FPL team guides: Arsenal – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

Considering Cucurella scored just one and assisted one last season - his bonus points were incredible.

Indeed. Hopefully he goes, should be an incredible option and at 5.0 shouldn't be too concerned about the odd benching to give Walker a run-out

If Cucurella goes to City can this CancelNO team do the business?

    Alisson
    TAA, Cucurella, Dalot, 4.5
    Salah, Rashford, Neto
    Kane, Haaland, Jesus

    Cheers

I've also experimented, but thing is Cucurella won't be nearly as nailed. Walker + Cancelo will be a common CB partnership surely.

Might as well go for Dias if you want City Def (downgrade Allison) - or replace Allison with Ederson with another 5m DEF.

Cheers. Don't you think Cancelo will nail down the RB spot as he does for Portugal and Cucurella LB?

I'd much prefer Alisson & Cucu (if he goes) to 4.5 & Dias (or Chelsea WB). Think Alisson is a great option for 3rd Liverpool spot especially if/when Dias loses some minutes

I don't think not having Cucurella for the first 5-7 games is a big risk. He lacks attacking returns so far.

Definitely prefer going without than getting 1-3 starts in the first 5-7 games.

I think Walker is the same though. Not many attacking returns so he is low threat but high risk if he doesn't play / has a cameo.

Honestly think Cancelo or nobody from City defence.

Good, sensible. There's always a risk of paying too much attention to pre season form but given the amount of options I'd consider going without James. I'm also not too sure Zinchenko is going to be that good an option, good fixtures at least.

Not seeing as much Chelsea in teams now, Mendy, James chillwell etc?

    1. TheTinman
      • 8 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

I've never had one yet. But they have mixed fixtures and all of their best games are away from home, so not many nailed clean sheets. There's also question marks over the team itself, in a bit of a transitional period, happy to wait and see how it plays out.

You're never going to get priced out of James AND Chilwell, as its unlikely they both fly up in price since one is not obviously better than the other. So you do have that bit of protection there too.

They're still going to have a healthy backing and explosive potential.

I wouldn't say either are bad picks, think it just comes down to individuals feelings on whether Chelsea get off to a good start or not.

It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see then get 0 clean sheets or 5 clean sheets in those first 5 games...

it was clear something was rotten at Chelsea towards the end of last season, that's carried on into pre season where they look a bit of a shambles, i think Tuchel will probably get the sack soon especially with new owners probably wanting to have their own man in charge, Pochettino is available so i can honestly see him coming in and giving them a new lease of life

      1. Frosti
        • 11 Years

i think Tuchel is a better coach for sure, but Poch might be the better man manager, word is that Tuchel is a difficult man to deal with, the way he eviscerated his players after the performance last night is sure to turn some of them against him if they weren't against him already, just imo of course but to me they look like a team without any spirit and maybe Poch is the right type to come in and put his arm around some shoulders and get them playing like a team again

Looking at maximizing XI on a pts per game basis. Bear with me...

    Alisson - 4.9
    Trent - 6.5
    James - 5.4
    Tierney - 4.8
    Walker - 4.2
    Ait Nouri - 3.8
    Salah - 7.6 (C 15.2)
    Bowen - 5.7
    Mount - 5.3
    Kane - 5.2
    Jesus - 4.3

    Total - 65.3
    x38 weeks - 2481
    2021/22 - 2562 40k rank
79 pt gap, about 2 pts per GW

First, let me say, if Bowen had anyone but MCI or LIV GW1, he'd be in way more teams. Does he deserve the complete snuff. Dude was mad consistent last season, no club could easily contain him, and I think that .5m more than the 8m crop of options out there is justified.

Anyway, the idea behind approaching building a team like this is to go with the philosophy of safe. Its a relatively risk-free side. It covers the clubs I want coverage from, price points where there are attractive alternatives if need be, and with the fixtures such as they are, provided I don't get crushed by injuries, it allows me comfort in not having to rush for the early Benrhama-like bandwagons we get early every season. Because other than Jonny away to Spurs in GW3 (im using Andreas home to BRE instead), there really isnt a fixture from this XI in the first 5 GWs that scares me. You might be wondering "why burn a LIV spot with Alisson". Again, it's going with the PPG philosophy. No other position has a wider gap between the best (Alisson 4.9) and the next best (Ederson 4.2). I don't know about you but that's pretty significant to have that edge in a set-it-and-forget-it position, when other positions have more players in range of each other. So yeah, I COULD have Diaz...but there are several other players at his price who had a better PPG and have good opening fixtures AND could be argued are safer to start every game.

