FPL Gameweek 10 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned

Following the points bonanza of Gameweek 9, there were some more modest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) scores posted on Saturday.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 10 fixtures.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 10 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 17

Mason Mount (£7.6m) was transferred in by more FPL managers than any other player in the run-up to Gameweek 10 but he was a shock absentee from the Chelsea matchday squad on Saturday.

The Blues confirmed that Mount missed out through illness, with Thomas Tuchel so far not offering us more details on the issue.

Ben White (£4.4m) and Martin Odegaard (£5.5m) returned from illness and injury respectively for Arsenal’s win over Leicester City but Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) was again absent, with Mikel Arteta offering a fairly downbeat assessment of the left-back.

“He didn’t train with the team yesterday, he’s still not feeling good, he’s still in pain, and he is not comfortable when he’s running. He was struggling so we’re trying to help him as much as possible, we need him back and I don’t know when that will be.” – Mikel Arteta on Kieran Tierney

Liverpool lost Naby Keita (£5.0m) to a hamstring injury in the draw with Brighton, the same injury that saw Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) miss out on Brentford’s loss to Burnley. Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) recovered from a hamstring strain to make the matchday squad at Turf Moor but remained an unused substitute, while teammates Ethan Pinnock (£4.7m) and Vitaly Janelt (£5.0m) made playing comebacks.

“He showed me the hamstring and how people told me, it’s hamstring. I cannot say more.” – Jurgen Klopp on Naby Keita

On the suspension front, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) was dismissed for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and will now miss the Manchester derby in Gameweek 11.

GAMEWEEK 10 TAKEAWAYS

FPL Gameweek 10 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 16
UNITED CHANGE SHAPE AND BETTER AT BOTH ENDS

After the misguided attempts to play Liverpool at their own pressing game last week led to a 5-0 humping, it always looked likelier that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would adopt a safety-first approach this week.

And so it transpired, with Solskjaer bringing in a third centre-half in the shape of Raphael Varane (£5.5m) alongside Victor Lindelof (£4.8m) and Harry Maguire (£5.4m).

The result was a much improved, more compact defensive display, although how much that owed to Spurs’ own attacking limitations – they have scored more league goals than just two other sides this season – is another question.

The Manchester derby follows next and City will not find it as easy to cut through the United backline as Jurgen Klopp’s troops, but will pose a darn sight more threat than a limp Spurs outfit who didn’t manage a single shot on target.

At the other end, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) benefitted from having a partner in the form of Edinson Cavani (£8.4m) alongside him, assisting the Uruguayan for the Red Devils’ second goal having scored a wonder-strike to break the deadlock.

Spurs, however, were abysmal and questions will be asked about their own Fantasy assets despite their forthcoming favourable run.

CORNET SCORES AGAIN

Maxwel Cornet (£6.0m) made it four goals in just 282 minutes of pitch-time with a superb strike in Burnley’s 3-1 win over Brentford. No FPL midfielder under £10.0m can better the Ivory Coast international – who was again stationed in a central role behind Chris Wood (£6.7m) – for goals scored in 2021/22, despite his shortage of first-team action.

Despite a paucity of clean sheets for Burnley, Matthew Lowton (£4.4m) moved up to third in the £4.5m-and-under defenders’ points table with his third and fourth attacking returns of the campaign.

ALL ABOARD THE PALACE TRAIN?

The headlines may say ‘Palace beat 10-man City’ but what shouldn’t be forgotten is that the Eagles were already 1-0 up by the time Laporte saw red, with Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) and Conor Gallagher (£5.6m) putting in some convincing auditions ahead of their side’s favourable fixture run:

Image

Gallagher is now the highest-scoring FPL midfielder under £10.0m, having bagged his sixth and seventh attacking return of the campaign in the win at the Etihad.

At the back, Patrick Vieira’s side didn’t allow their hosts one big chance and now have the division’s third-best expected goals conceded (xGC) total this season.

RAMSDALE A SAFE PAIR OF HANDS

Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m) produced a series of excellent stops to help Arsenal to a 2-0 win at Leicester. His save percentage (85%) and points-per-match average (5.6) are second only to those of Edouard Mendy (£6.1m) among first-choice goalkeepers this season, although some consideration has to be given to the calibre of opponent since he made his debut in Gameweek 4.

FEAST OR FAMINE FOR JAMES

Reece James (£5.6m) is now Chelsea’s leading goalscorer in the Premier League this season following his brace at Newcastle. Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) brought home two bonus points for his owners but otherwise took a backseat to his opposite wing-back, who has plundered 52 points in three of his seven appearances this season.

