Who’s leading the Premier League xG and xA tables?

As we have reached the winter break, here, we take a look at this season’s Premier League expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) per 90 minutes leaders.

To nobody’s surprise, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) rank highly, but the data does also reveal some more interesting names, which we’ll explore below.

Note: the following lists only contains players who have featured for a minimum of 450 Premier League minutes in the 2021/22 season.

All stats in this piece come from our Premium Members Area, where there is currently a free trial.

This article harnesses our ‘per 90’ filter, which you can learn more about here.

xG PER 90

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6
PlayerMinutesxG per 90
Dominic Calvert-Lewin5180.79
Mohamed Salah17830.70
Diogo Jota15410.65
Cristiano Ronaldo14560.60
Patson Daka4500.58

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), who has three Premier League goals to his name this season, is ahead of all other players for xG per 90. However, his 0.79 tally is boosted after being handed three penalties across his six appearances, which notably, he may no longer be on, having missed from the spot against Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 21.

Elsewhere, two Liverpool midfielders appear – Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota (£8.4m) – with 0.70 and 0.65 xG per 90 respectively, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo features below, having registered a whopping 63 shots since re-joining Manchester United, more than all players bar Salah.

Patson Daka’s (£7.1m) inclusion in fifth is particularly interesting, despite limited minutes which should, of course, be taken into account. Across his nine Premier League appearances in 2021/22, the 23-year-old has produced four goals and three assists, averaging 4.8 points per match.

Jamie Vardy’s (£10.3m) hamstring injury is expected to keep him out until March, although Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.9m) is back from Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) duty, suggesting we could see a bit of rotation up front, especially given Leicester City’s schedule, which includes Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League games in February.

xA PER 90

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Thursday review, injury news and the things we learned
PlayerMinutesxA per 90
Trent Alexander-Arnold17730.43
Michael Olise4810.36
Riyad Mahrez8390.30
Mason Mount14330.29
Ashley Westwood14200.23

Trent Alexander-Arnold is out in front with 0.43 xA per 90, which has translated into 10 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assists, a tally only Jarrod Bowen (£6.9m) can beat, with 12.

Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise (£5.4m) also features, having impressed despite playing for just 481 minutes. The youngster has produced two goals and three assists during that time, all from the bench, we should add, highlighting his potential when handed game-time.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) could come back onto the FPL radar after the winter break, having been handed a decent rest following his AFCON involvement, though Mason Mount (£7.6m) is seeing huge sales, with three blanks scheduled in the next four Gameweeks.

Ashley Westwood (£5.3m) is a surprise entry in fifth, especially given that Burnley have four games that still need to be rescheduled. However, his lack of goal threat – the midfielder has taken just four shots in the box all season – suggests there are better options available, despite his budget price tag.

Those thinking Greenwood will be dealt with correctly and will be done at MU might want to remember that this is the same club that signed a player last summer with a very high profile case that admitted he paid off the person that accused him of assaulting her, and that invited Ryan Giggs to their director's box for a match in September. Players like Marcos Alonso, Jerome Boateng and Kingsley Coman are still playing at top teams in the top divisions of world football. We've seen time and again that these people aren't treated the same and their "punishments" are pitiful to them, while the victims continue to suffer and are made out to be liars.

Also to the many people that think your jokes are hilarious right now, they're not. It wasn't funny with the likes of Mendy, and none of this and nothing to do with this is funny now.

This is the difficulty here, right now it's an accusation only and everyone is already making it out he's guilty. Whilst the chances are high, people just need to wait for the actual facts rather than pretending they're lawyers.

Spot on Nate. Perhaps Alonso's drink-driving doesnt quite deserve to be lumped in with these violent abusers but dont really want to quibble, otherwise I agree with you completely

Fair point, they are both different cases. Still I think it's worthwhile to point our the duplicity regarding a variety of instances where someone in his position does such a thing yet continues to live their life like normal, while the victim has no life to live at all any more.

Why expose someone you love, or loved, on Instragram to the world? The courts have to decide his guilt not Internet users.

Perhaps because of the pain they've caused you and saying anything to anyone regarding abuse is so difficult, and perhaps because, when the MET themselves ask a civil servant who is supposed to be making a full report on an event that broke the law to make minimal reference to the event, you may have little faith in the willingness of the police and courts to uphold everyone to the laws to the same extent.

You clearly don't understand the power dynamics behind this type of abuse this type of violence. Do you think this was a one off event? Ofc not, and if she had gone to the police some fancy expensive lawyer would have protected his identity from the press until he could quash it and make a financial deal.

She was probably have had enough of his violence and snapped. The fact the posts were deleted reveals she is frightened and even remorseful. Often victims do.

It's great his name is out there and hopefully the full force of the law comes down on him.

