FPL pre-season: Conte on Perisic and Doherty’s fitness

Roma beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on Saturday but Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) impressed in defeat, while Nottingham Forest handed Jesse Lingard (£6.0m) his first appearance in a 1-1 draw against Valencia.

We’ve got the goals, assists, line-ups and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from these matches in our Scout Notes.

Reports on the day’s other games are linked below, with more to follow.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0-1 ROMA

Match highlights

Spurs concluded their pre-season preparations with a narrow friendly defeat against Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Saturday.

However, Antonio Conte will take positives from the loss, with new signing Ivan Perisic impressing in his first start for the club.

The Croatian went close to scoring on three occasions and was a real threat in the final-third, although Conte did stress that he still needs further time to become “…the Ivan Perisic I know”.

“He’s an important player because he’s really good. He moves forward, good in one v ones, and then he can use both feet and he was before a winger which us why he’s good in one v one. But he has to continue to work because at this moment he’s not the Ivan Perisic I know. That is normal though, but I’m happy because he reduced the time to recover from his injury.” – Antonio Conte on Ivan Perisic

Fellow wing-back Matt Doherty (£5.0m) didn’t feature against Rangers last time out but started here and had a header tipped onto the woodwork before he was flagged for offside.

He also took up some encouraging attacking positions, but like Perisic, still needs to build up his fitness having only recently returned from a knee injury.

Doherty lasted 67 minutes before he was replaced by Emerson Royal (£5.0m), with new-signing Djed Spence (£4.5m) an unused substitute.

“It was the same (as Perisic) for Matthew (Doherty). I hope to see him like last season and now he’s working and he’s struggling. We need to have patience. We need to give time for these players to be really fit. In this moment we have two players, Perisic and Doherty, they have to continue to work and reach the peak of fitness because after a long injury they are struggling a lot. We need to have patience, but today it was positive to give them a lot of time to play again for Matthew and Ivan.

It will be very important for us (to get Perisic and Doherty fit), but then we have Sessegnon, that is a guarantee, also Emerson is good. There is the new player Spence. He is a guy who has to work a lot, because to go into Tottenham it’s different in the Premier League with Tottenham but in the end I’m happy.” – Antonio Conte on his options at wing-back

In a game of few clear-cut chances, a Roger Ibanez header proved the difference for Roma, but Harry Kane (£11.5m) was perhaps a little unfortunate not to return.

The England forward had the ball in the net just before the break only for the goal to be ruled out for offside, missed a late headed chance, while he also should have been awarded a penalty in the second half.

Elsewhere, Richarlison (£8.5m) also made an impact after replacing Son Heung-min (£12.0m), while Ben Davies (£5.0m) was back on the bench after injury.

“Richarlison I liked a lot the way he impacted the game. We need this type of player. Richarlison to start the game or go into the game, he can have a big impact. For us it’s very important. We need him behind Sonny, also Kane and Kulusevski. He is an important player because we have a lot of games to play.” – Antonio Conte on Richarlison

Tottenham Hotspur XI (3-4-2-1): Lloris (Forster 67); Romero, Dier, Sanchez (Lenglet 46); Doherty (Royal 67), Bissouma (Bentancur 46), Hojbjerg, Perisic (Sessegnon 75); Kulusevski (Moura 67), Son (Richarlison 67); Kane

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-1 VALENCIA

  • Goals: Johnson
  • Assists: Awoniyi

Match highlights

Nottingham Forest rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Valencia, with Jesse Lingard impressing on his debut.

The summer signing – deployed in a no. 10 role behind Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) and Sam Surridge (£5.0m) – showed glimpses of what he has to offer, taking on several shots whilst also being central to much of Forest’s attacking play.

“Thank you to the fans for a warm reception. I really, really appreciate it. I’m going to do my best for Nottingham Forest, don’t worry about that – 110% each game.” – Jesse Lingard

Brennan Johnson’s goal on 83 minutes ensured it finished even at 1-1, with substitute and record signing Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m) grabbing the assist.

And the pair almost combined again a few minutes later, only for Valencia’s ‘keeper to deny the Welsh forward getting a second.

Elsewhere, Neco Williams (£4.0m) looked lively in the final-third, while Jack Colback (£4.5m) started in central midfield alongside Lewis O’Brien (£5.0m).

That’s because Ryan Yates (£5.0m) has suffered another injury and is set to be out for a couple of weeks.

Nottingham Forest XI (3-4-1-2): Henderson; Worrall, Cook, McKenna; Williams, Colback, O’Brien, Toffolo; Lingard (Cafu 77); Johnson, Surridge (Awoniyi 62)

I’m sure peresic will get dragged off at times but I mean can you really see conte regularly taking off a full back after 55 minutes or so, lots of tight games in the pl and with an inferior bench option surely he plays 65-70 if fit

The issue isn't the tight games though, it's the comfortable games they are cruising through. Especially when they have CL in midweek.

But he is a great attacker and Spurs defence under Conte was pretty good last season, so he could still be worth the risk.

Interesting shout. I just don't fancy eithers fixtures over first 5 GWs before I'll likely early WC. Chelsea more from an attacking sense than defence.

Tempted to go Neto to Bailey and Trip to James then just roll the dice on Grealish.

I was in similiar postion regarding the £7m midfield position. I switched formation and went James over Grealish. It meant 5-3-2 but i could upgrade Mendy to Ederson

Interesting. I was quite set on 442 but I may do it.