His scores this season sum up the rollercoaster nature of owning him in FPL: 1, 18, 1, 1, 1, 13, 21.

James now averages 8.0 points per match in 2021/22 and is among five Chelsea assets who lead the way for points per game among defenders (the below table doesn’t reflect today’s bonus points):

SALAH THE MOST-CAPTAINED…. EVER

Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) was made skipper by over 4.6 million managers in Gameweek 10, making him the most-captained player in a single Gameweek in FPL history.

A solitary assist in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Brighton was slightly underwhelming but few other legitimate captaincy alternatives did too much better elsewhere.

Above: The most-captained players among the top 10,000 FPL managers

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 10

James can’t be bettered for shots on target in Gameweek 10 so far and was among the top ten performers for goal attempts, penalty box touches and efforts in the opposition area on Saturday.

FPL Gameweek 10 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 12

Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) created a joint-Gameweek-high five chances in the defeat to Arsenal, taking him to 12 key passes in the last four Gameweeks – a total beaten by only Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m) in that time.

Adam Armstrong (£5.9m), back in the Southampton starting XI, topped the day’s expected goal involvement (xGI) count. Despite his assist, however, his finishing continues to frustrate and he has now scored from just one of his 27 shots this season.

Agreed. I might be accused of sounding like a broken record but the price change mechanism needs an ovehaul. A player's price should not rise nor fall between the last deadline and to when they next play.

He manages a team for TOP 5 positions for some years now, done well with Celtic and were good for Liverpool before they sold suarez and sterling and sturridge went off the cliff. Look at that a Leicester team and i would say guiding that to TOP 5 finishes is pretty good. Hets the best out of Vardy, good with toung talents and have decent tactical and technical approach.

Team for next GW. Have 1 FT and 0.2 itb.

    Ramsdale
    Chilwell TAA James Cancelo
    Salah Havertz Foden Mbuemo
    Vardy Antonio

    Bench: Hwang, Livramento, Normann, Foster

Thinking about Havertz as the weakest link, maybe to ESR and save some money. Or just save FT?

    Any suggestions?

I think you can save FT but personally I did Havertz to ESR before the price changes for exact funds. I know it’s a short period of time he had to fill, but he just isn’t gutsy enough for me, ESR is hungry and Watford next!

    Sa - 4.0
    TAA - Cancelo - Chilwell - Livra - Williams
    Salah - Son - Saka - Sarr - Allan
    Vardy - Jimenez - Toney

    0.3 ITB, 1 FT

Use FT to ship Sarr? If so, to whom?

Just do White to Chilwell if you can afford it

Cornet and Son can wait a couple of weeks and Ronaldo should prosper with Cavani alongside him as target man

This. But sounds like OG needs the money... I'd consider ESR/Gallagher instead of Cornet, two teams that will score more goals than Burnley. Would not do the second move, mostly because Jesus does not seem remotely worth it. If you have another good Son + x idea, then maybe.

Hey DZ. Currently looking into use 1FT barring any injuries midweek.

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Azpi Livramento Rudiger
    Salah(C) ESR Son
    Hwang

    Foster, Antonio, Raphinha, Scarlett.

How does Azpi > Reece James sound?

This is where the strong bench comes into play 😉

Reason I got Azpi was for assured starts, but that isn’t happening. So might as well go with the wing back!

        Could easily get Chilwell though

Is it safe to say Reece James is first choice RWB for chelsea given his performances this season?

Sure he will get the odd benching but i cant see Azpi providing the same threat and energy as Reece. Hence expect Reece to start the majority of the games

    Thoughts?

He always was first choice RB, suspension and injury reduced his playtime - but he's not nailed.

Started 12 out of 18 games in pl last season Expect similar game time this season as well. His upside is so high that he's worth it

(Highest scoring defender in the game despite starting only 4 gws this season proves it) and as FLAIR said injury and suspension hindered his gametime this season

First choice and nailed are two different things. They have squad depth, CL, and a manager who likes to rotate

I think Reece is favourite for the easy fixtures in pl which is great. While Azpi experience needed in CL. Azpi also can slot in RCB if Tuchel decides to play both

An ways Reece is totally worth it imo. Him and chilwell Basically hogging the opponents touchline and if you got both you are likely to get one chelsea wingback starter every gw

Azpi has played much more games at CB under Tuchel than RWB. So if James starts in the CL, there’s a risk. There’s also CHO who can play RWB.

depends what you want from him. Hypothetically it's looking possible whomever starts in the wingback role's for Chelsea will average 5.3-5.5ish PPG, so if James is left starting 2/3 (like last season) then he's not great value.