To everyone saying that footballers can get away with this kind of abuse because of who they are I think you need to be enlightened.
This problem exisist through society at every level. Men have been getting away with this for years. The only way it stops is for society to open its eyes to it.
If found guilty Greenwood rightly deserves all the associated punishment. But so does everyone man guilty of such offences.
Don't dismiss this problem as just involving an elite few.
Well done to the girl for speaking out, hopefully others will do the same. It is the only way to stop this.

My partner was a victim of abuse and mentally and emotionally it has never left her. I know.

My point here is more about people expecting something major to happen here and for things to change, but when people see football players or celebs doing this and continuing on their lives like normal while the victims have to live with the pain and fear forever (and generally receive further abuse online from strangers), it nearly normalises it for them and can nearly encourage those people to think it's acceptable.

I see it swinging the other way if it keeps being reported in the news. For years it was a hidden problem. Hopefully the change will come with these high profile cases.

I hope so. Movements like MeToo are so important but of course it won't always reach everyone and there are so many in situations where revealing the truth will only make their lives worse. It is definitely a societal issue though, education is so important going forward and from a young age. We just had a case here where a woman was stalked and murdered in daylight after work and something in public discussion since then was the prevalence of female-only and male-only schools in the country and the impact this has on boys / young men and how they view and treat women in daily life. Just a small aspect of an issue that has so many layers to it but if people are talking about it it's at least something. Like with this case it's important that it continues and it's not forgotten about it.

The team has played better without Auba. Not saying he isn't a better player, just Lacca fits the team better.
Same could be said for Ronaldo at United. Top players don't always make the team better unless they fit the system.

Everton agree the fee is around the £4m mark then it's just shy of £400k per game with wages.

I guess Everton was more desperate than Palace plus he doesn't probably need to move home.

The delay with Palace was always his wages per game (not the loan fee). Everton just said yes, as negotiations were going on a couple of weeks at the Palace end, and probably didn't want to pay those wages per game.

Shame, I agree Palace would have been a better option for VDB. FPL wise he gets more games 🙂

If on wildcard I'm not sure which results is better for me here

probably a Morocco win as it'll bar hard for people to get salah back right away without hits and whilst also targeting other wildcard targets like Digne, Watkins, kdb etc

Depends, are you chasing your ML leader down by wildcarding or are you doing it from a position of strength?

If strength - you want certainty, therefore you want Morocco to win.

If you're playing catch up, uncertainty and variance rules, therefore Egypt.

I wonder, and I might be really reaching right now if Ronaldo will feel somewhat vindicated at his jibes at his team mates (namely he's had an issue with Greenwood) and will smash it now.

      I'm sitting on B.

Kulusevski is a talented player, bit of an unusual winger but very capable and hard working, moving to Juventus wasn't the best for him as he's had limited gametime so he might take a bit of a while to get fully up to speed but I think anyone that can take a bit of pressure off of Kane and Son is good for Spurs. That being said I still think Spurs' main issue is a lack of creativity in midfield to properly make use of their better players up top. Bentancur should help with this although it depends really on how Conte wants to use him as he's played in a few different midfield roles

Yeah I suppose he's more of a grafter but I think he's a decent ball player, I think he'll at least maybe give Hojgbjerg a bit more freedom to move forward with the ball more like he often does for Denmark. I think Bentancur could do that too but I suppose he hasn't actually played that role too often

Any thoughts on this WC team?

    De Gea - Sanchez
Ait Nouri - TAA - Cancelo - Digne - Dalot
    Salah - Fernandes - Bernardo - Bowen - Ramsey
    Watkins - Broja - Maupay

0.6 ITB - Maupay will become Edouard after his DGW.

Current team has Lukaku, King, Dennis, Son, Livramento and Coufal who I want to move on hence the WC.

    Thanks in advance

the maupay and Edouard shuffle doesn't make sense to me because Edouard has his 2 next fixtures during the next 2 game weeks so feel you may miss the boat a bit there

I'd sooner have Foden than Bernardo I think

otherwise it's a solid team and similar my own wc

'Trent Alexander-Arnold is out in front with 0.43 xA per 90, which has translated into 10 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assists, a tally only Jarrod Bowen (£6.9m) can beat, with 12."

I think for of people, including me, this paragraph summaries the nonsense nature of xA and the wider of x "anything". Jarrod Bowen isn't in the table!

I guess one of the problems with xa is a lot of assists in fantasy are attempted shots that rebounded or you get brought down for a pen

Yeah, that's absolutely true, five of Bowen's 12 were Fantasy assists. Then it's Cancelo, Rudiger and Bernardo on three.

      Yeah no brainer.

I don't think we'll see him for the rest of the season.

If I was to guess (and with a big IF, which most people won't like to hear), United will probably reintegrate him next season given when enough time has passed and it isn't hot news.

You forget, United are owned by owners who think money first and are very detached to the club.

Have to say i am surprised he did not get a proper chance by Rangnick, i dont rate him high, but he got some quality you might expect to be useful in Rangnick style of play.
