FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: James injury latest and budget Dennis delivers again

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Wednesday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

INJURIES AND BANS

It was a punishing night on the injury front; no coincidence, perhaps, with the games coming thick and fast and the risk of muscle problems increased as a consequence.

Aside from Kevin De Bruyne, whose absence was expected at Villa Park, three other Manchester City players didn’t even make the matchday squad. Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones and Kyle Walker all missed out with previously undeclared “niggles”, with Pep Guardiola unsure when speaking after the match whether that trio would be fit for Gameweek 15:

“Yesterday the doctor come and say this player cannot play and after another and this morning the doctor said Gundogan couldn’t play. Aymer [Laporte] was suspended but will be back. Kevin had just two training sessions but is coming back. It is important for us as many players as possible. They have to compete with these guys, they were exceptional.

“I don’t know [if they will face Watford]. Normally I’m not like this, they are not there, I would prefer it, absolutely.” – Pep Guardiola

Phil Foden was an unused substitute on his return from injury, while the newly fit-again Jack Grealish had a brief cameo off the bench on his own comeback.

Jorginho and Timo Werner were also fit enough for bench duty at Vicarage Road but Reece James didn’t make the trip. Thomas Tuchel may have been about to tell us that the right-back had a chance to face West Ham at the weekend but the Chelsea boss was annoyingly interrupted by the same reporter who posed him the initial question.

“I cannot say today, it was like yesterday, too much pain for him to travel for us and to play. Hopefully, we have a chance that he’s back on… [answer interrupted by another question on the nature of the injury]… he got a kick on the ankle” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James’s chances of featuring in Gameweek 15

Chelsea also lost Trevoh Chalobah to a hamstring injury in the second half of the win over Watford.

“The next game is coming on Saturday and I am most worried about the injury to Trevoh. We got a lot of hits today. The doctor was on the field 20 times to treat players. It is a big loss with Trevoh and we have already some injured key players so I am a bit worried because the next game is Saturday at 12.30.” – Thomas Tuchel

The Hornets themselves saw Adam Masina limp off with a muscle problem that looks set to keep him out for a while.

“I think it’s serious because he was already operating these muscles. think I will miss him for a long time.” – Claudio Ranieri on Adam Masina

There weren’t many teams to emerge from Wednesday night unscathed.

Aston Villa lost Leon Bailey to a muscle issue that will very likely keep him out for weeks but the prognosis sounds positive on Matt Targett‘s head injury, at least.

“We’ll have to analyse [Bailey’s injury] with an MRI scan in the coming days but it looks like he’s going to miss at least a few weeks I think Matty will pull through, he’s had a bang but coming off the pitch he tells me that he should be OK. But you can’t take risks when it’s that area of the head.” – Steven Gerrard

Jan Bednarek and Salomon Rondon also picked up problems for Southampton and Everton respectively.

“He felt his hamstring so we need to wait to see what the physios are saying.” – Rafael Benitez on Salomon Rondon

“Hopefully he is okay. I hope that he stepped out just in time so that the problem did not become an injury.” – Bednarek

Marcal was absent from Wolves’ goalless draw with Burnley after testing positive for Covid-19, while the worst-hit side of the night were Brighton: they lost Adam Lallana, Jeremy Sarmiento and Adam Webster to muscle strains that left them down to 10 men in the closing stages of their draw with West Ham United.

“At the moment it doesn’t look like [they’ll be fit for] the weekend.” – Graham Potter on his injured trio

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

DENNIS DELIVERS AGAIN

As Michail Antonio was delivering a fifth straight blank in West Ham’s draw with Brighton, Emmanuel Dennis was overtaking him in the FPL points chart.

The fixture and the 50% flag meant that he was benched by almost 90% of his owners in the top 10k but the Nigerian recovered to play 90 minutes at Vicarage Road, making it nine attacking returns in five appearances with a clean sheet-busting goal for the Hornets.

He now trails only Jamie Vardy for points among FPL forwards and from Gameweek 16-23, Watford move to the top of our Season Ticker.

It should be said that he is massively exceeding his expected goal involvement (xGI) this season (by 7.35!), while he has been named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, which could see him miss a handful of Gameweeks.

But with so few other forwards making a case for inclusion, the question does have to be asked as to why we wouldn’t simply recruit a bargain-bin Watford striker and splash the cash elsewhere, at least while the more expensive forward options are trying to play themselves into some sort of form.

TUCHEL ON ALONSO

It was a disappointing night all round for those going big at the back, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all losing their clean sheets.

Marcos Alonso ‘assisted the assister’ for both of the Blues’ goals and a frustrating evening for owners was compounded when he was booked.

There were some quotes of note on the wing-back emerging from Thomas Tuchel after the game, when the hapless Saul Niguez was brought up as a topic of conversation.

“He was on a yellow card so we had two options – take Marcos [Alonso] off who also had a yellow card and try Saul as a wing-back. I had this in my mind before the game, if something happened to Marcos. I thought maybe it was not the right match to try things with new positions so it was him to change the shape a little bit and have Thiago on the pitch with his organising.” – Thomas Tuchel on Saul Niguez

TIME TO SELL WOLVES PLAYERS

Wolves drew a blank for the second match running and the last two Gameweeks have been a bit of a damp squib for owners of Raul Jimenez and Hwang Hee-chan, who would have hoped for greater things against two of the division’s weakest defences.