If he can start 3/4 then his average PPG obviously creeps up, but not to anything crazy good, still around 4.4.

It's just the sub appearances, no other way around it. If they stopped then he should be in everyone's team. But they never stopped last season, and they haven't stopped this season.

      1. Postman Ty

There's no context in this statement. He's a young player that's a year older and more experienced now, it's not like he's peaked and you're looking at years of data. He didn't start the first game of the season because England were in the EURO final, played a full game, got sent off, started again and got injured, had one appearance off the bench back from injury and is starting again now. If you follow Chelsea closely it's clear he's first choice.

        1. F4L

I understand what you're saying but first choice doesn't mean immune from rotation under Tuchel does it? Starting 3/4 would still be impressive, possibly only Rudiger will have a better starting percentage than James in Chelsea's defence.

And the fact that James has been subbed on 2/3 times this season in the league when he was benched, even when he was lacking match fitness and returning from injury. I don't know the reason but obviously Tuchel highly rates James' impact off the bench.

          1. Postman Ty

For sure they will always have to rotate with games every weekend and midweek. I would say 3/4 is even an understatement barring injuries. Rudiger is 9/10, Azpi is 7/8, James is 5/6 as explained by the EUROs, Chilwell is 4 in a row after a rough start. The real rotation will be Silva because of his age, Christensen because he's 4th choice CB (despite an insane record now), and Chalobah who's 5th choice. I don't expect Sarr to get more than 1 or 2 further league games barring injuries. He likes having Azpi in the team because he's captain and experienced, but much preferred at RCB. Odoi can play RWB but Tuchel has shown he doesn't particularly like him there and Odoi has made it very clear he prefers LW.

Just trying to share my observations as someone who follows them very closely.

Sure Reece comes with a caveat but if you can tolerate those 1 pointers you can taste the sweetness of the big hauls

Depends the kind of manager you are. Im all in for Chilwell James double up.

I for once prefer them over steady eddies (likes of Rudiger Dias etc) much more enjoyable

that's fair enough, full backs are definitely more fun to own! If you can catch James' purple patch then he's worth the punt/or if there is injuries.

but fwiw since Tuchel has taken over Rudiger has averaged around 5PPG, I haven't calculated it and James may have eclipsed that now, but his recent hauls are obviously not sustainable.

i expect Chelsea wingbacks to provide consistent attacking returns and top the rankings come end of season. maybe not a goal or assist every game like recently but 1 in every 2 or 3 is easily possible

Tuchel himself emphasized the importance of the role

‘It's a very important position, the system that we play,' notes Tuchel. 'Of course, a very important part of the position is to arrive in the box, and to create a goal threat from the position."

"This is what we want and what we demand. I’m happy that Chilly is scoring and reaching his full potential, and pushing limits constantly because it fits pretty perfectly his personal player profile."

"For Reece, we have to encourage him to trust himself to arrive in the box and be dangerous because he can be a real threat, physically and actually also technically in finishing some fantastic goals against Arsenal and Norwich."

For sure, the attacking output from the wing backs has gone up a notch this season no doubt.

The way I see it is Rudiger and Chilwell are locks, for me I’m still not 100% convinced on James, but I fully understand why others would want to take the risk. There definitely is a very real chance he has a serious breakout season this year and becomes FPL gold and as essential as TAA!

Yeah, Cancelo on the bench, starting to see cracks in that city defence. And now no Laporte. Stones might be a good gambit. He had a knack for scoring from set-pieces. Also, Iheanacho will be on my bench. He's no longer a guaranteed starter. I've learnt my lesson with benching reeece james.

For free and no other issues, yes, absolutely. One of the most underrated positions of the FPL team imo. A decent GK can collect decent points total for one's team over a stretch of games in contrast to a keeper who scores 1,2 every week.

Possibly given you have your wildcard to come. If you can shove Emi into defence or someone like Cornet for a short term punt then it could pay.

2FTs. Looking at Benrahma to Trossard for one which does give benching headache of Ings/Antonio. Cant change Toney before NOR, new either.

Chelsea to follow that one of course, But he looks lethal - that was such a good goal as was the one ruled out at v Liverpool. If you got a decent mid in return it could work.

Son still an okay option. Beating Nuno may be tougher than beating Mou but he's got the class to do it 🙂 The worry is that Kane is a deadbeat and that makes him less dangerous.

Would be shame to drop Son just before the fixtures for which I got him 😀

I can do something like Antonio, Ings, Raphinha to Broja, Ronaldo, Smith Rowe for -4pts. But as you said, its Chelsea after Watford, so a hit plus compromises like this for just one week wouldn't make sense. Wish Kane was looking decent.
