FPL team guides: Arsenal – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

This is getting me feeling good.
People will complain about the defense but I think going against TAA and Cancelo ain’t that huge a deal.

    Meslier (Lis)
Van Dijk, Dias, Gabriel (Neco, 4.0)
    Son, Diaz, Grealish, Martinelli (Dasilva)
    Haaland, Darwin Nunez, Jesus

    Son/Haaland could become KDB/Kane.

Not sure why you don't have the leeds second choice as your 4mill keeper?

The team is different and not one for me personally, feel like 3 up top is too much the way FPL prices things. However, im no expert so good luck!

        Cheers Khark!
I like the look of Lis’ jersey on the app. So he’s in there for now.

I hate doubling up on keepers too.
Leeds have great fixtures and if they click I could want a cheap midfielder and Bamford within a few weeks.

Highly unlikely, but maybe more likely than a random Meslier injury?

        Maybe maybe.
I feel no TAA is scarier if the two. But I got a WC and feel like I’m using the money well elsewhere.
It’s all a risk at this point.

Looks good. Plenty of goals & assists there in the front 7 that negates the loss of assists from TAA & Cancelo & you covered there CS points.

Salah is a problem, but you the other 2 who are no mugs & will get a lot of chances too

Not seen Sterling in one RMT yet. How about thiis:

    TAA James Cancelo Dalot
    Sterling Salah Bailey Marti
    Jesus Haaland

      Chelsea are gaaaarbage.
I really like Sterling and can see getting him later in the season, but steering clear of that dumpster fire for now.

Him and Bailey can become 2 solid mids instead for me.

Wow. Surely there’s a chance but I can’t see it. Think closer to 6th in points than 3rd myself.

Defense is in shambles. Midfield is old or hardly know each other. Forwards don’t score goals (except Sterling).
        Formation isn’t sorted out.
That the senior players want out (Azpi/Alonso) is worrying for me.

          Midfield old???

          Kante 31
          Kovacic 28
          Jorginho 30

          Gallagher the latest addition

Forwards don't score goals but still Chelsea scored the 3rd most goals last season

    Ramsdale

    TAA - Cancelo - James - Dalot

    Son - Diaz - Maddison - Sancho

    Haaland - B. Johnson

    (4.0, Neco, Andreas, 4.5 fwd)

    Son

Fixtures? He could be top mid after GW 3
        Bre (h), Arsenal (a) sou (h)
And don't look at Arsenal away as a bad fixture Arsenal v Leicester are always high scoring games.
He also hits nearly all the freekicks and half the corners

Having triple City means that you'll struggle to bring Haaland in if he starts really well. You could possibly downgrade Ederson and fund Bailey to Martinelli, or swap him directly for Allison or Lloris.

Most have Kane as attacking Spurs coverage who gets goals and assists, is on pens and had a solid pre season is how I would explain it

Significant gap in PPG post Conte between Son and Kane

Ok sure but if I have Salah + Son I can’t afford Kane or Haaland

If I have Salah + Kane I can afford City midf coverage (Mahrez / Grealish / Foden) and can also switch to Haaland if needed

So for me it’s about balance and flexibility

        1. Ser Davos

Yeah, balance and flexibility is key, but also not succumbing to FOMO and being patient in certain players is key

Kane is fantastic shout for 11.5. However, even when he was bossing it at 10.5 20-21 he still didn't make the template due to cheap forwards and Salah - Bruno - Son 9m combo

Haaland will be managed, no doubt

Yeah Kane is easier to fit wih Salah/KDB. His finishing looks super sharp, and his underlying stats are similar to Son's. But for me, I'm not sure if I want to compromise on my main captain. Son has an extraordinary record under Conte, and with Bissouma the only addition in CM, I feel like Kane is likely to continue dropping deep in a sort of link up role feeding Son

The lack of reasoning regarding his fitness is perplexing. Clearly, he struggles with niggles, which is FPL kryptonite. Doesn't matter what beast you are, if you breakdown you're not a great asset at 11.5

Pep is bound to ease him in, anyway.

Kane is a safe option to start.

Pep will probably treat him with kid gloves. They haven't bought him for games like BOU at home, they've bought him to push them over the line in games such as at the Bernabeu

Kane looks v sharp and is an excellent option to start with

I could also be tempted to join the Kane - Haaland GW2 crew tbh (with Son & Kane for GW1). Although I really prefer to roll FT GW1 as long as I can field 11

Was thinking of that strategy but think u got it all wrong.
          Son to KDB GW2 surely.
Son away to Chelsea isn't great Salah at home to Palace surely another captaincy and then he has his favourites man u to play GW3 while Son plays Wolves ( a team he has yet to score against)

The plan all along was/is Son to KDB rather than Salah, but GW1 can sometimes tell us a lot and if Salah resembles post AFCON then there may be the option to do Salah to KDB and leave Son v the current shambles at Stamford Bridge

I've watched all Liverpools preseason Salahs touch and confidence is back. I have Salah Son and Mahrez. GW1 then Son to KDB GW2
Gw3 on need to look at getting in W ham and Arsenal assets as I take out Leicester players.
              6 week plan then WC

Would choose 3 from Dalot. Doherty. Neto. Rash each week

    Meslier
    Dalot. Doherty. Cancelo. James. Trent
    Salah. Diaz. Rashford
    Jesus. Haaaland

    4.0. Neto. Andreas. Archer

Liverpool fan here. Klopp gonna start Firmino first couple of game weeks to ease Nunez in to Liverpools style of playing, bit risky yet.
Go double Liv at back Cancelo to Robbo or Ederson to Allison. City have Ake starting v West ham

the 3 defenders are decent but just hard to look past Pope @ .5 cheaper when he's been a 160+ gk in 3 of 4 seasons and now playing with a better defence, even if Ederson is still decent value

    Salah Rashford Neto Andreas X
    Kane Jesus X

    A) Amazing threemium - Dunk Botman DaSilva Haaland (433)