Bruno Lage’s troops now face some daunting-looking fixtures all the way through to the New Year, so Gameweek 15 looks to be a good hopping-off point.

 1

‘UNDROPPABLE’ BERNARDO

Bernardo Silva made it five attacking returns in seven Gameweeks with a goal in Manchester City’s win over Aston Villa.

With fitness concerns dogging Pep Guardiola’s squad, Bernardo has started 13 league matches in a row and is now City’s leading-scoring FPL midfielder.

With Grealish and Foden back to fitness, and De Bruyne and Gundogan not far away, the Portuguese may be due a breather soon – although it was only two weeks ago that he was deemed ‘undroppable’ by his manager.

“You cannot compete a long season without players. The moments Rodri and Bernardo play lately is too much. In six years, I never complain because the players are not here.

“I had 12 players today. If you think I complain because players are not here, it’s not going to happen. They have to recover quickly and compete against these guys who were so strong today.” – Pep Guardiola

EVERTON AND LEICESTER DEFENCES STILL ONES TO TARGET

Mohamed Salah continued his superlative form in the Merseyside derby, while Diogo Jota made it four goals in three matches in Liverpool’s ultimately comfortable 4-1 win over Everton.

The Toffees may not show up as dark shades of blue on our Season Ticker but they are a defence to target at present: 15 goals have flown in over their last six matches, with a league-worst total of 22 big chances conceded an unwanted record.

The same could be said for Leicester, who are still without a clean sheet since Gameweek 1.

In eight of their last 10 matches, the Foxes have conceded two or more goals – including in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Southampton.

    Let's talk about Lamptey.
I have 2FT with no pressing issues. However, I have a dead wood in Stones in my backline and I think it's worth changing it.

Reguilon is an option but Spurs are still meh.
I have been quite impressed by Lamptey last displays. He's eletric. Brighton's finishing still need improvement and Lamptey will probably be rotated/rested which makes him qite a hard asset to manage but the upside is high.

The idea is not to play him every week but that he covers some rotation during the Xmas time.

Good option or too hard to manage?

Well he's still building up his fitness. My concern is that he will always be an injury waiting to happen. I'm sure his gametime will be carefully managed over Christmas. Best to monitor for now.

Probably depends on a few things, primarily the strength of the rest of your bench and how many assets you have that are likely to be rotated. City are more settled but there will still be rotation there, especially if they have most of their attacking players available very soon, if you have Jota he may be prone to rotation soon with Klopp saying Firmino may be back within the week, etc. Things can tie together pretty annoyingly at times and as you say Lamptey has to and will be managed so it could be the case that when you need him to cover other players that he doesn't appear.

People read too much into this "managed minutes"..go for the upside imo ...he was the 3rd sub when his side were 1-0 down and needed a goal over a recognised midfielder or a striker shows his importance to attacking play..he is playing RM creating a ton of chances, clean sheet points just a bonus..good/decent fixtures for Brighton

I think it's fair considering rotation and fitness but it's dangerous to base our decisions only on this.

Rotation is meant to happen next month and will bite when you don't expect it. So it's probably best to focus on the player's ceilings in our choices.

Jota, Lamptey, Alonso, all rotations indeed. But all great ceilings.

I'm certainly not saying anyone should only base a decision on this but it's something to consider. It's like people deciding between Cancelo and Dias last season. Yes, Cancelo has a far higher ceiling than Dias, but Dias was a safe pick, you could nearly guarantee he played every week if fit. Cancelo was in and out constantly, so if you're looking at a fixture and thinking "he'll be perfect for this and could haul huge", that could well be an occasion on which he cameos for a 1 pointer. Yes, Lamptey assisted last night, but he only played 20 mins. He doesn't get that assist for a wondergoal and suddenly you're sitting irritated at that 1pt and still none the wiser if he will start the next one.

    Timing of a transfer.

If budget wasn't a constraint, when is the best time to make a transfer at this time of the season?

With fast fixture turnarounds and dare I say covid back in the mix, I like to have every bit of info I can. Had to sit on my hands and watch Dennis and Jota rise last night and not buy them.

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Alonso (Livramento)
    Salah Cornet Foden (Trossard Allan)
    ASM Kane Toney

Was planning on bringing in Bernardo for Trossard this week, I certainly considered other options, but last night sealed it. But my issue is who to drop from this team this weekend in order to play him. Toney has Leeds (who have improved defensively but will give up chances with how direct Brentford play), ASMA has Burnley in what's surely a must-win game, Kane has Norwich, Cornet has Newcastle. Is it crazy to drop one of the Chelsea boys (likely Rudiger)? Was punished the last time I did it but I do expect West Ham will score.

      Roll a die?

