FPL Gameweek 1 tips: Haaland v Kane, Perisic, £4.0m goalkeepers

With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar, who talks through his latest Gameweek 1 plans and addresses some of the biggest dilemmas that FPL managers are facing ahead of Friday’s deadline.

It’s less than 48 hours now till the Premier League kicks off and there are several questions in my head that I am guessing will be shared by several of you reading this piece.

I’ll give my own thoughts on these hot topics in the article below.

Perisic or not?

We all know what Antonio Conte’s wing-backs do, and a player with quality in the final third like Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) can really thrive in this system. He was very impressive in their last friendly against Roma, often taking up more advanced positions than either Son Heung-min (£12.0m) or Harry Kane (£11.5m). There is no doubt in my mind that he is going to become the third-most important player in that Spurs team but the question is will this happen in Gameweek 1 right away? Ryan Sessegnon (£4.5m) has had a full pre-season and knows the system well, so might get the nod early doors.

However, you will definitely want Perisic in your team come Gameweek 3 when he is up to full fitness and the fixtures are much more favourable for Spurs. Rather than booking in a transfer then, I would just start with Perisic and take the possibly bumpy first couple of weeks on the chin. There is still every chance he could start against Southampton and he has a very high ceiling if he does.

The third Liverpool pick

I was pretty set on Luis Diaz (£8.0m) being my third Liverpool pick till I saw the Community Shield. Granted, it is a very small sample size and it is dangerous to base anything on how a team sets up against Manchester City as they are a very unique team. But I just couldn’t ignore the positions that Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) was getting into, something we are used to seeing from Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) at Chelsea. Diaz also got into very attacking positions but I still worry that his end product might not be at the level we saw from Sadio Mane in previous seasons.

Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) also tempts me but I have gone a bit cold after reading some of the comments from Jurgen Klopp, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Nunez himself. Diogo Jota (£9.0m) is expected to be fit around Gameweeks 3-4 and with midweek commitments starting for Liverpool around then, it feels like a risk too far when Robertson is such a sure thing.

Trust in Reece James?

After Chelsea’s poor pre-season and loss of key personnel, I was fairly downbeat on Reece James’ (£6.0m) prospects for the first few Gameweeks. There was even a high chance of him playing as the third centre-back due to lack of personnel.

The potential signing of Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) is helpful for James as the Spaniard can slot in at left centre-back, which would allow Kalidou Koulibaly (£5.5m) to play as the right-sided centre-half and free up James for the wing-back role where we know he is gold. Everton also have Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) injured for Gameweek 1, which encourages me about Chelsea’s clean sheet appeal. I am definitely more keen on including James in my side than I was two weeks ago, after the Arsenal pre-season game.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

Use the £8.0m spot for fixture jumping?

I am trying to include an £8.0m midfielder slot in my team that isn’t committed to a Liverpool player. Their fixtures are too good to get rid of any of their assets for the first five Gameweeks but there is an opportunity to use that spot to target fixtures: say, start with Dejan Kulusevski (£8.0m) against Southampton, then switch to Phil Foden (£8.0m) against Bournemouth and after to Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) for Gameweeks 3 and 4 against Bournemouth and Fulham again.

I might have to sacrifice one of James or Perisic to achieve this, which is probably the biggest debate I have in my head still.

READ MORE: Which £8.0m midfielder has the best numbers?

Haaland or Kane in Gameweek 1?

This is a big decision going into Gameweek 1 and if Harry Kane was going to be my captain in Gameweek 1 I would have absolutely no hesitation in going for him – but I am going to be handing the armband to Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) at Fulham. Bournemouth’s current injury/recruitment woes have been well publicised and I am not prepared to go into Gameweek 2 without the big Norwegian as my captain.

As a general rule, I like to bank a transfer in Gameweek 2 so I can get a larger sample size of information and then take a points hit in Gameweek 3 if necessary with a better idea of the landscape. Booking in a transfer seems risky to me, especially when Haaland could easily outscore Kane in Gameweek 1. Also if I do opt for the £8.0m slot hopping strategy, I can’t afford to book that transfer.

Double up with £4.0m Leicester GKs

The availability of two £4.0m goalkeepers at Leicester has made things very interesting for managers looking to squeeze every ounce of value from that position. If Leicester had decent fixtures to start with, its something I could get on board with but with that fixture run in the first five Gameweeks and the transfer window still open, I am not inclined to go there.

I would rather use Danny Ward (£4.0m) in a rotation with one of Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) or David Raya (£4.5m) and in my opinion, the Daniel Iversen (£4.0m)/Ward double-up is more suited to the first Wildcard after the transfer window has shut and Leicester have a much better run of fixtures (around Gameweek 9 onwards).

My current FPL Gameweek 1 team draft

Whatever happens on the opening weekend, don’t beat yourself about it. Gameweek 1 is the biggest information reveal of the season, and going into the first Gameweek, we are all basically Jon Snow. We know nothing!

Enjoy the football and see you next week.

Nearly every time someone posts a RMT, someone comments that it's template. But in reality, there is a pool of about 25 players that feature heavily, so every time a team is posted, it looks template, but there are many combinations from that group. There are only 6 players at over 30% ownership.

There’s the FFS Scout template and the template players are large.
For instance, Martinelli is in nearly every squad on here but overall has less than 20% ownership

Only 2 of 4 teams posted on this page so far have Martinelli

Probably more to do with the structure, e.g two teams may have the exact same structure but one has Mahrez and the other has Mount

I’ve noticed that all the teams seem to have 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders and 3 strikers. Surely someone has the courage to go against the template?!