Convinced myself I want to go Bailley over Neto now so I've went Foden over Jack but I'm not too confident. Thanks for the additional option.

I would say so, what else has he come to the club for? To sit on the bench for the last 1-2 good seasons of his career ?

Conte also said he needs fitness, he’s clearly fit enough to play so only way he now builds that is with Mins in the legs, I’d be stunned if he didn’t start against Southampton

When ucl starts it’s another matter but most of us will be wildcarding close to then

I honestly cannot believe how anyone who watched yesterday's game would somehow consider starting off with Halaand instead of Kane. He was absolutely abysmal and has a long way to go both in terms of fitness and familiarity with the English game before he can be taken seriously.

I miss the personal notes tab on FPL (it was beside the Watchlist). Sometimes ideas popped into your head when you were looking at your team and you could immediately store them in there for future reference. Nowadays, I can't be bothered getting up off my @rse to find a pen & paper to write those thoughts down and they're soon forgotten. Bring it back.

    Leeds 6-2 Cagliari summary:
    - Roca and Adams make a solid centre mid partnership. I would compare them to Drinkwater and Kante for Leicester 2015.
    - Leeds much improved on set pieces (both attack and defence). Scored from one (Koch) and came close on two or three other occasions.
    - Bamford looked pretty much back to his best. Lots of good movement and intelligent link up play.
    - Harrison was outstanding on the left-wing and repeatedly got passed his marker to get away the final ball.
    - Rodrigo had a freerole and was able to get in good goal scoring situations.
    - Aaronson looked very lively and creative. His through ball to assist Bamford's goal was pure class.
    Cons.
    - Lack of pace in the centre-backs made Leeds vulnerable to the direct through ball when playing a high line. Cagliari had 3 big chances from exploiting this weakness (scoring 2 of them). Quick forwards who play on the shoulder (Vardy, Haaland etc) would have a field day if Leeds continue with the high defensive line.
    - Leeds clearly don't have a specialist freekick taker. Every time there was 3 or 4 of them debating who would take it.
    - Left back still an issue. Although Struijk played well today, a decent right-winger would probably take advantage.

Overall, a very good display and I'm confident Leeds can beat Wolves by more than one goal.

      Great analysis for Leeds.

However Cagliari is a relegated side who lost their best players from the relegated team so disagree that a conclusion can be reached on how they will fare against Wolves or any PL side in terms of results based on Leeds' performance today.

      GW1 Kane
      GW2 Haaland

Assuming you’ll captain Mo GW1, it comes down to whether you think Kane will outscore Haaland by +4 points this week

He looked very lively down the left flank and even let fly and came close from 20 yds.

I'm worried about the minutes he played when Conte managed him at Milan. I can't remember the exact details but I think he usually subbed him off before an hour had been played. I may stand corrected but if that's correct it's not good news for clean sheet points.

Sorry, another RMT request. Anyone care to comment and I’ll return the favour!

Son to KDB in wk 2 and possible early wc if Kane & Haarland are going nuts but I think KDB out scores them both

    Ederson (4.0)
    Trent Robbo Cancelo Perisic Dalot
    Salah Son Rash Martinelli (Andreas)
    Jesus (Greenwood, Taylor)

You a United fan by any chance?

I’d ditch Rash and use the 1m to upgrade Dalot to Trips or Zincenko (and bank a precious 0.5)

        Nope. Dalot possibly becomes
Tomiyaso once fit and Rash seems like a punt worth taking….

Other option is Neto & Trippier + 0.5m

Set on this barring any news otherwise in pressers

    Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - Perisic
    Salah - Martinelli - Neto - Bailey
    Kane - Darwin - Jesus

    Ward - Andreas - Neco - Patterson

    Thoughts? 🙂

Can't see myself going anything other than 3-4-3 and those strikers look lively, in great preseason form with amazing fixtures

If captaining Salah for gw1 then is it pointless going Kane over Haaland if I'm planning on doing Kane to Haaland after gw1

If you are certain of the transfer it feels largely unnecessary - if like me you think there’s a chance you’ll just stick with Kane then fine

I think so, leaves you inflexible to react to any injuries, bandwagons or just bad decisions you made elsewhere

Feel pretty settled now with my team. Kane to Haaland GW2 booked in. Thoughts?

    Salah Martinelli Neto
    Kane Jesus

    Ward Bailey Andreas Archer

I do prefer Kane GW1 but I just think I'm almost certain to want Haaland GW2 and will probably captain. So, would rather get him now and have that FT to use to react to injuries/bandwagons or just correct any obvious bad decisions I've made

They definetly will. All good fantasy player priced the same. We could have 2/3 8.0 mids in our teams come a few weeks.

I reckon the 8m mids are a bit overrated. Best ones are Diaz and Saka IMO and most people can't get to them anyway cos of different LIV/ARS triple ups

I think Perisic will make a bit of a mockery of him, if his performance yesterday was anything to go by

I saw Kulu mainly staying wide right while Perisic got into the box and took up central, striker-esque positions

yeah, Perisic looked good yesterday v Roma ... even if Conte reckons he's not yet "the Perisic I know."

It’s solid, but it’s pretty much the standard template going around tbh. I’d maybe try and get 1 player in that steers away from the norm to try and gain a bit of an early advantage.