I think West Ham is strong at defending set pieces (I haven't checked stats), so that does diminish Rüdiger's threat significantly enough to bench, imo. But I'm nowhere near certain

See how Spurs and Utd fare today then you can make your decision. Kane can has been very disappointing but it may change tonight. CR7 on the other hand we don't know how nailed on he will be under the new manager, but i expect him to still start majority of the games, it's only if they are good enough as a team to trust him.

Jimmy to Watkins is a decent one, or Dennis/King.

Looking at the fixtures until a possible GW28 WC, I now have this as the target with transfers:

    DDG
    TAA James Alonso Cancelo
    Salah Sancho Foden
    Antonio DCL Jesus

    Bachmann Gray Livra Brownhill

Jota revolving door with Gray and Salah, based on Firmino and AFCON - currently in my team.

Jesus Benteke Dennis now, Dennis to Antonio GW18, Benteke to DCL GW19. Son + McCarthy to Sancho + DDG in GW16. Bachmann/Foster in for Matthews with a spare FT later, especially before GW23

Things will change, plans will evolve again. Monitoring/scouting my targets for now

Having a plan moulds my transfer decisions

If nothing goes wrong, I move with the plan. If things change, I update the plan. If things change drastically, like DGWs out of the blue in GW16, I overhaul the plan

But there is a plan. I don't spend transfers blindly on the guy who just hauled

There's a team structure, targeted players, targeted fixture runs

That's how I choose to play this game. It may be different from how you play yours, but it's my choice and I don't expect everyone to follow it

If you don't (want to) understand this, then please just ignore my posts. This is not the kind of conversation I would like to have here

I think you're an informed and engaged player so it baffles me a bit how you don't just take your own advice. You could easily be a top player if you cut down on hits and played patiently.

But I guess we all play FPL for different reasons. The only thing I care about in the end is getting the most points I could possibly get to win my mini leagues.

I have some terrible luck with injuries or variance going against me in weird ways

            Every season

So, while trying to have a good team, I'm also almost always fixing another flag, or crawling back some points. You can track my GWs this season to see this, starting with Kane (C) vs Watford over Antonio (C) vs Palace, when Palace had good defensive numbers, Spurs were about to top the table, and Kane had committed to the team and done well in Europe. My season hasn't recovered

            It happened again in GW13

I won't moan about my luck on here, it's not the kind of conversation I'm here for... But it's a huge factor in what you see in my ranks every season. I don't bother about it anymore

Yes, lots of hits. But almost always fixing something

Honestly, I don't agree. Patience is your big killer. You just hit out any player that doesn't haul immediately/has any slight drop in performance.

Luck evens out. I captained Kane in GW9 the week Salah got the hat-trick and I'm still in good shape.

No. Those are not the hits I take

Please go through my GWs from GW1

You're describing someone else, not me. The evidence is in my linked team

Your team is linked. I can see it. You cannot possibly convince me that taking 3 -8 hits in a row is optimal play.

I'm gonna double down on King here. I've got him but still think he's the better option, similar starts but on pens, looks to be more nailed and doesn't have the AFCON when the fixtures are great for Watford

    Sanchez
    TAA James Cancelo Alonso
    Salah Jota Gallagher
    Kane Antonio Toney

    (Gunn Livra Brownhill Sissoko)
    1 FT & 1.7m

    A) Gallagher ➡️ B.Silva

    B) Save FT (Sell Kane next week and redistribute funds to get two out of Kaku, Sancho, Bowen or City attacker)

    Thoughts on this lot?

I think I like A. I'm considering doubling up on City mids - the run of games is amazing but I also plan to have a strong bench to cover rotation. So in your situation you could do something like get B Silva and then next week do Kane to say Josh King and Brownhill to Foden? Gives you cover for any rotation or suspension (Cancelo on 4yc for example)

I'm still not sold on City mids every week there is a new mid who looks a better option than the previous one.

Can totally understand that, that's why I like the option of picking 2 and sticking with them over the fixture run. Whilst having the bench cover. Could backfire but they still have very low ownership so worth the risk

What looks the best moves for this team? I've got 2FT and £0.3 ITB. Both moves below leave enough to do Kane to Ronaldo in GW16.

        A) Jimenez to King and White to James with the 2FT. Potential injury to the latter is obviously putting that in jeopardy. Would mean me shifting to a 4-3-3 and Mbeumo becoming 1st bench option for most games.
        B) Jimenez to Dennis, Raphinha to Bowen, Mbeumo to Foden (-4). I'm guessing Foden should be fit to start the next one given he was on the bench last night. Not sure I'm crazy about losing Raphinha before Brentford, or taking the hit, but it's a decent long-term move and probably an upgrade on three of the weaker areas in the team.

        Sanchez
        TAA - Cancelo - Alonso - Livramento
        Salah - Jota - Raphinha - Mbeumo
        Kane - Antonio

        Subs: Gunn; Jimenez, White, Allan

Toffee fans leaving after 25 mins last night is pathetic . I think if you feel the club is being run badly then absolutely vote with your feet and don't turn up to games and hand over your cash.. but i saw effort from everton last night, especially gray, they just came undone against 11 world class players (and one who is now clearly the best).