These 4.0 GK are a gift, now about the points thats a different story, hopefully Lei can keep some CS at the start. Think I am trying something like this:

    Ward Iversen
    TAA Dier Walker White Jansson
    Salah L.Diaz Kulu Mount Andersen
    Haaland Jesus Green

Any changes here? Can maybe reshuffle that defence if needed and also Mount or Kulu can become Saka or one of the city guys, it depends what combo would you say is better?

Repost- There are a lot of people going for Bailey 5.0. What is your plan after GW3? If you don't have money ITB then you won't be able to jump on a trending pick. At 5.5 a lot more options are available. Is it worth going Bailey?

I don't have Bailey & its mainly for that reason, plus the very short timeframe before Villa's fixtures turn. I've heard some say 4 weeks which is baffling to me - I'd only play him the first 2 GW. Basically I'm not convinced he's worth booking in a transfer & having to keep money in the bank. But I can certainly understand why people have him, a cheap shot at Bournemouth & Everton is appealing

My initial intention is that Bailey will eventually become more first sub because I think I can navigate without needing to save the 0.5

I’m anticipating in the coming weeks downgrading one of my defenders to free up budget. Re comment above about first 4 fixtures. I’d argue that villa’s first four are superior to wolves first 4 so if you would be happy playing Neto in first 4 surely you are happy playing Bailey and saving 0.5m.

Yeah that's the only way ig for bailey owners. Downgrade defence and then get on a trending mid option. I personally am not a fan of Neto. At 5.5 Aaronson is my top pick right now. At 5 Almiron is the only guy you could swap bailey for, but he is too risky.

Robertson vs Diaz a bit of a head**** but currently on this - Neto (+ possibly Andreas needed) for cover as I expect at least one of Doh / Per to be rotated, particularly against difficult opposition. Thoughts appreciated!

    Ramsdale

    TAA - Cancelo - Walker - Perisic - Doherty

Salah - Luis Diaz - Martinelli

    Haaland - Jesus

Subs: Ward - Neto - Archer - Andreas

Yeah I think so. I was considering upgrading Sanchez to Ramsdale, but with Ward to cover mun/whu, I think they might keep a similar number of CS in first 8 GW. I know Ramsdale can be better for saves & bonus but I'm finding it hard to imagine a situation where the bonus doesnt all go to Arsenal attackers with these fixtures (except maybe Gabriel if he scores from a corner or something)

For a 3 x Premium + Jesus team pretty good. I don't like the double Leicester GK however, I'd try find 0.5 and get Sanchez for Iversen and rotate with Ward.

I'm not sure Ward will be the starter GW 1, Iversen's had all the minutes in preseason along with Schmeichel with Ward yet to make a squad never mind an appearance, I'd either take both or just avoid completely.

Interesting team. I think more points can be found by spreading the funds, but it's not a definite so go for this if you like it. Saliba could be a nice asset, but that's also not definite, but at least Neco can be your back up so you don't have to rush a transfer through if Saliba gets a benching

Here be where I'm at. Trippier & Jonny's poor fixtures are covered by Neco & Patterson.

    Ward
    TAA Trippier Jonny
    Son(c) Diaz Saka Martinelli
    Haaland Darwin Jesus

    Iverson | Neco, Andreas, Patterson

Aside from cover/overkill arguments, what are you main concerns or changes and why pls

Don’t do this. Darwin will not cover Salah. And you’ll get left behind with a shoddy backline

        He's not there to cover. He's 4.0m cheaper 😀

It's different, I like it. Darwin is a bit of a risky use of a Liverpool slot though (albeit with a very high upside). Are you not tempted to downgrade and get Robertson + another def and switch formation?

Tempted, yes. I'm looking for goals galore at the beginning of the season, so a bit of a bias towards goalscorers and. Away from defenders. But I like Robbo and of course he threatens in the goal involvement. Not settled yet. Cheers

That's my forward line! And my captain! And 2/3 of my back 3! We've actually landed on quite similar teams 🙂

            Interesting. Why Mount over Saka/Diaz?

Was super impressed with Mount v Udinese. I've been back & forth on Diaz - think he'll be a great option when Firmino starts & he takes up more central positions, but I think Darwin is going to hog the big chances once he, hopefully, starts GW2. Saka was always, but only slightly, behind Mount/Diaz/Maddison in my pecking order

Thanks for your insight! You're expecting Darwin to be benched GW1 but not GW2?

I've not been convinced of Saka's value, especially with a potential incoming in attack, but that's not happened yet, and he took the pen in the last friendly, which has persuaded me to go for him over Odegaard. Not been so interested in other 8.0s so far, besides maybe Mount.

Just guessing re: Darwin. Mostly I feel like Klopp's comments are designed to ease the pressure & I think he'll start soon. But maybe one more cameo & then a first start at Anfield

    A) Sanchez + Ward (rotating) + Martinelli
    Or
    B) Ramsdale + Ward (Ramsdale perma start) + Neto

RMT favours A, just. I already have Saka and Jesus however so would be an Arsenal attack triple up.

    Really want all 3 however!

I think Gunners triple up is unnecessary

I'm 100% tripling up, just between Ramsdale or Martinelli for the 3rd pick

Good ol last minute RMT please.

Just bailed from Mahrez to Foden.

    Ramsdale

TAA - Robbo - Cancelo- Trippier

    Salah - Martinelli - Bailey - Foden

    Haaland - Jesus

    (same bench as everyone else)

    thoughts on my team?

    Alisson (Ward)

TAA - Walker - Cancelo - Dalot (neco)

Salah - Coutinho - Martinelli - Maddison (Pereira)

    Jesus - Kane (Greenwood)

Dalot I don’t like. Maddi is a great differential but I’d worry about the transfer speculation unfortunately

Love A. Different and loads of points there

B js template and playing it safe.

Depends on your risk appetite. A has a higher ceiling but deeper floor (when you consider EO)