I think if I am to expect about a half point per game for Jesus given his new situation/form and I move the armband to a non-Salah option in well-timed fashion more often than not, I think I can close that 80 pt gap from last season and then some, not to mention the added points to an average score you get for extra fixtures that come from double gameweeks haven't been factored in. We know these players well, I dont think anyone is in danger of some kind of steep decline. Maybe Jonny needs to replace Ait Nouri or something, but no real major surgery needed. Zinchenko may be the pick over Tierney as well. But in general, I truly believe a side like this can all but guarantee that, while maybe not top 1k after 6-8 weeks, will float with relative ease around the 50-100k mark, which is perfectly fine as the season starts to take shape, a wildcard ready to go and team value hopefully building along the way.

Anyone bored/brave enough to total up their PPGs and get a average GW total for comparison? Im interested. In cases like Haaland, just go with Kane's avg. It may not be "accurate", but close enough for purposes here. If not, no biggie, cheers for reading and for any input you might have.

Going on points per game the mostly overlooked Vardy is the best striker at 6.65, next is Jesus 5.77 then Kane at 5.34 ( bear in mind Son is 7.72). Couple of yours is wrong too, Salah is higher at 8.65, James is 6.81, Robbo is higher than TAA, 6.60/6.56 and is cheaper ?

I pulled these PPG averages straight from the FPL transfer page. Double checked to be sure. Vardy is good value and I hope to figure out a way to flip Jesus for him after GW5.

Also love the ait-nouri pick, shoulda kept that gem locked away. His ppg is 4.28 great attacking fullback in a well oiled defence.

I like using the 'points per game' drop-down, that and the 'transfers in' drop down are pretty good indicators of what you should be doing during the season - but it's hard to evaluate this year based on last year, for example:

      - Chelsea might have a formation change, Mount and James used differently
      - second-half season Salah, also when Diaz came in, wasn't as good as Conte Son in terms of PPG
      - Walker isn't nailed
      - Jesus is playing in a completely different team
      - Leicester rarely had a full strength team last year, Maddison could put up numbers
      - United are probably going to be much better
      etc.

Yes, of course, I agree, nothing is going to be a carbon copy repeat, but I think the bulk of players I am looking at are in situations that are similar to last year, if not, likely better, like i think it is for Jesus. And I have to disagree about Walker not being nailed. With each passing day, he's guaranteed to be right back. Whoever gets brought in at LB isnt going to immediately flip Cancelo to RB and kick out Walker. I just dont see that happening. Eventually, if Cucurella comes in, once he looks ready to start, then I could make a switch for the same price. But I think based on this stage of preseason, Walker will be as nailed as anyone for City in the opening weeks.

I know this year isn't going to be the same but its like anything just better to be prepared and know the underlying stats to try and come up with the best solution. Like Mahrez and De Bruyne are both around 8ppg, yet Mahrez is 4mill cheaper. Robbo is better now than TAA because of Diaz cutting in but is cheaper.

Salahs numbers went down after the African nations wrecked him and then the contract saga, not because of Diaz joining

Is there any nailed defensive options for Spurs barring Dier?
Is Ederson a waste of funds with having Cancelo if so who do we think is a smart set and forget GK pick?
    Cheers guys

Yes I think he's better for bonus due to all the aggressive tackles & interceptions he makes, even though he will pick a few yellows.

    Could backfire but sod just going for the template 532 big at the back team for 5-8 weeks and then WC. Im going outside the box and going against every FPL you tuber with an aggressive strategy;

    Bench boost GW1, Wildcard GW2

Not about being “cool” I’m just saying you don’t have to play the same way as everyone else. It’s not like I’m wasting my triple captain chip on a punt like “Rashford vs BHA opening day”. The bench boost is always a crappy chip so at least if you play it opening week you get to spread out your funds to 15 instead of 11 and target certain games eg Forfana clean sheet vs Brentford. If it comes off you can have an epic start then simply WC GW2. I don’t think it’s much of a risk personally. You don’t have to be a genius to work out the likes of TAA cancelo etc are going to get 200+ points and are almost fixture proof. So I’d still have a similar team to others GW2 but with hopefully the advantage of a 30 point lead on most. Ok I miss out on WC in GW8 or whatever but I can still use my transfers wisely

Scary the kind of team you can put together with just one premium. If you perma captain Salah those first 5-6 weeks maybe you don’t need a Kane/Haaland?

Yep I think my favourite setup is Son/Haaland, but if I were to go with Salah I think I'd exclude other premiums & permacap him

      Shhhh!

Considering him for my team. He is as good a defender as Dias IMO, but he isn't as classy (he can't pass the ball as well). But when he plays, he makes Spurs' defence significantly better. I rate Lenglet as an upgrade on Davies too.
