have obvious concerns about their quality coming up to the premiership.

Worried also about Sanchez getting off to a banger and missing out on his ownership.

You know Wood's ruining that CS in the first 20 minutes. El Ghazi on the other hand could easily miss a penalty.

The only reason I want Toney is because he plays the first match and I'll be watching. Is that enough reason to get him?

The only reason I don't pick Toney is because he plays the first match of the season. If he blanks, I will be happy and will enjoy the rest of my week. If he scores, I still have hope with my other players.

Seconded. I'm a big fan of the guy and glad he got a PL move. However, he's not one to start with for sure especially with JWP out as well. WCGW7 might be a great time to get him.

I've got 4 likely starters on my bench that play Burnley, Wolves, Brentford and Norwich.
Be crazy not to BB lol.

Think my mind had been made up after researching the potential blanks and double gameweeks. According to the experts there'll likely be only one big double towards the end of the season. Much more straightforward this season apparently (i)

      *sry hit post by accident

Seems to me that unless you're adamant on holding your second WC until GW 36 I think it could be the BB chip might be best used alternatively this season.

    B)
    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, Shaw, Cancelo, Ayling, White
    Salah, Greenwood, Mahrez, Barnes, Jota

I guess A is the one if a little too template for my liking. Was set on B with Robbo and Raph but with Tsimikas emerging it seems stupid not to upgrade to Bruno, and a lot of rotation risks in B as well. Thanks both

            I believe he is close.
They did have injury scares in one of their friendlies but to my knowledge they are fine.

No, he was only deputising at CB last season due to an injury crisis.
The closest he will get to CB is if he plays on the right side of the 3-3-1-3 formation Bielsa sometimes uses.

I’d say he’s RB unless they have CB injuries when he would move in. So RB for now at least i would think.

Currently have Antonio also... debating myself between a 442 with Benrahma/Raphinha or a 433 with Toney... but 433 just feels wrong idk
